The new and improved Second Generation Vande Bharat Trains Ver 2.0 with enhanced safety features, better ride index and passenger amenities have been successfully introduced over Indian Railways.

Eight rakes of such Vande-Bharat trains are running in regular service (Mumbai Central – Gandhinagar, New Delhi –Amb Andaura, Chennai - Mysuru, Bilaspur-Nagpur, Howrah-New Jalpaiguri, Secundrabad –Vishakhapatnam, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus- Sainagar Shirdi, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Solapur), in addition to the two rakes of first generation of Vande Bharat trains running between New Delhi-Varanasi and New Delhi- Mata Vaishno Devi.

New Vande Bharat Trains have following features:

Faster acceleration and semi High speed operation up to 160 KMPH.

Fully Sealed Gangway for Free Passenger Movement

Automatic Plug Doors

Reclining Ergonomic Seats and Comfortable Seating with revolving seats in executive class.

Better Ride Comfort.

Mobile charging sockets for every seat.

Mini Pantry with provision of Hot Case, Bottle Cooler, Deep freezer & Hot Water Boiler

Direct and Diffused Lighting.

For Divyangjan passengers special lavatory in DTC.

Emergency openable Windows and fire extinguisher in each coach

CCTVs in all Coaches

Emergency Alarm Push buttons and Talk Back Units on all Coaches.

Better fire safety – Aerosol based fire detection and suppression system

Driver-Guard communication with voice recording facility & Crash hardened memory

Coach condition monitoring System (CCMS) display with remote monitoring

Disaster lights – 4 numbers in each coach in case of Emergency

 4 platform side cameras including rear view cameras outside the coach.

Fitted with KAVACH.

Indian Railways has planned to manufacture 75 Vande-Bharat Chair Car Trains that would connect different parts of the country.

Manufacture of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains are also planned for middle and long distance trains journey.

All these trains have design/operating speed of maximum 180/160 kmph.

IR has also envisaged to manufacture Vande-Bharat sleeper trains with speed potential of 200 kmph.

At present, there are no such immediate proposals under consideration.

However, introduction of Vande Bharat services is an ongoing process on Indian Railways subject to operational feasibility, traffic justification, availability of rolling stock etc.

This information was given by the Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronic & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha .

Kolkata, 5thJuly, 2019:
Sri P S Mishra, General Manager, S E Railway inaugurated the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) and CCTV at SER Central Hospital, Garden Reach, this afternoon (05-7-2019). Dr. R K Pani, Chief Medical Director, S E Railway, Dr. Rupa Mitra, Medical Director, S E Railway Central Hospital, Principal Officers of various departments, doctors, paramedics and staff were present in the inaugural ceremony. General Manager while inaugurating the programmesaid that this kind of endeavour is necessary for a big and prime railway hospital. GM also said that this would improve the efficiency of doctors, nurses, paramedics and staff of hospital and they will remain vigilant every time during their duty.
Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) will generate and maintain the data of Out Patients Department (OPD) registration, Indoor Patients Department (IPD) admission &discharge, medicine store,delivery of pathological reports, x-ray reports etc. of the patients of the hospital. This data pool will help in providing services in a better way to the beneficiaries in future visits. This will also reduce paper work to a great extent in the hospital. This data may also be used as a source of research data as ours is a medical teaching hospital. This will reduce waitingtime of the patients attending hospital for treatment and will make the registration process faster.
The particulars of a patient and the progress of his or her treatment can be observed by the health professionals effortlessly at the click of a mouse.
As many as 29 CCTV have been installed in wards, gates and corridors of Central Hospital. This will help in keeping constant surveillance for the safety and security of patients, relatives of patients, doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital o­n 24x7 basis.

Kapurthala: The first coach of the Railway’s premium offering – the premium Tejas brand of trains – has been built at the Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala and is expected to be put on trial soon. According to RCF officials, the coach will be sent to the Indian Railways to decide on which section the 130 kmph coach will be tested. According to the current schedule, officials said the train is likely to be commissioned by the Railways in February next year. The Railways plan to make three such rakes, said officials.

