Metro Rail ready for trial run from Mettuguda to Begumpet

Hyderabad: L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) announced that DVS Raju, Chief Electrical Inspector (CEIG), Government of India, for Hyderabad Metro Rail, conducted the statutory inspection of Overhead Electric Traction System (OETS) between Begumpet and Mettuguda Metro stations and accorded sanction for Energisation of OETS.
The traction system is fed from the 132Kv/25Kv Receiving Substation (RSS) of the Hyderabad Metro Rail at Uppal depot. Incoming supply to this RSS is drawn from 220Kv/132Kv main substation of TRANSCO.
DVS Raju after conducting the inspection said, “Energisation of the OETS will facilitate conducting of oscillation tests of the Metro trains by Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Ministry of Railways, Government of India. The RDSO team will conduct tests in this section and will issue a certificate on satisfactory tests. Thereafter LTMRHL will conduct trial runs on the Metro trains in this section.”
The sections from Nagole to Mettuguda and Miyapur to SR Nagar are already energised, after obtaining sanction of CEIG and trial runs were completed.
“It is indeed a matter of delight for Hyderabad Metro Rail Project and we are thankful to Mr. DVS Raju, Chief Electrical Inspector (CEIG) for conducting the statutory inspection and of OETS from Begumpet to Mettuguda. Larsen & Toubro’s delayed Rs 16,000 crore metro rail project in Hyderabad

Larsen & Toubro’s delayed Rs 16,000 crore metro rail project in Hyderabad
Rating Agencies says L&T Hyderabad Metro project prone to Risks
Hyderabad: Larsen & Toubro’s delayed Rs 16,000 crore metro rail project in Hyderabad is prone to significant risk in terms of the time it will take to complete as well as revenues it will earn thereafter, rating agencies have said.

The project has suffered substantial delays owing to various constraints including Telangana government’s advocated route chang es. Underscoring the apprehensions repeatedly expressed by L&T Metro Rail on the project’s economic viability, India Ratings said said it was sceptical about the actual usage of the metro rail in terms of ridership.

India Ratings, which recently assigned AA (SO) rating for Rs 1,000 crore of debt instruments that indicate high degree of safety on timely servicing of financial obligation thanks to unconditional and irrevocable undertaking from L&T, has highlighted many risks.

It said the project’s physical progress was only 49.6% at the end of June 2015 compared to the planned progress of 73.5%.

ICRA, another rating agency that assigned AA rating for Rs 1,250 crore of non-fund facilities, said, “With the project execution delayed due to alignment disputes with government of Telangana, the project COD (commercial operation date) is expected to be delayed by six to 12 months from the targeted date of June 2017.”

It further said, “Speedy execution without any further delays cost overruns as well as targeted ramp up of fare and non-fare revenues post COD would be critical for the credit profile of the SPV and IDPL (L&T Infrastructure Development Projects Limited).”

India Ratings said “despite a detailed analysis of various factors likely to impinge on patronage, cash flows remain vulnerable to forecasting limitations”. It said, “Although the project has a strong economic rationale, the actual usage of the metro rail in terms of ridership and growth will become clear only after the project becomes operational.”

A senior L&T Metro Rail finance official, who did not wish to be named, said highlighting the risks associated with the project was routine for the rating agencies.”We could secure better rating for the bonds since they were guaranteed by our promoters.

A senior official from Hyderabad Metro Rail Corporation, who did not wish to be named, said that in case of Bangalore Metro, none of its Metro Rail routes touches the IT Corridors of Bangalore.  Bangalore enjoys strong global IT power with majority of the residents employed in IT Sectors as well, whereas none of the IT Corridors have Metro Rail.  In case of Hyderabad, it is different, as majority of the routes on the Nagole-Hitec City, LB Nagar-Miyapur etc covers the most commercially viable routes where the traffic is more covering all the Eduacational, Banking, Government, IT and Manufacturing hubs.

Metro News :NOIDA METRO,HYDERABAD METRO

Noida Metro | NMRC Passenger Smart card to be linked with DMRC

Noida: Officials of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) met on Tuesday to work out the modalities of the plan after having granted a nod to the seamless card integration for the 29km Noida-Greater Noida corridor last week. Officials say while the technical aspects of the concept have been resolved, the plan is yet to be fine-tuned.

NMRC officials told TOI that senior officials of DMRC including executive director (S&T) Prashant Rao participated in the meeting. Under the seamless card integration plan, a passenger will be able to avail of Metro rail, city bus and other transport facilities with just a single token or smart card. “The card or token will be valid for both Delhi and Noida, Greater Noida cities,” said a senior NMRC official. Officials also studied a similar plan being used by the Kochi Metro.

