Chennai: On the occasion of Deepavali, Chennai metro rail will be revising the timetable of train services for four days. 
“On October 16 and 17, the metro rail will start at 6 am and extend till 11 pm and on October 19 and 20, the operations will begin at 5 am and end at 10 pm (regular time),” said the official press statement.

‘Regular coaches have enough space’
Two years after the launch of the first service of Chennai Metro Rail, there are barely any takers for the special class coaches on the trains.
The fares for the special class coaches, equipped with red cushions, are twice that of the normal class.
The fares range from ₹10-₹60 for the normal class and ₹20- ₹120 for the special class.
‘Trains not crowded’
Commuters say there is no need to use the special class as the regular coaches themselves are comfortable as the trains are not crowded.
Nirmala Rajagopal, a 30-year-old resident of Anna Nagar, says that while travelling from Anna Nagar Tower station to Little Mount, she pays ₹45 for a regular ticket but always gets a seat. “Where is the need to pay double that price for nothing? I have no clue why they came up this idea,” she adds.
No other Metro Rail system in the country has a special class coach on their trains.
Even Delhi, which recorded a cumulative ridership of one billion as of March this year, does not have a special class.
Chennai Metro Rail has only about 12,000-14,000 people travelling through its three stretches on a daily basis.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials say they do not have a proper estimate of how many use the special class, but admit that not many do.
For the special class, the tokens are in red and the smart cards are gold in colour (as opposed to the blue tokens and regular smart cards for the normal class).
“We carry out surprise checks to see if people buy regular tickets and travel by special class. So far, we haven’t found anyone doing it,” an official says.
Sources with the Chennai Metro Rail project say the special class coaches were introduced anticipating crowds in the future.

Inspired by Kochi Metro Rail, 10 cycles will be available in 7 stations
Drawing inspiration from Kochi Metro Rail, Chennai Metro Rail too plans to give commuters biycles free of cost to ride from next month.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they have tied-up with the Kochi-based Athi’s Bicycle Club that has put up cycles in Kochi Metro Rail. There will be 10 cycles in each of the following stations: CMBT, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, Ekkatuthangal, St. Thomas Mount, Shenoy Nagar and Nehru Park. “We will expand this further to other stations too as the demand improves. We want to encourage commuters to take to cycling and hence, this initiative,” an official said.
M.S. Athirup, a 27-year-old engineer and founder Athi’s Bicycle Club, started cycling as a hobby and eventually made it his profession. He has indulged in 14,000 hours of cycling across the country.
“Commuters just have to send a message to a number with their details to register, then, they have to send another message to another number to take the cycle. This message will give them a number to unlock the cycle. The stands in the stations will not be manned and commuters can take it whenever they want,” he added. Commuters need not leave the cycle in the same station where they took it from; it may be left in any of the above six stations.
Cannot be stolen
“The cycles cannot be stolen because, during registration process, the identification proof is given and contact numbers are verified. We can track anyone if a cycle goes missing,” he said adding that no cycle has gone missing yet. The club has provided cycles to Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi’s Infopark and Kochi Metro Rail.

SBI launches combo Metro cards

SBI launches combo Metro cards

The State Bank of India has launched a combo card for commuters of Chennai Metro Rail that acts as a debit card and a Metro Transit Card. Chairman of SBI Arundhati Bhattacharya inaugurated the service early this week. The Metro transit card acts as an access card at the Metro stations and also as a standard shopping-cum-ATM debit card.

The card is also available in a credit card variant. When the combo card is used at the entry gate, the commuter is allowed inside the station, and when the combo card is used on completion of travel at the exit gate of the destination station, the travel fare will be deducted. SBI Officials said that the combo card can be topped up through the CMRL automated vending machines as well as through ATMs Internet banking, Mobile Banking.
Ms Bhattacharya also inaugurated other new services by the SBI including an e-hundi facility at the Srirangam Temple where devotees will be given printed receipts when they deposit money in specific denominations in the facility available.

CMRL has introduced Group ticketing system with 10% discount. This group ticketing facility has been introduced for commuters who travel in groups from schools, colleges etc.
Store Value Card: The Store value card is same as a smart card with an advantage. It saves a lot of time by not standing in queues for tickets during every journey. The validity of the card starts from the date of the 1st usage. The trip card facility comes with a discount of 20% on the basis of no. of trips. This smart card facility is meant for regular commuters who travel between two fixed stations. A single journey from the originating station to the destination station is a trip. A bundle of trips of 10, 40, 60 can be loaded into the card. A refundable deposit of Rs 50/- is to be made on purchase of the trip card.

