CMRL mulls Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam Rail Line proposals
CHENNAI: The first phase extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, where the new bus terminus is proposed, is likely to be a 16 km stretch along the GST road, according to Chennai Metro Rail sources. This comes after Larsen and Toubro is preparing the Feasibility Study Report for Chennai Metro Corridor 1 Extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminal.
Sources privy to the project said that as per the inception report, Larsen and Toubro was looking at three different routes from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam bus terminus.These include a 16km stretch along GST road, 19km stretch from GST Road till Tambaram and Mudichur Road afterwards and 20km stretch that passes from Airport-Cantonment-Pallavaram Bus Stand GST Road via Hastinapuram and Tambaram West Mudichur Road to Kilambakkam.
It is learnt that officials are favouring the first option, that is the 16km stretch along GST Road. This alignment follows the GST Road and will be fully elevated. The consultant has suggested alignment along the centre of the road if Right of Way permits along the first level and if there are existing structures then it will be along the second level. The stations will be planned integrating with Railways and Metropolitan Transport Corporation and utilizing their lands.
Sources indicated that a total of 13 stations are being proposed at a distance of 1.2km a station. Currently, there are seven suburban railway stations on this stretch. The option to have Metro rail along the GST road was preferred as the land acquisition and distance is minimal. The land acquisition required for the project will be defence lands after the airport, private lands where commercial establishments are located near Pallavaram, and near Perungulathur where elliptical road over bridge is being constructed by railways and National Highway Authority of India and private lands near Outer Ring road.
The flip side is that the metro rail will run parallel to the suburban rail network which could hit the ridership. Similarly, after Perungalathur there is no settlement on the left hand side. The biggest challenge will be the corridor will have to be taken to second level due to existing structures and proposals for elevated Expressway from Tambaram to Chengalpet. But what made this option successful is the multimodal integration with public transport besides connecting all major traffic generators.
The second option along GST Road till Tambaram and later from Mudichur Road to Kilambakkam, which increases the mass transit network coverage in the south west suburban parts of Chennai, faces challenge as there is no major traffic generator in Mudichur Road and the right of way in the road is inadequate.  The option which starts from airport via Pallavaram, Hasthinapuram, Chitalapakkam, Selaiyur, Tambaram and Tambaram West to Perangulathur, is a 20km stretch where the land acquisition will be maximum. The positive side is that it passes through highly dense residential area, sources added.

Chennai: Come Wednesday, Chennai Metro rail services to the Airport will most likely be rolled out for public. “Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Union minster Venkaiah Naidu will most likely inaugurate the new section of the Metro line via video conferencing on September 21. The confirmation will likely come on Monday,” a senior official of the Chennai Metro told Deccan Chronicle.


The 9-kilometer long stretch connecting Little Mount to Airport via Guindy will also provide a direct ride between city’s famous bus transport hub CMBT and the city airport.

“The line was already fit to be open for operations but was incessantly delayed. Now that the dates are near, it will benefit commuters,” an official added. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) of Southern Region inspected the stretch in the last week of July and gave his nod, and asked for a few changes after inspection. Amid speculations of the line being thrown open for public being rife, a number of test rides and checks have been taking place on the stretch in the past few weeks. The 9-km corridor is part of the Airport-Washermenpet corridor, which has now to be extended up to Thiruvottiyur.

Chennai Metro Rail News : Safety audit for next section of Metro Rail in three months

Chennai: Chennai Metro Rail plans to seek permission for the official safety audit clearance for the next service from Little Mount to Chennai Airport in three months.

Before throwing open any stretch for public use, Chennai Metro Rail must get a clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

They will visit the stations, take a ride in the train through the stretch and inspect various aspects before issuing a certificate of approval for beginning the commercial service.

According to sources, the CMRS may be invited in about three months for inspection of the stations from Little Mount to Chennai Airport and St. Thomas Mount.

“Only after they give clearance can we pick a date for commencing the services in the next stretch,” a source said.