“However, the Kochi Metro is a closed loop just like Delhi Metro and we want it to be an open loop so that the card or token is also used in food courts and Metro stations, etc,” the official said. The fare collection system of NMRC will be integrated with that of Delhi Metro for the convenience of the travelling public.

Hyderabad Metro | Commercial operations of Hyderabad Metro Rail’s will start on June 2

Hyderabad: Commercial operations of Hyderabad Metro Rail’s first phase will start on June 2, on the occasion of Telangana Formation Day. The state government is trying its best to get Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Metro Rail on the day.

Minister for municipal administration and urban development K.T. Rama Rao said on Thursday that all the required works, including tests and trials and certifications for the Metro, would be completed by then. The first phase includes Stage-1 from Nagole to Secunderabad railway station (about 9 km) under Corridor-III and stage-2 from Miyapur to SR Nagar (11.9 km) under Corridor-I.

A total of 20 km will be opened up for commercial operations on June 2. In fact, the Nagole-Mettuguda stretch (8 km) was complete and was meant to commence operations on Ugadi 2015 but was put on hold as there would have been revenue losses.

The state government and L&T then decided to extend the stretch up to the Secunderabad railway station. Currently, works between Mettuguda and Secunderabad are on.

The Miyapur and SR Nagar stretch, including the Bharatnagar Rail overbridge, was completed in 2015 and trial runs were held last October. During a test run in December 2015, Mr Rama Rao had announced that these stretches would be opened in early 2016.

The stretches that will be operational from June 2 have been ready for months but were delayed owing to several reasons. At present, 72 km of Metro lines are being constructed in three different corridors in the twin cities.

Mr Rama Rao, while announcing the 100-day action plan for the city said, “The state government authorities are on the job to get Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the first phase. Further details will be announced by the Chief Minister once we get the green signal from the Centre.”

Hyderabad Realty on a Sticky Wicket due to Metro Rail, ORR Delay

Hyderabad Realty on a Sticky Wicket due to Metro Rail, ORR Delay

Hyderabad: Inordinate delay of over nine months in the construction of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and Outer Ring Road (ORR) is adding to the woes of the city realty sector which is already reeling under various problems.

The negative impact of the delay was highlighted by popular property portal 99acres.com, in its quarterly report (July-August 2015) on real estate trends and analysis of seven metro cities in India. According to the report, which was released on Wednesday, property prices have remained static in the past three months and the rental value has dropped by 3 percent. The delay in completing infrastructure projects like Hyderabad Metro Rail and ORR has further affected Hyderabad realty. East Hyderabad was the worst-hit due to these delays, said Narasimha Jaya Kumar, Chief Business Officer of 99acres.com.

With the alleged problems being encountered in land acquisition in the old city delaying the metro rail project further, the observation made by Jaya Kumar gives further pain to the builders and realtors of Hyderabad.

“The future of Hyderabad realty is greatly dependent on the metro rail and ORR. For instance, if ORR gets completed then many areas falling on both sides of the expressway will see a rise in property prices and spur new launches. Many builders, who had acquired lands on the outskirts of Hyderabad, are looking for completion of the ORR to start new projects. The ORR delay is definitely worrying,” said K Gopala Krishna, treasurer of Telangana Real Estate Developers Association (TREDA).

While areas like Kothapet and Nagole benefited from the under-construction metro, areas like Bandlaguda and Hydershakote gained from being strategically situated between PV Narasimha Rao Elevated Expressway and Outer Ring Road. Barring a few areas like these, most other areas of Hyderabad are either negatively impacted or are experiencing zero growth due to delays in public infrastructure projects.

“Many buyers, who used to prefer central Hyderabad locations like Panjagutta, Somajiguda, Secunderabad and Koti among others, are moving to places like Madhapur, Gachibowli and Hitec City in western Hyderabad. New areas on the outskirts which have good connectivity and social infrastructure are also preferred. Metro rail connectivity and access to ORR will be the key points which will influence the decision of these segments,” said G Narotham Reddy, general manager of Cybercity Builders and Developers.

Hyderabad Metro to acquire more properties for Right of Way

Hyderabad Metro to acquire more properties for Right of Way

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited is at advanced stage of acquisition of about 81 properties aimed at providing right of way for the construction of the 72-km-long elevated metro rail project.

