PayTM express interest for placing Ads on 12617 Passenger Trains

PayTM express interest for placing Ads on 12617 Passenger Trains

New Delhi: Trains in India might soon sport vinyl-wrap advertisements of PayTM, if sources are to be believed. The country’s largest mobile payment platform that also has an online marketplace is betting big on the railways to grab more eyeballs and, in the process, add customers to its 135-million user base.

As an initial step, the Vijay Shekhar Sharma-run firm has submitted a technical bid for vinyl-wrap advertising slots on 23 trains in the Central and Western Zones of the railways for a period of 10 years. These slots are to likely to be auctioned next week. Apart from PayTM, others in the fray are Media on Track, JCDecaux India, and TDI International India.

According to sources, PayTM has expressed an interest for placing such ads on all 12,617 passenger trains. While PayTM could use the space at its discretion and even sub-lease to other companies, it says it has no such plans as of now. According to railways officials, they’re expecting a revenue of about Rs 300 crore per annum from vinyl-wrap advertisements.

“The railways has huge potential for advertising as it runs about 13,000 trains a day, covering about 63,000 km, with passenger traffic of 23 million. PayTM is keen as this may grab more eyeballs than sponsoring a cricket match,” said a person close to the development.

The e-commerce giant, owned by One97 Communication, bagged the title sponsorship of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for Rs 203 crore, or Rs 2.42 crore per match, for four years. According to sources, PayTM is also keen on participating in the upcoming auction for setting up executive lounges in railway stations. However, the firm would look at these at a later stage.

PayTM is one of the few start-ups to have made major inroads into the Indian Railways in the past year. It is the only mobile wallet that allows users to book train tickets online through the app and website courtesy its tie-up with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

The railways is planning to increase its non-fare revenue through advertisements. By March, it is likely to come up advertisement slots on a high-tech centralised network of 100,000 screens across 2,175 stations. It is also looking to tap outdoor advertisements across road-over-bridges, road-under-bridges and level crossings on a zonal basis.

In recent months, PayTM has seen exponential growth in its travel marketplace. Its bus tickets business recently broke even, while the hotel booking category is expected to start generating profits soon. “Our alliance with IRCTC is a major leap, as it completes the spectrum of air, road and rail ticket booking solutions available on Paytm. This is a significant milestone in our efforts to build India’s largest travel marketplace,” Abhishek Rajan, Vice-President, PayTM, said.

Indian Railways is also working on a plan to switch over to cash-less electronic payments for all its transactions. While around a half of all passenger tickets are currently sold through IRCTC, the new plan envisages bringing the remaining half, sold through PRS counters, under the electronic net.

The implementation of the new plan would also bring the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) under the electronic net. Sources said PayTM has also presented railways with solutions to capture the UTS segment.

Delhi Metro:Smart Card top-up with Paytm Wallet

Delhi Metro:Smart Card top-up with Paytm Wallet

Delhi Metro | Now top-up your DMRC Smart Card with PayTM e-Wallet App

New Delhi: The top up (recharge) facility of Delhi Metro’s smart cards will now be possible through the popular mobile based e-wallet application, Paytm.

As per this new arrangement, Delhi Metro’s commuters will be able to top up their smart cards through the Paytm e-wallet. For recharging the cards, they would simply have to log into their Paytm e-wallets and an option for the top up of the Delhi Metro smart cards will appear on the mobile screens.

The facility was inaugurated today by DMRC’s Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh in the presence of Paytm’s CEO, Sh. Vijay Shekhar Sharma and other senior officials from DMRC and Paytm.

This new facility will be of great convenience to the commuters since; this will allow them to recharge their smart cards through their mobile phones. The transactions will be completely safe and the card or net banking details will be saved only once by the App. Recharge through this facility will be fast and convenient.

In addition, commuters will also have the option of getting their cards recharged through Paytm by visiting www.dmrcsmartcard.com. They can simply visit the website and an option for recharge through Paytm will appear on the screen. However, after recharge through Paytm, commuters will have to validate the recharge by tapping their cards at the Automatic Vending Machines (AVMs), which are available now at all the Metro stations of the Delhi Metro network.

Top up of the Delhi Metro smart cards through credit cards/ debit cards and net banking is already available for the commuters. Last year, DMRC also launched the top up facility of smart cards through ICICI Bank’s Business Correspondent Networks (Outlets) located across Delhi-NCR.

There are 1.6 crore smart cards in circulation and about ten thousand new smart cards are sold everyday across the Delhi Metro network. Minimum top up of ₹ 100 will be available and recharge up to ₹ 1000 will be possible (only multiples of ₹ 50).

Paytm is India’s largest mobile e-commerce website, which offers day-to-day recharge solutions for a range of products and offers.

