For the first time Iron Ore Fines loaded by Railfrom Veldurti (in Andhra Pradesh) of Hyderabad Division - Transported to M/s JSW Steel Siding, Salem
For the first time Iron ore fines has been loaded and transported by rail from Veldurti railway station in Kurnool district falling in Hyderabad Division to JSW steel siding, Salem in Tamil Nandu o­n 4th July, 2020. A total 45 Box N Wagons with approx weight of 2979 tonnes Iron ore fines have been loaded from Veldurti to Salem.
Veldurti in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh state is surrounded by Iron ore mines and the rail line is served by Hyderabad Division. Generally, the Iron ore fines which are treated as low rated version of Iron ore was being transported by Road to the nearest tiny iron and steel industries located in Kurnool district. Due to the marketing efforts of the Hyderabad Division officials, now, the iron ore fines are being offered for loading by Rail and transported to M/s JSW Steel Siding, Salem in Tamil Nadu state, which is also a new destination located around 624 kms from Veldurti.
With the support being extended by Railways, the freight Customers especially the owners of iron ore mines in and around Veldurti area are showing interest to transport the iron ore fine by Rail to other Southern and Northern parts of India. Transport Iron ore and other related mineral products by Rail is economically beneficial to Consignors as compared to other modes of transport. In addition, loading by Rail is a safest, fastest means for customers including hassle free handling. Besides, Railways is the better option for transportation of products in the during the current pandemic times.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR has appreciated the efforts of Officers and staff of Hyderabad Divisions in capturing new traffic in to SCR freight basket and loading to the new destinations from the division. General Manager advised the staff and officials to promote the new schemes and concessions introduced in recent pandemic times to enhance the freight loading. He suggested the consignors offering iron ore traffic to utilise the Rail transport and assured that Railways will give full support and encouragement in all aspects.

TELCO’s Vintage Steam Loco installed at Salem DRM’s office

The steam locomotive was manufactured by Telco in 1957 gives added attraction to the office of the Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division

SALEM: The installation of a vintage steam locomotive along with a second class metre gauge second class passenger compartment has provided added attraction to the Salem Railway Divisional office in the city.

The locomotive and the passenger coach has been installed on the office premises of the Salem Railway Division.

The steam locomotive was manufactured by the TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited (Telco) in 1957.

The locomotive was used to haul the passenger and goods trains in different routes in the past.

Even though this locomotive was withdrawn from service in 2003-04, it had its last journey, when it hauled a passenger train on a heritage run on the Tiruvarur – Tiruthuraipoondi route, just before the closing of the section for undertaking broad gauge conversion works in 2010.

Both the steam locomotive and the passenger coach were fetched by the Salem Railway Division from the Golden Rock Railway Workshop (GOC), thanks to Hari Shankar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem. The division spent about Rs. six lakh for transporting them to Salem from the GOC, according to official sources of the Salem Railway Division.

The sources said that the division has planned beautification of the major railway stations such as Coimbatore, Udhagamandalam, Coonoor stations by installing vintage locomotives on their premises shortly.

It may be recalled that Salem Railway Division has already installed a vintage MG diesel locomotive in front of the now closed entrance of the old Divisional Railway Manager Office building in the city in December last year.

Tata Motors is listed on the (BSE) Bombay Stock Exchange, where it is a constituent of the BSE SENSEX index, the National Stock Exchange of India, and the New York Stock Exchange. The company is ranked 226th on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s biggest corporations as of 2016.

On 17 January 2017, Natarajan Chandrasekaran was appointed chairman of the company.

Survey to identify Vulnerable spots on Nilgiri Mountain Railway Section

Salem: The Salem Railway Division has undertaken a survey of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) section to identify the vulnerable spots. The survey is undertaken due to frequent landslides there.

To undertake the survey, the operation of the NMR services in the Mettupalayam–Coonoor section has been cancelled for four days, said Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, while speaking to reporters in connection with the completion of the functioning of Salem Railway Division here on Monday.

