Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains
Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains
Now, rate the trains and stations online
Online community network LocalCircles has launched a feature to rate stations and trains on various parameters, including safety and cleanliness.
Rail passengers can now rate thousands of trains and railway stations on safety, cleanliness, timeliness, services and other amenities online.
Online community network LocalCircles will share the feedback of citizens for over 2,900 trains and 4,500 railway stations with the Ministry of Railways on a consolidated basis.
Passengers can visit the official website of LocalCircles, search for a train or station they would like to rate for and submit their feedback.
“While individual grievances can at times be an exception, these ratings will represent the collective and have built-in accountability as every citizen is rating with their real first and last name”, said Sachin Taparia, Chairman and CEO of LocalCircles, adding that the rating system has been rolled out after hundreds of requests from citizens.
Feedback of over 10,000 citizens has already been taken in a soft roll out conducted by LocalCircles in their ‘Make Railways Better Circle’ community.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has actively used social media platforms in the past to take feedback on train services and performance of Railways.
The Rail Budget has also emphasised on passenger feedback as it announced a single official will be made accountable for each train’s on board experience.
Rail Budget Feedback
More than 75 per cent citizens found the Railway Budget 2016-17, presented last week, as meeting or exceeding expectations, a survey by LocalCircles showed.
“Overall 13 of the 21 recommendations collectively made by citizens were accepted and the 8 pending recommendations are mostly in the area of ticketing policy,” Mr. Taparia said.
Some of the recommendations that found mention in the Railway Budget were increasing lower berth quota for senior citizens, CCTV monitoring at tatkal ticket counters, electronic display boards inside trains and more.

Railways to setup single window travel shop
Railways to setup single window travel shop
To promote tourism and travel activity, the Indian Railways on Wednesday said that it plans to setup a 'single window shop' for all tourism products through a unique tourist facilitation centre located in the national capital.
According to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the facilitation centre will come up in Connaught Place and offer a string of rail, land and air tour packages for both domestic and international travellers.
The centre will also assist in itinerary management, visa facilitation, insurance, customised tours and concierge services.
"This will be the first of its kind initiative anywhere in the country, where the entire travel needs are taken care of under one roof," said A.K. Manocha, chairman and managing director, IRCTC.
"This is also the only brick and mortar office of the IRCTC, where people can walk in to buy a train or air travel package and even get a customised trip as per their convenience," Manocha elaborated.
The facilitation centre will not only handle all special train tours of the IRCTC, but will also offer air packages for Jammu and Kashmir, Shirdi and Tirupati.
Recently, IRCTC announced air travel packages from Delhi to Jammu and Kashmir and Shirdi which were completely sold out.
"The Tirupati package got a booking of 80 percent almost immediately," informed Pradeep Dhiman, additional general manager, IRCTC.
Explaining, the official said these packages are popular as the entire needs and of tourists are taken care of by IRCTC.
"The Tirupati package from Delhi comprises air ticket, AC coach from Chennai to Tirupati, 4 star hotel accommodation, food and VIP darshan," Dhiman pointed out.
IRCTC added that the facilitation centre will cater to the travel requirements of all the government departments and public sector companies, besides clients in the corporate sector.
It will also facilitate air tickets, accommodation and sightseeing for foreign delegates or students visiting India on exchange programmes.
The 16-year-old 'mini Ratna' PSU of the Indian Railways, had introduced e-ticketing in 2002 through its digital platform.
The average daily sale of train tickets through the IRCTC portal, which is the world's second busiest with three crore registered users, is around 5.5 lakh to 6 lakh.

Soon, direct trains to connect Tambaram with Arakkonam
Soon, direct trains to connect Tambaram with Arakkonam
CHENNAI: Realizing that around 15% of suburban travellers — 8 lakh to 10 lakh per day — change over from the southern line to the western line every day, Southern Railway is planning to introduce direct trains between Tambaram and Arakkonam via Beach railway station.
Now people get down at beach and board trains to Tiruvallur or Arakkonam from another platform.
Divisional railway manager, Chennai, Anupam Sharma said, "The 12-car services will start by end of the year. This will ensure that there will be more 12-car trains on the Beach-Tiruvallur-Arakkonam route."
Tambaram-Beach and Beach-Arakkonam line together handle more than 80% of the suburban traffic.
"The demand for a through train has been there for a long time. The number of commuters who get down at Beach railway station and board trains to Tiruvallur and Arakkonam has increased," said a railway official. He also said that the move to run 'through' trains came because of the patronage for services.
The move will be beneficial to hundreds of commuters because they currently spend 15 minutes to 20 minutes at Beach waiting for the connection on the Arakkonam route.
In November, six trains on the Arakkonam-Beach line and two trains on the Sulurpet-Beach line were extended to Velachery. This includes a ladies special from Arakkonam at 7am.
Railway Passengers Association, Tiruvallur, K Baskar, said, "Railways should introduce fast trains between Tambaram and Arakkonam with stops at major stations. This will not only cut down the travel time but also make the trains less crowded."
Several passengers who live in the western suburbs travel to Saidapet, Guindy and also Tambaram for work and education.
Similarly, people who live in neighbourhoods along the southern line travel to Perambur, Ambattur and Tiruvallur for work.
"Trains are cheaper for people. It costs Rs 1,000 to buy a monthly pass on bus but a season ticket will cost only Rs 235 from Chrompet to Tiruvallur. This matters a lot to the monthly budget of people. Trains are faster also," said Baskar.
Railways have started to upgrade stations on Beach-Tiruvallur to accommodate 12-car trains. "Platforms are being lengthened at many stations. We are planning to extend platforms at five stations between Korattur and Pattabhiram and in seven stations between Egattur and Puliyamangalam this year so that the services can be operated from Tambaram," said Anupam Sharma.
He also said that a new foot overbridge would be built and platforms 2 and 3 would be extended at Arakkonam railway station.

Passengers could claim the insurance money in case of lost or theft of baggage -Indian Railways
Railways to Launch baggage Insurance Plan for Passengers
The Railways is planning to launch Baggage Insurance Service to the passengers, wherein passengers will be compensated for valuables that they lose during the train journey.
Sources said talks were on with the New India Assurance to provide the service.
Passengers could claim the insurance money in case of lost or theft of baggage and goods such as laptop, mobile phone and other valuables. The service would be offered to passengers booking tickets online through the IRCTC website, but would not be mandatory.
“We are formalising tie-up with a leading insurance company for offering baggage insurance service to e-ticket customers. A customer will be given an option to avail of the insurance coverage, which will not be mandatory,” said an IRCTC official.
The customer will be given an option to avail the insurance coverage, which will not be mandatory. Around 2 million passengers travel every day and about 52% opt for e-ticketing. He said the insurance premium would depend on the length of the journey and also the class of travel.
Also, efforts are on to offer services such as hospitalisation of passengers, if need arises, during the journey. Besides, the passengers are now offered e-catering and concierge services while booking tickets on certain trains and routes.
Over two million passengers daily use the railways for travel, with half of them booking tickets online through the IRCTC website, the official pointed out.
