2) Shri Naresh, Male,. Aged 20 from Alandur, Chennai, admitted in GH, Royapettah.
3) Shri Vijay Kumar, Male, Aged 19 from St. Thomas Mount, Chennai, admitted in GH, MMC.
4) Shri Srivatsan, Male, Aged 18 admitted in GH, MMC.
5) Shri Yashar, Male, Aged 23 from Chrompet, Chennai admitted in GH, MMC.
6) Unknown Male, who got injured, got treatment and left by himself from Saidapet GH

Regarding the incident, it is noticed that there was no infringement as per Railway rule. However, in view of the unfortunate incident, the matter is being also studied by the Railway to identify further steps to be taken to avoid such incidents
General Manager, Southern Railway has advised to depute additional RPF and GRP officials to guide the passengers
Passengers are requested to avoid travelling o­n footboard and avoid hanging outside the train risking their own life and lives of co-passengers. Press and Media are requested to please help in spreading this safety and awareness message.

In an unfortunate incident over Chennai division
At St.Thomas Mount station the shoulders bags of male commuters travelling o­n footboard hit against the Railway cement fence and 10 passengers have fallen down at 8.25 hrs from the running train (T.No.40701 – Chennai Beach – Tirumalpur Passenger) between Km17/2 – 17/4.
Immediately Govt Railway Police Personnel, Mambalam and Railway Protection Force Personnel, St Thomas Mount, attended the spot. 6 injured passengers were rushed by 108 Ambulance to Government Hospitals at Royapettah and GH Chennai. 3 have been reported as dead o­n the spot. o­ne Passenger expired o­n the way to the Hospital.
2 injured passengers are availing treatment at GH/Royapettah, 3 at GH/Central. 1 passenger left GH Saidapet after treatment. Bodies of 3 deceased passengers at Royapettah and o­ne at GH/Saidapet. Identity of the dead/injured is awaited.
Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, and other Railway officials rushed to the spot. Railway Officials also deputed to the hospitals to render assistance.

Train Services in Howrah-Kharagpur section of South Eastern Railway have been affected today (22.06.18) due to public agitation blocking all lines from 07.40 hrs at Mecheda when a person died after being knocked down by 38301 Santragachi-Mecheda EMU Local.
Repercussion o­n Train Services:
Ø22897/22898 Howrah-Digha-Howrah Kandari Express has been cancelled both from Howrah and Digha
Ø36 EMU Locals have been cancelled
Ø10 Mail/ Express trains got detained at various stations of Howrah–Kharagpur section
Ø3 Passenger Trains have also been detained at various stations
Normalcy of train services has been restored when the agitation was called off at about 11:55 hours.

Front trolley of Locomotive of Train No. 12224 Ernakulam – Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Duronto Express was derailed at 15:03 hrs today between Sawantwadi Road and Zarap stations of Ratnagiri region. No casualties or injuries have been reported.
Accident Relief Medical Van (ARMV) and Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) has departed from Ratnagiri and Verna respectively and will reach  site  shortly  for relief and restoration. Konkan Railway officials have also rushed to the site.
Passenger carrying trains are likely to be regulated.  Details of the same would be given in a short while.

Inconvenience caused to the public is deeply regretted.

RCT TO HOLD SPECIAL BENCH FOR COMPENSATION CLAIMS OF UTKAL EXPRESS ACCIDENT VICTIMS
Hon’ble Chairman of Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT) has ordered for the Special Benches of Railway Claims Tribunals to inquire into and decide the compensation claims of the victims of the recent Kalnga Utkal Express & Kaifiyat Express accidents so that compensation can be handed over immediately without any delays.

18477 Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express was derailed on 19.08.2017 and 12225 Azamgarh-Delhi Kaifiyat Express on 23.08.2017 in Uttar Pradesh. The Special Benches will be held at RCT Headquarters at 13/15 Mall Road, Delhi and also at five other places viz. Ghaziabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar from 11thSeptember to 15thSeptember, 2017 from 1100hrs (11.00A.M) to 1500hrs (03.00P.M).

Accordingly,RCT/Bhubaneswarwill hold Special Benche atOdishaForestDevelopmentCorporationLimitedBuilding (2ndFloor),PlotNumber-A/84,KharavelaNagar,Unit-III,Bhubaneswar-1as per the timing and date mentioned above.

