Bangalore Suburban Train Services to Private Party once Revised Detailed Project Submission

Bangalore Suburban Train Services to Private Party once Revised Detailed Project Submission

The suburban rail project will have a 148-km network in the city with 57 stations.
BANGALORE: The suburban rail project may see trains being operated through a private party after the suggestion made it to the revised detailed project report. As per the plan, the suburban rail project will have a 148-km network in the city with 57 stations. Nearly 50 trains, each having six coaches, will be operated and each coach will have a capacity of 300 passengers.
Amit Garg, who heads Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), a special purpose vehicle for the project, said: “Our consultant has suggested a public-private partnership (PPP) model for running the trains on the lines of the Delhi Metro. In many parts of the world, in projects involving huge infrastructure, governments provide civil infrastructure and the operations are done through a private party. As per the estimation done, the cost of procuring the trains is around ₹2,000 crore. A final decision on whether operations of trains will be done through a private player will happen after we complete the civil infrastructure.”
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that it is is contemplating roping in private operators to run metro trains in phase II of the Namma Metro project, while Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has already taken a decision to lease electric buses through a private operator under FAME II scheme.
Mr. Garg said that as per the DPR, fares for travelling in trains under the suburban project are likely to be lesser than Namma Metro fares, but higher than BMTC.
In April, while asking the K-RIDE to revise the DPR, the Union government had suggested that the fare box revenue should be planned in a manner that it would meet operations and maintenance cost of the project, duly considering the fare prevalent in other modes of transport.
The Centre had also suggested to explore the PPP model in implementing the project and revise the DPR in such way that suburban rail alignment must not clash with Namma Metro alignments.
On Monday, the Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway (SWR) held a meeting with MPs and they asked the officials to expedite the pending project.
Mr. Garg said, “In August, the Karnataka government approved the revised DPR. In September, the Ministry of Railways approved it. Now, the DPR has to be approved by the Expanded Board of Railways (EBR) in which the NITI Aayog is the member. We expect the EBR to approve the project in a week or 10 days. Then it goes to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. It is a major investment decision. We are hoping we will get final approval by November .”
The entire project is estimated to cost ₹ 15,990 crore.

BMRCL U-Griders for Constructing the Viaduct

BMRCL U-Griders for Constructing the Viaduct

BENGALURU: To expedite much-delayed Silk Board-K R Puram (19.5km) on Outer Ring Road and KR Puram-Kempegowda International Airport (36km) metro corridors, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has decided to use U-girders for constructing the viaduct.
This is the first time BMRCL is using U-girders for Metro work. “In the ORR-KIA route, U-girders would be used for almost 80% of the corridor’s length. Another 12% of the length with sharp curves will have I-girders. About 8% will be below the road level,” BMRCL managing director Ajay Seth told. “Phase 1 and 2 mostly used ‘box-girders with pre-cast post-tensioned segmental construction’ and I-girders at transition spans next to each station,” he said.
U-girders will involve casting the entire span of a viaduct between two piers in single piece whereas box-girders will have many segments between two piers. One U-girder between two pillars can be erected overnight, against 5-6 days required in case of box girders.
“U-girders are cast in yard like box-girders. But in case of box-girders, it takes longer to join the segments at the site. In U-girders that time can be saved. However, this means we will need larger casting yards, larger cranes and wide roads at construction sites. The ORR-KIA line enables such wider road access,” said Seth. The BMRCL’s earlier plan to use U-girders for the elevated section between Gottigere and Swagath Road Cross in Reach 6 of Phase 2 did not fructify.
“Now there is enough experience available in the country for that technology. Metro corporations in Delhi, Chennai, Kochi and Mumbai have used that. Systra, an engineering firm, will provide the design since they hold the patent. IISc will do the proof-checking,” said Seth.
The BMRCL has set 2023 deadline for ORR-Airport lines. However, it is yet to invite tenders for both corridors. To avoid further delays, BMRCL has already commenced soil testing and issuing notices to the property owners for land acquisition for these two-corridors.
Techies commuting on the ORR as well as passengers and airport staff travelling to and from KIA have been demanding for Metro connectivity for the past several years.
Experts say U-girders will also save time as well as lower construction cost. The U-girders will also have built-in sound barriers, apart from built-in cable support. Compared to other types of girders, the much longer U-girders drastically reduce construction time.
However, due to their length, they require absolute precision during construction. Also, their length makes transporting them from the casting yard to the site a tricky proposition. While the conventional box girders and I-girders are 2.2m to 2.5m long, the length of U-girders varies between 22 and 27 metres. The longer length means a span between two pillars can be constructed overnight compared to 5-6 days in case of conventional girders. Delhi Metro has used these girders in Airport Express Line, the Badarpur to Faridabad section of Violet Line and a section in Noida.

