Students permitted to travel in Chennai Suburban Network

In view of popular demand, Students will be permitted to travel in Chennai Suburban train services effective from 15th February, 2021.  Students, both male and female, will be allowed to travel throughout the day including peak hours in Chennai suburban trains. 

Students are required to carry valid Photo Identity Card issued by their educational institution and produce the same at ticket booking counters while purchasing tickets or passes.  The ID card should also be produced along with ticket/pass during journey for verification by Ticket examiner.

Students are requested to strictly adhere to all the COVID standard safety protocols such as wearing of masks and social distancing.  

In view of COVID pandemic situation, Southern Railway has been permitting various categories of passengers in a phased manner in Chennai Suburban services.  It may be noted that all women passengers have already been allowed to travel in Chennai Suburban train services throughout the day without time restrictions.

1.Be in possession of complete details of reservations made in the coach and make all occupation details in the reservation chart along with number of vacant berths/seats.
2.Check the travel authority of the passengers in the coach, guide them to their berths/seats and also prevent unauthorized persons traveling in the coach.
3.Realise fare and any other charges due from the passenger and give receipt for the same.
4.Allot accommodations which are vacant to RAC passengers on demand at intermediate stations on realization of fare, surcharge,  reservation charges as per rules on first come first serve basis or according to the priority in the waiting list.
5.Pay prompt attention to all complaints from passengers in regard to non-working of lights, fans, tap etc., and take remedial action to get them rectified. Ensure cleanliness in the coach and also ensure the doors of the coaches are kept closed while on run. The doors of the vestibules are to be kept closed between 22.00hrs. and 06.00 hrs.
6.Always be polite, tactful and courteous in assisting passengers, leaving no room for complaint.
7.Wake up passengers to alight as requested.

Ministry puzzled as Railways loses 150 million passengers in first five months of FY16 

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Railways is at a loss as to why the number of passengers travelling in trains is going down despite no increase in fares. The railways have lost 150 million passengers in the five months of the current financial year, and Suresh Prabhu is worried.

The issue came up for discussion during the General Managers' (GMs) meeting on September 15. The trend of declining passengers left the Minister of State (MoS) for Railways Manoj Sinha astounded. "The trains are always full. You cannot get a reservation. Then how can you say the number of passengers travelling in trains is going down. There must be something wrong with the numbers," he is believed to have said. 


The railway ministry numbers show that while 3,575 million passengers travelled in trains in the period between April to August in FY15, the figure for the same period in the current year was 3,425 million, a fall of 4.2 per cent in ridership. Going by the trend, railways expect a nearly 5 per cent fall in passenger traffic by the end of the year.


This is the second year in a row that the passenger figures have shown a downward trend. Railways had lost 191 million passengers in 2014-15 too. "Though we were concerned, we thought it was an aberration and things would be alright. However, now things are becoming worse and we have to buck the trend for the sake of railway's financial health," a senior official in the traffic directorate of railways told ET. For that the railways have to first figure out the reason for the passengers' cold shoulder.

As a follow-up to the GMs meeting, Chairman Railway Board (CRB) AK Mittal has sent a letter to all the zonal GMs, asking them to find out from the divisions under them as to why the passenger numbers are declining.

"The Railway Board Members cannot figure out the trend. It has defied their belief that their low fares vis-a-vis road travel would ensure that passengers do not go anywhere," the traffic official said. 

Several officials failed to see any sense in CRB's letter. "It does not require rocket science to figure out why the passenger figures are going down. Maximum loss has been in the short distance and suburban segment. Obviously, passengers prefer road journeys to the unwelcoming railways. They prefer to pay more to save time than to wait for low fare, unpunctual and crowded trains," an official said. 

He listed out several reasons for passengers' unhappiness, right from booking of a ticket to the journey itself. "It is a pain for most passengers to buy a ticket. There are long queues. Ticket vending machines have been installed at some stations like New Delhi but many of them don't work. If they work, they ask for the exact amount of money and do not return cash. Mobile booking apps have been launched for some segments but how many can use them. Most passengers don't have credit or debit card ." he revealed.

Another official said there was also the possibility that ticket compliance had reduced and many passengers were travelling without tickets. He said there was a shortage of about 5,000 train ticket examiners (TTEs). "TTEs anyway restrict themselves to reserved sections and hardly venture out to the unreserved sections of the train," he added.

The only saving grace was that railways had registered a marginal increase of 8 million in the reserved category, mainly accounting for long distance and AC-coach travelers.

Lucknow: The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Railway Board secretary and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh over death of a youth who was pushed from a running train by a TTE. The Commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report that a youth fell on the track and died when a Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) on board Gorakhdham Express pushed him out of the running train near Khalilabad Railway Station on the July 23 last.

Travel Ticket Examiner pushed off from Dehradun- Bandra Express

TTE thrown out of train near F’bad

Faridabad, July 17

Prem Singh Meena (45), a travel ticket examiner (TTE) on board of the Dehradun- Bandra Express train was pushed off the running train near Old Faridabad here last night, allegedly by pickpockets. He has been admitted to a private hospital with multiple fracture and injuries. His condition is stated to be stable.

The TTE was checking the tickets as the train bound to Mumbai crossed the Tuglakabad station and was approaching Old Faridabad when six youths approached him. He said he was standing near the gate of S-8 sleeper coach when one of accused called him by name and asked for tickets as he claimed that they could not procure the tickets before boarding the train.

Meena said while he started preparing the tickets and asked for money, one of the them took him close to the door and pushed him out of the train. Meena, who is under treatment at Fortis- Escorts Hospital, told the police that the youths who had thrown him out of the train could be part of a gang of pickpockets and thieves active on trains on section of the railway network.