One of the biggest challenges, officials said, would be fitting television screens on the back of the seats, a unique initiative that has not been done on Indian trains previously. However, it is yet to be ascertained how these enhanced features will perform at top speeds. Officials, however, said the first coach built do not have TV screens fitted into the seats yet. The blue and yellow seats have an ergonomic design and provide a high level of comfort as compared to the seats fitted in the higher class coaches of trains currently.

The Tejas train is positioned for the business traveller who is willing to pay more for superior travelling comforts, said railway officials. The nine sectors identified by the Railways that will attract passengers for Tejas include Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kanpur, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Mysuru-Bengaluru-Chennai, Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Hyderabad and Nagpur-Secunderabad. Officials said no specific route has been chosen for the Tejas rake.

Tejas will operate at speeds of 130 kmph and above and offer onboard services such as entertainment, local cuisine, WiFi. Tejas coaches will be equipped with 22 new features, including entertainment screens for each passenger along with phone socket and LED boards for communicating safety instructions. There will be water level indicators in bio-vacuum toilets, sensorised taps and hand driers; will have CCTVs, and fire and smoke detection and suppression system.

Tejas, Hamsafar Express services in railway’s new timetable

Tejas, Hamsafar, Antodaya and Udaya Express trains are among 30 new services which are part of the new railway timetable.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today launched the new timetable “Train at a Glance”, which will become effective from October 1.
“All these new services of express trains — Tejas, Hamsafar, Antodaya and Udaya — were promised in the Rail Budget. So we are fulfilling our budget promises by incorporating all these services in the new timetable,” Prabhu said, releasing the timetable.
Destinations and schedules of 10 Hamsafar Express, seven Antodaya Express, three each of Uday Express and Tejas Express trains have found place in the new timetable.
The release of new railway timetable was delayed for a month as the routes and destinations of new proposed services announced in the Rail Budget could not be finalised due to various reasons.
“Launching date of the new services will be announced later,” he said.
Fares of Tejas and Hamsafar Express trains will be higher than the existing fare structure.
Besides the new services, travel time of 350 existing trains have been reduced, 75 of which have made it to the superfast category. 240 operational halts have been converted into commercial stoppages and the train connectivity to the northeastern states of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram have found mention in the timetable.
According to the new timetable, Faizabad-Lucknow passenger train has been merged with Saharanpur-Lucknow and would run as a single service between Faizabad and Saharanpur.
Also, New Delhi-Bhatinda Shatabdi Express would be extended till Firozpur. According to the schedule, while Anand Vihar-Gorakhpur Hamsafar Express will be tri-weekly, rest of nine Hamsafar will be weekly service.

MUMBAI: In the wake of the Diva gangrape case where a 25-year-old woman pressed charges against four Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, the top brass has decided instal electronic surveillance at 38 outposts on Central Railway. The footage will have to be viewed by the inspector in-charge every morning.
At present, only key RPF outposts are covered with CCTV cameras.
At minor railway stations, such as Diva, RPF outposts are located away from the platform and manned only by one or two staffers at night; it's often difficult for the in-charge to know what happened in his absence. "Though the gangrape charge is still being probed by the Mumbra police, we want to ensure that such an incident never happens again," said AK Singh, chief security commissioner (RPF) CR.
Budgetary allocations were made under the Nirbhaya Fund this year to instal CCTV cameras at railway stations that didn't have electronic surveillance. Senior officials said a portion of the fund will be used to instal cameras at the RPF outposts.
In 2015, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre and state governments to instal CCTV cameras at local police stations and in interrogation rooms to prevent custodial torture. "We decided to use the same principal at our outposts. Cameras will be placed at the entrance of the outpost in such a manner as to capture all goings-on inside. The idea is to prevent instances of custodial torture or molestation of a complainant or accused Each camera is IP-based. This means the footage can also be viewed at the headquarters. The cameras should serve as a deterrant," said a senior official. "We will also sensitize our staffers."
The only hitch is that the videorecording would stay maximum for a month, before being overwritten. This won't help in cases where complainants come forward much after the incident.