Namma Metro:Fares to go up by 10-12 percent from tomorrow

Namma Metro:Fares to go up by 10-12 percent from tomorrow
BENGALURU: Fares on Namma Metro have been increased by 10 to 12 per cent in light of the commissioning of the entire Phase-I. The hike will come into effect from Sunday when the commercial operations of the North-South Corridor are set to begin.
The decision was taken during a high-level meet held by Metro officials on Thursday night.
Confirming the news to Express, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development, Mahendra Jain, said,
“Yes, the fares will go up approximately by 10 per cent.” The minimum fare (`10) between two stations will remain unchanged. “This is regardless of whether the distance between two stations is 600m or 1.5km,” said a Metro official.
According to a top Metro official, the fares are fixed this time based on the footfalls at each station. The existing Purple Line (Baiyappanahalli to Mysore Road) and operational part of Green Line (Mantri Square Sampige Road to Nagasandra) will see the increase effected. It will be automatically incorporated when fixing the fares for the new stretch from Mantri Square to Yelachenahalli.
BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer U A Vasanth Rao said, “We have not increased the fares since the launch of Metro services in the city in 2011. The additional sum will go towards funding our operations and maintenance costs and towards debt servicing.”
The full fare table from point to point will be released on Saturday.

BMRCL PLAN FOR SURFACE METRO IN BANGALORE CITY

Surface Metro | BMRC plans to run Surface Metro Rail in Bengaluru city

Bengaluru: After being delayed many times over, Phase 1 of the Namma Metro is now inching towards completion but the government already appears to be contemplating another rail network for the city – Surface Rail

Interestingly, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is likely to prepare the project report for the Surface Rail. “For a city like Bengaluru, the Metro network alone won’t suffice. We are planning to build a Surface Rail along the proposed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), so that the city has a circular train network. This will, in turn, be connected to the Metro at strategic points,” official sources told TOI.

Sources in the urban development department said that the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) was likely to include the right of way for the rail network along the proposed route of the PRR. “The 65km-long PRR cuts through Sarjapur Road, Old Madras Road, Ballari Road and KR Puram. These points will be bookended by Hosur Road and Tumakuru Road. In order to provide a circular network, one half of the Surface Rail be built along the existing NICE Road, and the reminder on the PRR,” said a UDD official.
The official pointed out that while the basic design, and the source of the train’s power won’t be too different, the Surface Rail would ride at a height of just 2m or 3m above the ground. “Underpasses or over bridges will be built to ease regular road traffic, where the Surface Rail passes,” he added.
However, UDD sources said that the proposal was still on the drawing board. “To start with, we need to tackle all the challenges before going ahead with the PRR. By then, a detailed report on Surface Rail and its feasibility would be ready, and we could propose it to the government. It’s too early to talk about the cost,” the official said.

Now, priority seating for women, disabled on metro

Now, priority seating for women, disabled on metro

Instructions to the effect will be put up on all trains.

Starting Sunday, Namma Metro trains will have priority seating for the differently abled, senior citizens, women and children. This will be provided on the twin seats in all coaches, totalling 20 seats in every train. Instructions to the effect will be put up on all trains.

U.A. Vasanth Rao, spokesperson for BMRCL, said while these seats would not be completely reserved for these categories of commuters, they would be priority seating, requesting other occupants to vacate the seats and make room for the needy during the journey, if any.

“We don’t want to make it mandatory and block these seats. We are requesting commuters to raise up to the spirit of the move and help those in need,” he said.

High-speed rail link more feasible to KIA than metro: Sreedharan

High-speed rail link more feasible to KIA than metro: Sreedharan

Delays have cost Bengaluru a metro project that would have aided in the reduction of traffic congestion within the city, E. Sreedharan, principal adviser to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., who is popularly known as the ‘metro man’, has said.

