Ahmedabad Metro Trial Runs Conducted on January 31,2019

Ahmedabad, Metro Rail News: Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) conducted the first trial run of the Ahmedabad metro rail was conducted on January 31, 2019, Which announced that its commercial operations will start from March this year.
The government plans to start from March operations of the metro rail on 6.5-km route, which is a part of the first phase from Vastral in the city to Apparel Park.
“The first test of the train was successfully carried out today on the test track of 900 meters at Apparel Park,” a statement by GMRC said.
 “The first train-set of Ahmedabad Metro had arrived at Apparel Park Depot on January 1, 2019 and was undergoing technical examination, safety checks and tests required for the regular run of the train,” the statement said.

JICA extends Rs.4,870 Crore Loan for Ahmedabad Metro Rail project

Ahmedabad: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) today inked a pact with the Centre to provide 82.434 billion yen (about ₹4,870 crore) assistance for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project.

With this pact, the cumulative loan amount provided by JICA for metro projects in India (including Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai Metro’s) has exceeded 1 trillion yen (approximately ₹59,071 crore).

“JICA today signed an agreement with the Government of India to provide 82.434 billion Japanese Yen Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan for the development of the metro rail system in Ahmedabad, Gujarat,” a JICA statement said.

It said the ODA loan’s conditions are very concessional, 1.4 per cent of interest rate and 30 years of repayment period (including 10 years grace period).

The assistance from JICA will facilitate construction of underground and elevated rail tracks, electrical, telecom and signalling systems and procurement of the trains, it said.

India is JICA’s largest partner in the world.

The latest agreement was signed between Takema Sakamoto, Chief Representative, JICA India Office and S Selvakumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.

“The project will provide the 1st Metro Rail System network of approx 38 km in Ahmedabad from Motera Stadium to APMC (North-South Corridor) and Thaltej to Vastral Gaam (East-West Corridor),” the statement said.

It will cover the central business district area, academic area, residential area and institutional complex area of Ahmedabad Metropolitan Area. Development of metro in Ahmedabad will be a typical example of high quality infrastructure, it added.

The Executing agency for the project is Metro Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad Company Ltd (MEGA). The complete commercial operation is expected to start from 2020.

JICA India Chief representative Sakamoto said: “Ahmedabad is the fifth most populated city in India. This loan will help develop mass rapid transit system in the Ahmedabad metropolitan area.

“This project will meet the growing traffic demands, leading to modal shift from road traffic to public transportation system and will eventually lead to balanced regional development and improvement of environmental conditions,” he said.

The technology being implemented for metro will include the advanced singling system, Communication Based Train Control (CBTC), in order to achieve high level of safety enforcement and reliability of the Project.

Ahmedabad: The first metro rail in Ahmedabad will roll before October 2017 on the six-km long inaugural stretch of VastralgamApparel Park. The Metro-link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) has already dug 304 piles and 20 out of 76 pillars have already come up. The second stretch, that will be made operational by 2019, will be the 20-km long APMC-Motera stretch.

Another major development is that the old high court premises off Ashram Road will be turned into the main elevated interchange junction on two levels for North-South and East-West corridor of the metro rail – much like Connaught place metro station in New Delhi.

While East-West corridor will be 11 metre high, the North-South corridor will reach a height of 17 metre at this intersection.

“On the North-South corridor, the metro will run on an elevated platform right above the regional railway line running between Vijaynagar-Usmanpura-Gandhig ram till Rajivnagar.From there, it will take a sharp turn towards Jivraj,” says MEGA MD I P Gautam.He adds, “After Jivraj, we are constructing a special underpass at Parimal which will take at least three years to complete, because of its design,” Gautam added.

However, the frantic pace at which the metro construction is going on has also tossed up engineering challenges for MEGA. In the EastWest corridor, the 17-metre high elevated corridor gradually slopes down to a height of 10 metre till Kalupur station. Just before Kalupur, the metro takes a sharp `S’ turn to avoid ASI protected monuments.

Another major challenge for MEGA engineers is that they have hit a water table at just 22 metre depth, while trying to construct an underground station near Gheekanta on Relief Road. This will be come up at the Old Collectorate premises.

“We are planning a 200-metre long underground tunnel to link Gandhi Road to the Gheekanta station. Nearly 30,000 people come here daily, and the tunnel will provide an easy access to Gheekanta station. We will even acquire some land from RC Technical High School to provide easy access to this station,” says Gautam.

Chennai and Ahmedabad  Metro Projects get Loan assistance worth Rs5,536 from Japan

Japan to provide Rs 5,536 crore loan for metro projects in Chennai and Ahmedabad 

NEW DELHI: India and Japan today exchanged notes for Japan's Official Development Loan Assistance ( ODA) worth Rs 5,536 crore for Chennai and Ahmedabad metro rail projects. 

"India and Japan exchange notes for Japan's Official Development Loan Assistance worth Rs 5,536 crore to India for Chennai Metro Rail Project (IV) and Ahmedabad Metro Project," said an official release. 

The notes were exchanged here between S Selvakumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and Yutaka Kikuta, from the Embassy of Japan to India. 

The Japanese government of Japan has committed Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan of an amount of about Rs 1,080 crore for the Chennai Metro Rail Project (IV phase) and Rs 4,456 crore for Ahmedabad Metro Project. 

India and Japan have had mutually beneficial economic development cooperation since 1958. 

In the last few years, the economic cooperation between India and Japan has strengthened and grown into strategic partnership. 

With general political consensus and popular support for the greater cooperation between India and Japan, the partnership is poised for a great future, said the release.

French firm Systra-led Consortium roped in for Ahmedabad Metro project

The metro train project is being executed by Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad Co. Ltd. The decision was taken in the Project Committee meeting of the company held on 31st August in New Delhi and LoA was issued to the consortium on 4th September, the company said in a statement on Monday.

Ahmedabad: French mass transit and rail engineering company Systra SA-led consortium has been roped in as the general engineering consultant (GEC) for the first phase of the Ahmedabad metro rail project.

The metro train project is being executed by Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) Co. Ltd, a 50:50 special purpose vehicle formed by Govt. of India and Govt. of Gujarat.

The project has faced many delays in the past due to several reasons including alleged financial irregularities by some company officials. A detailed project report (DPR) prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 2004 had projected that the metro rail would be ready by 2010 to commute over 6lakh passengers daily.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be about Rs.9,000 crore. Daily ridership on the Ahmedabad metro rail network in 2021 is expected to be 460,000 passengers and the average trip length is expected to be 6.68 km at that time.

This decision was taken in the Project Committee meeting of the company held on 31st August in New Delhi and LoA was issued to the consortium on 4th September, the company said in a statement on Monday.

The consortium also includes RITES Ltd from India, Oriental Consultants Global Co. Ltd from Japan and AECOM Asia Co. Ltd from Hong Kong as members.