Referring to the performance of the division in the financial front, Mr.Shubranshu said that it had registered 8.08 per cent increase in the passenger earnings in the first seven months of this fiscal. The passenger earnings stood at Rs.282.44 crore compared to Rs.261.33 crore during the corresponding period last year.

Ticket checking earnings registered 10.09 per cent – Rs.2.86 crore in the first seven months this year compared to Rs.2.59 crore during the corresponding period last year. The commercial department staff conducted as many as 18,619 surprise checks.

The catering earnings registered a 118 per cent increase – from Rs.84.62 lakh last year to Rs.1.85 crore. The parcel earnings increased to Rs.12.19 crore from Rs.12.07 crore last year. Mr.Shubhranshu said that Salem Division has installed train warning system in unmanned level crossing on trial basis in Coimbatore – Mettupalayam section.

He said that track doubling work between Omalur and Mettur Dam is the major work undertaken by the division. The Railway Board has already allotted funds and the work has already begun. It is proving a difficult terrain with rocks found in many areas. In some places adequate land has to be acquired. The work will be completed within a period of four years.

Referring to the future proposals, Mr. Shubranshu said the division has taken steps for promoting Coimbatore North Railway Station as a major terminus. Plans are on the anvil for operating trains from Coimbatore North station to decongest Coimbatore Junction. It has also been planned to extend the length of the platforms in Mettupalayam Railway Station so as to accommodate 24 coaches. Contract has already been awarded for the same.

2600 Tonnes of Imported Urea arrives in Salem by special Goods Train

Salem (SA): About 2,600 tonnes of imported urea for distribution to the farmers through the primary agricultural cooperative and credit societies in Salem and Namakkal districts arrived here by a special goods train on Sunday.

The stock from Oman, a Gulf country, was imported by the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) Limited.

TANFED

The entire stock which arrived in 42 goods wagons was handed over to the regional office of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation (TANFED), one of the members of the IFFCO, S. Arulmani, Field Officer, IFFCO, said.

To enable farmers commence farming operations without any delay, the TANFED shifted about 1,100 tonnes to the 400 and odd primary agricultural cooperative and credit societies in Salem and Namakkal districts through lorries on Sunday.

The rest of the stock will be supplied to the societies.

The rest 1,500 tonnes will be stocked in the godowns of the Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation in Salem and Namakkal, Mr. Arulmani said.

The urea stock supplied by the TANFED has to be sold to the farmers at the government rate of Rs. 270.50 paise per bag fixed by the government.

Railways proposes ‘parcel trains’ to transport garment consignments

Railways have come up with an offer to run special ‘parcel trains’ from Tirupur to Chennai once in three days to transport garment consignments to upcountry locations if the traders from Tirupur knitwear cluster are ready to bulk their cargoes for dispatch.

Representation

The proposal had come from the Railways side after the small-scale garment traders from Tirupur knitwear cluster started making representations to the Railways over the difficulties they face since Railways stopped the loading of cargoes in the parcel vans of those passenger trains that stop less than five minutes in Tirupur from the latter half of May.

Divisional Railway Manager (Salem division) Shubhranshu told The Hindu that since the Railway Board’s permission was not required to run special ‘parcel trains’, it could be operated as soon as the traders show their willingness to bulk their cargoes for dispatch. The trains would be either run as special trains comprising parcel vans alone or parcel vans would be tagged to regular passenger trains depending on the volumes of cargo bulked once in two or three days.

North-Eastern states

“We will also provide further connections from Chennai to various parts of the country, especially to Kolkata and North-Eastern states, as the traders who have represented their predicament were mostly worried over the transportation of cargoes to those eastern parts of the country,” he said.

On why the cargo loading in passenger trains that stop less than five minutes were terminated in Tirupur, the Divisional Railway Manager said that the stoppage time of majority of the passenger trains were shortened to two minutes at stations like Tirupur only to improve overall average speed.