The person who has sustained the injury or suffered any loss, any agent authorised by the victim on his behalf, guardian of the victim in case of minor or the dependant of the deceased resulted from the above accidents can file the application for compensation with all relevant identity proofs in original like Aadhar Card, Voter Identity Card, Ration Card, Family Register, Resident proof including other relevant documents.

The Puri-Haridwar Utkal Express derailed in Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district on Saturday, killing 20 and injuring over 90 people.
KHATAULI, UTTAR PRADESH:  Four railway officials have been suspended over the train accident on Saturday that left over 22 dead and injured over 200 in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district. Three others have been transferred and one has been sent on leave. Thirteen coaches of the Puri-Haridwar Utkal Express ran off the tracks around 5:45 pm in Khatauli, about 100 km from New Delhi. The move came on a day that Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu assured prompt action over the accident that appeared to have been caused due to negligence.

1.Railways has taken action against eight officials over the accident. While a Senior Divisional Engineer, Assistant Engineer, Senior Section Engineer and a Junior Engineer have been suspended, the Chief Track Engineer of the Northern Railway has been transferred. Member (Engineering) in the Railway Board, Northern Railway General Manager and Divisional Regional Manager (Delhi) have been sent on leave, the Railways said.
2.Over 22 people have been killed so far, Anand Kumar, a senior police officer in UP told news agency ANI. The officer also ruled out any terror angle in the accident. "Prima facie and on the basis of inquiry done so far by ATS (anti-terror squad), there is no evidence of any terror outfit involved in the accident," he said. 
3.An audio clip of an unverified telephonic conversation, apparently between two railway employees, that hints at "negligence" as cause of the accident will also be probed, he added.
4.Sources in the engineering division of the Railways claim that they had warned the Khatauli station authorities of repair work being carried out on the tracks. They also claim that they had asked for movement of trains to not be allowed on the stretch for 20 minutes till the tracks were restored.
5."We had no knowledge of technical problems," Rajinder Singh, Station Superintendent, Khatauli told NDTV yesterday, saying they were unaware of maintenance work being carried out on the tracks.
6.Locals claim human error may have led to the tragedy. Jagat Ram, one of the residents of the house that was damaged when the train crashed into it, had earlier told NDTV that parts of the rail track in the area were being repaired for two days before the day when the accident happened. Locals suspect that the driver of the Utkal Express was not informed about the repair work.
7.A first information report (FIR) has been filed for causing death by negligence, mischief, and destruction of railway property.
8.The train had left Puri in Odisha on Friday evening and was scheduled to arrive in Haridwar in Uttarakhand on Sunday. "It was running at a speed of about 100 kmph when the accident took place," a top Railways official RN Singh said. Six of the derailed coaches were damaged severely.
9.Rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF and various divisions of the police worked with gas cutters and cranes to find survivors from the badly-mangled coaches. Rescue operations ended in the early hours on Sunday.
10.The Railways has announced a compensation of Rs. 3.5 lakh for the family of those killed, Rs. 50,000 for those seriously injured and Rs. 25,000 for people with minor injuries. State governments of Odisha and Uttar Pradesh have also announced compensation for the victims.

Central Railway (CR) has unveiled India's first air conditioned rail ambulance that is designed to rush for the relief of injured passengers during the vital 'golden hour' after a rail disaster. According to a report of Hindustan Times, this rail ambulance is equipped with several medical facilities and the basic treatment can be provided to at least 50 people at a time. The ambulance, which will be stationed at Kalyan, was made by redesigning an AC coach used for passenger service.

According to the report, an official said the ambulance will prove helpful when transporting organs from one state to another for transplants. A railway ‘green corridor’ will help deliver the donated organ to the destination sooner than on road, without causing much trouble to people and traffic, the official said.

Here are top 5 things to know about India’s first air conditioned rail ambulance:

1. It is a four-coach fully AC ambulance, equipped with health care facilities.

2. The idea for such a facility came after 19 passengers died and around 145 got injured after the Diva-Sawantwadi train derailed between Nagothane and Roha stations in Maharashtra's Raigad district in May 2014. 

3. As many as 50 people can be transported and treated using this air conditioned rail ambulance.

4. Designed at the rail workshop at Matunga in Mumbai, the vehicle is suited for transporting accident victims to hospital in a short time.

