CLEFT LIP AND PALATE SURGERY CAMP ORGANISED AT SER CENTRAL HOSPITAL UNDER ‘’MISSION SMILE’’
Kolkata, 7th February, 2020:
South Eastern Railway in assistance with Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) is organizing a Free Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Surgery Camp for the children who are born cleft & to repair their common birth defects at South Eastern Railway Central Hospital, Garden Reach from 7th to 10th February, 2020 under “Mission Smile”, a Medical Charitable Trust active for this kind of surgeries. This is the 11th‘Mission Smile’ camp in this hospital and the 108th in the country.
Sri Sanjay Kumar Mohanty, General Manager, South Eastern Railway inaugurated the Surgery Camp in presence of a group of expert doctors , paramedical staff, trained nurses and volunteers from all over theworld. Dr. B K Sethi, Principal Chief Medical Director, South Eastern Railway and other Senior Doctors and Principal Officers attended the programme. Dr. Anjana Malhotra, Additional Chief Health Director and an eminent Plastic Surgeon of SER Central Hospital has taken the lead to success this noble cause. This apart, a team of experts from the field of Plastic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, Dentists, Speech Language, Pathology etc. are actively participating to help the mission.
General Manager, South Eastern Railway while inaugurating the surgery camp thanked the team of doctors and volunteers associated with “Mission Smile” for making such noble act a great success. General Manager also said that South Eastern Railway Central Hospital has been fostering this kind of humanitarian programme in collaboration with “Mission Smile” for last few years and will extend all sorts of help in coming days too.
As many as 150 patients were screened for operation, out of which, 120 patients would be undertaken for Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Surgeries to bring the children in normal life without any deformity. Children born with cleft lip and cleft palate are facing a number of emotional and social difficulties both for parents and children. Cleft lip and palate repair is being performed to improve the child patients ability to speak and hear properly and the children feel more comfortable with their appearance.
South Eastern Railway Central Hospital, Garden Reach, Kolkata is a premier 303 bed, multidisciplinary, multi-specialty tertiary care centre. This is not only a Zonal Referral Hospital but also a referral centre for the Eastern Railway, Metro Railway, North East Frontier Railway and East Central Railway in certain specialties. This Hospital is rendering all sorts of support for organizing such benevolent camp year after year for better causes.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) beneficiary holder gets an e-card, can avail service at any of the empanelled hospitals any where in the country.
The coverage includes:
·3 days pre-hospitalization and 15 days of post-hospitalization expenses
·Around 1400 procedures with all related costs like OT expenses are taken care
·PMJAY extends coverage for over 1,350 medical packages at empanelled public and private hospitals
·It provides coverage of Rs.5 lakh/family/year

Sri P S Mishra, General Manager, S E Railway inaugurated the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) and CCTV at SER Central Hospital, Garden Reach, this afternoon (05-7-2019). Dr. R K Pani, Chief Medical Director, S E Railway, Dr. Rupa Mitra, Medical Director, S E Railway Central Hospital, Principal Officers of various departments, doctors, paramedics and staff were present in the inaugural ceremony. General Manager while inaugurating the programmesaid that this kind of endeavour is necessary for a big and prime railway hospital. GM also said that this would improve the efficiency of doctors, nurses, paramedics and staff of hospital and they will remain vigilant every time during their duty.
Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) will generate and maintain the data of Out Patients Department (OPD) registration, Indoor Patients Department (IPD) admission &discharge, medicine store,delivery of pathological reports, x-ray reports etc. of the patients of the hospital. This data pool will help in providing services in a better way to the beneficiaries in future visits. This will also reduce paper work to a great extent in the hospital. This data may also be used as a source of research data as ours is a medical teaching hospital. This will reduce waitingtime of the patients attending hospital for treatment and will make the registration process faster.
The particulars of a patient and the progress of his or her treatment can be observed by the health professionals effortlessly at the click of a mouse.
As many as 29 CCTV have been installed in wards, gates and corridors of Central Hospital. This will help in keeping constant surveillance for the safety and security of patients, relatives of patients, doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital on 24x7 basis.

