      Metro Railway, Kolkata has been carrying out various maintenance activities during lockdown period arising due to COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, various safety measures like sanitization, disinfection activities are being carried out in the Carshed. Dry and wet cleaning o­n both outside and inside of  rolling stocks are also being carried out for proper disinfection and sanitization maintaining social distancing  and other specified safety norms.
     The communication system and display boards in each of the six coaches of every rake are being checked and kept in working condition.  Cleaning of the escalators and lifts at all Metro stations is also being carried out at 15 days interval and functional testing is being checked at 3 days interval. 
     Visual inspection of the third rail of the entire section is also being carried out and the battery sets at all the stations are kept in working condition.
     Rolling out of rakes is being done inside the carshed premises o­n alternate days and speed trials o­n test track are being conducted fortnightly to ensure healthiness of traction system as well as to detect and rectify any abnormalities in any of the equipment.
     Apart from this, training of new entrants are also being carried out o­nline by nominated supervisors. All the training formalities regarding basics of electronics, rake  maintenance, concept about 3-phase drives etc are being conducted.

Pending for several years, they confronted Indian Railways as bottlenecks in different zones across the country.Around 500 modern heavy duty Track Maintenance Machines along with track, signal & Overhead Equipment (OHE) maintainers have worked regularly for 10749 machine days to complete overdue track maintenance of 12270 km plain track & 5263 nos. of Turn outs
Ultrasonic flaw detection (USFD) of 30182 kms of track and 1,34,443 rail welds has been carried out with USFD machine.Indian Railways planned these works during lockdown period considering it ‘Once in a lifetime opportunity’ to wipe out these maintenance arrears and take up the execution of work without affecting the train service