While the metro was conceptualised a decade ago when Bengaluru’s population was barely 60 lakh, the four-year delay will see the network criss-crossing a city with more than 1.1 crore inhabitants. “There should have been a larger network by now. The only way to tackle the traffic is to aggressively expand the metro network,” he told reporters on Saturday.

Mr. Sreedharan believes bus rapid transport system (BRTS) cannot be managed on the narrow roads of the city.

He was in the city to launch the State chapter of the not-for-profit organisation, Foundation for Restoration of National Values. Among the various objectives of the organisation, including police and administration reforms, is to “highlight” the delays in the implementation of the Phase I metro network by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL). “The terrain or the geology of the city cannot be the excuse for cost escalation. There are rocks and difficult tunnelling conditions in most cities. Metros have more-or-less followed the scheduled inauguration elsewhere. There needs to be somebody to question things,” Mr. Sreedharan said.

Airport link

With the Kempegowda International Airport being nearly 45 km from the city, Mr. Sreedharan said a high-speed rail link, which has been virtually scrapped by the government, was the more feasible option rather than extending the metro network. “Imagine the kind of land required for the metro project and the amount of time it would take to complete it. The best option would be high-speed rail, with check-in facility at the centre of the city itself,” he said.

Vidhana Soudha employees may soon have easier access to Metro station

Vidhana Soudha employees may soon have easier access to Metro station

BENGALURU: Easy access to their workplace is in store for employees of Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha who use the Metro extensively, if a proposal by the government to provide underground access to these offices from the Dr B R Ambedkar Metro station materialises.

A meeting was held here recently by Chief Secretary Arvind Jadhav with top Metro officials to discuss the proposal. “The plan is to link the underpass at Dr B R Ambedkar (Vidhana Soudha) Metro station to the existing subway between Vidhana and Vikasa Soudha,” said a government source.

A top official said that nearly 6,000 employees work in these two buildings.  The opening of the East-West Underground Corridor on the Baiyappanahalli-Mysore Road in April has seen large number of employees switch over to Metro as the station is very close to their offices, the source said.

There is a Metro entry near Vikasa and Vidhana Soudha that connects the underground station through a long subway. Also, there is an existing subway between the two structures which is hardly used, documents reveal. There is a feasibility to connect the Metro subway and the Vikasa-Vidhana Soudha subway, it states.

Survey of the area has been completed and a general layout drawing has been prepared by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).

BMRC to invite startups to set up offices at its stations

BMRC to invite startups to set up offices at its stations

Bangalore: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) is inviting emerging businesses to set up offices within five of its stations, following the success of a so-called Rsmakerspace’, Workbench Projects, that opened at the Halasuru station in February 2015.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd currently has 31 stations operational along 18 km from Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road and along 13 km from Nagasandra to Sampige Road.

“We have carved our spaces required for startups and ecommerce companies,” said Pradeep Singh Kharola, managing director of BMRCL.

“It is not like Workbench Projects, which is renting out space (at the Halasuru metro station) on a monthly basis. These (startup) outlets will be proper offices.”

To encourage startups to set shop at its stations, BMRCL is relaxing certain criteria for them, such as the one related to net worth.

Startups can bid for 31 office spaces of 100 sqft to 4,000 sqft at the Byappanahalli, Swamy Vivek ananda Road, Indiranagar, Halasuru and Trinity metro stations. The rents range from Rs 35 per sqft to Rs 120 per sqft depending on the station, said UA Vasanth Rao, general manager, finance, BMRCL.

Pavan Sheth, a systems engineer employed with Work Bench Projects, said several startups already frequent the makerspace as rents elsewhere are too high. “If they get space at a lesser price (at a metro station), a big problem is solved for them.”

Shashank Somanna, partner at Holystoked skating institute, has been running classes at the Swamy Vivekananada Road metro station for the past nine months. “The rent is cheaper compared to other places and it is good to start with as many people pass through the metro station every day ,” he said.

The tender document for selection of licensees of retail outlets will be available on BMRCL’s website from July 4 to July 26. The bid document can be purchased until July 26.

The bids have to be submitted on August 11.

