New Tatkal norms come into effect

Booking for AC starts at 10 a.m., sleeper class at 11 a.m.

The new timings for booking Tatkal tickets introduced by the Railways came into effect on Monday.

The timings for booking tickets in air-conditioned coaches through Tatkal quota commences at 10 a.m. on the day before the journey. The tickets in sleeper class coaches through Tatkal quota can be booked only from 11 a.m. on the day before the journey.

Along with the revised timings, all types of ticketing agents have been barred by the Railways from booking reservation tickets during the first 30 minutes of opening of the booking counters, that is from 8 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. This is to ensure the needy and the general public get the benefits of the Tatkal quota.

New servers

Meanwhile, the IRCTC has added two high-capacity servers to double peak-time efficiency for issuing Tatkal tickets. With this the booking capacity through the IRCTC website has gone up to over 14,000 tickets per minute from the existing 7,200.

Tatkal reservations on all trains in the railway network of the country come to roughly 4,00,000 tickets (around 2.5 lakh PNRs).

Around 54 per cent train tickets in the country are booked through the IRCTC website.

The average daily sale of tickets through the portal is 5.5 lakh to 6 lakh. With two more servers, the IRCTC has 17 servers while the existing 1.4 GB bandwidth has increased by 25 per cent.

Now book Tatkal Tickets for AC, non-AC class separately

Indian Railways introduced changes in the tatkal tickets booking timings, as now Tatkal tickets for AC and non-AC class will be booked on separate timings. This change will be implemented from June 15, as per the circular issued by director passengers marketing, railway board.

At present, the booking under Tatkal Scheme opens at 10am on the previous day of journey and the booking for all the classes are done at the same time. The Tatkal tickets usually get sold within few minutes after opening of window. But, now to facilitate the non-AC passengers and to decrease the unnecessary rush at windows, timings for both the classes have been separated.

Booking for AC class will be done from 10-11am and for non-AC booking timings will be from 11am-12 noon.

Besides, to keep check on the touts and other money-making agencies, instructions have been passed that now all types of ticketing agents like  Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra (YTSK), (RTSA), Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) agents will be debarred from booking tickets during the first 30 minutes of opening of booking from 8-8:30 am for general bookings, from 10 to 10:30 am and 11 to 11:30 am for tatkal booking in AC and non-AC classes, respectively.

BRS Nagar resident Rahul Awasthi said, “Though it remains hard to get tickets confirmed under Tatkal System, as tickets get sold out within a minute or two, but still as passengers will have an option to go for non-AC class, it will benefit them for sure. Besides, decision to debarring ticket agents from booking in the first half hour of booking will also benefit the common passengers.”

Railway station superintendent Yashwant Singh said, “We didn’t receive a formal notice for the same, but as per the information this system will benefit the passengers and will keep tight trap on touts.

Revision in Tatkal Reservation Timings From 15th June 2015

With effect from 15th June 2015, the timings for Tatkal Reservation Tickets booking will be staggered for Air-conditioned and Non Air-conditioned classes all over Indian Railways.
As per the amendment, from 15th June 2015, for all Air-conditioned classes, Tatkal reservations will open at 10:00 hrs on the previous day of journey from Train Originating Station like at present.

In case of Non Air-conditioned classes, Tatkal reservations will open at 11:00 hrs (instead of 10:00 hrs as at present) on the previous day of journey from Train Originating Station.
All types of ticket booking agents (Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra-YTSK, Rail Travelers Service Agents-RTSAs, IRCTC agents etc.,) are debarred from booking tickets during the first 30 minutes of opening of advance reservation booking i.e. from 08:00 to 08:30 hrs for General bookings, from 10:00 to 10:30 hrs for Tatkal AC tickets booking and from 11:00 to 11:30 hrs for Tatkal Non-AC bookings.