Backend warriors of Indian Railways have successfully executed long pending Maintenance works like Yard remodelling, Renewal of Scissors Crossover, Repairs of Bridges during this lockdown. Pending for several years, they often confronted Indian Railways as bottlenecks.
Apart from ensuring supply chains all essential commodities running through parcel trains and freight trains, Indian Railways executed these long pending maintenance works during this lockdown period when passenger services were suspended due to COVID -19.
Indian Railways focused o­n several long pending overdue maintenance works requiring Traffic block of long durations. These works were pending for several years and were confronting Railways with severe bottlenecks. Indian Railways planned these works during lockdown period considering it ‘Once in a lifetime opportunity’ to wipe out these maintenance arrears and take up the execution of work without affecting the train service.
The maintenance of assets was taken up regularly to continue the supply chain of essential goods to public.
Around 500 modern heavy duty Track Maintenance Machines along with track, signal & Overhead Equipment (OHE) maintainers have worked regularly for 10749 machine days to complete overdue track maintenance of 12270 km plain track & 5263 nos. of Turn outs.
Health of the track has been monitored through periodic runs of Oscillation Monitoring System (OMS) cumulating 1,92,488 kms. of track at 5362 peak locations indicated by OMS test has been attended to ensure proper quality. Ultrasonic flaw detection (USFD) of 30182 kms of track and 1,34,443 rail welds has been carried out with USFD machine. Critical summer precaution activities like de-stressing of long welded rail (LWR)which involved huge men power has been taken up with a new procedure for carrying out the work with ensuring social distancing norms. 2,246 kms of de-stressing of LWR has been done.
SOME OF THE IMPORTANT TRACK WORKS:
Renewal of wooden layout Scissors crossover with standard Pre-stress Concrete (PSC) layout in KAZIPET yard (South Central Railway).
A major block of 72 hrs was taken in Kazipet yard for pending yard remodelling to replace old wooden scissors crossover laid in1970 with standard PSC layout. It will improve the safety and speed of train movement through the yard.
Renewal of Scissors Crossover at Vijayawada Yard with PSC Layout (South Central Railway).
Two blocks of 24 hours were taken o­n 09.04.20 and 10.04.20 during the lockdown period for renewal of old wooden layout Scissors crossover with standard PSC layout crossover providing a vital link and flexibility in the operations of the yard. This will improve movement of train service towards Secundrabad and Vishakhapatnam.
Repair of Cement Concrete (CC) apron o­n Line no 1 and 2 at Baroda station (Western Railway).
The repair of CC aprons of Line no. 1 was undertaken in a traffic block of 4 days (8/4/2020- 11/4/2020) and of Line no 2 in a traffic block of 12 days (13/4/2020- 24/4/2020) using Ultra high strength, free flowing non shrink cement grout. The grout has arrested the pumping action of track o­n line no. 1 & 2 at the affected locations.
Remodeling work in Bangalore City yard (South Western Railway):
Work of Bangalore City Yard remodeling for simultaneous receipt and dispatch of trains at Mysore end was completed successfully. This work was pending for more than last 10 years and would have involved cancellation/short termination of 60 Mail/Express Trains under normal circumstances.
IMPORTANT BRIDGE WORKS:-
Re-girdering of Bridge No. 86 o­n Tunga River near Shivamogga Town (South Western Railway).
This is an important bridge having15 spans of 18.30m steel plate girders at Km. 61/100-500 o­n Birur Jn - Telguppa section of Mysore division. This work in normal times would have required traffic block of about 45 hours at 3:00 hours each day.
The existing steel girders are non-standard and being replaced with 25T loading standard steel girders. The height of the bridge is about 20m from river bed. The launching of all girders will be completed by 02.05.2020.
Dismantling of Road Over Bridge (ROB) near Chennai Station (Southern Railway) :
Dismantling of unsafe ROB crossing 8 tracks o­n the approach of Chennai Central Station has been started o­n 26.03.20 and will be completed by 03.05.20. If done in normal time, it would have required 48 hours traffic blockon line 1 to 6 and72 hours traffic block o­n line 7 & 8 (suburban lines)with at least double the resources and cost apart from massive cancellation/rescheduling of trains with resultant loss of passenger revenue.
Insertion of twin box segments of size 4.65x5.15m for subway in lieu of manned level crossing no. 493 (East Coast Railway):
A subway work was done between Visakhapatnam-Gopalapatnam section o­n 21.04.2020 in a traffic block of 9 hrs.This will facilitate closure of level crossing thereby improving safety of public. This work was pending from long time for want of traffic block.
Construction of bridge in Rajahmundry-Vishakhapatnam section to cater opening of 4 x 5.5 m (South Central Railway).
The work involves provision of new bridge in HUDUD affected area where the track was washed out 2 times in 2013 & 2014. Total 21 hours traffic block was availed at 7:00 hrs each o­n 25.04.2020, 27.04.2020 and 28.04.2020. This bridge was required for passage of flood water to avoid breaches.
v. Insertion of Box at Bridge No. 525 (South Central Railway):
16 Boxes of size (4.6x4 m) were inserted at Bridge no. 525 o­n UP line at km 266/7-5 between Tanguturu–Singarayakonda o­n 29.04.2020 in critical situation successfully within traffic block of 8 hrs.
Launching of 6 Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) under Bhusawal division (Central Railway)
Work of launching of 5 FOBs during the lockdown has been completed o­ne each at Bhusawal, Bodwad, Akola, New Amravati and Chandur Bazar Railway stations. 6th and the last o­ne at Nandurastation has also been targeted o­n 2.5.2020.
Dismantling of old abandoned twin FOBs at Ludhiana railway station (Northern Railway).
100-year-old twin FOBs were closed to passenger use since 2014. However, dismantling of old FOB in OHE territory blocking all lines for more than 10-12 hours for several days was not feasible o­n New Delhi- Amritsar route. During lockdown, dismantling of these FOBs has been planned to complete in traffic blocks of 8-10 hrs. for 8 days. 2 traffic blocks have already been availed for successful dismantling of FOBs.
Launching of Service girder for Canal work (East Central Railway):
Long pending work of launching of service girder in connection with Canal work of State Govt., requiring 10+ hours block was completed in Kakarghatti-Tarsarai busy single line section of Samastipur division.
Dismantling of Talla ROB (Eastern Railway):
The ROB was unsafe for passenger, therefore, same was closed for re-construction. 8 spans of the ROB over Kolkata terminal station crossing 11 tracks and stabling lines were dismantled. In normal situation it would have a huge impact o­n passenger (especially suburban services) and freight services due to traffic blocks.

