Chennai: Come Wednesday, Chennai Metro rail services to the Airport will most likely be rolled out for public. “Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Union minster Venkaiah Naidu will most likely inaugurate the new section of the Metro line via video conferencing on September 21. The confirmation will likely come on Monday,” a senior official of the Chennai Metro told Deccan Chronicle.


The 9-kilometer long stretch connecting Little Mount to Airport via Guindy will also provide a direct ride between city’s famous bus transport hub CMBT and the city airport.

“The line was already fit to be open for operations but was incessantly delayed. Now that the dates are near, it will benefit commuters,” an official added. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) of Southern Region inspected the stretch in the last week of July and gave his nod, and asked for a few changes after inspection. Amid speculations of the line being thrown open for public being rife, a number of test rides and checks have been taking place on the stretch in the past few weeks. The 9-km corridor is part of the Airport-Washermenpet corridor, which has now to be extended up to Thiruvottiyur.

World Class Central Square near Chennai Central Railway Station - Chief minister J.Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: You might have heard about Times Square in New York and Trafalgar Square in central London. What about such a square in Chennai? The Tamil Nadu government is proposing to develop a Rs 400-crore 'Central Square' near Chennai Central railway station, where various forms of rail transport -- long distance, suburban, Mass Rapid Transport System and the under construction Metro Rail -- are converging.

"I am happy to announce that the areas around Ripon Buildings, suburban railway terminal, Chennai Central railway station, Victoria Hall, government hospital, MRTS station and others will be developed as a world-class Central Square," chief minister J Jayalalithaa said in the assembly on Tuesday.

"This is a key commercial area, and the locality houses the Government General Hospital, Southern Railway headquarters and Corporation of Chennai headquarters," she said.

The government would set up facilities, including parking lots and pavement for pedestrians, with funding from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to ensure seamless traffic at the proposed square, she said.

The estimated funding for this purpose would be financed by Chennai Metro Rail, she added.

Woman Cop appointed as Chief Security Officer of Chennai Metro Rail

Chennai: Senior Superintendent of police K Bhavaneeshwari has been appointed chief security officer (CSO) of Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL), a newly created post.

After the Koyambedu- Alandur metro rail line was inaugurated by chief minister J Jayalalithaa on June 29, director general of police Ashok Kumar, state intelligence chief P Kannappan and city police commissioner S George discussed security arrangements at the metro stations.

Sources said Bhavaneeshwari, now SP, ‘Q’ branch, has been deputed to the new post. She will assist CMRL officials in cooperation with the city and state police. She will be paid by CMRL and will be responsible for setting up a team and deciding the roles of its members.

“She will be in charge of providing safety and security to the assets of the metro rail. She will also carry out anti-terror drills and anti-sabotage checks,” a police officer said.

Bhavaneeshwari will be responsible for maintaining law and order and tackling crime on metro rail property, including at work sites. Two private agencies currently handle security at metro rail stations and are monitored by a retired superintendent of police.

The 10-km stretch Koyambedu-Alandur metro rail line has seven stations and there will 32 stations along two corridors when the entire network becomes operational.

Once completed, there could be five to six metro rail police stations for the network, each with six to seven metro rail stations under its control.

With a Woman behind Controls, Chennai Metro Rail makes Maiden Journey

Chennai (MAS): It was 12.02 pm on Monday and barely moments remained before Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was to flag off the city’s first Metro train service from Alandur to Koyambedu.

Up on platform two, where the train that would make the first journey lay wait, there was an unusual crowd near the motorman’s cabin. Something curious had caught the eyes of the onlookers. As this scribe took a closer look, it became known that the people were peeking in to see how the control room looked like. But more than that, they were interested in the person who was going to be operating those controls, once the green signal from Secretariat came.

A young woman was behind the wheel today when the Chennai Metro rolled out for the first time on a signal from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

At 12.16 pm, 27-year-old A Preethi, wrote her name into the city’s modern history when she operated the first Metro train service. “In the morning before she left for work, she told me how happy and excited she was to be given this opportunity. But she was not nervous. She kept telling that it was no big achievement,” said Preethi’s mother, A Shanti.

