Railways to scrap Half-fare Tickets for kids from April 22

Railways to scrap Half-fare Tickets for kids from April 22

New Delhi: Children travelling with half-fare train tickets will not be allotted reserved berths starting April 22 as the Indian Railways reportedly decided to boost the state-run transporter’s revenue. At present, children in the age group of five years to 12 years are allotted separate seats at half the adult fare.

After the new scheme is implemented, parents will have to either pay full fare and get reserved berths for their children or share their berths with them. The Indian Railways had taken the decision to do away with the existing half-fare system for children in December last year.

By scrapping reservation system on half-fare ticket, the Indian Railways would have around 20 million berths in a year to allot it to other passengers, in addition to boosting its revenue by approximately Rs 550 crore, the Mint reported.

“We took this cue from air travel, where the kids are charged for the full ticket and avail a seat. Our estimates show that around 21-22 million kids travel on half-ticket annually in our trains and they avail the seat/berth, a rule which has been going on for decades,” a railway official, who did not wish to be named, said.

The decision is expected to affect the middle class families in India, says Madurai Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee member V Manoharan.

“A section of middle class passengers will think twice if they want to take their children with them on a train. For a Chennai-Madurai journey, a person with two kids will have to spend Rs.600 more in sleeper class. The increase in expenditure will be a burden for them,” he said.

Questioning the Indian Railways for charging full fare for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets, Manoharan said: “If allotting a berth for a kid can attract full fare, then the Railways should also refund the 50 per cent of the charges for RAC travellers.”

Kanyakumari District Railway Users’ Association Secretary P Edward Jeni appreciated the move, but suggested that parents who will be sharing berths with their children should be given lower berths as upper and middle ones can be risky or cause inconvenience.

“Most times, children below 10 sleep with either of the parent because of which the berths booked for them remain vacant. Considering the huge demand for reserved berths, it is not a bad idea to regularise berth allocation for kids,” the NIE quoted Jeni as saying.
The half-fare ticket system will remain unchanged for unreserved class and there will also be no changes in the system for children below five years who travel ticket-free and without reserved seats.

An app to tell your train ticket status

An app to tell your train ticket status

PANAJI: Come Diwali or Christmas holidays and thousands of Goans in Bangalore and Mumbai begin to fret as they plan their trip home. With thousands of tourists traveling to Goa for the holiday, 60% of them by rail, it is nigh impossible to get tickets.

Booking a railway ticket during this time through IRCTC is nothing short of excruciating which only worsens when the end result is a waitlisted ticket. Till date, all one could do was pray for a confirmed ticket or opt for the more expensive tatkal service, which is equally dicey. Until, three upstarts in their 20s thought differently.

In 2012, while working at IBM, Dinesh Kumar Kotha and Sripad Vaidya decided to employ their data analytic skills to design an algorithm that could predict whether a waitlisted ticket could get confirmed. After testing over two lakh tickets and getting a 75% success rate, Confirmtkt was born. Realizing that they were on to something significant, the two quit their jobs and decided to better Confirmtkt.

In July 2014, they launched the Confirmtkt (app bit.ly/1O7UIxq) which not only notified users when a ticket gets confirmed but also lets users check their PNR status. Till date, the app which is available for Android and Windows smartphones has been downloaded by 3 lakh users across the country. It has processed 5.64 crore ticket queries and predicted 1.41 crore tickets with an impressive 98% success rate, said Kotha who hails from Telangana.

Keen to continue growing, the duo took in Ponda-lad Pranav Chimulkar as part of the core team.

"We were not happy with the 98% so we went ahead and enabled machine learning. The software now learns from those mistakes where the prediction was wrong," Chimulkar said.

The guys at Confirmtkt went one step further. "When a direct ticket is unavailable and the chances of getting a ticket confirmed are slim, we suggest breaking up the journey," Vaidya said.

Despite tickets being unavailable, railway statistics indicate that nearly 57% of tickets available go unutilized. "There are several ticket quotas. By breaking the journey, the user only has to change the seat or coach and not the train," Vaidya added.

ConfirmTkt has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Pravin Agarwala among other angels.

When do I need to know my PNR status?

What does “PNR number” mean?

PNR stands for “passenger name record” and it tells you your current status on the WL (waitlist) or RAC (reservation against cancellation queue). If you buy a WL ticket or an RAC ticket, you will be assigned a unique 10-digit PNR number .

PNR status and railway reservations explained step by step …
WL and RAC
When all available seats on a train are sold, the railway ( Indian Railway or IRCTC ) releases RACs for railway reservations. Once all of those are sold, WL tickets are released. On almost every train, tickets are canceled for a variety of reasons. These cancellations can get you on the train if you bought an RAC or WL ticket. When the reservation chart of a particular train is ready (usually meaning that the train is due to depart in a few hours) and there are still some available tickets in different quotas, those will be given to RAC/WL ticket holders.passenger details on Indian

Railways ticketseat class of the Indian Railways ticket

Here is an example of a railway reservation situation. Tickets are sold in the following order:
1.    Available 02
2.    Available 01
3.    RAC 01
4.    RAC 02
5.    RAC 03
6.    RAC 04
7.    WL 01
8.    WL 02
Understanding your ticket and WL number of PNR status
On your ticket, there are two numbers. They tell you the position at which you joined the waitlist and your current position – in this order. Here is an example:
You are booking a ticket online (Indian Railway, IRCTC, etc…). You find the train and class/seat/berth that you want along with the date and time. At the end of the reservation, you buy a ticket with WL5/WL2.
In this example you joined the WL at position 5, but by the time you actually bought the ticket online you moved to position 2 (due either to a cancellation or to someone not making a final booking). The first number will stay the same – it indicates when you JOINED the queue. The second number will decrease until you get a ticket (hopefully).
Your railway reservation could look like:
·         WL 5/WL 2 (this is your starting position)
·         WL 5/WL 1
·         WL 5/RAC 3
·         WL 5/RAC 2
·         WL 5/RAC 1
·         WL 5/CNF
WL 5/WL 2 = Waitlist ticket: you cannot board the train.
WL 5/RAC 3 = RAC ticket: you are allowed to board the train, but you may end up on a seat instead of a berth.
WL 5/CNF = Confirmed ticket: you can board the train and you have a berth to yourself.
WL and RAC refunds
If your train is ready for departure and its reservation chart is finalized, the cost of your WL ticket will be automatically refunded to your bank account.
NOTE: There can be significant movement on the waitlist on the very last day, so you may get an RAC status at the last minute. In such a case, you will not get a refund, as an RAC is actually a boarding ticket.
