1. In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 and nationwide lockdown, it has been decided to cancel all Metro services till 03rd May , 2020.
2. Citizens are requested to stay inside their houses , not to venture out unless it is absolutely necessary and take adequate precautions to stay safe .

Metro Railway observes Swachch Sambad
Metro Railway is observing “Swachchta Pakhwada-2019” from 16thSept ‘19 to 30thSept ‘19.
As part of this programme, “Swachch Sambad” is being observed in Metro Railway on 17.09.2019 and 18.09.2019. on 17.09.2019, a massive cleanliness drive was organized at various stations and in Metro premises.
Shri S.P.S. Chauhan, Additional General Manager, Shri Satyaki Nath, Principal Chief Operations Manager, other officers and staff of Metro Railway, members of Bharat Scouts and Guides/Metro Railway Unit, took part in ‘Shramdaan’ at Rabindra Sadan Metro Station and cleaned plastic waste in the station premises and approach to Metro stations.
Representatives of different religious organisations and trade union took part in this ‘Shramdaan’.
Shri S.P.S. Chauhan, Additional General Manager, Metro Railway thanked all the participants in this programme and sought co-operation of the commuters so that Metro’s cleanliness can be maintained throughout the year.
This cleanliness drive was also organized at all other Metro Stations.

Escalator glitch injures 5 in Kolkata metro
At least five persons were injured on Tuesday when an escalator at a Kolkata metro station malfunctioned, a metro official said. The accident happened at Kabi Subhash metro station in South Kolkata's New Garia area at 10.45 a.m., when the escalator, instead of moving upwards, jolted downwards. "We were on the escalator when it happened. Some people lost their balance and fell on each other. I received a minor injury and left the station after getting first aid from the metro staff," a passenger said. The Kolkata Metro authorities apologised for the accident and said the issue would be thoroughly probed. "This is an unexpected incident. It should not have happened. We are seriously looking into the issue and would try to make sure that it does not happen again," Indrani Banerjee, CPRO of Kolkata Metro Railway, said. "The company that installed escalators at all the metro stations is also given the responsibility for maintenance. The last servicing was done on May 14. We will check why the escalator malfunctioned in spite of that," she added.

62nd RAILWAY WEEK FUNCTION CELEBRATED IN METRO RAILWAY. PARK STREET METRO STATION HAS BEEN DECLARED, ‘THE BEST MAINTAINED METRO STATION’

The 62nd Railway Week, 2017 of Metro Railway, Kolkata was held today i.e. 10.04.2017 at Belgachia Auditorium of Metro Railway.
Shri M. C. Chauhan, General Manager, Metro Railway, Kolkata honoured the selected band of sincere and dedicated Staff & Officers who have rendered their meritorious services to the Railways. He also distributed Cash Awards, Medals and Certificates of merits to the employees of Metro Railway for their exemplary devotion to duty and meritorious services. As many as 89 individual and 142 Group Awards were distributed. In addition to this, 8 Metro employees have also been given special awards.
This year, PARK STREET METRO STATION WAS GIVEN A SPECIAL AWARD FOR BEST MAINTAINED STATION FOR CLEANLINESS AND OVERALL UPKEEPMENT.

STUDY VISIT COMMITTEE OF RAJYA SABHA ENQUIRES ABOUT THE EAST-WEST METRO PROJECT

A study visit of the committee on papers laid on the table, Rajya Sabha, was held today where Shri M.C. Chauhan, General Manager, Metro Railway and senior officers of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) attended. The meeting was chaired by Dr. C.P. Thakur, Chairman of the committee.
The committee members enquired about the progress of work of the East-West Metro project.
The KMRCL officials informed that the first phase from Salt Lake Sector V to Phoolbagan will be ready by June, 2018. Works on other projects are also progressing as per schedule.

Kolkata metro stations up for branding
You may be familiar with branding of football clubs like Kingfisher East Bengal or McDowell’s Mohun Bagan. Soon, Kolkata’s Metro Rail stations could be up for similar branding.
The Metro is the first in the country and records close to 7 lakh footfalls every day over its 27.2 km stretch.
As part of its attempt to cut losses by increasing non-fare revenues, Kolkata Metro is working on a policy to let corporates brand all its 24 stations --- from Noapara in the north of the city to Kavi Subhash in the south.
“The new scheme is called ‘Own Your Station’. Private companies, on payment of a sizeable sum, will get advertisement rights in metro stations and do a variety of branding exercises. They can also brand the stations with the name of the corporate prefixed or suffixed to the existing name,” said M C Chauhan, general manager of Kolkata Metro. Tenders would be floated soon, he revealed.
A few years ago, several prominent football clubs walked the same path to raise money. Thus, East Bengal (founded in 1920) was called Kingfisher East Bengal and Mohun Bagan (set up in 1889) was known as McDowell Mohun Bagan Athletic Club.
Kolkata Metro, the first underground mass rapid transit system in the country which started operations in 1984, is incurring massive losses. It is believed that for every Rs 100 earned, Kolkata Metro spends around Rs 265.
At Mamata Banerjee’s instance, during her stint as railway minister, several stations were renamed after eminent personalities of Bengal. Tollygunge station became Mahanayak Uttam Kumar. A few other stations, including Garia Bazar, Bansdroni and Birji were renamed Kavi Nazrul, Masterda Surya Sen and Shahid Khudiram respectively.
Metro officials expect that the new plan will offer attractive branding opportunities for corporates to get top of the mind recall as the metro stations are always prominent in the city’s millions of commuting public.
No other mass rapid transit system in the offers such an opportunity, they claimed.
Incidentally, a few new metro lines are under construction in Kolkata all of which are suffering time and cost overrun. If the same branding exercise is extended to all of them, companies will get a huge opportunity to project their products and services.

