Carbon Emission and Diesel Consumption Reduced By introduction of HOG in Telangana Express
Carbon Emission and Diesel Consumption Reduced By introduction of HOG in Telangana Express
No.420/2019-20
08-08-2019
Secunderabad
Head-On-Generation (HOG) system - A new Technology introduced in Telangana Express
Head on Generation system, a new technology has been introduced in Telangana Express which is started today i.e., 07th August 2019 for catering the power needs of the coaches such as coach lighting and Air conditioning.
Earlier, there were two power cars known as End on Generators (EOG) are available on both the ends of Telangana Express for providing lighting and air conditioning in the coaches. These power cars produce electricity by diesel generator for supplying to coaches. Each power car required 40 litres of diesel per hours per non ac coach and around 65 to 70 litres of diesel per hour per coach in case of AC coach.
In order to lessen diesel consumption and carbon footprint, a state-of-the-art new technology Head on Generation (HOG) system has been introduced in Telangana Express. So far, the power supply tapped from power lines through pantograph to the train engine is used only to run the engine and haul the coaches. Now in this new system power supply tapped from overhead to the train engine will be distributed to the trailing coaches.
This new system does not require any diesel oil consumption and as such will reduces air pollution and also noise pollution. In addition, it also provides uninterrupted illumination in the coaches. on an average it will reduce carbon emission by 700 MT per year per train in regular practice for a train provided with two power cars equipped with diesel alternator sets. The average expenditure incurred on fuel consumption per trip per each train of Telangana Express is around Rs 2 lakhs. Whereas the electrical energy consumption cost per trip per train in the new system is around Rs. 78,000/-. The estimated savings for each trip of Telangana Express is approximately Rs 1.22 lakh and the overall estimated savings per year is around Rs. 1.35 crore.
All the existing Telangana Express trains will now run on Head on Generation System. Two more trains namely Train No. 22707/22708 Visakhapatnam- Tirupati- Visakhapatnam Express and Train No. 22705/22706 Tirupati - Jammutawi -Tirupati Humsafar Express are also running with the new technology of Head on Generation system from South Central Railway.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, South Central Railway appreciated the efforts of staff and officers of SCR on this achievement and advised to extend the same for some more trains to adopt environmentally friendly initiatives by reducing carbon foot prints and also fuel consumption measures.

Remarks on AC Local -Railway Board
Remarks on AC Local -Railway Board
Railway Board makes scathing remarks on AC local
ICF has been asked to fix responsibility for manufacturing the rake
Also submit a detailed schedule of all tests to be carried out on the rake
RDSO and BHEL have been asked to submit the final commissioning of the rake
Member Rollin Stock, Railway Board inspected various railway facilities in Mumbai a couple of months ago. The notes from this visit have been uploaded on IR’s website. Railway board member has made some harsh remarks about the air-conditioned EMU rake which is currently undergoing testing. A short summary of the remarks:
A. He notes that the rake is badly delayed due to some issues which could not be resolved. RDSO and BHEL have been asked to submit the final timeline for commissioning of the rake & also submit a detailed schedule of all tests to be carried out on the rake.
B. ICF has been asked to fix responsibility for manufacturing the rake with 4335 mm height even though max allowed height is 4275 mm on Central Railway.
C. Various deficiencies were noted in the rake with regards to high noise, vibrations, improper interiors & internal furnishings.
These issues need to be addressed before pressing the rake into service. Some of the issues are:
1. Very high level of noise when AC units are switched on. It should be brought down to permissible noise levels
2. Low height of luggage racks
3. Projections over seating area due to large size
4. AC unit height is more than permissible height
5. Vestibule (portion that allows walking from one coach to other) and floor are at different heights causing uneven flooring
6. Vestibules are tilting, which creates gap between coaches. Design needs modification
7. Public information system needs to be more elegant and at a better location
8. Loose screws were found on flooring & flooring sheets were uneven
9. Grab handles were broken. A sturdier design needs to be used
10. Height of grab handles should also be looked into
11. AC unit in motorman’s cab blows cold air directly on the back of motorman which will be uncomfortable for him
12. CCTV camera should be provided
13. LED lights should be used
14. Number of fans should be reduced and their speed too should be reduced
It looks like the rake has many deficiencies & was hurriedly despatched from ICF. There is still no clarity on when it will be inducted into regular service. That day does seem to be quite far off.
During the inspection of Matunga workshop, Siemens rake motorcoaches too were inspected. Recently CR has been hit by a spate of cracks in bolsters of Siemens EMUs. A bogie bolster is the central section of the bogie that carries the entire weight of a coach on it. Cracks in such a critical component is a safety issue. CR has been working proactively to ensure all rakes are in a condition fit to run.
These issues are most probably due to poor manufacturing/quality control at ICF. In his notes, the member of board is critical of this as well. He says:
a) From January 2017 to February 2017, 24 cases of cracks in bolster have been reported. 2 coaches having cracks were inspected.
b) As this is a critical item for safety, ICF was asked to come up with suitable repair procedures quickly. The repairs should be carried out by manufacturer of bogies under supervision of ICF.
c) ICF should trace manufacturer of each defective bolster.
d) RDSO should carry out the audit of manufacturing processes of suppliers.
e) Siemens rakes have started showing high levels of corrosion in various parts of the coach in just 6-7 years. ICF should investigate and take corrective action on it.
Overall, this report reflects poorly on ICF. Their quality and finishing have come under criticism from the board. This is nothing new though, as the lack of quality is clearly visible even to the naked eye.

Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation suggests AC trains for Western Railway slow corridors
Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation suggests AC trains for Western Railway slow corridors
Mumbai: The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has suggested the addition of air-conditioned trains, especially for the Western Railway (WR), on the slow corridor between Churchgate and Virar, after the new air-conditioned train coming in April was diverted to the Central Railway’s Trans-Harbour line. This is a part of a total of a package for future works worth Rs 35,000 crore.
The suggestion is on MRVC’s wish list at an estimated cost of Rs 4,223 crore as of March 2015, and it is a part of the corporation’s future plans related to Mumbai’s railways. MRVC’s chief managing director Prabhat Sahai said that these were a part of its “way ahead for MRVC” and that it is a rough outlook of what is to happen after Mumbai Urban Transport Project III was sanctioned by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu.
“These works are just a rough outline of what is to follow naturally. These are not sanctioned yet, but we always have plans for Mumbai suburban and its betterment,” he said.
The air-conditioned trains are to be clubbed with a signalling system called Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), which is said to improve punctuality of services.
The new suburban corridor will be between Virar-Vasai- Panvel section, 3rd and 4th line between Kalyan-Kasara and Kalyan-Karjat and another premium elevated corridor will be between Kurla-Thane-Bhiwandi as well.
Mr Prabhu in a tweet a week ago announced that the CR would be getting the first air-conditioned trains in the city, which in fact was supposed to go to the WR instead.
This had caused a lot of commotion among WR officers, who had created a different fare structure for this train and sent it to the Railway Board and the ministry as well.