Revenue

“Of course, revenue from cargoes get slightly affected because of the stoppage of cargoes loading into passenger trains that stop less than five minutes in Tirupur but at the same time Railways are committed to ensure punctuality to passengers,” he added.

Salem Division seek 4 DEMU rakes to operate trains in different routes for traveling public

Salem (SA): The Salem Railway Division has made a request to the Railway headquarters to allot four high horsepower Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rakes for operating trains in different routes. The request was following the overwhelming response from the travelling public for the recently introduced DEMU rakes with toilet facility in the Salem-Vridhachalam section.

Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, accompanied by K. Kamaraj, MP, (Kallidaikurichi), and a team of officials of the Salem Railway Division, listened to the grievances of the commuters in the Salem–Vridhachalam passenger train on Monday.

He said that the division had already submitted a proposal for operating DEMU trains in four sections: Salem – Thanjavur (via Namakkal, Karur and Tiruchi); Salem – Mettur Dam; Erode – Tiruchi and Erode – Vridhachalam. Following persistent demands, the DEMU trains for Thanjavur and Mettur dam from Salem would originate from Salem Town Railway Station. The DRM also promised to consider the request made by a passenger T. S. Sankaran of Shevvapet to operate the Salem – Yeshvantpur passenger from Salem Town station.

Mr. Subhranshu said that the DEMU train gives the speed of an express train at the fare of passenger trains. The operation of trains with DEMU rakes will enable in releasing the conventional coaches of the existing trains to augment the other long distance trains. Moreover, the locomotives could be used for operating more goods trains, he said.

The DRM said that the pay and use air-conditioned waiting hall in Coimbatore junction, where Rs. 15 is charged for an hour’s waiting, has been well received by the commuters. The Division has proposed to set up similar pay and use AC waiting halls in Erode and Salem junctions too shortly.

He also assured the commuters that their requests for increasing the speed of the Salem – Vridhachalam passenger will be favourably considered.

Mr. Kamaraj, Member of Parliament, who listened to the grievances of the commuters between Attur and Chinna Salem stations, later urged the DRM to accord priority for the execution of the project for rail link from Kallakurichi to Ulundurpet, which was originally proposed in 2006, but could not be taken up for want of funds. The MP said that the Chief Minister had already sanctioned the State Government’s share of Rs. 64.5 crore for the implementation of this project.

When Mr. Kamaraj pleaded for new halt stations in Servai and Kattukottai, the DRM explained to him that it can be taken up under the Shramdhan scheme for which the local body of the respective area has to send a proposal accepting to share the costs.

To the demand of the MP for construction of a foot over bridge at Chinna Salem station and stoppage of Puducherry – Mangalore Weekly Express at Pukravari station, Mr. Shubhranshu assured that necessary proposals for the same will be forwarded to the Railway headquarters for consideration. At Chinna Salem Railway Station, Mr. Kamaraj inspected the newly commissioned Automated Ticket Vending Machine. K. P. Damodaran, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, explained the functioning of the new facility.

Positive feedback

Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, and the other officials who listened to the grievances of the travelling public in the running Salem – Vridhachalam passenger train on Monday, received positive feedbacks about DEMU coaches.

Seating capacity

The passengers were happy about the increased seating capacity in the DEMU coaches and the row type cushion seats with ventilation.

Selvamani, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Thalaivasal, and A. Zafrullah, a businessman, both passengers of the train, said that travel in DEMU train was very comfortable.

Sezhian of Tamil Nadu Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarathadevi, Swami Vivekananda Devotees Trust, who echoed the same views, pleaded for replacing the conventional compartments of the Karaikal-Salem-Bangalore City passenger train with the DEMU rakes. N. Prabakaran, a private hospital staff, P. Chelladurai, LIC officer, and M. Chandrasekaran, an LIC agent, complained that people prefer to sit near the doors, due to which passengers find it difficult to enter and alight from the train.

A few passengers demanded extension of the DEMU train from Vridhachalam – Salem to Erode-Tirupur-Coimbatore.

Mr. Shubhranshu assured to consider all the pleas and forward the same to the Railway Headquarters.