BMRCL :Metro set to increase frequency

BMRCL :Metro set to increase frequency

Your wait for a metro train will come down as Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. is set to increase the frequency on the Purple Line by reducing the gap between trains from 8 minutes to 6 minutes from this week. The Purple Line connects Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road.

Hundreds of commuters have been complaining about trains being crowded due to lesser frequency.

The Purple Line was inaugurated on April 30. The number of daily commuters is around 1.15 lakh, which works out to an average of 777 passengers per train. Almost immediately after the launch of the entire line, BMRCL had increased the frequency of trains by reducing the gap from 10 minutes to 8 minutes. However, due to technical issues, the time between trains could not be decreased further. BMRCL expects the average number of commuters to touch 1.5 lakh passengers per day.

Namma Metro Peak hours frequency may go up

Namma Metro Peak hours frequency may go up

BENGALURU: With most trains running to full capacity during peak hours, Namma Metro is now contemplating increasing the frequency of the trips.

Asked about the lack of breathing space in the trains, Pradeep Singh Kharola, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, told City Express, “We are seized of the matter. Our officials are studying the traffic in trains.”

Trains are run every eight minutes during peak hours (8 am to 8 pm) and every 10 minutes during non-peak hours. “We can increase the frequency. Right now, we are watching the situation,” he said.

Kharola remained non-commital on when the frequency would be increased, though. “From eight minutes, we could make it five or four minutes,” he said.

The BMRCL office is flooded with various requests, including one for a separate compartment for women, Kharola said. “It is just a fortnight since the launch. We want to allow things to settle down first.”

Big Demolition

Meanwhile, work on acquiring properties for Phase II of Namma Metro is proceeding at a fast pace.

A total of 173 properties on the 11.5 km stretch, between Mahadevapura and Whitefield, have been acquired for the line, said a top official.

BMRCL has now acquired all properties required between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield.

“Compensation will be paid by June 15, We have already paid `200 crore to Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board to disburse the payments,” the official added.

Among the properties acquired is a seven-storeyed building belonging to Balaji Corporate Services, which the Metro will demolish next month. The previous tallest demolition undertaken by Metro was a four-storeyed building on Tumakuru Road.

The seven-storeyed building is located just before the proposed ITPL Metro station (near Prestige Shantiniketan).

With the track running through this building, it was absolutely important to acquire it, the official said.

“We wanted only 700 sq m of its 1,600, but since the building had already been constructed and half a building could not be handed over, the owner wanted us to acquire the entire property,” he added.

The building was completed just a year ago with only the ground floor and first floor being occupied by commercial establishments.

“We had notified the owner a couple of years ago, but he did not expect the Metro to actually come up and went ahead with the construction,” the official said.

The owner might have to be paid about `15 crore for the property, he added.

IPL matches increase ridership
  •  So far, about 15 lakh commuters have travelled along the East-West Corridor between Mysuru Road and Baiyappanahalli.
  • Daily occupancy now hovers around the 90,000 mark on a working day and around 1.2 lakh during weekends.
  •  IPL matches and the recent 10K marathon have contributed to packed weekend trips.

Bangalore Metro Station will soon have startups spaces to business work

Bangalore Metro Station will soon have startups spaces to business work

Bangalore: Bangalore also called the Silicon Valley of India, is a major tech-hub of the country and attracts a lot of geeks from around for its booming startup culture.

It comes as no surprise that the Government in Karnataka is promoting startups to such an extent that spaces at metro station will soon be rented to budding entrepreneurs for their ventures. In a report by Media, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation is planning to send out notification to startups for renting space at large metro stations in the city.

Bangalore’s metro service is still under construction and only recently a small patch of 4.8kms underground was made open to the public for transportation. There have been certain roadblocks on the way preventing the metro to expand as quickly as planned.

Owing to low ridership in the beginning, the plan had taken a backseat, but with the new stations opened recently, the metro officials have come out with the idea of staging startups at the stations to utilize the whole area properly.

A statement from BMRC read, “Some of the stations have ample spaces that can be allowed to given to start-ups for for commercial activities. Earlier, they wouldn’t have got good rentals because of insufficient footfall but now investors or mentors of these start-ups are keener about it. This is for a purely commercial purpose wherein the investors are examining the feasibility of their projects and are the decision makers of whether to go ahead with or not.”