Safety and Security of Railway Passenger 

Policing on Railways being a State subject, prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law and order in Railway premises as well as on running trains are the statutory responsibility of the State Governments, which they discharge through Government Railway Police (GRP). However, Railway Protection Force (RPF) supplements the efforts of the GRP to provide security to passengers including women. 

The following measures are being taken by Railways for safety and security of passengers including women passengers in trains: 

1.On vulnerable and identified routes/ sections, 2500 trains (on an average) are escorted by Railway Protection Force daily, in addition to 2200 trains escorted by Government Railway Police of different States daily. 

2.The ladies special trains running in Metropolitan cities are being escorted by lady RPF constables. 

3.The ladies compartments in sub-urban trains running in metropolitan cities are being escorted by RPF and GRP. Staff deployment is made during late night and early morning in such trains to ensure proper security to the lady passengers. 

4.Security Help Line number 182 is made operational over Indian Railways for security related assistance to passengers in distress. 

5.Regular drives are conducted to prevent entry of male passengers in compartments reserved for ladies, and if found, they are prosecuted under the provisions of Railways Act. 

6.Surveillance is kept through CCTV cameras, provided at about 344 stations over Indian Railways, to ensure safety and security of passengers. 

7.RPF holds regular coordination meetings with State Police at all levels to ensure proper registration and investigation of crime by GRP. 

(b): Regular analysis of passenger crime is done to identify the affected trains, stations and sections and accordingly security arrangements are made for the safety and security of passengers in close co-ordination with GRP. 

The Security Help Line 182 has been very effective in meeting security related complaints of passengers. During the year 2015 and 2016 (upto June), 7897 and 6092 number of complaints were received respectively over Help Line number 182. The routes on Central Railway followed by North Central Railway and Northern Railway are found to be receiving maximum number of complaints. 

Presently, provision of CCTV on 500 coaches including for ladies compartments has been sanctioned. Provision of CCTV for ladies compartment shall be done progressively as induction of coaches and earmarking of ladies compartment in coaches is a continual process.

Kolkata, 29th April, 2016:

Bokaro Steel City Railway Station RPF Post rescued a girl, aged about 15 years, who was missing from Train No.18103 Jalianwalabagh Express from 00:50 hours on 28/4/2016 during journey from Tatanagar to Buxar from Sleeper Class Coach No.S-8.
Information was given by her uncle to the Sub Inspector on duty at RPF Post through GRP escort available on the said train that the girl was missing after the train left Bokaro Steel City Station. Then and then RPF personnel of Bokaro Steel City Railway Station started search operation. 
On the basis of CCTV footage the girl was traced from the station premises. The RPF personnel accommodated the girl safely under lady RPF personnel and after proper verification, the girl was handed over to her family.

NEW DELHI:  Shan-e-Punjab Express today became country's first train to have CCTV cameras installed in all coaches, as part of Railways' efforts to strengthen security of passengers particularly women travellers.

"We have promised it in the budget and today we have fulfilled our promise," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said after flagging off the CCTV-equipped train from Amritsar through video-conferencing in the national capital.

About 122 surveillance cameras have been installed in all 21 coaches including ladies compartment of Shan-e-Punjab Express at an estimated cost of Rs. 36 lakh.

"Passengers' security is our prime concern and measures have been taken for it. There are helplines, CCTV and integrated security system being provided at many stations," he said.

The CCTVs have been installed strategically at all doors and Mr Prabhu assured that the new measure will not compromise the privacy of passengers instead will act as deterrent against crime.

The guard's compartment of the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-e-Punjab Express has been provided with a LCD screen for monitoring CCTV footage in the women's coach for prompt action.