This mandatory process of CMRS inspection and certification was carried out before the first service of Chennai Metro Rail from Koyambedu to Alandur was open to public.

Chennai Metro Rail had its first service launched only in June last year though the official deadline of the entire project was 2015.

There was a delay due to contractors making tardy progress and their subsequent termination.

For instance, Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited (CCCL), which was in charge of constructing stations from Koyambedu and Alandur, had failed to keep up with deadlines and its contract was terminated.

Then, retendering work started and a fresh contract was awarded. Now, tickets are priced between Rs. 10 and Rs. 40 and nine trains are running on this stretch.

CHENNAI:  Come March, you may be able to take the Metro Rail from Koyambedu to Saidapet. Metro rail officials said the 2.75 km stretch between Alandur and Little Mount stations is almost ready and most likely will be operational in March. Currently, the Metro Rail is operational between Koyambedu and Alandur.

Chennai Metro Rail officials also said trial runs on the six-kilometre stretch between Alandur to Chennai Airport would begin next month. The electrification work on this stretch is in its final stages, with this stretch likely to be operational for public commuting earliest by April. “But the focus now is to open the stretch between Alandur to Little Mount. The track work is completed. Signalling work will be completed by March first week and clearance will be sought from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety in Bangalore, who will inspect the stretch,” said a Chennai Metro Rail official.

The opening of the stretch between Alandur to Little Mount will be beneficial for students and staff of Anna University who can avoid traffic during the rush hour and reach the university in less than 30 minutes. Usually, it takes nearly an hour to reach the university from Chennai Metropolitan Bus Terminus. Not only that people living near Saidapet can also use the Metro to reach CMBT to travel out of Chennai in  Omni buses as well as government buses that operate out of CMBT.

Meanwhile, the state government has begun the land acquisition process by notifying land owners and issuing notices through newspapers for Chennai Metro Rail’s extended phase from Washermenpet to Tiruvotiyur - a nine kilometer stretch of which 2.2 km will be underground, while the rest will be elevated. The state government is awaiting the Union government’s clearance for the extended phase. “We will be paying compensation for land acquired as per the new land acquisition act or through Transferrable Development Rights (TDRs),” said a Metro Rail official.

Work on Chennai Airport-Meenambakkam Metro Rail stations has also started

Chennai: A few months after the first stretch of Chennai Metro Rail from Koyambedu to Alandur was commissioned, the trial run for the next stretch is all set to start soon.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), work is in progress to start trial run from Officers’ Training Academy to Little Mount Metro Rail stations by the end of September or early October. “The track work from Alandur station to St. Thomas Mount station and from Little Mount station to Officers’ Training Academy station is complete. The electrification for this stretch will also be done in the coming weeks,” an official said.

The officials have also started track work from Chennai Airport to Meenambakkam Metro Rail stations.

The trial run will go on for at least 6-8 months before launching services on this stretch. Simultaneously, construction of stations along the stretches has been in progress.

The State government had announced sometime back that the stretch between Chennai airport and Little Mount would be launched in March 2016.

The first stretch of Chennai Metro Rail between Koyambedu and Alandur (10 km) was thrown open to public in the last week of June.

Metro rail station work at Chennai airport completed

Chennai (MAS): The structural work on the metro rail station at the Chennai airport, the second in the country after New Delhi to have such connectivity, has been completed, and now the interior work is on, according to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

“We are now focussing on the installation of false ceiling and plastering, electrical and plumbing work. The sheeting work for the roof is in progress. The installation of lifts and escalators will begin soon,” said an official of the CMRL.

In the Chennai Metro Rail, built at a cost of Rs.14600 crore, the airport is the last station of corridor-II, which links the 23-km stretch from Washermanpet to the airport. Corridor-I is a 22-km stretch between the Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount.

The station at the airport comprises a five-level terminal sprawling over 17,300 sq. m, and is built in such a way that it provides a link for commuters to new terminals of the airport. Similar to the one in New Delhi, there will be a check-in facility at the Chennai Central metro rail station for passengers to complete the procedures and board a train to the airport.
