Advance Reservation Period of Select Special Trains increased from 10 days to 120 days

Railways have earlier announced 10 days as the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for booking of tickets in select special trains.Now it is decided to increase the ARP to 120 days for following trains with effect from 10.2.2021.

a) 07415 Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus Kolhapur – Tirupati Special

b) 07618 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai – Hazur Sahib Nanded Special

c) 02729 Pune-Hazur Sahib Nanded Special

d) 02236 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus - Secunderabad Special

e) 07613 Panvel- Hazur Sahib Nanded Special

f) 02766 Amravati-Tirupati Festival Special

Bookings for all above special trains with Advance Reservation Period of 120 days will open o­n 10.2.2021 at all computerised reservation centres and o­n website www.irctc.co.in.

Railways introduces Advance booking of Parcel Space

In the direction of customer friendly initiatives, Indian Railways has introduced advance booking facility of Parcel space in Luggage Rooms (SLRs) available o­n Passenger carrying trains and Parcel Vans (VPs) attached to the regular trains (non-indented) and also in time tabled parcel trains. The advance booking of space in SLRs and VPs shall be permitted 120 days in advance, subject to payment of 10% of the total freight by the customer at the time of booking. The Balance payment (90%) of the freight has to be paid at least 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train for which the advance booking has been made. If the customer has failed to pay the balance amount as stipulated above i.e., at least 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the advance booking will be cancelled and advance freight will be forfeited.

There have been repeated requests from the parcel customers for introduction advance booking facility of parcel space so as to plan their logistics in a better way which will also generate additional traffic to Railways. Accordingly, now Railway Board has permitted Zonal Railways to allow advance booking facility of parcel space in SLRs, VPs attached to passenger carrying trains and time tabled parcel trains.

The existing facility of advance indenting of parcel vans, to be attached to passenger-carrying trains and time tabled Parcel Special trains, shall also be permitted 120 days in advance o­n payment of prescribed Wagon Demand Registration Fee as per extant rules.

In case the customer wishes to cancel the booking, such cancellation should be done atleast 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train for which advance booking has been made. In such case, 50% of the advanced freight shall be refunded. However, there shall be no refund if the cancellation is done after the deadline of 72 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. In case of inability of Railway Administration to provide parcel space in the train o­n account of cancellation of train or any other reason, full advance freight shall be refunded to the customer.

Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR stated that this facility immensely helps the traders, cargo aggregators and farmers, especially those who are handling small quantities for transporting their consignments in a safe, secure, economical and fastest mode as per the planned schedule. He also appealed to rail customers to optimally utilize the advance booking system to plan their transportation needs and logistics as per their convenience.

Cancellation of passenger trains till 3.5.2020
In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of COVID-19 Lockdown, it has been decided that all passenger train services including premium trains, Mail/Express trains, Passenger trains, Suburban Trains, Kolkata Metro Rail, Konkan Railway etc shall continue to remain cancelled till 3rd May 2020.
Freight Trains:
To ensure the essential supplies in various parts of the country, movement of goods and Parcel trains will remain continue.
Cancellation of tickets:
All ticket counters for bookings including UTS & PRS, will remain suspended till further orders. No advance reservation of trains tickets, including E tickets, till further orders, however, facility of o­nline cancellation remains functional. No booking of any type, including E tickets will be done after 3rd May till further orders.
Refund:
Full refund for reservation made for the trains cancelled.Full refund will also be there for those cancelling the advance bookings of tickets for trains not yet cancelled
As far as trains cancelled upto 3rd May 2020 is concerned, the refunds would be automatically by the Railways online to the customers while those who have booked at the counters, refund can be taken upto 31st July 2020.