Preethi’s mother and her four-year-old niece were a part of the journey, taking in the experience, as the rakes whizzed out of Alandur amid huge applause from the occupants, and sped into Ekkattuthangal station. “Since her childhood, she had always shown a keen interest in driving vehicles. Be it a two-wheeler or four-wheeler, she has driven it all and now she is operating a train,” said the proud mother.

As early as 9 am, Alandur station was abuzz with activity as camera crews had begun to make their presence felt. By noon, a sizeable crowd – majority of them AIADMK party workers – had arrived to make the inaugural run successful.

Since the first passenger service was only scheduled at 1.30 pm, members of the public who had luckily gained entry by then were busy clicking selfies and taking group shots. Wide open smiles adorned every single one of their faces because those images were going to go up on Facebook, Instagram and other social networking sites.

Curiosity was sky high. People could hardly resist taking a peek into the air-conditioned rakes just to get a feel and touch of it before the initial run. As soon as the service doors opened, people swarmed in to take their seats and in the blink of an eye, the train was at full capacity and the city on the cusp of realising a major achievement.

Chennai (MAS): The first phase of the much anticipated multi-crore Metro Rail chugged into Chennai on Monday, with Chief Minister JJayalalithaa flagging off the inaugural service steered by a woman driver.

ayalalithaa launched the services on the Alandur-Koyambedu sector by flagging it off from the state secretariat through live video, throwing open to the public a mass rapid transport system.

The route dedicated to the public is an elevated structure covering a distance of 10.15 km, consisting of Alandur, Ekkathuthangal, Ashok Nagar, Vadapalani, Arumbakkam and Koyambedu Railway stations besides the yard at the last stop, a state government release here said.

The route of the train has been mainly on the busy 100 ft road and would cater to lakhs of commuters when fully completed.

The first train having four coaches, which left at 12.15 PM from Alandur to Koyambedu was driven by A Preethi, a 28- year-old diploma holder in engineering from Government Dharmambal Polytechnic College here.

The flower decked sprawling and swanky Alandur metro station, the biggest in Chennai, was brimming with activity, with enthusiastic passengers eager to board the first train.

“I wanted to board the first metro train, I hope metro makes travel easier and a pleasure,” said K Ramesh a young executive.

The 45 km Metro Rail project is estimated to cost Rs 14,600 crore and would cover two routes– the 23.085 km Wannarapet to Airport section– and the 21.961 km stretch from Chennai Central to St.Thomas Mount.

Of the total expenditure, Centre’s contribution is 15 percent as share capital and five percent as loans, while that of the Tamil Nadu government is at 15 percent in share capital and 5.78 percent as loans, the release said, adding the state has released its entire share of funds.

The rest 59.22 percent has been sourced as loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the release said.

A sum of Rs 1143.31 crore had been spent on the scheme between 2007-08 and 2010-11 and an additional Rs 9608.63 crore from that year till date, it said adding a total sum of Rs 10,751.94 crore was the expenditure since work commenced on the Metro rail activity.

Chennai Metro Rail flagged off tomorrow

Chennai (MAS): Chennai Metro Rail is all set to commence operations in the next few days. Officials are hopeful this will increase usage of public transportation ‘substantially’ and will reduce the commuters time.

Last week Parliamentary Affairs and Union Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu told reporters in Chennai that first phase of project is ready and that once the electoral code of conduct is over, it will be inaugurated. He was referring to R K Puram by-election, in which Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa is contesting, which is scheduled for June 27.

According to earlier reports, initial plans were that the first stretch of 10 kilometres will be opened by December, 2013, which was delayed due to various reasons.

On Monday, authorities have showcased the Operations Control Centre, installed by Siemens. This nerve centre will be controlling the entire rail movement, including speed of the trains, while the driver’s role would be to start the train and to open and close the doors of the coaches.