PAEDIATRIC WARD WITH SICK NEW BORN CARE UNIT SET UP AT ASANSOL RAILWAY HOSPITAL
Kolkata, 7 November, 2016:
A six bedded paediatric ward along with two-bedded sick new born care unit has been set up at Divisional Railway Hospital, Eastern Railway, Asansol.
The basic objective behind setting up the new born care unit is to reduce the case of fatality among sick new-borns either born within the hospital or outside including home delivery. It also extends clinical care for sick neonates to bring down the neonatal mortality rate. Strengthening the new born clinical services within the health care system of Asansol Railway Hospital of Eastern Railway is much needed component of a comprehensive intervention for reducing neonatal deaths.
This Sick New-born Care Unit will also act as the teaching and training hub for imparting the skills of new-born care.
This facility is second in Eastern Railway next to B. R. Singh Hospital, Sealdah.

Jaipur: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has been winning accolades for his prompt replies to tweets of passengers in distress and following it up with swift action. Let’s hope this would be the case here too.
Family members of late fourth-class employee, Vijaypal, allege that the gross negligence of the doctors and nursing staff at North-West Railway Hospital, Jaipur, cost the man lost his life. And, he is not the only unlucky one. Recently, railway worker Suman Sharma’s daughter too lost her life due to the carelessness of the hospital staff, reportedly.
After Vijaypal’s death, members of the labour union staged a protest outside the MD’s house.
Allegations have been made that doctors hired on contract basis treat the patients while permanent doctors are busy making money.
Senior railway officers have remained mum on the two deaths which occurred in the span of two months.
Lack of action
Vijaypal’s son Krishna Bihari alleges that he got his father admitted into the railway hospital on Saturday. Gynecologist Bhavna Garg checked his blood pressure and then nobody turned up. He alleges that he requested the doctors to refer him to another hospital, but nothing was done. His father passed away later in the night.
Officials avoid railway hospitals
Allegations have been made that senior officers don’t get themselves treated in railway hospitals as they are aware of the inefficiency of the doctors. They are either referred to another hospital or go to another doctor.

Dear Sir,
Sub: Creation of posts of Dieticians in Railway Hospitals on Indian Railways-reg.
For quite sometime, the Federation has been receivmg grievances from the Railway employees over non-availability of Dieticians in various Railway Hospitals at Zonal/Divisional level, causing hardships to the employees (serving/retired) but is also affecting adversely the quality of medical treatment in absence of proper dietary advice. In the present day environment there is necessity of a dietician in the Railway Hospitals where there are more than 25 beds and about 1,000 patients (Railway employees and their families plus RELHS beneficiaries).
Federation further desires to state that the Dieticians are qualified professionals with skills to provide expert nutrition and dietary advice to the patients for improvement and up keep of health. The Federation places below the duties and responsibilities which are expected of a Dietician to improve nutrition care:-
• Creation of an institutional culturev
• Redefining clinician’s role by inclusion of nutritional care of patients,
• Recognize and diagnose all malnourished patients and also those at risk,
• Rapidly implementing comprehensive nutrition intervention and continued monitoring,
• Communication of nutritional care plans,
• Developing a comprehensive discharge, nutritional care and education plan.
ROLE OF DIETICIAN IN PATIENT’S RECOVERY:-
Clinical Dieticians monitor, assess, and optimize nutrition status based on the patient’s medical condition and/or nutrition adequacy.
They confer with physicians and other health care professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs, and they make recommendations for tube and intravenous feedings and/or dietary supplements.
Clinical Dieticians counsel and educate patients how to make nutritionally sound food choices to speed up the recovery process, prevent disease and maintain good health.
Dieticians provide food and nutrition information, and support people to improve their health. They provide advice on nutrition-related matters and modify diets to help manage
conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases (atheroscelerosis, angina, coronary heart disease, •
stroke ,hypertension), liver diseases(Fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, liver
cirrhosis, hepatitis A,B,C), lung diseases(Asthma ,chronic obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia, tuberculosis), overweight and obesity, constipation, cancer, food allergies, Anaemia and food intolerance, any type of cancer cases.
The following is the number of Central, Divisional, Sub-Divisional & Production Unit
Hospitals on the Indian Railways:-
(i) Central Hospitals = 64
(ii) Divisional Hospitals = 112
(iii) Sub-Divisional/PU Hospitals = 55
Total = 231
Federation is sad to note that there are only 24 posts of Dieticians in about 22 Railway Hospitals” on Indian Railways. This proves that the posts of Dieticians have not been provided adequately in each Railway Hospital despite the fact that these Hospitals have more beds. It is needless to point out that in the Hospitals where there is Dietician, the ratio of Dietician to patient is 1:300-500 which itself is quite alarming and needs deployment of more staff of this category.
It is to be appreciated that ‘Diet and Nutrition’ is immensely helping in the treatment of diseases like Hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, hepatitis and nephritis, hyperuremia and saves considerable amount towards the cost of medicine and the allied treatment.
NFIR, therefore, requests the Railway Board to accord approval for creation of posts of Dieticians in Railway Hospitals to ensure proper Health Care to the Railway employees and the RELHS beneficiaries. Federation may please kept advised of action taken in the matter.

