Ahmedabad, Metro Rail News: The first metro train of three coach with a carrying capacity of 90 passengers finally arrived in the city on Tuesday. The first train had been shipped from South Korea in first week of December and had arrived at Mundra Port on December 28. According to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation officials, the first train of three Coaches of Ahmedabad Metro Project (MEGA) moving from Hyundai Rotem local port facilitates from South Korea will make it trail run from January 15 after which the state is expected to take a call on the inauguration.

Minister of State of Railways & Communications, Shri Manoj Sinha today dedicated to the nation the Tori-Balumath rail line and Balumath-CCL Siding. Flagging off the train through Virtual Conferencing from Rail Bhavan today, Shri Manoj Sinha said “need for streamlining transportation of nearly 170 million tonnes/per day of Coal had been felt for long from Jharkhand’s Latihar region. Since 2005-06, the Tori-Shivpuri 44 km new railway line had been approved. Till 2013-14 the progress was quite slow and only Rs. 145 Crore could be spent. Subsequent to its inclusion in Hon’ble Prime Minister’s PRAGATI portal, the project work was fast-tracked and as a result, 19.3 km Tori-Balumath section has been completed with an expenditure of about Rs. 1063 Crore. The revised sanctioned cost of this project is 1589 crore rupees. Out of this stretch today the 19.3 km run from Tori to Balumuth has been commissioned due to the sincere commitment of Ministry of Railways and Jharkhand Government”.

The Tori-Shivpur new line (44.0 Km) is being constructed primarily for coal evacuation from Amrapali and Magadh coal mines of Latehar and Chatra districts of Jharkhand. This area has huge coal deposit. Between Tori to Balumath there are 3 stations, 5 major bridges, 7 ROBs and 39 minor bridges. As per initial estimate, CIL proposed to evacuate total 80 rakes of coal daily work from various coal blocks. Two sidings are being developed by CIL to connect Amrapali and Magadh coal mines to rail net work.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister congratulated the officers of the East Central Railway and particularly the engineers of the construction wing who helped complete the construction despite challengers of the difficult geographical terrain. The Tori-Shivpur rail line project is funded by Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) - a coal producing subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).

Commissioning of Tori-Balumath rail line and Balumath-CCL Siding will help to evacuate 5 to 6 rakes of coal everyday in first phase which will result in annual offtake of 6-7 million tonne (MT). On completion of the complete stretch Tori-Shivpur-Kathotia rail line, around 100 MT of coal will be evacuated annually from North Karanpura Coalfield of Jharkhand.

CCL, with active support from central & state governments, has commissioned many long pending projects in the last 4 years. This includes two mega coal mining projects viz. Magadh OCP and Amrapali OCP.

China to build more high-speed railways in five years: white paper

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China will build more high-speed railways as part of its efforts to establish a comprehensive transport system during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), according to a white paper issued Thursday by the State Council Information Office.

The white paper, titled Development of China's Transport, said China will increase the length of high-speed railways in service to 30,000 kilometers by 2020, which will link more than 80 percent of its big cities.

The country will renovate 30,000 kilometers of expressways and provide tarmac and cement roads and shuttle bus services for administrative villages with the necessary conditions, while all villages will have access to mail service, it said.

China will build commuting circles of 1 to 2 hours between the central cities and between central and peripheral cities, and one-hour commuting circles between central cities and key peripheral towns.

With priority focused on public transit, China will speed up the development of its urban rail and bus rapid transit, and other means of high-capacity public transport, according to the white paper.

By 2020, intercity railway networks will be completed in several urban agglomerations including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta areas.

The white paper said more efforts will be made in cities with 3 million or more residents to form urban rail transport networks, and about 3,000 kilometers of new tracks will be added to the current urban rail transit system.

China will also move to build integrated transport hubs, promote the green and intelligent development of transport services and improve safety in the transport industry, it said.

The country is aiming to build a comprehensive transport network that spreads from east to west and south to north, construct passageways that extend beyond its borders, and develop sea routes for the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road in the five-year period, said the white paper.

Strategic boost! Indian Railways to lay 240-kilometre rail track in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

According to media reports, the Ministry of Railways will soon give its nod to build a 240-kilometre broad gauge railway track between Port Blair and Diglipur, which lies in the north of the Andaman island.

At present the two towns are linked by a 350-km bus service that takes over 14 hours. The other mode of transport is ship that takes around 24 hours.

The proposed railway line will not only improve the tourism sector, but will also be of immense strategic value.

The cost to build the railway track will be 2,413.68 crore and notably the Union Territory administration has agreed to share 50 percent of the cost.

