BOOKING OF SEASON TICKETS AND PLATFORM TICKETS ON MOBILE APPLICATION

As part of “Operation Five Minutes”, initiative of the Hon’ble Minister of Railways announced during 2015 Budget Speech, Indian Railways launched a mobile ticket booking facility for unreserved travel. This facility was first opened on Southern Railways and the Chennai Suburban section was covered in June 2015. This application enables passengers to avoid standing in queue for to purchase their journey ticket and also avoid usage of paper for printing of ticket. Users are now booking tickets using this application for journey over the suburban section and on an average 1,200 passengers are booking journey tickets, using this application.

Fifty two percent (52%) of passengers on the suburban section travel with season tickets. To help reduce the waiting time in queue for these customers, CRIS has further developed for Indian Railway, the Season Tickets feature on the same application.

Season Tickets can now be booked between pair of stations lying over Chennai Suburban, using the same application and will be valid only from the next day of the booking day unlike journey / regular ticket. Season Ticket can be booked from any location and there is no restriction in booking within the station or within the 5 km radius applicable to journey ticket, which was restricted in for journey tickets due to Geo fencing. This application also facilitates the renewal of the season tickets purchased already through the UTS ticket.

Just like journey tickets booked on this app, the Season ticket too can be carried on the phone and shown when requested for by ticket checking staff.

The details of how to book season tickets is available on Southern Railway Website (www.sr.indianrailways.gov.in)

Further, now booking of Platform Ticket has also been developed on this application and enabled for 5 major stations (Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Mambalam, Tambaram and Perambur).

For booking of platform ticket, the Geo fenced area is modified slightly so that platform tickets can only be booked within a radius of 2 km around the station and cannot be booked inside the station and along the track.

With these two new features – i.e. Season Ticket booking and renewal on the mobile, and booking of platform tickets, users can not only avoid counter queues completely but they can carry the ticket on their phones too.

Soon, Insert Coins and Cash Into Machines to Get Train Tickets

Soon, Insert Coins and Cash Into Machines to Get Train Tickets

CHENNAI: Suburban stations in Chennai will soon get Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVM) where commuters can insert Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins and get tickets within 60 seconds.

This is a part of the Railway Ministry’s plan to reduce the time spent by customers standing in serpentine queues to procure tickets at station counters. This is the second such scheme for commuters in the Chennai suburban train network, after the mobile-ticketing facility was introduced earlier this year.

An official circular from the Railway Board stated that platform and unreserved tickets can be procured from the Cash-Coin and Smart Card operated Ticket Vending Machines (CoTVM), which will be unmanned. Officials of the Madras Division of Southern Railway indicated that the headquarters had been notified and the machines would be in place by next month. “We have zeroed in on a few locations. Initially, there might be a provision for only first-class tickets as we would be trying out the machines on a pilot basis,” said an official.

As per the official procedure, the CoTVM will have slots to accept Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins as well as notes of denomination from Rs 5 to Rs 1,000. Instructions will be displayed on the machine to indicate which notes and coins would be accepted.

The passenger would have to submit the exact ticket fare in notes and coins inside the machine within 60 seconds. In case the entire amount has not been inserted within the stipulated time, the transaction will be cancelled and the amount will be returned.

No additional booking charge will be taken for tickets bought from the CoTVM. The printed ticket will have all the details similar to those obtained from the counter.  Season tickets, platform tickets, second-class tickets for maximum of four passengers and first-class ticket for one passenger can be bought from the CoTVM, said the official circular. The machines would also have a provision for booking tickets using smart cards, which can be procured only from specific railway counters.

The CoTVM is likely to attract the majority of the one million daily commuters, who don’t have access to smartphones and continue to spend at least 10 minutes in the queues at ticket counters during peak hours. “CoTVM corrects one major flaw of the mobile-ticketing system. Season tickets can’t be procured through m-ticketing. They form around 60 per cent of the daily commuters. CoTVM will offer them that facility,” an official stated.

Platform tickets on cellphones soon

Platform tickets on cellphones soon

While the cost of a platform ticket is low — Rs 10 each currently — officials expect the vendors to make up the difference through the high volume of transactions involved.

The long, winding queues to buy platform tickets in railway stations may soon start to shrink — the government is moving to make them available online. The options under consideration include allowing platform tickets to be purchased via mobile phones or through the IRCTC portal, a Railways Ministry official told The Indian Express.
The acknowledgment of payment, which will be sent to the buyer’s mobile phone, can be shown to the personnel manning the gates at the stations, the official added. “IRCTC will be given the detailed modalities to be worked out once the Railway Board approves the proposal.”

Platform Ticket Hike May given room to Misuse the Passenger Train Ticket

Platform Ticket Hike May given room to Misuse the Passenger Train Ticket

Salem (SA): The hike in platform ticket fare from Rs.5 to Rs.10 has put the Railway authorities in a quandary.

The hike from April 1 is not with the intention of augmenting the revenue, but to reduce the congestion on the platforms in the railway stations by dissuading people from entering the station.

However, the hike has put the Railway authorities in a predicament, with the platform ticket becoming more costly (Rs. 5 more) than that of a ticket for the nearest station in a passenger train. While the ticket from Salem Junction to Salem Town costs just Rs. 5, the lowest ticket fare, the platform ticket costs Rs. 10.

As such, people visiting the railway stations to receive or see off their friends and relatives are expected to opt for the passenger train ticket for the nearest station, instead of the platform ticket and thus save Rs. 5.

Moreover, the purchase of passenger train ticket has one more advantage. The passenger ticket is valid for the whole day, while the validity of a platform ticket purchased for Rs. 10 is only for a couple of hours, says E. Lakshman, a consumer activist.

Misuse

No doubt, the hike in the platform ticket fare has given room for people to misuse the passenger train tickets. However, the Railways has chalked out a strategy to check the misuse of passenger train tickets.

A senior official of the Salem Railway Division told that the passenger train tickets of lowest fare are issued only during the timings of the trains. They will not be issued when no passenger train is scheduled to leave the particular station.

Moreover, the checking staff have been directed to intensify checking on the platforms.

The passenger train ticket holders will be allowed to move only on the platforms where the passenger trains are received and halted. Those with passenger train tickets found moving on the other platforms will be considered as ticketless travellers and will be fined as per the rules.

Platform Tickets in Railway Stations to be Costlier from April 1, 2015

Platform Tickets in Railway Stations to be Costlier from April 1, 2015

New Delhi: The railway platform ticket is going to be costlier–Rs 10–from April 1.  “The rate of platform ticket will be increased from Rs 5 to Rs 10 per per person from April, 2015,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.

The official said the Divisional Railway Managers (DRM) have been empowered to increase the rate of platform ticket beyond Rs 10 to regulate rush at platform during specific requirements like mela and rally.