CCTV footage of all coaches are being recorded on a portable device with a storage capacity of one month and can be retrieved by security personnel whenever required. Railways aims to equip more trains with such facilities to curb crime against women and reduce thefts and other such incidents in trains.

If a bulk order of CCTV is given then the cost will come down significantly, he said and added "We want to put it on the fast track and we are working it out."

Referring to cyber security, he said it is an issue and we have to address it through technology. Seeking states' cooperation, he said law and order is a state issue and we have to enhance security at rail premises with state governments' cooperation.

Notably, three coaches in a Mumbai suburban train have also been equipped with CCTV cameras on a pilot basis.

Security has been identified as one of the priority areas for strengthening and upgradation. Measures initiated to strengthen security of women commuters include operationalization of 182 All India Security Helpline, development of security App over some of the zonal Railways, prosecution of offenders under relevant sections of Indian Railways, surveillance in station premises through CCTV etc.

New Delhi: Indian Railways’ Maharajas’ Express, the world’s leading luxury train, chugged out of a Delhi station on Sunday on a royal odyssey to take its patrons across the famed ‘Golden Triangle’, signaling the beginning of its first journey of the new tourist season.

A signature enterprise of Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the magnificent train, known for unmatched hospitality and off-train excursion, runs on five circuits across north-west and central India, covering around a dozen destinations, mainly in Rajasthan, between the tourist months of October and March.

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director Dr. AK Manocha, who was present at Safdarjung station from where the train steamed out, said plans are afoot to run Maharajas’ Express during the off-season too (April-September) with some concession.

“During the lean season, we may offer one free ticket for every single booking. Thus, a couple can board the train by buying one only one ticket,” he informed.

The Safdarjung station wore a festive look on the occasion; Uttaranchal Pipe Band played music, shehnai and tabla players showed their expertise and immaculately-dressed staff stood in tows as the exuberant guests boarded the 23-coach, half-a-mile-long train that looked resplendent in maroon exterior with a golden hue.

The three-night/four-day trip, known as ‘Treasures of India’ will offer the guests an opportunity to explore and experience the rich cultural heritage of Incredible India, including the Taj Mahal, mighty fortresses and exquisite palaces (in Jaipur) and the Ranthambore National Park.

The train, which began its inaugural run in March 2010, has won a hat-trick of the coveted World Travel Award-from 2012 to 2014. Last month, it bagged the prestigious ‘Seven Star Luxury Hospitality and Lifestyle Awards’ for the category “Seven Star Experience” at a function in Bali, Indonesia. The luxury train also won the CNBC Travel Award for the second time in June this year.

During 2014-15, 1,144 passengers boarded the train in 33 trips with a total income of Rs 47.89 crore as against 865 passengers in 28 trips and an income of Rs 36.27 crore in 2013-14.

With exquisite interiors, state of the art amenities and impeccable hospitality, Maharajas’ Express has four cabin configurations-Deluxe, Junior Suite, Suite and President Suite.

Each guest cabin comes equipped with RFID door locks, individual temperature control, fire alarm, attached washrooms with showers, electronic safe, live television, DVD player, WiFi Internet and a water filtration plant. Besides round the clock valet service, a paramedic is available throughout the journey of the train, which is equipped with CCTV cameras. There is a souvenir shop also.

There are two tastefully done dining cars as well, offering a range of delicacies. The seating capacity of the dining cars is 84 to ensure that all guests eat together. A bar car, named Safari, and the lounge, known as the Rajah Club, have well stocked bar. In the dining car, guests enjoy meals in gold-crested plates and spoons that have been imported from Paris.

The tariff, ranging between 3850 US dollars and 23,700 dollars depending on the train’s five circuits, includes meals, house wines and spirits, sightseeing and services of experienced guides. All the living cabins have been named after precious gems, such as Firoza, Moti, Manik, Panna and Hakik, in an effort to recreate the mystique of royal grandeur of a bygone era.

