Due to Line Block to facilitate engineering works between Ponneri – Elavur in Chennai – Gudur section, changes will be made in suburban train services from 03rd September, 2017 to 28th September, 2017 except on wednesdays as detailed below.
1. Train No.42017 MMC – Gummidipundi EMU, scheduled to leave MMC at 11.35 hrs., will be partially cancelled between Ponneri – Gummidpundi. The train will run from MMC to Ponneri only. After reaching Ponneri, the rake will be regulated / delayed there for 1 hour and 15 minutes and then will leave as a passenger special train to Gummidipundi.
2. Train No.42019 MMC – Gummidipundi EMU, scheduled to leave MMC at 12.20 hrs., will be partially cancelled between Ponneri – Gummidpundi. The train will run from MMC to Ponneri only. After reaching Ponneri, the rake will be regulated / delayed there for 35 minutes and then will leave as a passenger special train to Gummidipundi.
3. Train No.42413 MMC – Sulurpeta EMU, scheduled to leave MMC at 12.40 hrs., will be regulated/ delayed at Minjur for 20 minutes and reach Sulurpeta late by 20 minutes.
4. Train No.42414 Sulurpeta – MMC EMU, scheduled to leave Sulurpeta at 15.10 hrs., will leave Sulurpeta late by 15 minutes.

Signal turns red as velocity goes up
High wind velocity in Pamban, Mandapam and adjoining areas hit train services on the Pamban rail bridge, connecting the Rameswaram island to the mainland by rail on Friday.
Two passenger trains and Chennai-bound Rameswaram Express suffered delay of more than five hours as they were stranded at Mandapam, Pamban and Rameswaram after failing to get signal to pass through the bridge due to high wind velocity, official sources said.
The Rameswaram – Tiruchi Passenger was approaching the bridge from Pamban side around 2.30 p.m. when the signal turned red automatically as the velocity of the wind exceeded the permissible limit of 58 km per hour, they said.
The train was allowed to cross the bridge around 7.15 p.m. after the wind paved way, the sources said.
Delay
The Madurai – Rameswaram Passenger, which was stopped at Mandapam Railway Station after it reached the station at 2.55 p.m. was allowed to proceed to the island after 7.30 p.m., the sources said.
The Chennai Rameswaram Express (16102), which left Rameswaram at 5 p.m. and detained at Pamban Railway Station left around 8 p.m., the sources said. The Chennai Sethu Express (22662) left Rameswaram around 8.30 p.m. after a delay of half an hour, they said.

Railways Mega App 'HindRail'
From June, railways will answer all queries on one mega app
Come June, all train travel-related queries will be answered through one mega application, likely to be named HindRail, which incorporates in it most of the existing railways’ apps.
The Indian Railways is developing the new app to work as a full-fledged inquiry system providing information on arrivals, departures, delays, cancellations, platform number, running status and berth availability.
Besides, it will also offer booking of taxis, porter services, retiring rooms, hotels, tour packages, e-catering and other travel-related needs.
The Railways will offer all these services on a revenue-sharing model with the service providers.
Thus, the app will serve as a revenue-earning platform for the public transporter and is slated to have a business potential Rs 100 crore every year.
The Railways often finds itself flooded with complaints from passengers about not getting reliable information on train running status, especially when they run late.
Mohd Jamshed, Railway Board member (traffic), acknowledges that there are problems in disseminating accurate information on delays. But, he says, the new app will address all these issues.
“The new app will be launched in June and it will not only give you information, you can also track trains through it,” he said.
Currently, there are several apps operated by the Indian Railways which provide various kinds of services. These include the CMS App for complaint management system.
The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app provides inquiry facility. There are apps for booking reserved and unreserved tickets. There is another app managed by the IRCTC for the e-catering services.
All these will be integrated in the proposed app.
Asked about the possible name for app, Jamshed said, “We have to give a suitable name for it but it has not been decided as yet.”
However, it is reliably learnt the name ‘HindRail’ is being considered for the new app among other suggested names such as MeriRail, ERail, MyRail and Rail Anubhuti.

It wasn't exactly TGIF for Mumbai this morning. Local trains were running nearly 20 minutes late because in Mumbai's neighbouring Thane district, angry commuters blocked the tracks because trains running into the heart of the city- the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus or CST, the main station - were delayed.
Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu appealed for cooperation as the police went to the location of the protests to clear the tracks.
The morning's demonstration began at about 5:30 am when a train pulled in 20 minutes later at the Badlapur station in Thane. Passengers stepped onto the tracks, cutting them off for trains.
By 11 am - much after rush hour ended, the trains were back on schedule.