5. The coaches are aesthetically designed and house an operation theatre to carry out minor surgeries like cataract and can provide emergency treatment to accident victims

The derailment of Train No 12987 Sealdah-Ajmer express took place near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh at Kanpur- Tundla section between Rura and Maitha Stations at 0522 hrs. The Accident site falls under Allahabad Division of North Central Railways. 15 coaches including (13 sleeper ie S1-S13 coaches and two general coaches) derailed. Accident Relief Train and Accident Relief Medical Van from Allahabad, Kanpur and Tundla rushed to site. Ambulances were arranged. NDRF team also joined in Relief and Rescue.

As per available information, 61 sustained injuries in this unfortunate incident which included 2 grievously injured. They were admitted to hospitals. 

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhu announced an enhanced ex-gratia payment of Rs. 50 Thousand for grievous injuries and Rs.25 Thousand in case of simple injuries. Statutory inquiry into this incident has been ordered to be conducted by Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Northern Circle, under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Under the direction of Minister of Railway, Member Rolling Stock, Railway Board, Shri Ravinder Gupta and Member Engineering, Railway Board Shri AK Mittal also rushed to the accident site.

Stranded passengers of the affected trains were later cleared towards their respective destinations. They were also provided with drinking water and snacks at Kanpur station by the Railway Administration.  Due to this accident, the traffic on Kanpur – Etawah Section has been affected and Railways had to divert, short-terminate and cancel certain trains passing through this Section which are being notified by the respective Zonal Railways.

Senior Railway Officers of Allahabad division, North Central Railway Zone reached and supervised Relief and Rescue. Helpline Numbers were setup at the important stations along the route of the train.

At least 63 people were killed and more than 100 injured as 14 coaches of the Indore-Patna Express ran off the tracks near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh this morning.
The incident took place at around 3 am near Pukhrayan, about 100 km from Kanpur, at a time when most of the passengers were asleep. Television images showed several severely mangled coaches piled up against each other.
Northern Central Railways spokesperson Vijay Kumar said that doctors and senior railway officials reached the spot soon after the accident and rescue operations were underway. The cause of the accident was not known immediately.
Daljeet Singh Choudhary, a senior police officer, told NDTV that heavy machinery including gas cutters were being used to rescue trapped passengers. "It is a delicate situation," he said.
Most of the casualties are reported from two coaches which are severely damaged, officials said. Stranded passengers were being taken to a nearby station from where a special train will eventually take them to Patna.
 Several coaches of the train were severely mangled.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the National Disaster Response Force has been also been sent in.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted about the accident saying an inquiry had been ordered into the incident and announced compensation for the victims. "Strictest possible action will be taken against those who could be responsible," he said.

IIT Kharagpur scientists are developing tools so your train travel can be far safer than what it is today

IIT Kharagpur has another feather in its cap as scientists have successfully tested a new tool for electronic railway interlocking system which prevents trains from colliding into each other. This means train journeys could soon be far safer than they are today. 

Through its Research Design and Standards Organisation, the Railways had awarded 12 research projects to the IIT’s Centre for Railway Research recently in the area of analysis and design of rolling stock, infrastructure, operations and maintenance. The breakthrough has come in one of these projects. 

Professor Pallab Dasgupta, lead researcher of the project, said since errors in the application logic of interlocking systems may have catastrophic consequences, this development has potential to minimize the chance of such errors. The tool has already been successfully tested in several railway yards, Dasgupta claimed. The Indian Institute of Technology researchers said this project has the potential to be further extended to study and develop optimum traffic operation plans, alternative plans for emergencies. 

Meanwhile, several of the products and technologies are being field tested at various facilities of Indian Railways apart from lab testing at IIT Kharagpur. The next step would be to further develop the products and technologies with an industrial partner for production, the experts said. 

Innovations are not a new thing at IITs. Recently, a couple of software have been developed in IIT Kharagpur aimed at revolutionizing the way in which the disabled persons can cope up with day-to-day activities. In simple terms, buying vegetables from the market or composing poetry will just be a touch on the smart device away. 

Softwares ‘Akash Baani’ and ‘Sanyog’ will help them express their feelings by touching icons on the screen, which will then create sentences, and further be translated into voice messages.