“There are many distinct features that set Maharajas’ Express leagues apart of its contemporaries. It commands huge brand equity in the world,” said Dr. Manocha.

India Post wants ICF to install cameras in RMS coaches

Chennai: Alarmed over the increasing incidents of parcels and articles reported missing from Railway Mail Service (RMS) coaches of various trains, while in transit, the India Post is considering to request the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) to install CCTVs cameras in coaches.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ICF’s diamond jubilee celebrations here, Chief Postmaster General for Tamil Nadu Charles Lobo said, “I have written to higher officials to request the coach-maker ICF to install CCTV cameras in RMS coaches so as to enable surveillance on our staff and the parcels.”
Replying to a query on whether there have been complaints of missing parcels while in transit, he said there have been cases reported in various cities. “There are allegations of our staff involved in missing parcels. We can’t say anything for sure unless there is proof. Cameras would help us in surveillance.”

Referring to CCTV cameras, the ICF has installed in coaches for women passengers to check offences against them, he said, “This way we could use technology to reduce crimes. Also, the image of India Post has to be protected and we have to handle the parcels with more care.”

Mr. Lobo had also mentioned the proposal during his speech at the function in the presence of Union Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha, General Manager Ashok Agarwal and other senior officials of the Railways.

ICF rolls out IGBT coaches

The first unit of the indigenously manufactured ‘insulated-gate bipolar transistor’ (IGBT) based electrical multiple units (EMUs) were flagged off by the Union Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha during the diamond jubilee celebrations on Friday here.

The three-phase EMUs, which can save energy up to 30 per cent and has other features, including sliding doors for air-conditioned coaches, would be used in Mumbai initially.

Energy efficient

The Railways has only been using three-phase propulsion systems for diesel locomotives, electric locomotives and diesel electric multiple units so far and the three-phase IGBT coaches are considered energy efficient.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the function, Mr. Sinha said that the ICF has produced and exported quality coaches and its functions would grow in the future.

Asked about media reports on the Railways losing over 150 million passengers within five years in the current fiscal, the Minister said, “There were some factors like the accident in Itarsi. We are working on ensuring that the Railways continues to serve the people and as the issues are resolved, we hope to get the passengers and we would not lose out on the revenue.” A major fire, which had broken out at the Route Relay Interlocking panel at the Itarsi Railway Station on June 17 had led to the cancellation of over 2,400 trains and eventually disturbed the railway traffic across the country.

26 Suburban Rail stations in Chennai to get CCTV Surveillance System

Chennai: Following a series of robbery by gangs on the western suburban railway line and an assault on a woman on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) route, the issue of passenger safety has come into sharp focus.

Government Railway Police (GRP) and Southern Railway are seeking to neutralise this threat to security.

A senior official of GRP said 26 suburban railway stations have been identified for fixing CCTVs as part of the Integrated-Security System (ISS), which is already in place in Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations.

The official pointed out that a survey was carried out jointly by the GRP, RPF and the Signal and Telecommunication wing of the Southern Railway, a few months ago. The security project, which is being handled by the Southern Railway, is in an advanced stage with even the strategic points marked out for fixing the CCTVs.

On the MRTS stretch, nine stations including Park Town, Chintadripet, Triplicane, Light House, Mylapore, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery, have been identified.

Similarly railway stations in Mambalam, Perambur, Korukkupet, Villivakkam, Thiruninravur and Thiruvottiyur are among the 26 railway stations identified for executing the security project.

The official highlighted that a minimum of 10 cameras would be fitted in each of these 26 railway stations.

Swift Action by RPF Rescues Minor Girl Child

Swift action taken by the personnel of Railway Protection Force (RPF), South Central Railway led to the rescue of a minor girl child who went missing from  Secunderabad Railway Station.

