Railway to provide Dustbins in all 60000 Coaches soon: Prabhu

Railway to provide Dustbins in all 60000 Coaches soon: Prabhu

New Delhi: All the 60,000 coaches in Indian Railways will soon be provided with user-friendly dustbins, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Friday said. Barring air-condition (AC) and a few non-AC sleeper coaches, majority of coaches currently don’t have dustbins resulting in problems in disposing garbage by the passengers in moving trains.

“All the 60,000 coaches will be provided with dustbins and the target will be reached as soon as possible,” Prabhu said, reminding about the promise made in the Railway Budget this year, while addressing a conference on ‘rail coach interior’ here. Currently, both AC and non-AC LHB coaches are being provided with two dustbins at both ends of the bogie.

All conventional AC coaches manufactured at Integrated Coach Factory at Chennai are also equipped with dustbins. Stating that a lot of progress has been made in making passenger coaches more user-friendly, he laid emphasis on clean toilets, linen, curtains and making the seat, the ladders to climb the berths more user-friendly. Prabhu also suggested developing a model for revenue generation tapping the opportunities that a contemporary looking coach can generate.

Indian Railways carry over 2.5 crore passenger every day where travelling hour for a passenger in sleeper class coach is about 16 hours. Keeping this facts in mind, he said, the emphasis should be on “designing the entire architecture of services catering to all including the poor”. He said the National Institute of Fashion Technology and National Institute of Design are also making progress in design of the coach interiors.

Raebareli Coach Factory to start Full-fledged Production by year end

Raebareli Coach Factory to start Full-fledged Production by year end

Rae Bareli (RBL): Raebareli rail coach factory might start full-fledged production by end of the year. After starting production in 2011, the factory has produced only 375 assembled coaches so far.  The ‘synchronization’ of machines is on at the factory which will ensure full production, said sources. The factory was set-up to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of coaches. Indian Railways need about 5,000 coaches in a year. RCF, Kapoorthala and Integral coach factory, Chennai together roll out some 2,500 coaches.
Raebareli factory, say sources, has the capacity to produce 1,500 coaches if it is made to function in three shifts.  But so far the Lalganj factory in VIP constituency Raebareli has not come on its own. It is still dependent on RCF, Kapoorthala for 50% raw material.  In June last year, the factory was declared independent by the centre so that it could manufacture coaches independently without entirely depending on government fund. But that has not boost production. “This year it has to manufacture 500 coaches,” said sources. The factory produces only LHB coaches. LHB is a light weight coach based on German technology that can improve the speed of train and is the latest requirement of Indian Railways.

Railways incur about Rs 2.73 crore in manufacturing a single AC 3 tier LHB coach and Rs 2.63 crore in manufacturing an AC 2 tier LHB coach. An empty shell costs around Rs 50 to 60 lakh.

Budge Budge Coach Bogie Frame Factory to supply 600 LHB Bogie Frames to Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala

Budge Budge Coach Bogie Frame Factory to supply 600 LHB Bogie Frames to Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala

Budge Budge (BGB): The bogie manufacturing factory at Budge Budge, the foundation stone for which was laid by Mamata on January 11, 2011, commenced production in March, 2015 and will supply 600 LHB bogie frames to Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala every year as planned.

Production has also started at the DEMU factory at Haldia and the two at Dankuni supplying spares to Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi and Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW).

“The unit at Budge Budge was originally called the AC Container & Bogie Manufacturing Factory and the investment was to be Rs.59.3 Crore. Now it is known as the Coach Bogie Frame Factory and the project cost has gone up to Rs 149 crore. The factory is manufacturing FIAT bogie frames that offer superior riding quality, higher safety and have lower maintenance requirements. These bogie frames will facilitate Indian Railways’ plan to switch over from the manufacture of conventional steel coaches to LHB stainless steel ones,” a senior official said.

