Introduction of Blanket Covers in First AC Coaches -to ensure supply of hygienic blankets
Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, SCR advised officials to implement innovative idea of supplying blankets with covers to the passengers in order to ensure cleanliness and hygiene. As per the guidelines of the General Manager and in tune with the Railway Board directives, SCR head quarters conducted trails by supplying blankets in covers for a period of six months both at Hyderabad and Secunderabad coaching depots in Mumbai Express and in Nizamuddin Duranto Express respectively. The blankets with different coloured cover for onward and return journey have been supplied to the passengers. An excellent feedback has been rewarded by the passengers during trail period, 79% of the passengers indicated the new scheme as excellent and 21% marked it as very good. on the basis of feedback from passengers with enhanced satisfaction, the new scheme has been approved by the General Manager to implement on all the 1st AC coaches of trains originating from Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
Accordingly, Shri Arjun Mundiya, Chief Mechanical Engineer, SCRhas launched the innovative scheme of supplying theblankets with covers to the first AC passengers in Devagiri Express at SecunderabadRailway station today i.e; on 9th June, 2017. Shri Amit Vardan, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad formally distributed the blankets with covers at Hyderabad Railway station to the 1st AC passengers travelling in Godavari Express.
This scheme will be implemented on regular basis in all the trains having first AC coaches viz., Charminar Express, Mumbai Express, Telangana Express and Hyderabad-Narsapur Express leaves Hyderabad Station and Falaknuma Express, Narayanadri Express, Ajantha Express, Simhapuri Express, Secunderabad-Lokmanyatilak Duranto Express, Secunderabad-Visakhpatnam Duranto Express, Secundrabad-Hazrath Nizamuddin Duranto Express, Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express and Secunderabad-Visakhpatnamweekly superfast express originating from Secunderabad Station.

Your Rajdhani train will now sport multi-coloured bed rolls, designed by NIFT
"It has been decided that the interiors of the coaches are changed including replacing the white colour bedrolls with multi-coloured ones," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
White bed sheets and pillow covers in trains are set to become a thing of the past as Railways is introducing multi-colour bedrolls designed by NIFT. Besides bedrolls, curtains of AC coaches are also being redesigned.
“It has been decided that the interiors of the coaches are changed including replacing the white colour bedrolls with multi-coloured ones. The newly-designed bedrolls will be introduced in one of the Rajdhani trains shortly,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.
The bedroll consists of two bed sheets, one pillow, a blanket and a hand towel. According to the new plan, barring hand towel, everything will be coloured. “NIFT was given the responsibility to design new coloured patterns for train travellers and it has sent an array of designs out of which we have selected two type of colours,” the official said.
Besides bedrolls, the colour of curtains will be also matching with the colour of bedsheets. The official said there will be new multi-coloured blankets now instead of regular blankets supplied in AC coaches. Railways provides about 3 lakh bedrolls daily for AC travellers.
The supply of multi-coloured bedrolls will cost Railways about 30 per cent more than what it spends now. It is a common complaint that the set of linen supplied to passengers are unhygienic, dirty and smelly.
Addressing the issue, Railways has undertaken steps to set up a state-of-the-art mechanised laundry at many stations. Continuing with new steps, Railways is also redesigning the seating arrangements in trains to improve the aesthetic look of the coach.

4th Meeting of “Kayakalp” (Innovation Council of Indian Railways) held
In its 4th Meeting held in New Delhi today, the 6th November, 2015, under the Chairmanship of Shri Ratan Tata, “Kayakalp” (Innovation Council of Indian Railways) discussed safety issues and attempted to identify the causes for accidents on account of manual failures.
The Council looked at approaches towards achieving greater hygiene and cleanliness on railway facilities such as stations.
The Council also examined customer focus of the Indian Railways at present and ways to make the organization more customer friendly. All Members agreed on Railways’ need to address customer needs in a more visible and effective manner.

Konkan Railways to serve ethnic food; invites tenders
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited(KRCL) has invited tenders from reputed caterers to serve ethnic food on major stations of Konkan Railway route.
Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu had issued instructions to KRCL to explore the possibility of serving ethnic food to the passengers, to promote local products of self-employed groups.
Konkan Railway traverses through Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.
The tender will be opened on September 3 and based on the outcome of the tender proceedings, Konkan Railway will be able to fulfill the long cherished dream of serving ethnic food as a delicacy to its esteemed passengers travelling on Konkan Railway route, said a spokesperson of KRCL on Wednesday.
This will also generate more employment to the people on its route, apart from promoting their local products and delicacies, said the spokesperson.