DERAILMENT OF 11078 JHELUM EXPRESS

In an unfortunate incident the 11078 Jammu Tawi-Pune Jhelum Express has been derailed by 10 Coaches (One Pentry, B-5 and S1 to S8) at 3.10 hrs this morning between Phillor and Ladowal stations of Jallandhar-Ludhiana section of Ferozpur Division of Northern Railway.
03 passengers received minor injuries in the incident and they have already been provided with the necessary medical treatment. The Medical Van and Accident Relief Train have reached at the derailment site. Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozpur with team of senior officers have already reached at site. The General Manager Northern Railway Sh. A.K. Puthia has proceeded for the site. The local administration has also been supportive.
The front intact portion of 11078 Jhelum Express i.e. Engine and 08 Coaches has been moved to the next station after accommodating all the passengers for arranging their o­nward journey. The rear 06 unaffected Coaches have been moved to Phillor. Buses are also being arranged for passengers willing to continue their journey by bus.
Due to derailment, four trains have been cancelled which are :-

Four killed, including one American, and 48 injured as passenger train derails in Spain

A Passenger train in Spain's northwestern Galicia region derailed Friday, killing at least four people, including an American tourist, and injuring 48 others who were taken to hospitals, authorities said. 

The Galician regional government said the accident occurred at 9:30 a.m. in Porrino, about 280 miles northwest of Madrid. The three-car train was travelling between Spain and neighboring Portugal.

The regional government's president, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, told reporters at the scene that the train's Portuguese engineer and Spanish ticket collector were among the dead, as well as two passengers.

One of the passengers was a U.S. tourist who died on the train, according to an official at the regional government who spoke on condition of anonymity because she wasn't authorized to identify herself by name. She said she had no further details about the American victim.

A 23-year-old local man died in hospital, the regional government said in a statement.

The statement said that 27 injured passengers were still in emergency care at midafternoon. The injured were mostly Spanish and Portuguese but also included people from the United States, Germany and Latin America, the statement said without providing further details.

The train was approaching the Porrino station on a straight stretch of track when it derailed. The front car came completely off the track and smashed into an electricity pylon next to the line, crushing the engineer's cab and leaving the car leaning to one side. The back two cars were partly off the tracks. Emergency services dispatched doctors on helicopters to the scene.

The train was carrying 63 passengers, state rail company Renfe said. It left Vigo at 9:02 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Porto in neighboring Portugal two hours later. It belonged to Portuguese rail company Comboios de Portugal.

The Adif railway infrastructure company said it has opened an investigation.

Indian Railways is implementing the following measures to minimize the accidents on railway tracks specially in Mumbai:-
Announcements are being made through PA system and also given wide publicity in mass media by concerned department about the impending dangers and resultant penalties.
Railway Protection Force/ Railway Protection Special Force staff are deployed at various locations to check trespassing.
Hooters are blown by RPF at the suspect trespassing points to prevent trespassing.
“Anmol Jeevan’-a concerted effort by School children, NGOs, RPF and commercial departments- is organized at regular intervals for the awareness of passengers.
Drives named “Track Suraksha Jeevan Raksha” by RPF and “Naya Jeevan Nayi Aasha” by Commercial department have been launched over suburban section of Mumbai with the help of NGOs, scouts and Lion Club etc.
Unauthorized entry and exit points are being blocked.
Necessary signboards/posters regarding “Do not cross railway line” “Don’t travel on roof top/foot board” are in place on platforms/ station premises, for the awareness of passengers.
Regular drives are conducted against trespassers under the provisions of the Railways Act, 1989.

Railways bank upon third eye to check collision on tracks

New Delhi: Indian Railways is getting a third eye to look out for obstruction on track ahead to prevent collision or mishap. India will be the first country in the world to use radar and laser based terrain imagining vision system called ‘Tri-Netra’ in railways for monitoring obstructions on tracks. The device will also be able to record all the events on the tracks ahead in for post‐event analysis.

The Ministry of Railways has invited global tender from companies to design, develop and implement Tri-Netra for locomotives in a phased manner. The idea has been mooted by Member Mechanical Railway Board Hemant Kumar and the cost will be decided after companies present their technical bids next week.

Three companies – two from Israel and one UK have shown interests in designing the equipment that can give loco pilot (drivers) vision to see images of objects on track ahead in a range of 1 kilometer on a display panel inside the locomotive.