Indian Railways used coaches primarily manufactured by Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, till some were imported from Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) in Germany. These stainless steel coaches with more riding comfort were initially used in the Rajdhani Expresses. Later, the LHB coaches started being manufactured at RCF under licence from Alstom LHB GmbH (Alstom took over the company in 1998). The Indian Railways then took a decision to switch over from conventional coaches to LHB ones for all important mail/express trains.

The unit of CLW at Dankuni has also started production and is expected to roll out the first high horsepower electric locomotive by the end of this year.

New EMU Rake with indigenous Electrical Systems powered by Medha Servo Drives put for trials

New EMU Rake with indigenous Electrical Systems powered by Medha Servo Drives put for trials

Mumbai: Come August and Mumbai will see the first-ever local train — EMU in railway lingo — whose electrical systems are completely indigenous. So far, all Mumbai locals with the modern Alternating Current 3-phase IGBT transmission technology have been powered either by Siemens or Bombardier.

The new rake, powered by Hyderabad-based firm Medha Servo Drives, will be a major test for the Indian Railways, according to officials, as it looks towards increasing the production of local trainsfor various metros without depending on imported technology. The new rake developed by Medha Servo Drives has been under construction for the past couple of years and is now in its final stages, said officials in the know.

A top-ranking railway official said that the rake, the first of the two being built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, should in all probabilities be sent to Mumbai by August. It will be first run on Western Railway (WR). “The Mumbai suburban railway is one of the densest and most demanding railway sections anywhere in the world. If this train, with Indian-made electrical traction motors and train control mechanisms, is successful in Mumbai, then it is going to be a game-changer for the railways. It will truly be the start of the ‘Make in India’ phase in the Electrical Multiple Units (EMU) sector for the railways,” said the official.

The rake will be a completely stainless steel one, like the two Bombardier rakes currently running on WR, but will have some design changes — mostly cosmetic — from both the Siemens and Bombardier rakes, said officials.

While Mumbai’s suburban system has had Indian-made power systems, mostly by Bhopal-based BHEL in the good old days when the traction on both Central and Western Railways was 1,500 Volt Direct Current (DC), conversion to 25,000 Alternating Current (AC) meant Mumbai’s locals either had Siemens or Bombardier power mechanisms, both multi-national companies.

“When it comes to MNCs, there are problems with patents, transfer of technology and the like. It is always better to have local expertise as, apart from ease of business, it leads to huge savings in foreign exchange. The building of local trains that was well and truly local was long overdue and it is good that the railways is moving in that direction,” said another official.

ICF also produced 20 fully furnished LHB Coaches (shells from RCF). 12 of these coaches are now in service on the new Chandigarh-New Delhi Shatabdi Express. Fabrication of LHB shells has started from February 2013. For the first time, a diesel multiple unit with 3-Phase IGBT traction converter has been put into service. It is equipped with ten stainless steel body coaches – two power cars each with 1600 HP on-board engine, and 8 trailer/ vendor cars. The transmission was developed indigenously by Medha Servodrives, Hyderabad.

Railways mulls JVs for high-speed coaches, locos

Railways mulls JVs for high-speed coaches, locos

Railway Board is considering going for joint ventures possibly with the private sector to manufacture high-end coaches and locomotives used in long haul trains under the Make in India initiative. Currently, these are made in Railways's own factories.

Collaboration has been proposed for particularly producing specialised High Horse Power (HHP) locomotives and LHB coaches which are used in air-conditioned trains like Rajdhani and Duronto.

The thinking comes at a time when the Railways is planning to completely shift to high-speed LHB coaches from conventional ones, but failing to achieve the objective mainly because of lack of enough indigenous production capabilities.

It was recently highlighted by dna how lack of production capabilities within the country has now created a crisis of supply of wheels for LHB coaches, all of which are imported, forcing the government to request foreign suppliers like Stork International of Austria and KLW Wheelco of Switzerland to speed up shipments before the scheduled time.

While the wheels are fully imported, the coaches, based on designs of Linke Hofmann Busch of Germany, are now manufactured within the country, but only at the Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka in Bangalore.

Railway Board's additional member (production unit) Arvind Khare has now proposed to manufacture these coaches through the joint venture route also.