Metro Railway observed World Diabetes Day by organising free diabetes check up camps in association with IRIS Hospital (Multispeciality) at seven Metro Railway Stations viz. Kalighat, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Netaji, Master Da Surya Sen, Gitanjali, Kavi Nazrul and Kavi Subhash on 14.11.15 (today) from 0900hrs to 1300 hrs.
About 1400 passengers availed this facility at different Metro Stations by getting their Blood Sugar levels checked.

Kolkata: Metro Railway will receive its first pair of state-of-the-art air-conditioned rakes by July, 2016. These rakes are being built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai as per standards set by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). With the arrival of these two, the Kolkata metro will have 16 AC rakes in its fleet apart from 13 non-AC ones.
By the end of 2018, the metro is likely to receive 14 more AC rakes for which an order has been placed with CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co Ltd in China
“The two rakes being built by ICF now are much more advanced than those in service. They will have 3-phase alternating current motors and features like regenerative braking for substantial energy saving, stainless steel body, disc brakes, better passenger information system and CCTV for passenger security. The existing AC rakes with the metro were also supplied by ICF but the new design is a challenge. With metros coming up in several cities in the country, there will be a high demand for rakes. If advanced rakes can be built in India, there will month longer be any need to import them,” a metro official said.
The Kolkata metro is different from those in other cities. This is the only metro network that depends entirely on an electrified third rail rather than overhead equipment (OHE). When the Kolkata metro was designed more than 30 years ago, technology hadn’t evolved sufficiently to dig tunnels large enough to accomodate OHE. The third rail was the only option. Today, when most metros draw power from the OHE, few rake manufacturers have retained the technology to build rakes that draw power from a third rail. As the north-south corridor of Metro Railway is third-rail dependent, all ongoing projects in Kolkata (save for the E-W Metro) will use the same technology for integration.
“We will need many more rakes as and when the ongoing projects are completed. Take the Kavi Subhas-Airport (via Rajarhat) link. This will form a circular link with the N-S corridor once the stretch between Noapara and the airport is completed. Once the integration happens, demand for rakes will go up. Units like ICF are gearing up for this. Within the next few years as the ongoing projects get completed, one would get to see more advanced rakes in the network,” the official added.

Indian Railways for the first time has roped in an international train-maker to manufacture rakes for country's first underground mass transit system in Kolkata. Beijing-headquartered world's largest rolling stock company China Railway Rolling Stock Corp Ltd (CRRC) has bagged the order to manufacture 14 modern air-conditioned rakes (each rake constitutes eight coaches) for Kolkata Metro.
While Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) avails coaches from international coach makers such as Hyundai Rotem and Bombardier; its forerunner and the country's first underground mass transit system in Kolkata was so far dependent on the Railways' Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur (near Chennai) for rolling stock.
"These 14 rakes from China will start coming in two years," Kolkta Metro spokesperson R N Mahapatra told Business Standard.
While Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) avails coaches from international coach makers such as Hyundai Rotem and Bombardier; its forerunner and the country's first underground mass transit system in Kolkata was so far dependent on the Railways' Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at Perambur (near Chennai) for rolling stock.
The value of the order has not been shared by the railways, while a source claimed the order worth about Rs 800 crore. The ICF-manufactured AC-rakes (each rake of eight coaches) currently run by Kolkata Metro costs Rs 38 crore each.

However, roping in a manufacturer to supply rakes for Kolkata Metro has not been that easy. Officials said, It was in 2011, when the railways for the first time floated a global tender to procure rakes for Kolkata Metro. Apart from this chinese major, Spanish firm Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) showed interest and participated in the bidding along with some Indian firms.. But, Railways cancelled the bidding process mid-way and floated a fresh tender last year.
Apart from cost constraints, there were technical issues as well. "The manufacturers across the globe are more accustomed to the standard gauge. But the present Kolkata metro is a broad-gauge system, unlike metro in other parts of the country, which are of standard gauge. Hence, we had some difficulties to find a manufacturer,"
The rakes run now by Kolkata Metro are indigenously developed by ICF. Though some of them have been upgraded and some AC-rakes have been introduced in the last couple of years, there is technical limitation. Reports of metro service being affected due to techincal glitches with the rakes are common.The 14 new coaches are expected to be based on the latest technology and expected to address such issues.
The metro in Kolkata, with an average daily traffic of over half a million, currently runs 27 rakes, including 13 AC rakes. Apart from these 14 rakes from China, ICF too would be supplying two AC-rakes to Kolkata metro in a couple of years. By 2016, Kolkata Metro plans to run AC-rakes only.
