WESTERN RAILWAY & IRCTC CONTINUE THE SERVICE OF NEEDY PERSONS DURING THE CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN Western Railway's staff from various departments continues to display commitment through their exemplary services and dedication, in the wake of the 21-days lockdown to contain the spread of the deadly Coronavirus. Despite the lifeline coming to a halt with Indian Railways decision to cancel all passenger services up to 14th April, 2020, Western Railway has not only continued to work at large by ensuring that essential commodities may be made available across the nation in this dire situation, but during this difficult time, Western Railway is also taking extra special care for the needy and poor persons, who reside near various station premises by providing free food, care packages and masks to them by RPF & other staff. Meanwhile, operation of parcel express trains over WR during lockdown period, started from Kankaria at Ahmedabad on 31st March, 2020.

According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, with no respite from Corona virus epidemic, IRCTC continues to serve the poor and backward section of the city by preparing community meals in its base kitchen at Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad. on the 30th and 31stof March, 2020 served 2980and 3400 community meals respectively from their Base Kitchen at Mumbai Central and 1000 meals each on 30th and 31st March from IRCTC Base Kitchen at Ahmedabad. Distribution of food to staff and needy persons started from 29thMarch, 2020 and till date 12490 meals have been distributed by WR zone and IRCTC/ West Zone. Shri Bhakar said that the number of NGOs and their requirement of meals is increasing and expected to rise in the forthcoming days. The community meals were served to the needy through the NGOs such as Mariamma Trust, Nanhi Pari, Salaam Mumbai, Future India Foundation, Robinhood Army, Mcaalm India, Indian Relief foundation, Kasyap Foundation,Ujjain Niswarth Seva Samiti, Rotary Club etc.,in co-ordination with the Commercial and RPF Department of Railways. Such generosity could also be witnessed across Vadodara, Surendranagar, Bharuch, Nadiad, Botad, Ankleshwar stations where food packets were distributed to the needy. The catering stall owners, Labour contractors too contributed to this noble cause.

Western Railway is also ensuring through all possibilities to maintain the supply of essential commodities across all parts of country by making sure that the movement of freight trains takes place. To mitigate the difficulties to a certain extent, Western Railway has come forward and decided to open transportation of essential items such as medical supplies, equipment and food etc. Accordingly, time table of 3 such Parcel Express trains has been declared by Western Rly, making total 16 trips during the period from 31st March to 15th April, 2020. Movement will be by parcel trains point to point as per extent rules. WR has finalized the time table for 3 Parcel Express trains for commodities such as Milk Product, Edible Oil, Spices, Groceries and Biscuits etc. 12 trips of the Parcel Special will run between Bandra Terminus and Ludhiana, 2 trips between Kankariya and Sankrail Goodsterminal and 2 trips between Karambeli and Changsari.Since the lockdown period till now from 22nd to 30th March, 2020, 469 rakes have been used to supply essential commodities amounting to 0.96 million tonnes. 1249 freight trains were interchanged with other railways, including 621 trains handed over and 628 trains taken over at different interchange points. 7 Millennium Parcel rakes of Parcel Vans/Railway Milk Tankers (RMTs) have been sent to different parts of the country to cope the demands of essential items such as milk powder, liquid milk and other general consumer goods.

Shri Bhakar stated that total losses over Western Railway up to 30th March, 2020 has been pegged at Rs 192.82 Cr (inclusive of suburban+ non-suburban), Western Railway has also successfully refunded Rs. 131.83 crores against cancellation of tickets and in Mumbai Division itself refund of Rs. 62.30 crores has been made.

RAIL TRAFFIC AFFECTED DUE TO FIRE IN 2 WAGONS OF GOODS TRAIN NEAR DAHANU ROAD STATION OF WESTERN RLY on MUMBAI- SURAT SECTION.

Shri A.K.Gupta – General Manager, W.Rly personally monitored the restoration work at site. Departmental inquiry ordered.

Various long distance trains from & towards Mumbai were affected due to fire incident in 2 JNPT containers between Dahanu Road and Vangaon yesterday on 8th November, 2018 at around 22.35 hrs in up line on Mumbai- Surat section of W.Rly. Shri A.K. Gupta- General Manager along with other senior officers of W.Rly rushed to the incident site immediately & personally monitored the restoration works at various levels. Due to these efforts disrupted rail traffic was restored fully in the earliest possible time by 8.50 am on 9th November, 2018. General Manager has ordered a departmental inquiry into this incident.

