Train passengers will continue to get benefits of a service charge exemption on tickets booked online till September. The government had waived service charges after demonetisation in November last year to encourage digital modes of booking. The service charges on booking train tickets online through IRCTC range from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per ticket.
To promote digital modes of payment, the government decided post demonetisation that service charge on online booking of train tickets would be withdrawn for tickets booked from November 23, 2016, to March 31, 2017. Later, the government extended the exemption period to June 30.
Now, the exemption on service charge has been further extended till September-end this year, said a senior Railway Ministry official. The government has done this to help passengers and promote payments made through digital modes.
IRCTC, the ticketing agency of the railways, is expected to lose about Rs 500 crore a year due to the exemption. The Railway Ministry has written to the Finance Ministry seeking reimbursement of the loss. IRCTC shares half of the service charge revenue with the railways.

Customers of any bank can use this Indian Railways online ticket booking service to book online rail tickets on the bank’s website itself, without visiting any other site. ICICI Bank today announced the launch of a facility that allows users to book online rail tickets on its website www.icicibank.com

Mumbai: Indian Railways online ticket booking: ICICI Bank today announced the launch of a facility that allows users to book online rail tickets on its website icicibank.com. This facility is being offered in association with the Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC).

ICICI Bank is the first bank in the country to offer such a facility on its website.

Customers of any bank can use this Indian Railways online ticket booking service to book online rail tickets on the bank’s website itself, without visiting any other site.

Commenting on the launch, Rajiv Sabharwal, Executive Director, ICICI Bank Limited, said: “Online rail ticket booking on the Bank’s website for customers of any bank is yet another exciting service for the rapidly growing digitally savvy customer base in India. This service will soon be also available on the bank’s mobile banking app, iMobile as well as on its digital bank on mobile phone, Pockets.”

With this service, users can search for Indian Railways trains, book an e-ticket, cancel a reservation as well as check their PNR status among others. The website will display latest information for services including train options and ticket availability by connecting directly with the reservation system of the Indian Railways on a real time basis.

Users can pay for the rail tickets using their internet banking account, debit or credit card of any bank.

To avail this service, users have to do a one-time registration on the ICICI Bank’s website with their mobile number and user ID registered with IRCTC. Subsequently, they can purchase the tickets directly from the bank’s website.

Revision in Tatkal Reservation Timings From 15th June 2015

With effect from 15th June 2015, the timings for Tatkal Reservation Tickets booking will be staggered for Air-conditioned and Non Air-conditioned classes all over Indian Railways.
As per the amendment, from 15th June 2015, for all Air-conditioned classes, Tatkal reservations will open at 10:00 hrs on the previous day of journey from Train Originating Station like at present.

In case of Non Air-conditioned classes, Tatkal reservations will open at 11:00 hrs (instead of 10:00 hrs as at present) on the previous day of journey from Train Originating Station.
All types of ticket booking agents (Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra-YTSK, Rail Travelers Service Agents-RTSAs, IRCTC agents etc.,) are debarred from booking tickets during the first 30 minutes of opening of advance reservation booking i.e. from 08:00 to 08:30 hrs for General bookings, from 10:00 to 10:30 hrs for Tatkal AC tickets booking and from 11:00 to 11:30 hrs for Tatkal Non-AC bookings.

IRCTC Ticket Booking now powered by PayTM Wallet mode of payment

New Delhi: Mobile centric marketplace and payment enabler Paytm has announced a partnership with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to offer the Paytm wallet as a payment option on online train ticket booking. The move will enable users to use wallet instead of plastic based cards while booking railway tickets.

This is a big deal for Paytm which got an approval from the Reserve Bank of India last year to float a semi-closed wallet. Over the next six months, the Noida-based company is looking at 25,000+ tickets in a day using Paytm wallet on IRCTC platform.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will now offer Paytm wallet as an option to pay for train tickets online. Through this partnership, Paytm will be able to expand its reach to Tier II and Tier III markets where trains form the primary mode of long distance travel and IRCTC the default train booking platform.

IRCTC will continue offering other modes of payment along with the Paytm wallet but it might just be a convenient option for ticket bookers who know the infamous unreliability of the IRCTC platform. Also, IRCTC claims to process over 180 million transactions every year. Paytm, on the other hand, claims to have over 60 million wallet users.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of Paytm claimed that Paytm was the biggest consumer transacting platform, followed by the IRCTC. Paytm also claimed to have surpassed the volume of IRCTC transactions in November last year.