The Traction Distribution (TRD) wing of Electrical Department of Central Railway is mainly responsible for overhead electrical power supply to Railways is also playing a crucial role in smooth operations of trans. To ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods like food grains, medicines, vegetables by plying goods and parcel trains, the TRD wing working tirelessly towards maintenance of Over Head Equipment’s (OHEs) and Power Supply Installations (PSIs).
The TRD wing of Central Railway also ensuring the maintenance of Crossovers, Turnouts, Masts, Cantilevers etc for smooth operations of trains by operating power blocks o­n all five Divisions of Central Railway i.e. Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Solapur and Bhusaval. The Live Line Checking by Tower Wagon and Foot Patrolling of sections is being carried out to ensure healthiness of OHE gears for smooth running of trains.
It is also ensured the Social Distancing during work and supply of face masks, sanitizers, soap, gloves, disinfectants etc. to all the staff as precautionary measures in view of spread of COVID19 virus.
In these difficult times, maintenance carried out by TRD officials is commendable. Central Railway has dedicated it’s all work forces to fight against the COVID19 pandemic be it may be running of goods and parcel trains for uninterrupted supply of essential goods or taking care of people stranded by supplying food during the nationwide lockdown

For track maintenance work at Howrah Passenger Yard, 480 minutes Traffic & Power block from 00:15 hrs. to 08:15 hrs. o­n the night of 30.11/01.12.2019 (Saturday/Sunday) will be required.
Consequently, the following train running arrangement will be made:-
CANCELLATION
·38408 Panskura-Howrah local from Panskura will remain cancelled o­n 01.12.2019.
·38405 Howrah-Panskura local will remain cancelled from Howrah o­n 01.12.2019.
RESCHEDULING OF TRAINS
·12871 Ispat Express will leave Howrah at 09:10 hrs. instead of its scheduled departure at 06:55 hrs. o­n 01.12.2019.
·12703 Falakunama Express will leave Howrah at 09:20 hrs. instead of its scheduled departure at 07:25 hrs. o­n 01.12.2019.
SHORT TEMINATION/SHORT ORIGINATION
·12857 Tamralipta Express will originate from Santragachi instead of Howrah o­n 01.12.2019.

Consequently, 53485 Up & 53488 Down Tinpahar-Rajmahal-Tinpahar Passenger train will remain cancelled o­n 12 & 13 October 2019.
Inconvenience likely to be caused is sincerely regretted.

Shri.R.Sarangam, Track Maintainer (Gang No.8), while performing duty o­n 14th October, 2018 between Ottivakkam and Chengalpattu in Villupuram – Chengalpattu section of Chennai Division noticed a rail fracture at 9.50 hrs.    At the same time,  train No.16106 Tiruchendur – Chennai Egmore Chendur Express was fast approaching the spot.  Shri.R.Sarangam reacted quickly and rushed towards the speeding train waving the Hand Danger Signal flag as per procedure.  His presence of mind and   momentous decision to wave the danger signal flag averted a probable mishap as the train was stopped just before it approached the rail fracture spot.  The duty conscious staff also informed the section engineers who restored the track in a time bound manner. Normal train services resumed in the section  at 10.40 hrs.  
Shri.R.K.Kulshrestha, General Manager, Southern Railway appreciated the presence of mind and alertness of the track maintainer .  The General Manager  lost no time in felicitating Shri.R.Sarangam for his exceptional service in ensuring safety precautions o­n time.  Shri. R.Sarangam received an award of Rs.2000 and merit certificate from the General Manager.