According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar- Chief Public Relations Officer of W.Rly, the fire was reported last night between Dahanu Rd & Vangaon stations of W Rly, when CONRAJ /JNPT was passing at about 22.30 hrs on 8th November, 2018 & stopped at KM 115/19 at 22.35 due to fire caught in CONT 22nd & 23rd wagons. Fire brigade from Dahanu Road was called immediately, but could not reach the site due to muddy area nearby. Accident Relief Train (ART) was ordered from Valsad at 23.12 hrs. A diesel loco departed from Valsad & another diesel loco departed from Virar for site. Due to repercussions of this, all UP & DN long distance trains were held up. OHE at site had also melted down. Restoration works were carried out in full swing & disrupted traffic was fully restored at 8.50 hrs on 9th November, 2018. Down line was given fit in the midnight itself at 1.35 hrs, while UP line was fully restored at 8.50 hrs in the morning. Due to this some suburban services between Dahanu Road & Virar was also affected. Due to this incident, various long distance trains of this route were diverted/ short terminated/ cancelled as per following details :-

Goods train derails in Bengal, rail traffic hit

Train services were affected after the engine of a goods train derailed on Sunday between Madpur and Jakpur in Howrah-Kharagpur section of South Eastern Railway, officials said.

No casualties or injuries were reported, a spokesperson said. “The engine derailed which affected railway traffic in up and down line,” he said.

“South India and Odisha-bound long distance trains from Howrah were delayed and stranded,” he said. “Movement of 11 pairs of locals trains was hit and Railways are trying to run eight pairs as soon as possible.”

Indian Railways has introduced time tabled goods container train (Cargo Express) on 15.06.2016 and time tabled automobile trains on 12.07.2016.

The time tabled container goods trains are running between

(i) Okhla (Delhi) and Whitefield (Bengaluru), and

(ii) Okhla (Delhi) and Tondiarpet (Chennai).

In both the directions.

The time tabled automobile trains are running between

(i) Gurgaon (Haryana) and Nidvanda (Karnataka), and

(ii) Kathuwas (Rajasthan) and Melpakkam (Tamilnadu).

In both the directions.

The customers can send goods/parcels in such trains through the services offered by Container Train Operators on payment of the charges for transportation of their goods.

Such freight trains are not confined only to one Zonal Railways, but they traverse over a number of Zonal Railway systems. Time tabled freight trains have been introduced on demand and based on feasibility of running them between pairs of stations on an available path. At present based on demand and feasibility the above two container and two automobile trains have been introduced.

Secunderabad: Ravindra Gupta, General Manager, South Central Railway flagged off a new container train circuit between Hyderabad and Chennai Port at Container Terminal Siding, Thimmapur on 14th June, 2016. This train will run as a weekly train to facilitate the movement of export containers and import container traffic between Hyderabad and Chennai Port.

This train service would cater the needs of industry and market of Hyderabad and adjoining Districts like Mahbubnagar, Rangareddy, Medak, Warangal, Nalgonda and also Guntur. Industrial export commodities like bulk drug pharma, Engineering / Electronic goods, Automobile, Textile, processed Foods etc. On domestic front, sufficient cargo of commodities like Granite, Food Items, Raw Materials, and Chemicals is expected to generate in the circuit. Industrial export commodities such as bulk drugs and pharmaceuticals, engineering and electronic goods, automobile, textiles, processed food among other goods are expected to generate cargo for this service.

New Delhi: With its revenue from freight dipping, Indian Railway is planning to venture into new markets like transporting bamboo, marble, automobile and agri-products to ramp up freight income. Railways transported 1,101.76 million tonnes of goods as against the target of 1,107 million tonnes in the 2015-16 fiscal, a shortfall of 5.24 million tonnes, an official said. As per the plan, the public sector behemoth will explore the possibility of transporting bamboo, marble, automobile, agri-products among 40 others goods which are generally carried via roads.

Blaming the fall in the loadings on global economic scenario, a senior Railway Ministry official said, “Freight demand is always impacted by the international market. Since the global market was not in the upswing, it affected the loadings in the last fiscal.” Besides, the official said, the transportation of traditional goods like coal and fertilisers is being affected by various factors. The freight is crucial for railways as it accounts for two thirds of its revenue. Railways have been dependent on only few commodities for freight income like coal, cement, steel, fertiliser, foodgrains, iron ore, and petroleum products. We are working on the strategy to diversify the freight basket by bringing more commodities into the operation, the official said. Besides, Railways is also taking steps for rationalising freight rates, which were not hiked in the 2016-17 budget. The public carrier will also appoint Customer Manager to deal with clients in the new emerging market.

Sand-laden bogies seized at Bantwal Railway station

Mangaluru: Officials of the Department of Mines and Geology of Dakshina Kannada seized six bogies containing sand that was to be transported illegally at Bantwal railway station on Wednesday. Based on a tip-off cops raided the railway station and seized sand-laden bogies of a goods train. Railway officials said they have all necessary documents to transport the sand but failed to produce them. “We have also found around 10 loads of sand stored outside the railway station and an investigation is on,” a cop added.