Paytm launched a semi closed wallet in January last year, almost 6 months after receiving a semi-closed prepaid wallet license, and five months after Mobikwik launched theirs. The closed wallet could only be used to purchase services provided on Paytm, and not to purchase third party goods and services.

In February this year, Paytm received a huge infusion ($575 million) of funds from Alibaba Group’s affiliate company Ant Financial Services, which picked up a 30% stake in the company. Paytm was to use the funds to grow its mobile payment ecosystem, and on commerce user base acquisition. Late last year, online cab service Uber partnered with Paytm to enable users make use of Paytm’s prepaid wallet to pay for their tax rides.

IRCTC, in a debilitating move last week, introduced new rules which would slow down ticket booking for regular customers and agents. In March, it also implemented a new rule, that would allow only one ticket per user in one login session. The restrictions will be in place between the peak hours of 8am to 12pm, during which time users will be logged out automatically after making a single e-ticket booking.

It did, however, bring some joy to its users by introducing an EMI for train tickets last year and making available Pizza Hut and KFC meals along with Dominos Pizza to its travelers to their berths earlier this year.

At present, it does more than 60 million orders of various digital and physical goods every month. When asked about the number of wallet holders currently using it for booking train ticket, Vijay added, “We have just launched and it is early days yet. Over the coming month, we will launch multiple user communication initiatives to drive awareness of this feature.”

Paytm has been coming up with a string of updates. Last week, it joined in the hyper-local game by starting grocery delivery in Bangalore.

Most recently, Paytm came with the Seller App with a Zero Commission model. What this means is that sellers on the platform don’t need to give a commission to Paytm on sales. The move seems to be a game-changing deal for Paytm, and other marketplaces like Flipkart and Snapdeal will face the heat on the merchant acquisition front.

The partnership will also drive wallet users in tier II & III cities where plastic card adoption is not encouraging. “IRCTC is already recognised and trusted across the length and breadth of the country. This partnership will provide an additional use case to new/existing users across India to use Paytm wallet for their convenience,” stated Vijay.

Paytm-IRCTC partnership is a win-win deal for both parties. While IRCTC processes 180 million transactions every year, Paytm has a strong base of 60 million wallet users who can use its wallet instead of using credit/debit card details.

Prior to Paytm, telecom major Vodafone underwent strategic partnership with IRCTC to facilitate online booking of railway tickets through mobile phones with Vodafone M-Pesa as a payment option.

New Delhi: The Indian Railways is bringing out photo identity cards for differently-abled persons to enable them to avail of concession in ticket fare for both across-the-counter and online booking of tickets.

A release from Southern Railway here said that the card was not transferable; the quantum of concession would be as per the eligibility criteria in different types of trains and class of travel based on the type of disability; the concession is admissible to a single escort if eligible on the type of disability while travelling with the card-holder and the card is valid for booking reserved tickets from counters as well as through www.irctc.co.in.

The card-holder and as the escort should carry their respective original photo identity cards during the journey. While booking tickets across the counter, the card-holder should produce the card in original and submit its photocopy.

Applications for photo ID card should be enclosed with self-attested copies of Concession Certificate as certified by the competent hospital/doctor; proof of photo identity; proof of date of birth; address proof, any one the 10 specified documents and two passport size photographs.

These applications may be submitted either by post to the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the divisions concerned or in person at railway divisional offices or submit applications in person at specified Railway Stations on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications will be accepted at railway stations for a period of two months, after which one will have to approach divisional offices for the identity cards.

Until the new card is issued, the differently-abled persons can use the existing certificate for booking tickets at the counter.

Plans are on to launch a new scheme under which physically-challenged persons will be given new identity cards. With these cards, they can now reserve railway tickets online. Physically-challenged persons must get in tough with the zonal manager office’s commercial department for the new identity cards.


Along with the filled and signed application, the applicant must submit photocopies of the following documents – railway concession certificate, physically handicapped identity card, birth certificate, and any one of the ten documents accepted as proof of residence, including voter’s identity card and family ration card. Also required are two passport-sized photographs. New identity cards will be issued to physically-challenged candidates on submission of the application.

With this card, they can now reserve railway tickets online. On submission of a photocopy of the card at the ticket counter, they can obtain tickets for the travel.
