Centre to come out with new Metro Rail policy: Venkaiah Naidu
NEW DELHI: The Centre will come out with a new Metro Rail policy for future projects, in line with the government-approved National Policy on Transit Oriented Development (TOD), Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said here today.
“The Centre is formulating a new Metro Rail policy to enable innovative finance such as land value capture, transit- oriented development for new Metro Rail projects,” he said.
Besides the new metro policy, a National Policy on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) has been formulated and approved by the Union government, he said.
This will form a mandatory requirement for all new metro projects in the country, Naidu said.
The minister made the remarks after flagging off the first underground Metro Rail service from Tirumangalam to Nehru Park here, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami.
Naidu said the Centre has standardised critical specifications of rolling stock and signalling systems of Metro Rail for promoting standardisation and indigenisation. He said the government was also planning to roll out a ‘green urban mobility’ scheme, aimed at improving overall travel facilities in cities by providing last mile connectivity through non-motorised transport like pedestrian pathways and bicycle sharing.
Referring to the new metro line here, Naidu said 28 kms of a total length of 45 kms in Phase 1 of the project will now be operational.
“This project was sanctioned by Government of India at a cost of Rs 14,600 crore. The government has so far released about Rs 11,301 crore for the Chennai Metro project,” he said.
With today’s launch of the line, arounhd 341 kms of metro rail has become operational in New Delhi, the National Capital Region including Gurgaon, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Mumbai.
“Around 529 kms are at present under construction in places like Delhi, NCR, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kochi and Ahmedabad,” Naidu said.

Chennai Metro Rail Project –Phase-I – Inauguration of passenger services in the first underground stretch from Koyambedu to Nehru Park
Chennai Metropolitan Area is witnessing rapid growth of population and vehicles. In order to provide a sustainable urban transportation
system for Chennai and to increase the share of public transportation, the Government of Tamil Nadu decided to implement the Chennai Metro Rail
Project.
The Phase I of the project approved both by Central and State Governments, covers a 45.046 km metro rail network i.e. Blue Line– From Washermenpet to Airport (23.085 Km), Green Line– From Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount (21.961 Km), at an estimated completion  cost of Rs.14,600 crores.
On 6.11.2013, the late Hon’ble Chief Minister Puratchi Thalaivi Amma had flagged off the trial run of the first train set received from Brazil at Koyambedu and inaugurated the 110/33 KV Power Sub-Station. Based on the progress achieved in the construction and system related works and the statutory clearances accorded by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety, the late Hon’ble Chief Minister Puratchi Thalaivi Amma inaugurated the passenger services in the first elevated stretch from Alandur to Koyambedu (10.15 Kms) on 29.6.2015. The late Hon’ble Chief Minister Puratchi Thalaivi Amma also inaugurated passenger services in the remaining elevated section from Little Mount to Airport (9
Kms) and from Alandur to St.Thomas Mount (1.2 Kms) on 21.9.2016. Now all the elevated corridors under Phase-I of the project are fully operational. The Phase I Extension project to extend Corridor-1 of Metro Rail fromWashermanpet to Thiruvottriyur / Wimco Nagar covering a length of 9.051 km at an estimated completion cost of Rs.3770 crores received approval from the Government of India in June 2016. The late Hon’ble Chief Minister Puratchi Thalaivi Amma laid the foundation stone and commenced construction works of the work on 23.7.2016.
Substantial progress on the construction of the underground section of the project has been achieved. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, after his statutory inspection on 12-14, April, 2017, has given clearance for commencing passenger services on the first underground section of the Green Line from Koyambedu to Nehru Park Station (7.40 Kms) and for the opening of 7 Stations at Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar East, Shenoy Nagar, Pachaiyappa’s College, Kilpauk and Nehru Park. After complying with certain observations made by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, the above underground section is now fully ready for commencement of passenger services. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Hon’ble Union Minister of Urban Development will inaugurate the passenger services on the first Underground Section in Green Line from Koyambedu to Nehru Park (7.4 KMs) of Chennai Metro Rail Project- Phase-I on 14-5-2017 at 10 am at Thirumangalam Metro Rail Station.

Delhi Metro fares hiked by up to 66 Percent

Delhi Metro fares hiked by up to 66 Percent
New Delhi, May 8 (IANS) Delhi Metro on Monday hiked its fare by up to 66 per cent, with the maximum fare going up to Rs 50 from the earlier Rs 30.
Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) spokesperson Anuj Dayal told the media that the minimum fare – applicable for a distance of up to two kilometres – had been raised from Rs 8 to Rs 10.
The new fare structure has been divided into six slabs: Rs 10 (0-2 km), Rs 15 (2-5 km), Rs 20 (5-12 km), Rs 30 (12-21 km), Rs 40 (21-32 km) and Rs 50 (beyond 32 km).
“This is the first phase of fare hike to be implemented from May 10,” Dayal said. “The second phase will be implemented from October.”
DMRC Director K.K. Saberwal said the revision was necessary on account of increase in the input cost – staff salaries, cost of energy, repair and maintenance.
Dayal added that special discounts would be given to commuters on Sundays and national holidays.
Apart from that, 10 percent discount during non-peak hours would also be given. “This is to ensure that load during peak hours and non-peak hours is even.”