The Nossam - Banaganapalli Section (a length of 45.30 kms) of the Nandyal - Yerraguntla New Railway Line Project has been opened for Goods Traffic from 23rdJanuary, 2016.

Nandyal – Yerraguntla New Railway Line Project was sanctioned for a distance of 123 kms with an estimated cost of Rs. 843 crores and the work for this Project has been taken up in 3 Phases. Phase-I of the project includes a distance of 47.2 kms between Yerraguntla–Nossam section. The same has been completed and opened for Goods traffic in October 2012.

Phase-II works between Nossam - Banganapalli, a distance of 45.3 kms is now completed and opened for Goods traffic from 23rdJanuary, 2016.The left over distance of 30.5 kms between Banganpalli - Nandyal has been taken up in Phase-III and the works are progressing at a fast pace.

Rajasthan: ‘Water’ express to quench Bhilwara

For the first time, trains will be used to ferry water to Bhilwara during the winters as bad monsoon has dried up the town’s only source of surface water, official said on Friday.

A 50-coach water train will ferry water between Nasirabad and Bhilwara from December 20, said RK Ojha, superintending engineer of the public health engineering department, Bhilwara.

“We are cleaning the underground tank and sprucing up the pipeline at the railway station and it should be ready to receive water ferried by a train from December 20,” he said.

“Nasirabad railway station is getting ready for the train’s operation.”

This is the first time that trains will ferry drinking water during the winters in Rajasthan, he said.

The last time trains ferried drinking water to Bhilwara was in 2013, which were run between March 13 and August 3.

The December train will be the third in a decade, the first run was in 2010, when trains were used to ferry drinking water between Nasirabad and Bhilwara, and between Jodhpur and Pali during the summers.

“We will need to run the train until July or August, if the city does not receive water from the Chambal water project,” said Ojha.

Officials of the public health engineering department, which supplies drinking water to different neighbouhoods of the city, said Bhilwara’s main drinking water source – the Meja dam – is left with less than seven days of water supply as bad monsoon has dried up the dam.

Scanty monsoon could fill only 0.61% of the dam’s capacity as a result the city is getting a supply of less than 260 lakh litre every day against the demand of 513 lakh litre, some of them said.

Senior divisional manager (operations) of Ajmer division, Mukesh Saini said they have forwarded the PHED’s demand to the railways headquarters with the request for providing wagons.

The wagons, carrying drinking water have to be thoroughly cleaned by the carriage and wagon wing of the division, he said. “The PHED has requested for one rake from December 20 and another from February. We have forwarded their request to our head office and are waiting for directions.”

The train will ferry 25 lakh litre of water every day – not enough to make up for the city’s shortfall of 200 lakh litre – but PHED officials said they could not afford more trips since a single trip would cost the department Rs 4 lakh.

Pune: The two consecutive bumper cane harvesting years for the state’s sugar industry may have resulted in unsold stock for the sugar mills, but for the Railways, it has raked in profits.

The 10 per cent hike in the crushing of cane in 2014-15 (1,051 lakh quintal), in comparison to the previous year (930 lakh quintal), has resulted in a whopping hike of 66 per cent in sugar transport from the Pune Division of Indian Railways.

Railways is considered to be the preferred mode of transport for sugar consignments. According to senior officials with the commercial department of Pune Division, the freight carriage from Pune saw a hike of 43 per cent – a majority of the rise corresponds to increase in transport of sugar and that of petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL).

“In comparison to last year, our earning from goods has gone up by 43 per cent and a majority of the increase is due to hike in transport of sugar from Pune and adjoining districts to northern, north-eastern states and to southern ports, from where it is exported. Some of these are co-operative sugar mills while others are firms which aggregate produce from various mills for export. POL freight has also seen a marginal increase this year,” said Gaurav Jha, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Pune.

As per the data obtained from Jha’s office, a total of 310 rakes of goods train were booked between April 15 and October 15 this year from areas falling under Pune Division to be transported to various destinations as opposed to 187 rakes booked in the corresponding period last year. This indicates a 66 per cent rise.

In railways, a rake refers to an entire train which, in case of a goods train, would mean 40 compartments or wagons. A standard railway wagon has a capacity of 55 metric tonne. Thus a full rake can carry 2,200 metric tonne of goods.

In terms of revenue, Pune Division earned Rs 148.7 crore from the transport of sugar from April 15 to October 15 this year as compared to Rs 96.2 crore during the same period last year. Similarly, last year 120 full rakes of POL products were transported from Pune to other parts of the country in the six-month window, which shot up to 152 rakes this year. This resulted in a revenue surge of nearly eight crore from Rs 31.7 crore to Rs 39.3 crore.