The incident occurred when RPF personnel at Secunderabad Railway Station were approached and reported regarding missing of a minor girl child by her parents at Secunderabad Railway Station o­n 18th September 2015. The RPF personnel swung into action and searched the railway station premises and scanned the Closed Circuit Television’s (CCTV) footage at Secunderabad Railway Station the same day and found that the girl had boarded Narasapur Express by mistake. By that time the train was about to reach Vijayawada Railway Station.

Acting immediately, the RPF personnel of Secunderabad informed the matter to their counterparts at Vijayawada who were able to locate and rescue the girl o­n arrival of the train at Vijayawada in the early hours next day i.e. 19th September 2015.  The girl was kept in the safe custody of CHILDLINE, Vijayawada. Later, the girl was handed over to the parents who rushed to Vijayawada o­n receipt of information

Railways to step up passenger security measures

Kochi: Six ‘A’ category stations including Ernakulam North and Kottayam will come under the eyes of CCTV cameras soon as the Railways is ready with a proposal to step up security cover and passenger security measures.

Only five major stations out of the 169 railway stations in the State have CCTV cameras. This alarming security gap, incidentally admitted to by officials concerned, has come to the fore post the attack against a blind couple in a moving train near Kottayam on August 8.

“The division has submitted a proposal for approval by Chennai headquarters for setting up CCTV cameras at vital spots of six ‘A’ category stations namely Ernakulam North, Kottayam, Chengannur, Nagercoil, Aluva and Kayamkulam, “said K P James, Assistant Commissioner, RPF.

As per the proposal, each station is expected to get at least five high quality surveillance cameras, to be installed at strategic locations including entry and exit points besides a control room for monitoring.

Confirming the proposal, Aroma Singh Thakur, Deputy Inspector-General – cum – Additional Chief Security Commissioner, RPF, Southern Railway said stations like Chengannur had been witnessing huge rush of passengers, especially during the Sabarimala season.

“Hence, we have fast-tracked the plans to bring smaller stations too under camera surveillance, especially in view of the increasing security threats to the passengers’’ explained the official.

The stations that have CCTV surveillance system at present are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam Junction, Thrissur – all A1 stations having annual earnings of over Rs 50 crore under the Thiruvanathapuram Railway division, in addition to Kozhikode.

Of this, Thiruvanthapuram and Ernakulam has a network of 60 cameras each while the system in Kollam and Thrissur comprise 21 cameras each.

Senior Railway officials pointed out that the absence of CCTV cameras is proving to be a major stumbling block in prevention of crimes, especially in some of the major stations like Aluva- where migrant labourers are concentrated in large numbers.

“The situation is more alarming in the wake of reports about the operation of some inter-state theft rackets based on railway stations and trains’’, pointed out a senior official.

The railway police have so far recorded about 133 theft cases in the first seven months of 2015.

NEW DELHI: To provide better amenities to passengers, Railways unveiled a new AC 3-tier coach here with state-of-the-art facilities including CCTV cameras, bio-toilets and improved safety features.

The interiors of the coach, with better security and comfort features, have been designed aesthetically, said Railway Board Member (Mechanic) Hemant Kumar.

While CCTV cameras have been installed at the entrance of the coach on both the sides to strengthen the security system, fire-retardant materials have been used to prevent fire as a safety measure.

Manufactured at the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the AC coach is equipped with wider stainless steel ladder with hand-holds for easy climbing to upper berths.

Besides, the coach has also been fitted with braille stickers for the convenience of visually-impaired passengers.

Asked about the cost of the enhanced features, Kumar said an additional Rs 7.2 lakhs were spent to upgrade the coach with better amenities.

For faster evacuation in case of emergency, the door of the coach has been made to swing both ways. The bi-directional swing door is a new feature which is likely to be a norm for all new coaches in future.

This new compartment is the 50,000th coach rolled out from ICF and is likely to be fitted in a train bound for the southern states.

Mumbai: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will inaugurate the Integrated Security System (ISS) installed with a total cost Rs 21.72 Crore at four railway stations in the metropolis comprising CST, Dadar, Kurla and LTT on Monday.

