Soon, tablets for passengers to record feedback on meals on trains

Soon, tablets for passengers to record feedback on meals on trains
Passengers can record their feedback through an online form on the tablets to be provided by the Railways
Good, bad or ugly — passengers on premium trains will soon be able to rate on tablets the food they eat under a scheme to be launched soon, a senior official said today.
They can record their feedback through an online form on the tablets to be provided by the Railways, the official said.

Around 100 tablets have so far been given by the Railways to on-board supervisors of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in different railway zones for recording customer feedback on food quality, staff behaviour and other related issues, the official said.
The tablet was used on a trial basis for the first time on the Ahmedabad-Delhi Rajdhani yesterday. The system would be formally launched on the Mumbai Rajdhani in a couple of weeks, IRCTC chief spokesperson Pinakin Morawala said.
"This will help us be more specific with the redress of complaints and suggestions. We will be able to gauge the rate of customer satisfaction as well as grade the suggestions," he said.
The Railways is also looking at an offline version of the scheme to deal with erratic networks or Internet problems.
The software on the tablet records the name, phone number and train details of the passenger. Then it poses a series of questions to determine the food experience on the journey.
Currently, IRCTC takes feedback either on an on-board suggestion book, or through its twitter handle. Passengers can also call 139 to complain about the quality of food.
These methods will continue to be available along with the new system, Morawala said.
In the new system, passengers would be asked to rate different aspects of the food being served — on quality, quantity, presentation, staff behaviour and overall satisfaction — on a scale of 1-5.
If the rating is three or less on any count, the passenger is asked further questions on specific problem areas — taste, appearance and others.
"As of now, we are targeting 10 per cent of passengers in a train for feedback. Eventually, we might increase our target," said Morawala.
The feedback forms have a separate box where passengers can recount their individual experiences and details not captured by the set queries.
Once recorded, passengers will get a message on their mobile phones, thanking them for the feedback and checking if the information provided to the Railways is genuine. This would ensure that the feedback is not being manipulated.
IRCTC as of now has 40 trains under it and initially, this feedback system will be introduced in the premium trains — Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi — that they operate.

High-speed trains to link metros by 2019

High-speed trains to link metros by 2019

New Delhi : The Indian Railways have identified 11 corridors for running the trains at a “semi-high speed” of 160 km per hour by 2019 and sought sanction of Rs 22,000 crore from the finance ministry in the upcoming union budget. The average speed of the high profile trains like Rajdhani is at present 88 to 90 km per hour.

The project envisages improvement of the rail tracks between Mumbai and Delhi, between Mumbai and Goa, Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Delhi-Kolkata, Nagpur-Hyderabad, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Chennai-Hyderabad, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kanpur and Delhi-Agra. The Railways have already started a feasibility study to push for high speed on these routes, though not attaining the high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to run the train at 200 km per hour.

The Railway Ministry sources said the first two tracks to be developed for speeding up the trains’ speed are between Delhi and Mumbai and Delhi and Kolkata. It will enable completion of the journey between Delhi and Mumbai in just 11 hours straight. Presently, the Mumbai Rajdhani takes 16 hours to cover a distance of 1400 km at an average speed of 88 km per hour. At present, only the Gatiman Express moves at a speed of 160 km per hour covering the distance of 188 km between Delhi (Nizamuddin) and Agra in one hour 40 minutes.

Railways to issue Tender for Vinyl-wrap Advertisements on Premier Trains to spur revenue

Railways to issue Tender for Vinyl-wrap Advertisements on Premier Trains to spur revenue
New Delhi: Ad-wrapped trains might soon replace the trademark red bogies of Rajdhanis with Indian Railways ready to issue tender for vinyl wrapping of premier trains to start with. Seen as one of the source of revenue, railways will allow advertisers to buy space on outer areas of trains for advertising.

Initially, railway is offering selected Rajdhani trains originating from Delhi for vinyl wrapping. Delhi-Mumbai Central Rajdhani and August Kranti Rajdhani from Nizamuddin to Mumbai central are two trains where tender for vinyl wrapping are expected soon. Next in line are Shatabdis running in Northern Railways.

Railways plans to offer vinyl wrapping option on all trains in future as according to a study by RITES, a Mini Ratna Central Public Service Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, advertising on trains has a good potential to increase railways revenue manifold.

“Vinyl wrapping will also save the cost of painting of coaches and easy to maintain. The added advantage is it will catch eyeballs and industry will get a captive audience. We are trying to use all available railways resources to increase revenues. The idea is that railways income should not be solely dependent on freight and passenger fare,” said a senior railway officer.

There have been examples in the past where vinyl wrapping has been done on trains but Indian Railways is now planning to take it in a big way and has plans to wrap over 10,000 trains. RITES in a study has found that railways has potential to earn Rs 10,000 crore a year just by selling space for advertising in coaches, wagons and stations among others. But, Railway feel that the analysis is very conservative and actual revenues from these sources could be much higher.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his budget speech has focused on exploring non fare revenues for improving ailing railways.  A non fare revenue directorate has been created in the Railway Board with a mandate for enhancing revenues by 10 percent to 20 percent from non-tariff sources.

The non-fare revenue directorate would look into areas like advertising at stations, commercial exploitation of vacant land and space rights over station buildings, advertising on coaches, monetization of soft assets, including generation of revenue from websites through advertisements, operation of pay and use toilets in land outside railway stations interactive services in railway premises and tourism.

Railway has huge potential to use its space for advertising as it runs 13000 trains per day on 63,000 kilometer of track and carries 23 million passengers – equivalent to population of Australia.