Since the last two years the state has witnessed bumper production of sugar. The crushing season 2014-15 witnessed 930.41 lakh metric tonne of cane crushing and 1,051.43 lakh quintal of sugar being produced. This was a 10 per cent rise over the crushing season 2013-14, which witnessed 676.76 lakh metric tonne of cane being crushed and 771.2 lakh qunital of sugar being produced.

Due to the increase in production of sugar, both in the domestic and international market, mills struggled to sell their stock and were unable to pay the farmers the Fixed and Remunerative Price (FRP) that eventually led to cane arrears. As of October end, the cane arrears in the state stood at Rs 1,000 crore although the new crushing season has kick started.

Maharashtra is the second largest producer of sugar in the country producing more than 22 per cent of the total sugar produced in the country. Most of the sugar mills are located in districts of Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Pune and Solapur. The mills prefer using railways as the mode for transportation of sugar. With good rail connectivity in the region, mills use the freight services rather than the roadways.

Sanjiv Babar MD of the Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Association said, “Another reason is railways is cheaper and reliable than the roadways. There are separate rake for transport of sugar at Solapur and Kolhapur stations.”

Naraj Marthapur (NQR): A wagon of a goods train derailed at Marthapur in Cuttack district today, disrupting train traffic between Naraj and Dhenkanal in Odisha.

No one was injured in the accident involving the goods train which was carrying coal from Talcher to Jamanjodi in Koraput district.

Senior railway officials rushed to the spot and made arrangements for resumption of normal train services on the route by undertaking repair works, the officials said, adding services were restored five hours after the derailment.

However, some passenger trains like Bhubaneswar-Bolangir Inter City, Sambalpur-Puri Inter City and Angul-Puri Passenger had to be diverted through Nirgundi.

The Dudhsagar Railway Station situated near Castle Rock Station comes under the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka State under South Western Railway’s jurisdiction, is not opened for public and the Station is prohibited for common Public for alighting and boarding Trains.It is observed that a large number of people access the Dudhsagar waterfalls by travelling in Goods Train or by Trekking along the Railway Track or by alighting from Express Train with unscheduled stoppage.Recently, such unruly crowd resorted to stone pelting, climbing on the Train Engine thereby disrupting the Train services and endangering the safety of other passengers.

The Dudhsagar Station is not having any amenities to cater to Passengers.The Trains are stopping at Dudhsagar station only for Railway technical reasons and not for any passengers.It is highly unsafe for the Public to access Dudhsagar through Railway means.

Hence, SWR is hitherto warned that Trekking along Railway Track or Trespassing on Railway area and endangering safety of passengers is an offence and violators will be prosecuted under Sections 147, 151, 152 & 153 of Indian Railways Act, 1989.Besides,unlawful entry into Goods Train/Engine/Express Trains(forcibly at non-designatedStations) is also an offence and violators will be prosecuted under Sections 147, 156 & 174 of the Indian Railways Act, 1989.

SWR is requesting the Public to co-operate with the Railways to reach you safely by maintaining the track and tunnels in the Ghat section in a good fettle.

2600 Tonnes of Imported Urea arrives in Salem by special Goods Train

Salem (SA): About 2,600 tonnes of imported urea for distribution to the farmers through the primary agricultural cooperative and credit societies in Salem and Namakkal districts arrived here by a special goods train on Sunday.

The stock from Oman, a Gulf country, was imported by the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) Limited.

The entire stock which arrived in 42 goods wagons was handed over to the regional office of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation (TANFED), one of the members of the IFFCO, S. Arulmani, Field Officer, IFFCO, said.

To enable farmers commence farming operations without any delay, the TANFED shifted about 1,100 tonnes to the 400 and odd primary agricultural cooperative and credit societies in Salem and Namakkal districts through lorries on Sunday.

The rest of the stock will be supplied to the societies.

The rest 1,500 tonnes will be stocked in the godowns of the Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation in Salem and Namakkal, Mr. Arulmani said.

The urea stock supplied by the TANFED has to be sold to the farmers at the government rate of Rs. 270.50 paise per bag fixed by the government.

Ambala Cant Jn (UMB): The engine of a goods train derailed near Ambala Cantt railway station today, affecting movement of trains on Delhi-Amritsar section.

The rail traffic was fully restored by 3 p m, said a railway official.

Several trains including Swarn Shatabdi, Shan-e-Punjab and Dadar Express were diverted, said ADRM, Ambala Railway Division, S K Sinha.

Sinha, who visited the scene, said an inquiry had been ordered into the derailment.