MADURAI: Indian Railways will continue the ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission till March 2016, when ‘Sardar Patel United Clean India Drive’ would be implemented, with focus on cleanliness at stations, hospitals and office premises, a senior official said here today.
The focus would be on stations from October 11 to 31, followed by railway colonies from December 16 to 31 and Railway Hospitals from February 15 to 28. Later systematic efforts would be taken to achieve sustained cleanliness and improvement in the environment, Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg said, quoting Railway board chairman’s communique.
Speaking to reporters here today, he said a larger section of staff and public would be involved in the cleanliness drive and uncovered areas also would be taken up in a phased manner.
He also said the Safety Commissioner was expected to inspect the Pollachi-Palghat Broad Gauge conversion work on October 5 and 6. If clearance was received, trains bound for Gujarat, Maharashtra and Mangalore could be operated through this section.
This would reduce the distance between Madurai and Mangalore and other states, including Maharashtra and Gujarat, considerably by about 100 to 150 km, he said.

Coimbatore / Kannur: About 250 railway employees attached to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) staged a demonstration in front of the Railway Hospital at Podanur on Tuesday, condemning railways for their proposed plan to make that hospital into a health unit.

The protesters said that in a recent visit to the hospital, a senior railway hospital authority had reportedly suggested that a health unit would be sufficient to meet the requirements here.
They said that facilities, doctors and availability of staff in the hospital would be reduced if it was made a health unit.
Employees said that there were more than 5,000 families of railway employees and retired railway employees residing in Podanur and nearby areas and that the hospital was catering to all their medical needs.
They said that on degrading it, their families would have to get treated in nearby private hospitals or travel far to reach the nearest railway hospital.
SRMU’s Salem Division and district level representatives also participated in the protest

Likewise, the Kannur branch of the All India Station Masters’ Association (AISMA) has urged the authorities to end the delay in providing apron facilities at the Kannur railway station to ensure cleanliness at the railway premises. Railway staff were being exposed to unhygienic conditions at the railway premises, the association said.
A press release issued by the AISMA branch secretary here said that the association would observe September 16 as protest day. Railway staff members here would wear badges as part of the protest on Wednesday.
The press release said that though the issue of health hazards caused by filth on railway yards at the station was brought to the notice of the Railway authorities concerned, no steps were taken to implement the demand for providing the apron with good drainage that would allow an effective cleaning of the yards.
The association highlighted the plight of shunting staff working with their feet and hands drenched in rain water mixed with filth on the yards. The plight of train examination and coach cleaning staff exposed to unhygienic conditions at the station and to diseases is not different, the release added.