He will also inaugurate the modified foot over bridge (FOB) to facilitate passenger movement at Diva, new FOB at Vithalwadi apart from laying the foundation stone of a multi-level two-wheeler parking at Thane.

According to PR department of Central Railway, a total of 118 CCTVs have been installed at Dadar station as part of ISS along with six monitors of 42 inches. While describing salient features of modified FOB at Diva, the statement said the width of extended foot over bridge is four meters and the length is 2.5 meters across PF No 1 and 2 with an approximate cost at Rs 75 lakh.

On multi-level two-wheeler parking at Thane, it said that under Phase-I, the work for the ground plus two structure involving shifting of some offices on the proposed site was completed in June 2015. Under Phase-II, work on parking is expected to be complete by December 2016. The total parking area after this would be 3000 sqmt against the 700 sqmt earlier.

The total cost of the project is Rs 5.50 crore,” said the statement. The new FOB at Vithalwadi has been built with a total cost of Rs 2.34 crore which has the width of 4.88 meters and length is 30 meters. Minister of State for Power Piyush Goyal, New and Renewable Energy Minister Divakar Raote, Maharashtra Transport Minister Subhash Desai, Industries Minister Eknath Shinde along with other ministers would be present on the occasion.

Bangalore: Suburban and special/premium trains under the South Western Railway are likely to have Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras soon as part of a larger plan of the railways to ensure safety of women and check crimes in trains.

The proposal on installing CCTV cameras, which had been pending for long, has been cleared. But it’s unclear when the cameras will actually be installed in trains under the SWR. Sanjiv Agarwal, Division Railway Manager, Bengaluru, said that they were yet to receive information about which trains under the SWR would be equipped with CCTV cameras. “Suburban trains are most likely to have the cameras first, followed by special/premier trains,” he added.

CCTV cameras were first installed in trains under the Northern and Southern railway zones as a pilot project. The railway budget for 2015-16 mentioned installing CCTV cameras in suburban and premier trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, etc.

Nirbhaya Fund 

According to railway officials, since the prime objective of installing CCTV cameras is to make women feel safer, the Nirbhaya Fund would be utilised for the purpose. Nirbhaya Fund was set up to spend on issues of women’s safety, following the Delhi gang rape of 2012.

The new system will help keep tabs on miscreants harassing women passengers in trains. The railways registered the highest number of molestation cases on running trains in 2013-2014. There were also incidents of assault on women in railway compartments. Surveillance cameras would be installed in select coaches and personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) would monitor them. CCTV cameras at railways stations are monitored by RPF personnel.

But the big question is, will the move achieve its intended objective? That’s difficult to say, according to Sudha S, who travels frequently from her hometown Bhopal to Bengaluru where she lives.

She feels the move may not act as a deterrent to molesters. “CCTV cameras may record men molesting women in trains or thieves decamping with passengers’ valuables. But will that result in the security personnel catching the offenders in trains?

The railways should first deploy enough security personnel, only then can the cameras help,” she reasoned.

Bhopal (BPL): Now, Bhopal station is under round-the-clock vigil of railways. An integrated security system (ISS) was inaugurated by Bhopal MP Alok Sanjar on Saturday as part of ongoing railway passengers’ week.

The system has 80 CCTVs and would monitor all platforms, booking offices, reservation offices, waiting rooms, foot-over-bridge (FoB) and all major points at Bhopal station. The CCTVs have been installed with a view to improve passenger safety services and monitoring cleanliness inside the station premises.

A control room too has been established where RPF personnel and other railway staff would carry on 24X7 monitoring of the feed from cameras. Present DRM Alok Kumar and MLA Vishwas Sarang were also present at Bhopal station.

The ISS was inaugurated by previous DRM Bhopal Rajiv Chaudhary on October 28 last year. He had also said the number of cameras may be increased depending upon need and may also be repositioned after initial feedback.