A.Pune – Santragachi AC Superfast weekly specials (26)
02821 AC Superfast weekly special will leave Pune at 10.30 hrs o­n every Monday from 9.4.2018 to 2.7.2018 (13 trips) and arrive Santragachi at 18.15 hrs next day.
02822 AC Superfast weekly special will leave Santragachi at 18.30 hrs o­n every Saturday from 7.4.2018 to 30.6.2018 (13 trips) and arrive Pune at 02.45 hrs o­n third day.
Halts: Panvel, Kalyan, Bhusaval, Nagpur, Durg, Raipur, Bilaspur, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Chakradharpur, Tatanagar and Kharagpur.
Composition:3 AC 2- tier, 8 AC 3-tier.
B.Pune – Hatia Superfast weeklyspecials (26)

02846 Superfast weekly special will leave Hatia at 21.00 hrs o­n every Wednesday from 4.4.2018 to 27.6.2018 (13 trips) and arrive Pune at 02.45 hrs o­n third day.
HALTS: Daund, Ahmednagar, Kopergaon, Manmad, Bhusaval, Akola, Badnera, Wardha, Nagpur, Gondia, Durg, Raipur, Bilaspur, Jharsuguda and Rourkela,.
COMPOSITION: - o­ne AC 2-tier, Four AC 3-tier, 6 Sleeper Class, 6 General Second Class.

Most travellers in India know that the start of a festival season is a testing time.

If you have not planned well in advance, getting train tickets for a safe and comfortable journey is almost impossible just before and during the festival season.

Those with money can fly, but exercising that option could mean shelling out an exorbitantly high fare for a travel that would have cost less than half in the normal course.

That scenario, however, has changed. For almost all short-distance routes (between 400 and 700 kilometres), air tickets even at higher prices are now difficult to get during the festival season, while the pleasant surprise is that train tickets are available with relative ease.

Last Friday marked the start of a week-long festival season of Dussehra.

Most schools, colleges and many corporate offices are closed for many days during the week. The rush for train tickets, therefore, should have been huge.

But the experience of many rail travellers during the weekend was that many coaches were travelling with many vacant seats.

One entire coach with 56 seats in the executive class chair car category, for instance from Lucknow to New Delhi, had only four paying passengers. For the same weekend, an air ticket for the same sector was simply not available.

An interesting point to be noted was that the easily available executive class train tickets were only a couple of hundred rupees less than the airline fares for the same distance.

What was really happening? And does this have a lesson for the Indian Railways and its traffic management team?

To understand the changed scenario, it is important to remember a few recent developments affecting India’s travel industry.

Thanks to falling crude oil prices, airfares have come down significantly in the last one year. Till recently, an executive or first class air-conditioned train fare would actually be costlier than an air ticket on the same route.

But that situation has been reversed. Air tickets are now just a few hundred rupees more expensive than such train fares for short distances.

Secondly, the Indian Railways has stepped up its efforts to provide more railway connections between cities to tap the growing market for travellers.

Especially for sectors whose distance is between 400 and 700 kilometres, there are now more train options than the flights available on the same sector.

It is the combination of these two developments that has seen a rush for air tickets even though train fares are only marginally lower than air fares.

As a result, plane tickets are not available and trains are not running at full capacity.

The lessons that the Indian Railways must learn from this are obvious. It must opt for a dynamic fare-fixing system.

While offering more trains to increase capacity and options for passengers, especially on short-distance sectors, is a good idea, its traffic managers should recognise the reality of an increasingly competitive market where airlines are luring their customers with lower airfares.

In the days of relatively higher crude oil prices, airlines could seek recourse to fare discounts only up to a point as they did not want to financially bleed themselves.

But now they enjoy greater flexibility to offer discounted fares because of lower aviation turbine fuel prices.

The Indian Railways has already promised to introduce a dynamic fare structure on certain routes, but it must expand its coverage if it wants to retain its top-end customers, who account for a huge chunk of its total passenger revenues.

Technological upgrade can certainly help to an extent. The online ticket sales platform can be upgraded to get more value per seat it is offering to passengers.

But more importantly, its managerial workforce, including the network of divisional railway managers, must show greater enterprise and commitment to make the Indian Railways a more market-savvy organisation that can offer better services at competitive fares.

The running of the Indian Railways should ideally be segmented into two categories. There is a huge need for building capacity in the Indian Railways.

That goal has to be achieved with the help of setting up new projects and building new capacities through necessary investments – a task that has begun in earnest, even though decision making for such projects needs to be decentralised to impart greater speed to their execution.

The second and equally important category of work pertains to the operational aspects of the Indian Railways.

It is in this area that there is the need for improvements in management and marketing techniques.

This would include better trains, attractive fares and modernised stations.

Without them, more trains are likely to run at low capacity, even as airlines woo the railway passengers.