"Additional member (production unit) referred to the Make in India policy of the central government, a move that will make the country stand on its own and reduce the import dependence on other countries. He suggested joint ventures to make the policy a success in areas like LHB coaches and HHP locomotives," a document of the Railway Board dated March 31 said.

While LHB coaches are for passenger trains, the HHP locomotives are needed to move cargo as well, and would be increasingly deployed on the upcoming freight corridors. Promoting facilities to manufacture HHP locos is one such area identified by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu in its budget speech.

And in March, the ministry allowed up to 74% foreign direct investment in the proposed HHP loco manufacturing unit at two locations in Bihar.

Rail Coach Factory to roll out coaches with bio-toilets

Rail Coach Factory to roll out coaches with bio-toilets

Kapurthala (KXH): The Rail Coach Factory (RCF), based at Kapurthala in Punjab, has decided to fit bio-toilets in all the 1,600 coaches manufactured by it in the next financial year. RCF is a coach manufacturing unit of the Indian Railways.

In 2014-15, it has fitted 950 coaches with bio-toilets, out of the total 1,300 coaches it manufactured till date. Overall, it has fitted over 2,400 coaches with bio-toilets as on date.

Stressing on the need to work towards Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat’ drive, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his Budget speech said 17,000 more toilets would be replaced by bio-toilets, also called green toilets. A senior official in Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala said, “From the next financial year, all the coaches, including conventional and LHB  (Linke Hoffman Busch) coaches, will be fitted with bio-toilets.”

In bio-toilets, a colony of anaerobic bacteria convert human waste mainly into water and small amount of gases (methane and CO2). The gases emit into the atmosphere and waste is discharged after chlorination onto the tracks. Human waste, thus, does not fall on the railway track.

This procedure is environment-friendly and improves the working condition for the railway track staff. According to railway officials, defacement and corrosion of railway tracks by night soil lead to loss of crores of rupees. Bio-toilets have the advantage of preventing corrosion of railway tracks, as it prevents discharge of human waste.

RCF, in association with Defence Research and Development Establishment, developed this cost-effective indigenous technology, to treat faecal waste in coaches.

The technology provides an almost maintenance free and a low cost solution to the problem of open defecation on the railway tracks.

On being asked the production of coaches in current fiscal year, he added,” We are targeting to produce 1523 coaches this year against the installed capacity of 1,500 coaches per annum. Till date we have produced 1300 coaches of different variants like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and other mail/express trains

ICF to roll out more LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) Stainless Steel Coaches

Integral Coach Factory to roll out more Stainless Steel Coaches

Perambur (PER): All coaches that are rolled out by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here will be made of stainless steel by 2019.

Last fiscal, 25 LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) stainless steel coaches were made. This year, 75 coaches will be rolled out, Ashok K Agarwal, General Manager, ICF, told reporters here on Tuesday.

By 2015-16, it will be scaled up to 300 coaches and the next year, 600. While the conventional coaches have a lifespan of 25 years, stainless steel coaches would increase the lifespan by 10 years.

“We will also be introducing bi-directional swing doors for all AC coaches. The railway board has requested us to work on the design and we have submitted it,” Mr. Agarwal said. This would allow passengers to exit easily in case of emergency.

At present, doors in AC coaches open only inwards. For the existing coaches the swing doors will be retrofitted at the maintenance workshop. The process will begin in six months.

The ICF, which was set up in 1955 with Swiss collaboration, has rolled out 48,708 coaches till September 2014. Last year, 1,622 coaches were made here, for which it received ‘Best Production Unit’ award from the Railway Ministry.

This fiscal, the Chennai unit has made 824 coaches in the first six months, a 24.5 per cent jump when compared to the corresponding period last year.

“The railway board target for this year is 1,696 coaches. We will end up making 1,710 coaches,” Mr. Agarwal said.

On why the ICF does not participate in Metro rail bids, Mr. Agarwal, said, “The railway board decides participation in such bids. In future if any client approaches us, we will take it to the board.”