Sanjar also inaugurated extended cover over shed at platform no 1 of Habibganj railway station, followed by washable apron of platforms 2 and 4. The extended shed would benefit passengers of trains like Shatabdi Express ahead of monsoons and also from scorching sun.

Addressing media at Habibganj station, Sanjar said over sheds at platforms 2/3 and 4/5 would be constructed soon. Also, he assured that demands like increasing capacity of first class waiting room, construction of new service bridge at Pul Bodge would be looked into.

Railway officials, including senior divisional commercial manager Brijendra Kumar and local MLA Surendranath Singh was also present at Habibganj station during the programme.

DRM Alok Kumar also inspected the waiting rooms, toilets, concourse areas, food stalls, foot-over-bridge (FoB), cleanliness and hygiene at platforms, enquiry counters, parking areas, dormitories, and retiring rooms at Bhopal station on Saturday.

He also spoke to passengers about quality of food at the station and inspected rate list of food items sold.

Passenger Amenities at Guwahati station are poised for a major uplift. Ministry of Railways has entrusted IRCON International Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking under Govt. of India to bring about a visible improvement in passenger amenities through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund. IRCON officials led by its GM/Eastern Region Shri B.Sarkar accompanied by Shri S.Nayar, ADRM/Lumding/N.F.Railway inspected the Guwahati station o­n 27th May, 2015 as part of the o­ngoing Passenger Facilitation Fortnight. To improve the passenger amenity, it has been proposed to provide Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant of 2000 litres per hour capacity for safe drinking water at platform no. 2, 3, 4 & 5.Two hydraulic lifts are to be provided for easier access to the Foot Over Bridges. Golf carts for use by old persons and persons with disabilities are also to be provided. Existing toilets in waiting halls, retiring rooms, and dormitory will also be renovated. Flexible steel dustbins will be provided throughout the station for improving the existing garbage disposal system. Circulating area at Guwahati station will be provided with retro-reflective road marker, solar studs and o­ne way spike breaker. New retro-reflective signage will be provided at different platforms for better guidance to passengers. Railway is also trying to improve the platform surface by using Kota stone which will help in mechanized cleaning. More CCTV cameras will also be provided for improving the security of the station. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be shortly entered into by N.F.Railway and IRCON for the implementation of these Passenger Amenity improvement works at Guwahati which is the largest station of the Zone and a gateway to the Northeast. These measures are expected to further benefit passengers and rail users of the region.

WESTERN RAILWAY launches CCTV Cameras in a Ladies Coach from 29th May, 2015

In a move towards ensuring safety of women commuters who travel by its local trains, Western Railway has installed Electronic Surveillance System (CCTV)   inside a ladies compartment on trial basis.  The system will be launched from 29th May, 2015 during the Upbhokta Pakwada being observed on Western Railway from 26th May to 9th June 2015.

The electronic surveillance system in ladies coaches is being installed in three EMU rakes initially. 4 to 8 surveillance cameras are planned in each ladies coach to provide maximum coverage of entire area. The system records the data in a digital video recorder which has sufficient capacity to store the data for 30 days. This data can be used by investigating agency, in case of any incidence involving security of lady commuters.

The cameras have a resolution of three mega pixels with wide angles to cover all corners of the compartment. It is installed in such a way so that the entry & exit of the compartment is covered completely to capture images of all who enter & exit the compartment. These cameras are customized for requirement of the Railway and are based on traction technology that can withstand shock and vibrations as trains often clock 80-100 kmph on suburban section.

Shri S K Sood, General Manager, Western Railway will be present on the occasion of launching of the surveillance system along with senior officers. Subsequent to introduction of this rake in service, feedback will be obtained from all concerned before extending it to other EMU rakes.

The introduction of electronic surveillance system in ladies compartments of the suburban trains, the first of its kind, will go a long way in instilling the sense of security among the women commuters while acting as a strong deterrent to the anti social elements.
