Do’s and Don’ts for Train Passengers with pre-recorded announcements during the journey -Railway Minister

Do’s and Don’ts for Train Passengers with pre-recorded announcements during the journey

New Delhi: Travelling in train in India is set to become a different experience as the Railway Ministry has decided to educate train passengers on conduct while travelling.

Instructions will be given to them on the do’s and don’ts through pre-recorded announcements during the journey. The decision will be initially carried out on elite trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto which have public announcement systems installed on board.

The list of instructions which has been finalised for the passengers includes, among others, prohibition of  smoking, committing nuisance under the effect of alcohol and maintaining cleanliness.

The travellers will also be alerted against accepting eatables from strangers and giving tips to service providers. If they insist on tips, the travellers should lodge a complaint with the checking staff members present on board. The instruction on cleanliness will have a touch of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and appeal would be made to join the mission by keeping the stations and trains clean.

Suggestions on disposing of water bottles after use by crushing them will also be given. Messing the clean ambience could also invite penalties, the passengers will be told. The travellers will be informed that as per the Railway Act, anybody found littering the railway premises can be slapped with a fine up to Rs 500.

Delhi Metro to fine Rs.200 for ‘reverse journey’ from ITO

Delhi Metro to fine Rs.200 for ‘reverse journey’ from ITO

New Delhi: Days after opening the ITO Metro station, DMRC is struggling to outwit commuters. As you wait for the train to ITO at Mandi House station, a steady flow of announcements greets the rider. The one repeated often is a warning though: those found getting on the ITO train but heading to Badarpur will be fined.

DMRC officials said since the new station opened, some passengers have taken to coming till ITO, though they have to go to Badarpur, in order to get a seat. To discourage this practice, Delhi Metro has been making announcements warning commuters of a Rs 200 penalty for taking the “reverse” journey.

“This is a temporary phenomenon as the section has just opened. Not too many passengers do this. Passengers are being advised via announcements not to indulge in such reverse journey practices and a special drive has been started to fine errant passengers,” said a DMRC spokesperson. And while no one has been fined so far, Delhi Metro has said it will start penalizing offenders “soon”.

Commuters have a different take though. For many, the problem of travelling to Badarpur in a crowded metro is solved if they just go one station ahead in the opposite direction. “During peak hour, though Mandi House is the first station on the way to Badarpur, it’s still very crowded. However, if you just travel till ITO, the trains are mostly empty and you get a seat,” said a commuter.

Since every third train is to ITO, most commuters prefer to add a station to their journey rather than miss out on a seat.

Incidentally, ITO station has been seeing a steady ridership of 6,000 and above this week. While the ridership was 6,972 on Thursday, it was 6,954 on Wednesday.

IRCTC writes Letter to Railway Board on penalty

IRCTC writes Letter to Railway Board on penalty

New Delhi: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has written a letter to the Railway Board a day after it was penalised with Rs.1.00 Lakh penalty after a cockroach was found in food served aboard the Kolkata Rajdhani last month.

In its letter, the IRCTC stated that the railways should not treat them as licensee agency and it was the railways, which do not keep its coaches clean. The agency has cited the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Indian Railways (IR) and IRCTC on January 17, 2007.

Railway authorities had cracked the whip by slapping heavy fines totalling Rs 11.5 lakh on nine caterers, including IRCTC, for serving “poor quality” food in trains.

A senior official of IRCTC from its headquarters told: “We have written a letter to the Railway Board in which we have told them not to treat us as licensee agency as IRCTC is very much part of the Indian Railways and it was clearly mentioned in the MoU signed. As per the MoU, the IRCTC is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) made by the Ministry of Railways.”

A senior official of railway board in New Delhi said it has received the letter and within one month they will send a reply to the IRCTC.

Besides the IRCTC, RK Associates, Sunshine Caterers, Satyam Caterers and Brindavan Food Products were among those penalised. On July 20, a woman passenger on the Kolkata Rajdhani claimed she found a cockroach in her meal served at Mughalsarai.

About the other details mentioned in the letter, the official added: “We have also mentioned that the cleaning is not done by the IRCTC but the railways. The IRCTC is an expert in catering. It was railways, which do not keep the coaches clean. The IRCTC has demanded that at the time of cleaning the coaches, our officials should be allowed to be present to monitor the cleaning process.”