“It is for the first time that infra red and laser technology is used by any railways in the world to prevent collision. None of the companies have this kind of technology avialable now but they have approached us that they can design it for us,” said sources in the railway ministry, adding the technology so far is only used in combat activities.

Locomotive drivers, while driving the trains, rely purely on visual clues and visual images besides signal to look out for obstruction on track ahead to prevent collision or mishap.The objective is to enable the locomotive driver to visualize and warn about such infringing objects from a reasonable far away distance so as to enable them to apply brakes sufficiently in advance to stop the train.

The technology will be able to do thermal imaging and give picture of obstruction like trees, boulders, humans, stranded vehicles, moving object like another train. As per the last NCRB data, nearly 27,000 people died in train accidents in 2014 with majority of deaths due to fall from trains/collision of trains with people on tracks.

“It is for the company to decide the technology they adopt that meets the end result of pre‐warning the locomotive driver well in advance and give an audio‐visual warning on an ergonomically placed console. The company will quote the price as there is no existing technology presently used anywhere in the world,” said sources.

The equipment will have all the necessary cameras, antennas, sensors for visualizing the track ahead in the direction of motion which shall be mounted on either ends of the locomotive. The display should not distract the driver with flashes, alarms during normal condition but warm them about images likely to pose danger in red colour.

Specifications and design of critical components shall also be approved by RDSO (Research Designs & Standards Organisation), railways research arm, before they are fitted.

204 Rail Accidents due to Failure of Staff: Report

New Delhi: Over 200 rail accidents out of the total 292 were caused due to failure of railway staff in the last few years with action being taken against 542 employees and penalties imposed in over 500 cases.

As per the findings of inquiry committees including prima-facie causes, out of a total of 292 consequential train accidents, excluding mishaps which occurred at unmanned level crossings, from 2012-13 to January 2016, 204 accidents have been attributed to failure of railway staff, according to Railway Ministry data.

Admitting negligence of railway staff as one of the causes behind many train accidents, a senior Railway Ministry official said, “All consequential train accidents are investigated by Commissioner Railway Safety (CRS). On the basis of these inquiry reports, disciplinary action is taken against the staff found guilty and penalties are imposed on the staff.”

A total of 542 employees have been taken up for disciplinary action and penalties imposed in 528 cases.

The official said safety is accorded the highest priority by railways and all possible steps are undertaken on a continual basis to prevent accidents and to enhance safety.

These include replacement of over-aged assets, adoption of suitable technologies for upgradation and maintenance of track, rolling stock, signalling and interlocking systems and safety drives among others.

He said railways has also adopted new technologies such as train protection warning system (TPWS), train collision avoidance system (TCAS) as a means of automatic train protection on pilot-basis on selected routes.

An unfortunate accident occurred this morning(8.12.2015) between Palwal-Asaoti stations o­n Northern Railway at 08.25 hrs involving Train No. 12171 Lok Manya Tilak-Haridwar Express and Train No. 64055 Palwal-Ghaziabad EMU trains. Unfortunately, the Driver of the EMU Train Shri Yashpal lost his life in the accident and the Guard of the 12171 Shri B.B.Gupta was injured in the accident and admitted in trauma centre nearby. All passengers of both the trains are safe.

The Railway officers and officials have rushed to the site for restoration and relief measures. Accident Relief Van and medical teams was also dispatched to the site for medical relief and assistance.

Rail minister Suresh Prabhu has called for implementation of a Zero Accident Mission

The rail ministry’s plan to seek around Rs 1 lakh crore (Rs 1 trillion) funding for the Special Railway Safety Fund from the finance ministry in response to the recent spurt in the number of train accidents seems to have missed out on a crucial affliction — the need to strengthen the operational staffing issues.

The rise in the cases of derailments of late has come at a time the brass at the railway board is gripped in an unusual setting — the absence of a full-time Member (Traffic), who looks after safety related aspects, for more than seven months since February.

Rail minister Suresh Prabhu has called for implementation of a zero accident mission as part of which the ministry will seek the mammoth Rs 1 lakh crore funding for the SRSF.

This includes around Rs 40,000 crore (Rs 400 billion) for elimination of Unmanned Level Crossings alone, which are responsible for more than a half of all the deaths occurring in train accidents.