A four hours mega block will be taken o­n UP line between Vadodara and Bharuch from 13.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs on 16.07.2017 (Sunday) in connection with maintenance works. The following trains will be detained.
1)Train No. 59049 Valsad - Viramgam Passenger will be short terminated at Surat and will remain cancelled between Surat and Ahmedabad.
2)Train No.59050 Viramgam - Valsad Passenger will be short terminated at Ahmedabad and will remain cancelled between Ahmedabad and Surat.
3)Train No. 19260 Bhavnagar-Kochuveli Express will be regulated for 2.05 hrs in Vadodara Division.

Japan to train IR Rail personnel on operating the first Bullet Train

New Delhi: With Indian Railways venturing into the age of high-speed rail, the government has tied up with Japan to train the manpower required to drive the new age transport system.

Japanese experts will train railway personnel for operating the first bullet train in India. According to railways, there will be a requirement of nearly 10,000 skilled personnel to operate the bullet train as well as the other high speed corridors being developed in the country.

A senior railway ministry official said a training centre will be set up in India where the best of the Indian Railway staff will be trained to operate and maintain the high speed trains.

TRAINING CENTRE TO BE SET UP IN INDIA

Of these, nearly 4,000 staff will be required for the 508 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad bullet train corridor. “Indian train drivers will be trained in high-speed train driving simulator to practice how to control trains in extreme weather conditions and at speeds varying from 50 km per hour to 300 km per hour,” a railway ministry official said.

Apart from the bullet train, the Indian government is taking up work on five long distance high speed corridors and eight other semi-high speed corridors. The first semi-high speed Gatimaan Express between Delhi and Agra The game has not been launched in India yet has already started. The train runs at the speed of 160 km per hour.

ENGINEERS, TECHNICIANS TO BE TRAINED

A railway board official said that to meet the requirement, a pool of highly trained loco pilots and technicians will be created. Unlike the normal express trains, the high speed trains will be driven by two main pilots instead of one assistant pilot.

“Only the senior-most loco pilots, with over 20 years of experience, will be trained initially. Mental ability, quick decision making and medical fitness are critical for drivers on high speed trains.

Once they qualify the physical test, they will be put to training on simulators,” officials said adding the place where the training centre will be set up is yet to be decided. Similarly, the engineers and technicians of Indian Railways will also be trained to repair and maintain these trains as the high speed technology is entirely new to the country.

WR’s JUMBO BLOCK BETWEEN ANDHERI AND BORIVALI  STATIONS on 25/10/15

To carry out maintenance work of tracks, signaling & overhead equipments, a jumbo block will be taken between Andheri and Borivali  stations o­n 5th Line i.e non suburban line from 10.35 hrs to 15.35 hrs on Sunday i.e 25th October, 2015 .

During the block period, up and dn Mail /Express trains will be worked on lines between Borivali and Andheri.

Due to the block, some up & down local trains will remain cancelled, the list of which will be available at all stations with Station Masters. Passengers are requested to take note of the above arrangements.

JUMBO BLOCK on UP & DOWN SLOW LINES BETWEEN BORIVALI AND GOREGAON STATIONS

To carry out maintenance work of tracks, signaling & overhead equipments, a major block will be undertaken between Borivali and Goregaon stations from 10.35 hrs to 15.35 hrs o­n Sunday i.e 6th September, 2015 on UP & DOWN Slow lines.

During the block period, all UP & DOWN Slow line trains will run o­n through (i.e. fast) lines between Borivali and Goregaon stations which might get delayed by 10 to 15 minutes. During the block period trains will be dealt on any of the PF No.3/4/5/6/6A at Borivali.  

During the block period from 10.35 to 15.35 hrs all fast services of Borivali (BVI) – Bhayander (BYR) – Vasai Road (BSR) & Virar (VR) will stop at all stations between Andheri (ADH) & Borivali (BVI) i.e. at Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad & Kandivali in both the directions including Dahanu Road locals (DRD 93011 & DRD 93010).

Detailed information to this effect is available with concerned Station Masters.

Passengers are requested to take note of the above arrangements.
