Chennai Metro to appoint Design Consultant for Central Square

Chennai Metro to appoint Design Consultant for Central Square

This Metro station will be linked to MRTS and Suburban Railway lines. Chennai Central station getting a facelift

Chennai: The Chennai Metro Rail will soon appoint a design consultant specially for developing the largest underground station in Chennai, the Central Square.

The Chennai Central Metro Rail station, which has now been named Central Square, sprawls over 70,000 sq. m and goes as deep as 25 metres.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL), this station, built at a cost of Rs.400 crore, will have an exclusive consultant for civil, architectural and landscaping works.

Besides these, the consultant will have to supervise the construction work and design development.

They have called for tenders for the appointment of a consultant and this process will be completed soon.

In an attempt to make this station a hub, CMRL has planned to link it to various other modes of transport, including MRTS, buses (intercity and inter-State) and suburban railway lines.

Fears of heritage lovers allayed as authorities tell them the building will retain its original maroon colour

If you had passed by the Chennai Central railway station recently, you would have noticed that it was wearing a bit of white. The ‘white’ lead to consternation among heritage watchers, who heaved a sigh of relief when they realised that the colour of this heritage building is not being changed. It is just white primer paint that will prepare the building to painted its original maroon colour.

The facelift, being carried out after five years, is undertaken by the Buildings division of the Southern Railway.

A 20-member team led by the Southern Railway’s divisional engineer (Buildings), Mr. Ramamurthy, will monitor the entire work.

The Chennai Circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) provides technical assistance to Southern Railway in the conservation of the building.

“The station building has had the maroon colour since its inception in 1873. There is no change of colour. As the earlier colour faded, we started to give a fresh coat of paint to make the building look bright,” said a senior railway official.

The painting work will cover around 9,000 sq.m of space of the main building of the railway station.

However, the work will be carried out in segments to ensure the original character and style of the building is maintained.

“Such regular maintenance of heritage buildings is needed. As the building belongs to the Southern Railway, we provide only technical support whenever we are requested by the railways,” said an ASI official.

Designed by British architect George Harding and later by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the Central railway station buildings have some unique Romanesque architectural features, including Travancore ‘caps’ on the main towers, a central clock tower, semi-circular arches, thick walls and large towers.

Most of the churches in England and Portugal in medieval Europe have this style of architecture.

Interestingly, the place where the Central railway station is located now was earlier a garden owned by a Portuguese merchant, John Pereira, before it was taken over by the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway in 1870.

Chennai: Following a series of robbery by gangs on the western suburban railway line and an assault on a woman on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) route, the issue of passenger safety has come into sharp focus.

Government Railway Police (GRP) and Southern Railway are seeking to neutralise this threat to security.

A senior official of GRP said 26 suburban railway stations have been identified for fixing CCTVs as part of the Integrated-Security System (ISS), which is already in place in Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations.

The official pointed out that a survey was carried out jointly by the GRP, RPF and the Signal and Telecommunication wing of the Southern Railway, a few months ago. The security project, which is being handled by the Southern Railway, is in an advanced stage with even the strategic points marked out for fixing the CCTVs.

On the MRTS stretch, nine stations including Park Town, Chintadripet, Triplicane, Light House, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery, have been identified.

Similarly railway stations in Mambalam, Perambur, Korukkupet, Villivakkam, Thiruninravur and Thiruvottiyur are among the 26 railway stations identified for executing the security project.

The official highlighted that a minimum of 10 cameras would be fitted in each of these 26 railway stations.

World Class Central Square near Chennai Central Railway Station - Chief minister J.Jayalalithaa

World Class Central Square near Chennai Central Railway Station - Chief minister J.Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: You might have heard about Times Square in New York and Trafalgar Square in central London. What about such a square in Chennai? The Tamil Nadu government is proposing to develop a Rs 400-crore 'Central Square' near Chennai Central railway station, where various forms of rail transport -- long distance, suburban, Mass Rapid Transport System and the under construction Metro Rail -- are converging.

"I am happy to announce that the areas around Ripon Buildings, suburban railway terminal, Chennai Central railway station, Victoria Hall, government hospital, MRTS station and others will be developed as a world-class Central Square," chief minister J Jayalalithaa said in the assembly on Tuesday.

"This is a key commercial area, and the locality houses the Government General Hospital, Southern Railway headquarters and Corporation of Chennai headquarters," she said.

The government would set up facilities, including parking lots and pavement for pedestrians, with funding from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to ensure seamless traffic at the proposed square, she said.

The estimated funding for this purpose would be financed by Chennai Metro Rail, she added.

Chennai: The long wait for completion of the MRTS stretch be tween Velacherry and St Thomas Mount may be finally over, thanks to the Madras high court.

Chennai: The long wait for completion of the MRTS stretch be tween Velacherry and St Thomas Mount may be finally over, thanks to the Madras high court.

Marking an end of litigation over 4,530sqmt land stretching for about half a kilometer, which had delayed the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Phase-II extension, the high court has said compensation to owners of acquired land at Thillai Ganga Nagar in Nanganallur should be calculated in terms of the new land acquisition law.

In an order which means much higher compensation package to land-losers, Justice M Sathyanarayanan said: “It is not in serious dispute that only a minimal extent of land is to be taken possession and as pointed out by additional advocate general it is only about 4,530sqmt. Once it is taken possession, the project will be complete and the travelling public will be immensely benefited and traffic congestion in Chennai will also be eased.“

The judge also set aside a special tahsildar’s order fixing compensation on the basis of Land Acquisition Act 1894, and directed him to proceed under the new acquisition law the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. “This court is of the view that the interim draft award as well as notices issued under the old act have to be set aside quashed with a consequential direction directing the jurisdictional district collector competent authority to proceed afresh in terms of Sec 40(3) of the new Act.Railway authorities also are not having any serious objection for resorting to such a course. Adoption of such a course, not only advances public interest, but will also avoid further time and cost overrun in the implementation of the project,“ he observed. The order marks culmination of the second round of litigation. The first round started after authorities invoked the emergency clause and dispensed with personal hearing of land owners before their pieces of land were taken over.

The present cases are about notices being issued by the special tahsildar for MRTS phase-II extension calling upon individual land owners to appear before him in person along with documents such as title, patta and tax receipts for 30 years for receiving the compensation package. The notices were dated September 18, 2014. Land owners contested the quantum of compensation saying since the new land acquisition Act came into force on January 1, 2014, their compensation should be in terms of the new Act, and not the old one.

Chennai Metro Rail likely to take over MRTS

Chennai Metro Rail likely to take over MRTS

Chennai:  Almost two years after the idea was proposed, the state government has approached the urban development ministry and railways with a proposal to allow Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to take over the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). The idea is to integrate the city’s rail-based transport systems for a smoother ride for commuters.

The railway board is looking into the proposal, which CMRL made when it did up a comprehensive urban transportation study a few years ago. The study found that MRTS was poorly linked to bus routes and the services were infrequent.

If the CMRL takeover of MRTS materialises, the old system will get a new shot of blood with modernised stations, integrated ticketing systems and better facilities for passengers. Officials said having a single parent agency for both metro rail and MRTS will improve frequency of services taking into consideration passenger demands, and also lead to better maintenance.
