Railways begins process to build Fire Exit Doors for Trains

Railways begins process to build Fire Exit Doors for Trains

Pilot project will choose 10 Coaches and Rs 30 Lakh will be spent on each of them

New Delhi: The railway ministry for the first time has begun the process of having fire exit doors for train coaches to help passengers escape in case of a fire incident and also to allow train staff to evacuate passengers quickly. The railway ministry will be picking up 10 coaches for this pilot project and will be spending Rs 30 lakh on each of these coaches to build these fire exit doors.

The thought of having fire exit doors in trains came up as part of a high-power study and research into train fires conducted last March by the railways’ Centre for Advanced Maintenance Technology (Camtech) headquartered in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It was one of the recommendations of the study apart from having bigger emergency windows for non-air conditioned coaches and also to have vestibules to connect general coaches so that people can move from one coach to another in case of a fire.

According to officials, the fire exit door is a good progress in a railway system that for several years now has had nothing to show as part of its fire-fighting mechanism apart from red-grilled emergency windows in general coaches. In fact, it is just of late that the railways has been toying with the idea of having thermal insulating material for latches and handles of doors so that passengers can hold them and open doors to escape a fire. The latter is also one of the recommendations made to the railways by the Camtech study.

“It is a good start because the railways safety record when it comes to fires is poor. Moreover, passengers also travel dangerously by sometimes smoking near the toilets and vestibules. There are also instances of people carrying liquor in trains. The railways should be severe on such passengers,” said Bhandup-resident Manish Chaturvedi.

Why train fire is dangerous

1) A train consists of long, narrow vehicles with limited exits coupled with each other

2) High traveling speeds prevent quick escape and assist the rapid spread of fire

3) Wide range of track conditions, including confined sections such as bridges, tunnels, ghats, etc., make it difficult for passengers to get off the vehicle easily in times of emergency

4) Restriction in movement of passengers and fast spread of fire aggravates the situation

5) A large number of passengers traveling on trains are attended to by a small team of train crew

Camtech study recommendations

1) Fire extinguishers should be provided in all coaches, i.e., also in general second class coaches, non-AC 3 tier coaches and non-AC chair cars etc.

2) The size of emergency exit windows in General Coaches/3-tier sleeper coaches/non-AC chair car shall be of larger size as in case of AC coaches so that it can be identified easily and easy to exit as these coaches are highly occupied

3) Vestibuling in the general coaches may be explored, this will help in evacuating passengers in case of any disaster/emergency

5) Authority to be given to AC mechanic to ask passengers to not to smoke

6) Overhead water tanks of toilets may be provided with fusible drain plug. In case of fire this fusible drain plug will melt due to high temperature and water will spill out in door way area which may reduce the intensity of fire.

Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains

Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains

Now, rate the trains and stations online

Online community network LocalCircles has launched a feature to rate stations and trains on various parameters, including safety and cleanliness.

Rail passengers can now rate thousands of trains and railway stations on safety, cleanliness, timeliness, services and other amenities online.

Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains and 4,500 railway stations with the Ministry of Railways on a consolidated basis.

Passengers can visit the official website of LocalCircles, search for a train or station they would like to rate for and submit their feedback.

“While individual grievances can at times be an exception, these ratings will represent the collective and have built-in accountability as every citizen is rating with their real first and last name”, said Sachin Taparia, Chairman and CEO of LocalCircles, adding that the rating system has been rolled out after hundreds of requests from citizens.

Feedback of over 10,000 citizens has already been taken in a soft roll out conducted by LocalCircles in their ‘Make Railways Better Circle’ community.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has actively used social media platforms in the past to take feedback on train services and performance of Railways.

The Rail Budget has also emphasised on passenger feedback as it announced a single official will be made accountable for each train’s on board experience.

Rail Budget Feedback

More than 75 per cent citizens found the Railway Budget 2016-17, presented last week, as meeting or exceeding expectations, a survey by LocalCircles showed.

“Overall 13 of the 21 recommendations collectively made by citizens were accepted and the 8 pending recommendations are mostly in the area of ticketing policy,” Mr. Taparia said.

Some of the recommendations that found mention in the Railway Budget were increasing lower berth quota for senior citizens, CCTV monitoring at tatkal ticket counters, electronic display boards inside trains and more.

Hygiene Food Service from IRCTC?

Don't like the food on train? Indian Railways wants your feedback

NEW DELHI: In its bid to improve hygiene, food quality and services in trains, the Indian Railways has started collecting feedback from the public from this month. "The feedback service is in line with the emphasis given by rail minister Suresh Prabhu on the best connect between railway administration and railway users," the railway ministry said in a statement.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been entrusted with the job of collecting the feedback, which will be done through an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) with the number '139'. Under this system, passengers are being contacted randomly on their mobile phones to gather their feedback about the facilities provided by the Railways in six areas -- cleanliness of station/platform/train, quality of catering, level of cooling of AC, quality of food, punctuality of t ..

Out of the six facilities, a passenger is asked to send his/her feedback on only two facilities. They are given three options of pressing on mobile: 2 (Two) for Good, 1 (one) for Satisfactory and 0 (Zero) for unsatisfactory/Bad with regard to a particular amenity.

On an average 60-70 calls per day, per train are being made and efforts are on to make approximately one lakh successful calls per day to passengers of mail/ express trains, the ministry added.

The service was initially being tested on a few trains. The move, according to the ministry, is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative of Swachh Bharat campaign to provide better service to passengers travelling in trains.

Railway moots Stainless Steel toilets for Delhi

Railway moots Stainless Steel toilets for Delhi

New Delhi: With a focus on cleanliness and hygiene, the New Delhi Railway Station may soon be fitted with stainless steel toilets on a pilot basis.

Railway authorities in the national capital said that after receiving positive feedback from passengers they will expand the project and install more steel toilets on other platforms.

These stainless steel toilets are easier to clean and more hygienic in comparison to the existing ones, said the divisional railway manager, Delhi division, Arun Arora.

“Soon, the first stainless steel toilet will be installed at the New Delhi Railway Station, and passengers’ feedback will be taken about its effectiveness. Feedback will also be received from railway workers about the toilet’s operation and maintenance,” said Mr Arora.

Based on a positive feedback from passengers and sanitation workers, more stainless steel toilets will be installed, he said. As per the plan, these toilets will be installed at platforms, concourse and circulating areas of the station premises.

Railways is also mooting to build toilets at all the platforms in the New Delhi Railway Station. Officials said that the decision to construct toilets at all the platforms is taken to dissuade passengers from using toilets on stationary trains.

Presently, only platform number one and 16 have toilet facilities for male and female passengers. Three platforms have urinals for men. After the New Delhi Railway Station, stainless steel toilets will be installed in other railway stations in Anand Vihar, Old Delhi and Nizamuddin.

In a later phase, all the existing toilets will be replaced with the stainless steel ones. “These stainless toilets have several benefits. Apart from easy maintenance and cleanliness, they are more durable,” added Mr Arora.