A similar fund to bolster safety infrastructure was introduced by the government in 2001 to wipe out the accumulated arrears of renewal of over-aged assets including tracks, bridged, signalling gears and rolling stock.

It was created with an initial corpus of Rs 17,000 crore (Rs 170 billion) of which Rs 12,000 crore (Rs 120 billion) had come from the finance ministry as dividend free capital.

The fund was closed in 2008 with its balance of Rs 597 crore (Rs 5.97 billion) merged in the Depreciation Reserve Fund.

Such funding initiatives would require parallel efforts on revamping the railway board for their success.

Currently, additional member-traffic transportation Kundan Sinha is looking after the role of member traffic as additional charge since 1st August.

Before him, additional member-commercial Ajay Shukla held the post of member traffic between February and July.

The reason being, there are not enough general managers from the Indian Railway Traffic Service with the required level of experience at present.

A senior rail ministry official said there is availability of GMs from the traffic service but they lack the required number of years of experience for becoming member-traffic.

“This is just a technical issue.

“It is not a problem as even an officer with additional charge of member-traffic works like a full-fledged member-traffic,” he said.

He added safety-related matters are reported to both the member-traffic and the chairman of the board.

“But actually safety issues are addressed by all the departments including engineering, electrical and mechanical etc.”

At a media interaction last week, that followed rail minister Suresh Prabhu’s emergency meeting with all the GMs of zonal railways on safety, Railway Board chairman A K Mittal had said the overall number of accidents has come down by 25 per cent to 54 in the current fiscal so far.

“But this does not mean the situation is okay.

“We are analysing all the accidents to take corrective action.

“The analysis shows 40 per cent of these accidents were avoidable, meaning they occurred due to system failure including both equipment and employee,” he said, adding the margin to address issues of delays in taking corrective action has shrunk due to high capacity utilisation of the network.

He also said funds were a constraint for system improvement but that issue is being addressed now.

Post the GMs meeting, where Prabhu asked GMs to pull up efforts on safety improvement, the ministry decided to seek assistance from the finance ministry for the SRSF.

This comes within months of the presentation of the rail budget on 26 February in Parliament.

The GMs meeting had followed two train accidents within a day and at least eight derailments in the past nine months of 2015.

Earlier this month, at least 42 people were injured after six coaches of the Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed in Tiruchi near Poovanaur district in Tamil Nadu.

Also, two trains had derailed within minutes at the same spot near Harda in Madhya Pradesh in August claiming 29 lives.

The year 2015 has so far seen eight train accidents because of derailments.

Indian Railways likely to provide Accident Insurance to Train Passengers

New Delhi: The railway ministry is working towards providing accident insurance to passengers, officials said on Wednesday, a move which could see the end of complex procedures for payment of compensation by the public sector giant which ferries around 23 million people daily.

Senior officials in the ministry said railway minister Suresh Prabhu has proposed farming out the job to public sector insurance companies.

“The New India Assurance Company has agreed to partner with the Indian Railways. In all likelihood, a policy statement on the matter will be made by the railway minister in his upcoming budget speech,” a senior ministry official said.

As of now, travel on the Indian Railways’ 64,500-km network is not insured and compensation to accident victims or their families is given on the basis of decrees from 21 benches of the Railways Claims Tribunal spread across the country.

Railways ministers also award compensation amounts out of their discretionary funds.

Officials admitted that the present system was riddled with corruption.

“Compensation claims departments across different railway zones have turned into breeding grounds for corrupt practices on account of the involvement of unscrupulous agents and local mafia, while families of genuine accident victims are left to fend for themselves. The existing system serves nobody except those with vested interests,” the official said.

The Indian Railways – whose daily passenger number equals the populations of Australia and New Zealand put together – had also faced allegations of being insincere and lax in payment of compensation.

Following a public interest litigation filed by two advocates – Setu Niket and Isha Majumdar – the Delhi high court last month directed the Railways to raise the compensation amounts, last reviewed in 1997.

If implemented, the move would mean big business opportunities to insurance companies.

Even if only the estimated 1.2 million reserved category passengers are insured, the business could be worthwhile for the insurance companies, ministry officials said.

“To begin with, the insurance surcharge on passenger tickets is likely to be made optional,” an official added.