Port Blair is the only place which hosts India’s first and only tri-service command. The Army, Navy, and Air Force serve under a unified command here.

In its effort to provide better connectivity to bordering areas of the northeastern region, the central government has proposed railway lines to Tawang, Bamey and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is going to undertake three surveys for laying railway tracks connecting Bhalukpong to Tawang, Silapathar-North Lakhimpur-Bamey and between Murkongselek-Rupai-Pasighat.

“The proposed railway line between Bhalukpong to Tawang will also be one of the highest elevation in the country — 9,000 feet,” he said.

New Delhi: With its revenue from freight dipping, Indian Railway is planning to venture into new markets like transporting bamboo, marble, automobile and agri-products to ramp up freight income. Railways transported 1,101.76 million tonnes of goods as against the target of 1,107 million tonnes in the 2015-16 fiscal, a shortfall of 5.24 million tonnes, an official said. As per the plan, the public sector behemoth will explore the possibility of transporting bamboo, marble, automobile, agri-products among 40 others goods which are generally carried via roads.

Blaming the fall in the loadings on global economic scenario, a senior Railway Ministry official said, “Freight demand is always impacted by the international market. Since the global market was not in the upswing, it affected the loadings in the last fiscal.” Besides, the official said, the transportation of traditional goods like coal and fertilisers is being affected by various factors. The freight is crucial for railways as it accounts for two thirds of its revenue. Railways have been dependent on only few commodities for freight income like coal, cement, steel, fertiliser, foodgrains, iron ore, and petroleum products. We are working on the strategy to diversify the freight basket by bringing more commodities into the operation, the official said. Besides, Railways is also taking steps for rationalising freight rates, which were not hiked in the 2016-17 budget. The public carrier will also appoint Customer Manager to deal with clients in the new emerging market.

Sand-laden bogies seized at Bantwal Railway station

Mangaluru: Officials of the Department of Mines and Geology of Dakshina Kannada seized six bogies containing sand that was to be transported illegally at Bantwal railway station on Wednesday. Based on a tip-off cops raided the railway station and seized sand-laden bogies of a goods train. Railway officials said they have all necessary documents to transport the sand but failed to produce them. “We have also found around 10 loads of sand stored outside the railway station and an investigation is on,” a cop added.

Kochi: For a company which is based in a country that has the largest rail network in Europe, India, whose extensive rail network stands sixth in the world, has always been a major market. DB International GmbH, a consultant company and subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, which is at present engaged with Kochi Metro Project, views High Speed Rail as an area of huge potential in India. This also includes the Kerala High Speed Rail project, which is expected to be launched soon.

Simon Giovanazzi, Executive Director-Asia Pacific, DB International, was recently in the capital city, to part in talks regarding the firm’s future projects in the state.

“High speed rails in just in its infancy in the country with the Ahmedabad-Mumbai line announced recently,” says Simon, who spoke about the growth possibilities in this particular area. He added that urban transit is another major area of focus the company is looking at, as passenger rail is not a huge market potential in the country.

Speaking about its activities in Kerala, Simon says, “Though not the only one, we are concentrating on, Kerala as one of our major points of focus. Looking at the rail system in the state, so much requires to be done. Local transport is congested, and therefore, we feel that a light rail transport system needs to be set in place.”

Talking about the rail transport system in the country, Simon said, “India is already a rail nation. But it needs to be developed to have a more competitive system.”

Registered as a company in India just recently, the German-based company sees Indian cities as its next big market for popularising the high speed rail transport system.

“This is my first visit to the state’s capital city,” says Simon. He adds,”The company, which has a design team in Bangalore, is also involved with rail projects across different countries which include the high speed network in China, Light rail project in Canberra, Australia, metro project in Doha and more.”

Alstom to fully focus on Transport Business post its Energy Biz buyout by GE

Alstom closes the sale of its Energy activities (Power generation and Grid) to General Electric for an amount of approximately €12.4 billion (Including €1.9 billion of cash in the Energy businesses transferred to GE, and after €O.4 billion of commercial agreement settled in December 2014 and €0.3 billion of negative price adjustment announced in July 2015). Consequently the Group is today entirely refocused on Rail transportation business.

Proceeds of the transaction are used to acquire GE signalling activities for an amount of approximately €700 million and to reinvest in 3 Joint Ventures with General Electric (in the fields of grid, renewable and French steam & nuclear) for an amount of around €2.4 billion. As previously announced, part of the cash – in the range of €3.2 to €3.7 billion – should return to shareholders. The Board of Directors, meeting on 4 November 2015, will propose the launch of a public share buy-back offer (OPRA) followed by a capital reduction through cancellation of shares. This operation will be subject to shareholders’ approval at a General Meeting which will be convened before year-end. After the full completion of the transaction, Alstom will be deleveraged and rely on a strong balance sheet.