Railways contemplate Disposable Linen for a Price; launches Online Survey to know passengers’ preference
New Delhi: Swamped by thousands of complaints regarding the supply of dirty linen on board trains, Indian Railways is contemplating introduction of disposable towels, pillow covers and maybe even bed sheets for a price. The railways has started an online survey to find out what people desire and how much they are willing to pay for a peaceful night’s rest while travelling. There have been instances when passengers have pointed to stains on bed sheets and pillow covers and demanded that these be replaced. Bedroll porters are known to throw up their hands in despair and show how all linen stocked in coaches are similarly soiled and crushed.
Earlier, zonal railways used to hire launderers to wash used linen. This resulted in chaos with many launderers failing to supply fresh bed sheets, pillow covers and towels on time. Those in charge of issuing bedrolls to passengers were then forced to recycle used linen. Now, Eastern Railway has set up a mechanized laundry at Tikiapara that has capacity to wash 4,000 bedrolls (8,000 bed sheets, 4,000 pillow covers and 4,000 towels) everyday. South Eastern Railway has also commissioned a similar laundry at Santragachi of 2,000 bedrolls capacity. This will be augmented to 6,000 bedrolls in the future.
“Given the number of trains and the increase in upper-class passengers, this may not be sufficient. Apart from regular bedrolls, there are plans to introduce disposable ones for people who are ready to pay extra. Regular bedrolls are supplied without any additional cost to air-conditioned passengers,” a senior officer in Delhi said.
The survey launched by the railways begins with the age group of the respondent, his or her occupation and the frequency of travel. Respondents must also reveal what class they travel in and whether they carry beddings along. The next set of questions is about the quality of bedrolls supplied on trains and satisfaction levels. The survey then wants to know whether respondents would prefer disposable linen.
“The survey goes beyond hygiene and cleanliness. Respondents are asked what quality of bed sheets they would prefer and even their choice of colour. The choices given are light colour, white or dark shades. People are also asked whether they would prefer printed bed sheets and the kind of pattern on them. The choices are large prints, small all over prints or geometric prints. Passengers can also say whether they prefer cotton, cotton polyester or polyester sheets,” the official said.
The final portion of the survey deals with whether passengers want disposable pillow covers. Respondents are also asked how much they are prepared to shell out. There are multiple choices. Passengers can choose Rs 60 and the maximum is between Rs 120 and Rs 150. The final question is whether passengers want the bedrolls to have fire retardant properties.

New Delhi: With a focus on cleanliness and hygiene, the New Delhi Railway Station may soon be fitted with stainless steel toilets on a pilot basis.
Railway authorities in the national capital said that after receiving positive feedback from passengers they will expand the project and install more steel toilets on other platforms.
These stainless steel toilets are easier to clean and more hygienic in comparison to the existing ones, said the divisional railway manager, Delhi division, Arun Arora.
“Soon, the first stainless steel toilet will be installed at the New Delhi Railway Station, and passengers’ feedback will be taken about its effectiveness. Feedback will also be received from railway workers about the toilet’s operation and maintenance,” said Mr Arora.
Based on a positive feedback from passengers and sanitation workers, more stainless steel toilets will be installed, he said. As per the plan, these toilets will be installed at platforms, concourse and circulating areas of the station premises.
Railways is also mooting to build toilets at all the platforms in the New Delhi Railway Station. Officials said that the decision to construct toilets at all the platforms is taken to dissuade passengers from using toilets on stationary trains.
Presently, only platform number one and 16 have toilet facilities for male and female passengers. Three platforms have urinals for men. After the New Delhi Railway Station, stainless steel toilets will be installed in other railway stations in Anand Vihar, Old Delhi and Nizamuddin.
In a later phase, all the existing toilets will be replaced with the stainless steel ones. “These stainless toilets have several benefits. Apart from easy maintenance and cleanliness, they are more durable,” added Mr Arora.

Go Green Solutions with support of technology developed and approved by DRDO – Ministry of Defence offers an innovative technology for disposal of human waste in eco friendly manner. These Bio toilets can function at any atmospheric temp between -55 to 60 degree C. The bacterial consortium degrades night soil at temp as low as -55 degree C and produces colourless, odourless and inflammable bio gas containing 50 – 70% methane.

The main constituents of Bio Toilet are Pre fabricated above the ground shelter and Bio Digester tank. Bio digester tank is a cylindrical structure with the provision of inlet for human waste and out let for Bio gas. Temp in the bio – digester is maintained between 5-30 degree C. A person can use the toilet which is connected to the bio-digester. Night soil degradation occurs through microbial reaction which converts it into bio gas. The smell of night soil, the disease causing organisms in the night soil and the solid matter are eliminated totally. On dry weight basis 90% of the solid waste is reduced. The gaseous effluent (bio-gas) is continuously let off to the atmosphere. Bio Gas can be used for various energy incentive activities like cooking water and room heating. Liquid effluent can be drained to any surface or soak pit with out any environmental hazards.
TECHNOLOGY BEHIND BIO TOILET
Human waste disposal in high altitude and low temp areas, Moving Railway coaches, Buses, Big Cities, Mines, remote areas, Beaches, Rural areas, long distance buses is a burning problem.
The problem has further aggravated in glaciers where ambient temperature drops to -40 degree C and lower. The low temp stops/ delays the natural bio-degradation of the waste leading to its preservation (accumulation) for long time resulting in environmental hazard.

Local heating by direct sunlight exposes the waste buried in the ice causing nuisance and foul smell. The melting ice takes the waste to rivers disturbing the aquatic eco system. More over human waste is also responsible for spreading of water born diseases like typhoid, cholera, Shigellosis, Amebic Dysenteries, Diarrhea etc.
This technology is suitable for any area/ application in India. The process under this technology culminates in to treated effluent which is free from Pathogens and is also environmentally acceptable. The technology has major two components:
a- Low temp active inoculums
b- Temp controlled Bio digester
A consortium of anaerobic bacteria has been formulated and adopted to work at temp as low as 5 degree C. This is the component which acts as inoculums (seed material) to the bio digester and converts the organic waste into methane and carbon-dioxide. The anaerobic process in- activates the pathogens responsible for water born diseases. Bio digester serves as reaction vessel for bio methanation and provides the anaerobic conditions and required temp for the bacteria. The optimum temp is maintained by microbial heat, insulation of the reactor and solar heating.