Chennai: On Friday, for the first time, an underground section of Chennai Metro Rail is likely to witness a trial run with trains.

The stretch between Thirumangalam ramp and Shenoy Nagar will be electrified on Friday and the officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plan to carry out the trial run on the same day, sources said.

Sometime ago, the Overhead Maintenance Vehicle ran through this stretch.

“We have started work on signalling too in this stretch. The tunnelling and track work got over several months ago. So, we want to check if everything goes well with electrification in this stretch now and carry out trials too,” an official said.

Chennai Metro Rail plans to open to the public the first underground stretch between Thirumangalam ramp and Nehru Park by October.

But the trial run that is likely to happen on Friday will not be done up to Nehru Park as there is quite a bit of work to be completed, sources added.

Also, on the same day, the trial run between Alandur and Chennai airport will be carried out again with an Overhead Maintenance Vehicle. “On Tuesday, we did a trial run in one line (upward). Now, on Friday, we may do it on the other line (downward),” an official said.

Chennai Metro Rail, which is being built at a cost of Rs. 14,600 crore, commenced its first service in the 10-km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur in July last year.

CMRL plans to open the next service between Little Mount and Chennai airport in six months.

CHENNAI:  Come March, you may be able to take the Metro Rail from Koyambedu to Saidapet. Metro rail officials said the 2.75 km stretch between Alandur and Little Mount stations is almost ready and most likely will be operational in March. Currently, the Metro Rail is operational between Koyambedu and Alandur.

Chennai Metro Rail officials also said trial runs on the six-kilometre stretch between Alandur to Chennai Airport would begin next month. The electrification work on this stretch is in its final stages, with this stretch likely to be operational for public commuting earliest by April. “But the focus now is to open the stretch between Alandur to Little Mount. The track work is completed. Signalling work will be completed by March first week and clearance will be sought from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety in Bangalore, who will inspect the stretch,” said a Chennai Metro Rail official.

The opening of the stretch between Alandur to Little Mount will be beneficial for students and staff of Anna University who can avoid traffic during the rush hour and reach the university in less than 30 minutes. Usually, it takes nearly an hour to reach the university from Chennai Metropolitan Bus Terminus. Not only that people living near Saidapet can also use the Metro to reach CMBT to travel out of Chennai in  Omni buses as well as government buses that operate out of CMBT.

Meanwhile, the state government has begun the land acquisition process by notifying land owners and issuing notices through newspapers for Chennai Metro Rail’s extended phase from Washermenpet to Tiruvotiyur - a nine kilometer stretch of which 2.2 km will be underground, while the rest will be elevated. The state government is awaiting the Union government’s clearance for the extended phase. “We will be paying compensation for land acquired as per the new land acquisition act or through Transferrable Development Rights (TDRs),” said a Metro Rail official.

Chennai and Ahmedabad  Metro Projects get Loan assistance worth Rs5,536 from Japan

Japan to provide Rs 5,536 crore loan for metro projects in Chennai and Ahmedabad 

NEW DELHI: India and Japan today exchanged notes for Japan's Official Development Loan Assistance ( ODA) worth Rs 5,536 crore for Chennai and Ahmedabad metro rail projects. 

"India and Japan exchange notes for Japan's Official Development Loan Assistance worth Rs 5,536 crore to India for Chennai Metro Rail Project (IV) and Ahmedabad Metro Project," said an official release. 

The notes were exchanged here between S Selvakumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and Yutaka Kikuta, from the Embassy of Japan to India. 

The Japanese government of Japan has committed Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan of an amount of about Rs 1,080 crore for the Chennai Metro Rail Project (IV phase) and Rs 4,456 crore for Ahmedabad Metro Project. 

India and Japan have had mutually beneficial economic development cooperation since 1958. 

In the last few years, the economic cooperation between India and Japan has strengthened and grown into strategic partnership. 

With general political consensus and popular support for the greater cooperation between India and Japan, the partnership is poised for a great future, said the release.