Southern Railway start implementation of RHEDA Ballastless Track System at Salem Junction

Salem (SA): The work on converting the track on platform No. 4 of Salem Railway Junction into a modern track system commenced on Friday. The platform No. 4 has been closed for train operation from Friday.

Platform No.4 of Salem Junction is at present having the track with ballasts. This is being converted into a modern track system called RHEDA which is based on German technology. This technology is being used for tracks in elevated tracks and tunnels, using RHEDA ballastless sleepers and Vassloh state-of-the-art elastic fastening fittings. The new type of track will enable handling heavy loads and operating ‘passing through’ trains at higher speeds, without compromising on track safety.

Since similar work that was taken up on Platform No.5 of the Salem Junction has been completed, all the trains that were drawn and dispatched from Platform No.4, will now be received and dispatched from Platform No.5.

According to a press release, the new track laying work, undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs. 7.76 crore, is likely to be completed tentatively by May 24.

The new track at Platform No. 4 will be 540 metres. The track will be able to handle trains at a maximum speed of 50 kmph as against the speed of 15 kmph maximum permissible speed in the conventional track system.

The works are being carried out under the supervision of C. Kannan, Deputy Chief Engineer and P. Williams Jai, Executive Engineer of the Construction Wing of Southern Railway, Salem, the release added.

Now,Salem Railway Junction with Solar Power Plant

Salem (SA): The commissioning of the 3.25 Kilo Watts Power (kWp) solar power plant at the Salem Railway Junction is expected to bring down the dependence of the Railways on the traditional energy to a considerable extent.

The solar plant set up atop the newly extended building of the Salem Railway Junction was inaugurated by A. K. Agarwal, General Manager in-charge, Southern Railway, in the presence of Shubranshu, Divisional Railway Manager and V. Panneerselvam, MP, on Tuesday.

The plant has been set up under the Solar Mission of Indian Railways Programme at an outlay of Rs. 3.97 lakh. This is on-grid type plant and will provide power to entire new extended station building, unreserved ticket booking counters, information centre etc, except air-conditioners.

Mr. Shubhranshu said that the solar plant will provide totally green source of energy. Power generation is done at the point of consumption, due to which it will register zero running cost. The capacity of the PV panel is 3.25 Kilo Watts Power and the plant will generate 13 – 15 units per day.

The 13 solar panels have been setup in the shadow free area so that they get direct sunlight throughout the day.

This is the second major solar project implemented by the Salem Division. Only recently, the Salem division commissioned its first green power station at Attur Railway Station to harness green and renewable energy.

The Salem Division has also installed solar powered water pumps in Perugamani Railway station near Tiruchi.

The Salem Division is according priority for generating solar energy in a big way. It has planned to setup a 100 KV solar panel in the divisional office to tap renewable energy resources.

The project will be executed at Rs. One crore in the next few months, Mr. Shubhranshu said.

The Salem division has proposed to commission solar power plant in a phased manner in major railway stations such as Coimbatore, Coimbatore North, and Erode.

The division has also proposed to convert all the manned level crossings in Salem division solar powered shortly, so that there will be no need for dependence on power for their functioning.

Mr. Agarwal appreciating the Salem Railway Division’s initiative of according priority for solar power plants, said that the Railways will fully back the division’s all efforts in this direction.

Rat bites passenger on Chennai-bound train, authorities fail to provide him first aid

CHENNAI: A passenger suffered an injury on his hand after a rat bit him onboard the Salem-Chennai Express train in the wee hours of Saturday.

N Venkatachalam, who boarded the train at Salem on Friday night, allegedly did not receive first aid and medical assistance though he alerted travelling ticket examiner (TTE) soon after the incident.

However, the TTE gave him some painkiller tablets and allegedly forced him to mention that he had been provided first aid in his complaint to the railways.

A railway police official said that the passenger was promised medical assistance at Vridhachalam but it did not come. He had to go to a hospital when the train reached Egmore in the morning as the railway authorities did not help him.