BMRC was quick to confirm that these startups will only be operational if they reduce the inconvenience to riders in terms of getting access to electronics, groceries, meals, jewellery, art and craft and repair shops etc.

Effectively, these small startups will cater to the riders at these stations or around the stations to get their daily fix without the hassles of travelling to far off areas, considering the traffic in Bengaluru is hectic.

An excellent initiative from BMRC to give entrepreneurs exposure to the daily riders on the metro. In case you missed your morning coffee, you know where to get it before reaching the office, or let’s say your phone stopped working last night, you could get it repaired at a metro station close to you.

Nearly 2 lakh people used the East-West Metro line -BMRCL

Nearly 2 lakh people used the East-West Metro line -BMRCL

Namma Metro woes: Things you didn’t do, BMRCL

Bengaluru: After joy rides of Saturday and Sunday, when nearly 2 lakh people used the East-West Metro line, the real test for the Metro came on Monday when regular commuters switched to spanking new transport system from BMTC buses, private vehicles, taxis and autorickshaws. “Majority of the commuters during the peak hours were Vidhana Soudha employees and government staffers as most of the tickets sold were for the Majestic and Dr B.R. Ambedkar stations,” said a BMRCL official.

The major attractions are reduced time of travel, traffic-free commute, clean and well-maintained Metro and the fares that are less than what even cab aggregators charge. Mr Sadashiva, a second division assistant at the High Court, said, “It saves time and money. If people start using the smart cards issued by the BMRCL they can avail more discounts. But the BMRCL should reduce the cost of the cards, which is Rs 50.”

The Metro fares are said to be cheaper than that of BMTC AC buses. The minimum fare starts from Rs 10 and the maximum is Rs 40 for an 18.1 km travel.
BMRCL officials said that more than 90, 000 passengers used the Metro on Monday. The maximum number of passengers travelled from Byyappanhalli to M.G. Road and from Magadi Road to Vijayanagar.

Thousands of people use Metro to reach IPL
More than 10,000 people took the Metro trains between 6 pm and 7 pm to reach the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to watch the RCB-KKR IPL cricket match. The BMRCL officials said that the number will go up as thousands of people are expected to take Metro to go back home later during the night.

Tokens don’t get read by machines
Technical glitches worsened things as many e-tokens issued were not read by the reader at the entry gate, forcing commuters  to exchange them at the ticket counters.  Bhagya, 75, who was travelling with her family, was unhappy that her e-token for her first Metro ride was not accepted by the machine.

Poor seating arrangements at stations
Many commuters, especially senior citizens, were seen sitting on pillars at the Mysuru road station during peak hours while waiting for the Metro to Baiyappanahalli station. Many felt the BMRCL should have made seating arrangements at least for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Confusion over station names
Names of stations that don’t reflect the localities they are in created confusion among passengers. The confusion was mainly over the Kempegowda station in Majestic.

Short train stops
Passengers rushed to enter  the trains which stopped for less than 30 seconds at each station. Not everyone could make it and some were left behind.

Long disorganised queues
With thousands of employees of both public and private organisations choosing to travel by Metro to  work,  many stations had long unweildy queues, making it difficult for passengers to get their e-tokens for travel. A 65-year-old retired government employee, Shankar, who was travelling from Dr Ambedkar station to Mysuru road complained that people were jumping the queues and the Metro staff were taking too long to issue tickets. “They need to increase the number of ticket counters. At noon I had to wait for 10 minutes and force people to follow the queue to get a ticket. Just imaging the plight of thousands of commuters during peak hours. The authorities should come out with some alternatives as soon as possible as this stretch is being used by many commuters who want to avoid the traffic congestion on the roads,” he said.

Penalty for loitering
Like at the Delhi Metro stations, those loitering at the  Metro stations of the newly opened city line for over an hour,  were  fined Rs 10 by BMRCL officials. The e-token of such commuters don't get read at the exit gate. Commuters Rajesh and his friend , who paid the fine of Rs 10 each,  claimed they were  looking around Dr. B R Ambedkar Metro station , which has photographs displayed on the making of South India’s first underground  station.

No paper ticket to claim reimbursement
Unlike the BMTC or the Indian railways, people who commute by Namma Metro do not receive paper tickets to claim reimbursement at work.

Shortage of seats on trains
With only 150 seats on the trains, many were left standing just like on BMTC buses.