Alstom benefits from a sound market with solid growing factors. Thanks to its presence on all continents, its complete range of solutions and constant innovation, it holds leadership positions in trains, services, systems and signalling, reinforced today by the acquisition of GE Signalling. Netherlands-based Strukton Rail acquires Dutch Railways’ Industrial Sidings firm NSS

Netherlands-based rail technology company Strukton Rail has acquired NS Spooraansluitingen bv (NSS) from the Dutch Railways.

NSS manages and maintains 130km of track and 391 switches at industrial sites belonging to around 100 companies.

As part of the transaction, the NSS operations will continue under the name of Strukton Rail Short Line, which will soon contact the companies in the Netherlands owning an industrial siding or having an interest in an industrial track.

Dutch Railways has decided to divest the track connections between industrial tracks and the public railway network because they no longer part of its core business.

Strukton noted that the acquisition secures the future of the track connections and it fits well within its strategy of improving rail transport.

A sustainable solution is provided by rail transport in order to solve the problems that industrialisation and urbanisation tend to bring.

Strukton Rail invests in long-term railway management and maintenance in order to develop answers to the current and future infrastructural issues in passenger and freight transport.

The company is responsible for the maintenance of more than 2,700km of track in the Netherlands and more than 2,400km of track in Sweden.

Apart from the Netherlands and Sweden, Strukton Rail is located in Denmark, Belgium, Italy and France.

Strukton Rail Nederland managing director Jacob Zeeman said: “We are taking this next step to reinforce or actually fulfil our belief in the role that railways can and will play in infrastructure. A step that leads to full management and ownership.”

Earlier this year, Strukton Rail had opened a new office in Australia focusing in the field of operational asset management.

The company also also has activities in India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, South Africa, Surinam and Brazil.

The cash-strapped Indian Railways has moved the Supreme Court in a case against its dual pricing mechanism that can open up the possibility of the transporter collecting thousands of crores additionally from iron ore exporters, who allegedly misused the facility to evade full freight charges.

The railways has suffered a loss of over R29,000 crore in five years on freight earnings because of the faulty manner in which it charged for the carriage of iron ore, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) said in its report tabled in Parliament last month. The amount, if recovered, can significantly boost the capex plans of the cash-strapped entity, which has projected a 52% jump in Plan spending for the current fiscal.

Ever since the evasion was detected in 2011, the case has been under the scanner of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the CAG, CBI and other agencies. Seeking the transfer of around two dozen petitions pending before different high courts in the country against its 2008 dual pricing mechanism for iron ore, the government has challenged the Calcutta High Court’s order in December last year that upheld the railways’ policy, but restrained it from blacklisting the companies and imposing penalty on them for evading the full freight charges by falsely claiming that the iron ore they moved through railways was meant for domestic consumption.

Maha CM ask MMRDA to conduct Feasibility Study on Constructing 6-lane Elevated Rail-cum-Road Corridor

Mumbai: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has told the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to submit a feasibility report within two months on constructing a six-lane elevated rail and road corridor across Mumbai on single pillars above existing railway lines.

The chief minister has also proposed integration of all modes of transport, such as BEST buses, Monorail, Mumbai Metro and Railways, so that one can use a single ticket/smartcard to travel seamlessly from one corner of the city to another using any mode.

The two announcements were made on Sunday at a function at which the state government signed an MoU with the railway ministry to launch a special purpose vehicle (SPV) on a 50-50 partnership. The SPV will speed up implementation of rail projects in the state.

Sources said an integrated rail-road six-lane corridor could come up along the CST-Panvel section. Fadnavis said the state plans to invest Rs10,000 crore to strengthen the rail network across Maharashtra. He also officially launched the Rs11,441 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-III project for Mumbai region at the function.

The MUTP-III involves quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu section, a new link between Airoli and Kalwa stations, a new corridor between Panvel and Karjat, redevelopment of 21 suburban stations and trespass control on tracks.

“Rail projects such as the Parli-Beed-Nagar link, a rail network in naxal-affected Gadchiroli and Wardha-Nanded, have been discussed for 15 years. But with the SPV, we will complete them within five years,” he said.

Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu said similar SPVs will be launched in 20 states to speed up rail projects in India. A concession agreement was also signed between JSW Jaigarh Port Ltd and Konkan Railways for developing a 33.7km railway corridor, connecting Jaigarh port to the new Digni station on Konkan Railway. “International cargo from our ports will travel seamlessly to Konkan Railway, from where it will be distributed across India, enabling the railways to earn huge freight revenue and improve the GDP,” Prabhu said, adding that the elevated road-rail concept for Mumbai had his ministry’s go-ahead.

He also inaugurated a Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC) e-office, which will have a transparent e-tendering process and paperless communication.

Bangalore: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) have tied up to provide seamless connectivity between two modes of transport-buses and metro trains-so that commuters can enjoy a hassle-free public transportation system in the City.

Ekroop Caur, Managing Director, BMTC, said: “We are making efforts to create a synergy between BMTC buses and metro trains so that the services complement each other and people are able to travel in a convenient manner.”

“The Detailed Project Report (DPR) in this regard will be prepared in one or two months and we hope that the Namma Metro Phase I becomes operational by that time.”

She added that other infrastructure such as subways or over-bridges will also be constructed near bus stations and metro stations if the need arises.

A route survey is being carried out across the City to chalk out route plans for better connectivity. Officials have already visited Kalasipalya, Yeshwantpur, Banashankari and Vijayanagar. Both the corporations have also formed a committee to work together and understand the needs of the travelling public to come out with a systematic and complementary schedule of routes and timings of bus and metro services.

In the pipeline is a plan to provide a feeder bus link between MG Road, Commercial Street, Mantri Mall and Kempegowda Bus station so that the metro train services can be used by BMTC commuters and vice versa. Another feeder bus-Metro train link is going to be established between Baiyappannahalli and Whitefield, and one to Jalahalli, Nagasandra.

Thats not all. After failing in its experiment the first time to provide a feeder bus to ferry metro commuters at Sampige station, now BMTC and BMRCL, are reviving the service and are hopeful that it will work after Metro Reach 3B becomes functional.

Presently, hundreds of factory workers travel all the way up to Nagasandra on the North-South Corridor of the Namma Metro.

Nearly 35,000 commuters travel between Sampige Station and Nagasandra and this number goes up by 10,000 during weekends. The earlier feeder bus service had less takers when the last station was till Peenya and hence the BMTC had to discontinue the service because of lack of demand, metro officials said.

One of the biggest hindrances for the commuters while taking feeder buses is the inability to cross over to the metro stations from one end of the road to the other amidst heavy traffic. This is particularly common at Yeshwantpur railway station, Peenya Industrial area. Once the subways or foot over bridges come up, this problem can be taken care of, said a metro official.

Already, the BMRCL has floated tenders for construction of underpasses at Jalahalli, Dasarahalli and Nagasandra, added the official.

Train movement disrupted at Sealdah south section

Train movement was disrupted at rush hours on Sealdah's south section of Eastern Railway after hundreds of people blocked tracks at Subashgram station demanding adequate link trains.

The daily commuters squatted on the tracks this morning preventing movement of trains at rush hours connecting Sealdah from South 24 Parganas.

The blockade was lifted after the ER authorities assured the commuters to look into their grievances.

MUMBAI: Indian Railways schedules will now be available on Google Transit, a feature on Google Maps.

In addition, the updated public transport information for eight Indian cities would be available on the App, a company release said.

Google Transit, a feature in Google Maps, helps in planning public transport trips efficiently, and is available through Google Maps app on any Android or iOS device, as well as on the desktop.

The current update will allow access to information for 12,000 trains, as well as updated details for bus and metro routes from Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, the statement said.

"Google Transit is part of our effort to make Google Maps more comprehensive, accurate and useful for millions of people around the world who take buses, trains, metros or trams to their next destination," Google Maps director, program management, Suren Ruhela said.

"We hope that the addition of the Indian Railways schedules pan-India and updated information for eight cities to Google Transit in India will make it a little easier to plan your next trip," he said.

Google Maps has public transportation schedules for more than one million transit stops worldwide in 2,800 cities, including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.

Since 2005, Google has collaborated with hundreds of public transit agencies worldwide to make their schedule information accessible to all Google Maps users.

Thailand wants to expand Rail network to link India

Thailand’s military junta has said that it wants to widen the country’s railway tracks and expand the network to form transport links with important markets in India and China. The chief of the junta’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) General Prayuth Chan-ocha has said the NCPO’s working plan includes initiatives to repair existing one-metre wide tracks and construct new 1.435 metre wide tracks in parallel. The new wider tracks will also be built on whichever routes are necessary to open up rail connections with China, India and other regional countries, he was quoted as saying by local media.