Human intervention will be very less, unless there is an emergency, said Chennai Metro officials.

While the total length of the Phase I of the project is 45 kms, Washermenpet to Airport 23.1 kms and Chennai Central to St.Thomas Mount 22 kms, initially nine trains will be deployed for operations from Koyambedu to Alandur covering a distance of 10 kms. Each train can carry 1,276 passengers, including 176 sitting and 1,100 standing. Minimum fare will be in the range of Rs 10 to around Rs 30-40.

The project is expected to reduce commuting time by 75 per cent from one end of the city to another. Currently the average bus speed in the city is around 17-18 kms per hour and this is expected to come down further to 12 kms per hour, on the other side average speed of the Metro train will be around 35 kmph.

Take for instance, from Koyambedu it will take 17 minutes to reach St Thomas Mount, a distance of 10.1 km, with the train stopping at each station for 30 seconds, while by road it would take around 30-45 minutes depending upon the traffic conditions. There will be six stations in the Metro line between Koyambedu and St Thomas Mount.

Work in the 27-hectare Koyambedu depot is completed and it is controlled by a separate centre — Depot Control Centre. For the first time in India, the depot has ballast-less (small gravels) track.

The depot has a total track length of 14,314 metres. There are 12 stabling lines or storage lines. Each line is 300 metre long, and can accommodate 36 trains of four cars and 24 trains of six cars. In future, space is available to construct one more stabling shed to accommodate 45 trains of four cars or 30 trains of six cars with 15 additional lines, he said.

The first few coaches manufactured by Alstom were imported from the company’s plant in Brazil. Subsequently, the coaches were manufactured at Sri City Andhra Pradesh. In the first lot, a total of 42 trains will be supplied to the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL). Of this, 25 train sets have so far arrived at the CMRL depot.

Phase II of the project

It was estimated, the phase II of Chennai Metro Rail Project would cost around Rs 36,000 crore. The Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has zeroed in three corridors for the phase II development, according to senior official from CMRL.

Already a presentation was made to the Government for the phase II, which will run for around 60 kms with three co-corridors. The entire stretch in the Phase II would be underground.

Chennai bypoll likely to delay Metro Rail inauguration

Chennai (MAS): The first phase of the much-awaited Chennai metro rail (CMRL) connecting Koyambedu and St Thomas Mount will be completed by next month as more than 95 per cent of the work is complete, a top CMRL official told DC. However, top brass of the CMRL are unwilling to put a date for the inaugural of the prestigious project as clearances from the railway board and the commissioner of railway safety is pending.

The issue is also complicated as the state has to give its consensus for the inaugural. With the Radha Krishnan Nagar Assembly constituency in north Chennai going to bypolls on June 27, the model code of conduct has come into force in Chennai.

Central beautification: Meanwhile, the CMRL, which had proposed to beautify the Chennai Central railway station premises with new escalators, landscape and arriving points, has finalised a detailed project report at an estimate of Rs 400 crore. After examining this, the Southern Railway will issue a no-objection certificate and will render its expertise and co-ordination wherever required, Southern Railway general manager Ashok K. Agarwal said.

Mambalam, Tiruvanmiyur get railway police stations

Chennai (MAS): Railway police stations at Mambalam and Thiruvanmiyur railway station and an economic offence wing office in Guindy industrial estate are among the new facilities and building worth over Rs.544 crore added to the police department by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday when she inaugurated it through video conferencing.

The CM also announced Rs.3 lakh each as solatium to family members of seven police personnel who died recently. A state government press release said that Jayalalithaa inaugurated 226 police quarters constructed at a cost of Rs 20.65 crore in Madurai. She also inaugurated police quarters costing Rs.423.50 crore, buildings for the department, police stations, fire and rescue services officials quarters, forensic lab in Tanjavur. Jayalalithaa also flagged off 52 jeeps for Chennai city police and 12 all terrain vehicles for the coastal security group.