Soon, Pay for Delhi Metro Rides with PayTM Wallet

Soon, Pay for Delhi Metro Rides with PayTM Wallet

paytm dmrcNew Delhi: The next time you take a Metro ride, you might be able to pay for it using your Paytm wallet. A new token currently being tested by the DMRC will allow you to travel, automatically deducting the fare from your Paytm balance, instead of making you repeatedly recharge a Metro card.
We reached out to Paytm to find out more, but while the company did not officially comment on the matter, a representative told us that the DMRC tie up is underway, and will be announced in the near future.

We were told that the specifics of the integration, such as the accounts to be credited, were still to be worked out, and both Paytm and DMRC are in the process of working out the details. We also tried calling the DMRC Chief PR Officer seeking more details from the organisation, but there has been no response till the time of filing this report.

Paytm already has a tie up with the Mumbai Metro that allows you to recharge your Mumbai Metro card online.

The DMRC also has an app called Offer World, which allows you to check the balance of your Metro card, top it up online, and includes offers, that pay you DMRC credits for your card.

The app allows other companies to advertise on it, by incentivising app installs – you download sponsor applications to earn money, so, for example, if you were to download the Meru Cabs app, you would get Rs. 20, while downloading MakeMyTrip would earn you Rs. 10, added to your metro card.

The DMRC also has a website, DMRC Smart Card, where you can recharge your Metro card online. The advantage of Paytm integration as described at the start of this article is that you would not have to maintain multiple wallets – if you already use Paytm for recharges and other services such as Uber, then you only need to keep a single wallet filled with cash to use for the Metro as well.

IRCTC Ticket Booking now powered by PayTM Wallet mode of payment

New Delhi: Mobile centric marketplace and payment enabler Paytm has announced a partnership with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to offer the Paytm wallet as a payment option on online train ticket booking. The move will enable users to use wallet instead of plastic based cards while booking railway tickets.

This is a big deal for Paytm which got an approval from the Reserve Bank of India last year to float a semi-closed wallet. Over the next six months, the Noida-based company is looking at 25,000+ tickets in a day using Paytm wallet on IRCTC platform.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will now offer Paytm wallet as an option to pay for train tickets online. Through this partnership, Paytm will be able to expand its reach to Tier II and Tier III markets where trains form the primary mode of long distance travel and IRCTC the default train booking platform.

IRCTC will continue offering other modes of payment along with the Paytm wallet but it might just be a convenient option for ticket bookers who know the infamous unreliability of the IRCTC platform. Also, IRCTC claims to process over 180 million transactions every year. Paytm, on the other hand, claims to have over 60 million wallet users.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of Paytm claimed that Paytm was the biggest consumer transacting platform, followed by the IRCTC. Paytm also claimed to have surpassed the volume of IRCTC transactions in November last year.

Paytm launched a semi closed wallet in January last year, almost 6 months after receiving a semi-closed prepaid wallet license, and five months after Mobikwik launched theirs. The closed wallet could only be used to purchase services provided on Paytm, and not to purchase third party goods and services.

In February this year, Paytm received a huge infusion ($575 million) of funds from Alibaba Group’s affiliate company Ant Financial Services, which picked up a 30% stake in the company. Paytm was to use the funds to grow its mobile payment ecosystem, and on commerce user base acquisition. Late last year, online cab service Uber partnered with Paytm to enable users make use of Paytm’s prepaid wallet to pay for their tax rides.

IRCTC, in a debilitating move last week, introduced new rules which would slow down ticket booking for regular customers and agents. In March, it also implemented a new rule, that would allow only one ticket per user in one login session. The restrictions will be in place between the peak hours of 8am to 12pm, during which time users will be logged out automatically after making a single e-ticket booking.

It did, however, bring some joy to its users by introducing an EMI for train tickets last year and making available Pizza Hut and KFC meals along with Dominos Pizza to its travelers to their berths earlier this year.

At present, it does more than 60 million orders of various digital and physical goods every month. When asked about the number of wallet holders currently using it for booking train ticket, Vijay added, “We have just launched and it is early days yet. Over the coming month, we will launch multiple user communication initiatives to drive awareness of this feature.”

Paytm has been coming up with a string of updates. Last week, it joined in the hyper-local game by starting grocery delivery in Bangalore.

Most recently, Paytm came with the Seller App with a Zero Commission model. What this means is that sellers on the platform don’t need to give a commission to Paytm on sales. The move seems to be a game-changing deal for Paytm, and other marketplaces like Flipkart and Snapdeal will face the heat on the merchant acquisition front.

The partnership will also drive wallet users in tier II & III cities where plastic card adoption is not encouraging. “IRCTC is already recognised and trusted across the length and breadth of the country. This partnership will provide an additional use case to new/existing users across India to use Paytm wallet for their convenience,” stated Vijay.

Paytm-IRCTC partnership is a win-win deal for both parties. While IRCTC processes 180 million transactions every year, Paytm has a strong base of 60 million wallet users who can use its wallet instead of using credit/debit card details.

Prior to Paytm, telecom major Vodafone underwent strategic partnership with IRCTC to facilitate online booking of railway tickets through mobile phones with Vodafone M-Pesa as a payment option.