For the past 20 years, K Madhavan has been commuting between Chennai and Trichy on the Rockfort Express. He laps up every update about trains, talks of double lines being laid and the infrastructure planned but fails to understand why, despite the train reaching 30 minutes before time regularly, the schedules haven't changed.
Out of the 495km between Chennai and Madurai, more than 80% of the line has been doubled. Average speed of trains increased especially after doubling of the 100km Chengalpet-Villupuram line was completed. The entire stretch was also completely electrified. All these haven't come cheap: A kilometre of doubling with electrification costs Rs 6-10 crores. But this investment has not translated to additional trains to contain rush or quicker journey time with the available fleet.
TOI analysed data of train arrivals and departures of several express trains on this route and found that these trains complete their journeys at least 30 to 45 minutes before schedule (see graphic). This before-time arrival is despite unscheduled stops of 15 to 20 minutes at Palavanthangal and Kodambakkam between Tambaram and Chennai Egmore. So in effect, on most days, trains can reach their destination at least an hour early.
Yet, Southern Railway traffic planners are dragging their feet for at least 18 months to bring down the quoted journey time. The move will not only benefit lakhs of passengers, but also save precious resources like electricity, diesel fuel and cut down steep overtime allowances paid to train-running staff. A back-of-envelope calculation shows that if travel time for one train carrying 1,000 passengers is reduced by 30 minutes, 625 man-days can be saved every month.
Yet trains are made to kill time on the outskirts. They arrive at least an hour early to Chennai's outskirts like Tambaram and Mambalam. "They are made to stop at stations like Pazhavanthangal, Kodambakkam for at least 10 to 15 minutes," say railway insiders who travel for inspections.
"Passengers are being cheated. Even after doubling, if the travel time is the same and operations department is claiming good punctuality, it is a sad state of affairs," said a senior railway official. He said the number of trains could be increased, but even that has not happened. Excuses of low capacity at Egmore yard wouldn't work as the same zone is working at a snail's pace to build a new yard in Tambaram, the official said.
For many trains, the zone has given a one-hour time gap to cover the 7km distance between Mambalam and Egmore. Fast EMU trains take 15 minutes to cover that.
TOI checked a similar combination for trains arriving at Mumbai Central that have stoppages at Borivali and Dadar, akin to Tambaram and Mambalam. Scheduled time between these stations in Mumbai is half of that in Chennai.
The operations department says this extra one hour is the cushion time given for maintenance works. However, insiders, including the official quoted above, said this was an excuse. "Cushion time can be 15 to 20 minutes in case of failures to mask operational inefficiencies which occur rarely. But one hour is too much which is given so that departmental heads can avoid tough questions when trains are delayed," the official said.
A senior official in operations department, however, indicated that there would be some changes in the 'positive direction' when the new timetable is out this year.

Due to theft of 18 Nos of Batteries of 120 AH capacity at Mahim Electrical Sub sectioning station, Western Railway's suburban services were got affected for more than an hour on Monday, 20th June, 2016.
At about 11.18 AM on 20th June, 2016, due to a technical glitch in OHE circuit near Dadar Rly station, the suburban traffic on all 5 lines got disrupted. It was found that this technical problem occurred due to theft of several battery boxes at Mahim Electrical Sub sectioning station, which resulted in no back up supply to the circuit and thereby OHE could not be charged. Efforts were immediately initiated in full swing, to rectify the problem at various levels and overhead traction supply was restored by about 12.10 hrs. The disrupted suburban traffic was also restored on all the lines between 12.18 hrs & 12.23 hrs.The Battery boxes are mainly used for the back up and charging purpose after minor tripping or fluctuation in OHE power supply & they also provide the necessary protection to the electric circuit. A case of theft of 18 batteries has been registered by RPF in this regard and the investigation is on. Due to above technical problem about 60 suburban services were cancelled and approx 100 were got delayed on W.Rly's suburban section.

Mumbai: The Western Railway (WR) has been left stumped at the failure of the newly-acquired Bombardier trains on Saturday and is working round-the-clock to fix the electrical glitch that had brought eight of the rakes to a standstill, leading to the cancellations of around 100 services.
Seventy-two Bombardier-make trains have been purchased at a cost of Rs 3,041 crore, of which roughly 36 have been delivered to be run on the WR. The delivery started early last year with the first service running on March 18, 2015. However, officials had not faced the issue as only a handful of the Bombardier trains were running on the line last monsoon.
“This year we have almost the entire fleet of Bombardier trains running on the WR every day. So when it rained moderately on Saturday and the power tripped due to fluctuations, these trains came to a complete standstill at various stations. The in-built system of the Bombardier is such that it shuts itself down when the power trips more than thrice. Until now we weren’t fully aware of this flaw. We did not realise the seriousness of this defect until the system was shot on Saturday,” said a senior railway official, on the condition of anonymity.
According to officials, there is a representative of the company stationed in Mumbai, but he too was at a loss. “The Bombardier representative came down and tried to fix the issue. However, the scale of failures from 10 am to noon was hard for him to handle as well. We are currently looking into the matter and we have to resolve it as everyone knows that we already see a lot of disruptions during the monsoon,” added the official.
Despite the debacle on Saturday, the WR has been improving its punctuality that had taken a hit for two years due to track work in Andheri, Bandra and Borivali.
