Now, priority seating for women, disabled on metro
Instructions to the effect will be put up on all trains.
Starting Sunday, Namma Metro trains will have priority seating for the differently abled, senior citizens, women and children. This will be provided on the twin seats in all coaches, totalling 20 seats in every train. Instructions to the effect will be put up on all trains.
U.A. Vasanth Rao, spokesperson for BMRCL, said while these seats would not be completely reserved for these categories of commuters, they would be priority seating, requesting other occupants to vacate the seats and make room for the needy during the journey, if any.
“We don’t want to make it mandatory and block these seats. We are requesting commuters to raise up to the spirit of the move and help those in need,” he said.

Coach starting from today i.e. 14thJanuary 2016 (ex . Secunderabad) and from 15th January 2016 (ex. Machilipatnam), as announced earlier.

Mumbai: Central Railway rolls out first train with modified seats
On December 25, the Central Railway (CR) rolled out the first train with modified seats that can supposedly accommodate 336 more commuters. However, this has also raised a new debate on technological improvements, which only can bring long-term relief to the 75 lakh daily commuters on Mumbai suburban rail network.
A certain section of railway officials feel the need to cut down the breadth and size of transformers that are installed inside motor coaches. Inside a 12-car local train, there are four motor coaches, each powering two trailer coaches. Sources said the motor coaches are like the heart of a train. “These motor coaches take up half the coach’s space. Technologically there is scope to lessen the width of the motor coach that would allow more people to be ferried,” said a senior CR official, on condition of anonymity.
The current format of trains with the modifications can accommodate 336 people more during peak hours. However, sources said that in case any changes are made in reducing the size of transformers — which they feel is possible — then it can easily provide accommodation for around 650 more people. The rail authorities also feel the need to improve the tonnage of wheels that carry these coaches. Presently, each coach can carry a weight of 16-20 tonnes. However, if the Railways bring in longitudinal seating — similar to Metro rail coaches — the carrying capacity of the wheels will have to go up to 25 tonnes. The CR authorities will also be modifying a second rake with 2+2 seating. Four coaches out of five coaches will be converted by the Matunga workshop by January or February 2016.

The Central Railway will soon introduce modified seating arrangement in the coaches of a local train to check the ever increasing deaths of commuters due to falling off the impossibly crowded suburban trains in the Mumbai region.
In one rake, all the three-seater seats adjacent to the doorway have been removed to create extra space for the standing passengers, Mahesh Kumar, Chief Workshop Manager of Matunga Workshop of CR, said on Tuesday.
The modified seating arrangements have been made following instructions of the committee formed by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu for ensuring passengers safety on suburban trains in Mumbai section.
According to the officer, trial run of the single rake will be conducted within 2-3 days and feedback will be sought from commuters.
Mumbai Suburban Coach3Earlier this month, the committee, comprising Members of Parliament and senior railway officials, was formed following the death of Dombivili youth Bhavesh Nakhate while travelling in a suburban train.
“In order to improve the safety of passengers commuting by suburban services, we have devised some innovative schemes in a single rake in the Matunga workshop,” said Narendra Patil, CR Chief PRO told reporters at the workshop after they had a look at the modified seating arrangements in five coaches of Siemen rake.
“Following the modifications, the total passenger capacity of this rake gets enhanced by 336 passengers,” he informed.
“No modifications have been done in the motor coaches, ladies compartments, handicapped & luggage compartments,” Kumar added.
“In this rake, two prototypes are being offered to the commuters of CR suburban services to solicit their opinion and decide the future course of action. In one coach, partial Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (metro) type seating arrangement has been done,” he said.
After removing three-seater seat adjacent to doorways, we have provided additional grab handles in each coach so that commuters should not feel discomfort, Kumar said.
The officer said the said work has been carried out in eight days by the dedicated team of Carriage Workshop, Matunga.

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 29:
Indian Railways booked an extra 10 per cent passengers between November 12 and 22, the period during which it allowed people to book tickets after first round of chart preparation by making cancelled seats available for booking.
“About 1.9 lakh passengers were booked between the first and second chart preparation during the ten day period. This represents a 10 per cent higher number of the total reserved tickets booked during the period,” shared a railway official.
Chart prep
Now, there are two rounds of chart preparation.
The first chart is prepared four hours before the scheduled departure, after which people are free to go online and book tickets subject to berth availability after cancellation. The second and final chart is readied 30 minutes before the actual departure.
Strict norms
This facility was introduced coinciding with the period when Railways put in a stricter ticket cancellation regime, resulting in higher cancellation charges.
Railway officials say that the easy ticket cancellation regime encouraged touts, resulting in high cancellations.
Huge cancellations
“We noticed that many of the tickets booked get cancelled at the last minute. Of the total confirmed passengers, only 81 per cent end up actually travelling. This indicates a higher level of tout activity,” said a railway source, pointing out that the airlines charge very high cancellation charges.
“Also, 25-30 per cent of ticket refund claims were fraudulent,” added the official.
Some 91 per cent of tickets were getting cancelled up to six hours before a train departure. Of the total cancellations, two-third tickets were cancelled 48 hours before the departure.
Indian Railways is yet to compile the cancellation data after the stricter rules were introduced.