Indian Railways to launch concession-less Suvidha trains on 15 July

In a revamp of its passenger fare framework, Indian Railways will step ahead on concession-less service with the launch of Suvidha trains, the rechristened premium trains run on dynamic fare system, from July 15. The introduction of the new service will also make waitlisted tickets a thing of the past.

While concessions will continue in all other trains as at present, there will be no concessions for Suvidha service. These trains, which will cater to the peak demand observed during winter and summer rush, and festivals like Dussehra and Holi and run on select routes, are being currently identified. “The idea is to cater to the premium passengers, including short-notice travellers, in order to give them better service and assured tickets, and earn additional revenue in the process,” said a senior rail ministry official.

The railways will issue only confirmed and reservation against cancellation (RAC) tickets for Suvidha trains. Since the trains are meant to serve passengers travelling at short notice, the advanced reservation period (ARP) has been cut down to a maximum of 30 days and a minimum of 10 days.

According to the ministry’s circular, no concession will be applicable on these trains and full adult fare will be changed for all passengers, irrespective of age. Also, free or complimentary passes will not be permitted in these trains. Further, only general quota bookings will be applicable and there will also be no first AC, first class, executive class, general class, 2nd sitting (2S) coach in the composition of Suvidha trains.

Indian Railways currently runs Duronto trains without concessionary tickets and Rajdhanis with a few minor concessions. The official said Suvidha trains will completely replace premium trains, which are already being run on select 50-odd routes, but with a modified fare framework.

The rail ministry had introduced the premium train service with dynamic fare system, under which fares were increased with increasing demand, over a year back. Railways, however, started facing issues as it was observed that higher demand pushed third-AC fares higher than second-AC class. “Also, it was observed that multiple bookings by a single-user are jacking up prices. Therefore, we have introduced a new system of slab-wise fares in Suvidha trains,” the official said.

Under the changed structure, railways will run three types of Suvidha trains: full AC trains without stops charging Rajdhani base fare and Tatkal charges; mixed service with no stops charging Duronto base fare and Tatkal charges; and mixed service with some stops charging base fare of mail and express trains, and Tatkal charges.

Passengers would have to pay the cost of base fare and Tatkal charges for the first 20 per cent seats; one-and-a-half times the cost of base fare and Tatkal for the next 20 per cent seats; two times the cost of base fare and Tatkal charges for the next 20 per cent. Similarly, for the last two slabs of seat availability, passengers would pay two-and-a-half to three times the cost of base fare and Tatkal charges respectively. “This will ensure fares are not automatically increased until all the seats in a particular slab are filled,” the official explained.

New Delhi: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will deploy five new HP Itanium servers to speed up e-ticketing operations.

IRCTC has already imported five new servers from Singapore that will change the way passengers book rail tickets on its digital platform.

On June 1, IRCTC installed two Linux-enabled servers, substantially increasing the booking capacity of e-tickets. Indian rail passengers benefited during tatkal reservation thanks to the installation of Linux-enabled servers that have doubled peak-time efficiency for booking tatkal tickets in the morning hours.

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director AK Manocha in a statement said that the five new HP Itanium servers being installed shortly in the middle layer of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) would speed up the booking of e-tickets and streamline the Next Generation E-Ticketing System (NGET).

“There are already five servers in the PRS at its middle layer. With the addition of five new servers from Singapore, their number would go up to ten,” Manocha said.

M.Srinivas M.S., Additional General Manager (Software) at IRCTC said the introduction of five new high-speed servers would substantially enhance the website performance. With the adding of five new servers, the number of concurrent users will go up from the existing 180,000 to 300,000 while the existing capacity to book around 15,000 tickets per minute will go up considerably, he said.

IRCTC is also planning to increase its network bandwidth from the existing 1.4 GB to 1.7 GB in order to enhance the performance of e-ticketing operations.

At present, 54 percent train tickets in the country are booked through the IRCTC website. The daily sale of train tickets through the portal, which is the world’s second busiest with 3 crore registered users, is around 5.5 to 6 lakhs. It has registered a record 14,800 tickets per minute.

IRCTC upgraded the website in end-April last year, facilitating 150,000 users at a time and the ability to entertain 1,000 enquiries per second.

On April 1 this year, when advance reservation period was made 120 days, IRCTC improved its record by enabling booking of 13,45,000 tickets.