At a Special Task Force meeting conducted by the Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma, the acquisition of properties and right of way issues were addressed while seeking to expedite the project implementation.

NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail limited, in a detailed presentation on the decisions of previous Special task Force meeting, informed that most of the Right of Way issues have been sorted out.

Other than the Transstroy building in Jubilee Hills, the remaining critical properties have either been acquired or are in the final stage of being acquired. The front portions of Rak Ceramics and Meenakshi Jewellery buildings have been demolished and Padmahamsa apartment in Secunderabad is at award stage.

While 81 properties are in different stage of acquisition, they are mostly meant for road widening to facilitate better traffic movement in the Metro corridors.

Making use of continuous holidays during the recent festival period, five critical foundations between the Mosque property, Punjagutta and NIMS have also been completed.

Apart from granting more sites for the Concessionaire L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited, the TS Southern Power Distribution Company Limited was directed to expedite the required clearances for enabling the metro to execute the Metro Rail corridors.

Meanwhile, the issue of alignment change of the metro in at least three locations is also at advanced stage of finalisation.

Hyderabad metro rail will be one of the first projects to have an IP based surveillance Machanism

Hyderabad Metro Rail to have enhanced IP Security and Surveillance

Hyderabad: The upcoming Hyderabad metro rail will be one of the first projects in the country to have an Internet Protocol based surveillance mechanism whereby any camera can be accessed at any point of time, revealed Capt. Ravinder Reddy, from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), the concessionaire building the system, here on Friday.

Mr.Reddy, who was part of a panel discussion on ‘Security and Surveillance Challenges in Smart Cities’ here at an event held by the Fire Safety Association (FSAI), mentioned that the Hyderabad metro rail will be opting for IP surveillance from the inception stage, unlike other metro rail systems.

Unlike an analogue system where each camera is attached to a specific server, in IP based surveillance, the security is enhanced because multiple images can be obtained simultaneously.

Citing reasons to opt for it, he said, “An operator cannot look for more than 20 minutes. After that, he will be distracted and not alert, which may result in disasters.”

“In the US, the response time for emergencies is three minutes when you dial 911. We are still in hours here, and we have to come down to single digits,” Mr. Reddy said.

Rizwan Ali, Global Security Programme Manager, Microsoft, said that his company had decided to integrate and move away from monitoring to trigger based security in 2008.

“Today, it works very well. There had been a fire in Bangkok and we managed it by calling the police from here,” he recalled, and added that in times of need, they were able to ensure the safety of the company’s employees with the help of technology. “People residing in colonies do not even know how to use fire safety equipment. They call security to operate it. People must know what is there,” said E. Ananth, senior design architect, Genesis, who was also part of the discussion.

Commodore Pakala, managing partner, Defence Experts, also pointed out that there was need to have a regulatory authority in any smart city. “It must be a regulatory authority with impeccable integrity to check all standards,” said Commodore Pakala, and added that a responsible and knowledgeable agency is needed in a smart city.

Cost over-runs could make Hyderabad Metro unviable, while Fare Hike has its Limitations

Cost over-runs could make Hyderabad Metro unviable, while Fare Hike has its Limitations

Hyderabad: Challenges posed by an urban environment are no excuse for getting stuck during project execution — this seems to have been the guiding principle for L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMRHL), which has in three years never faced a work stoppage on the 72-km three-corridor metro rail project in spite of recurring problems on the ground as well as at the government level.

Cost overruns could make the entire project unviable while increase in fares to make up the difference has its limitations as was evident by public protest against a Rs 100 fare for a one-way ride on the Mumbai metro. “We did not stop work. That was the basic direction of our execution strategy. We opened multiple fronts and if we had come across a roadblock at one place we resumed work on other front,” LTMRHL chief executive V B Gadgil told.

The state government had set July 2017 as the dead-line for completion of the Rs 14,700 crore project in five years. The appointed date was fixed as July 5, 2012 after taking into account the initial hiccups. The concession period is for 35 years with an entitlement to extend it for further 25 years.

Now this dead-line is an impossible task for the company as it would take at least 30 months to build the three 2-level interchange stations that link the three metro corridors at Ameerpet, MG Bus Station and the Parade Grounds, in addition to other issues ” It is in our interest to complete the project early as we are the concessionaire of the project, but this is something which is not entirely in our hands” he said.

The company had spent more than Rs 7,000 crore while accomplishing about 55 per cent of the work on all the three corridors by following the ‘no stopping of work’ strategy. Delays are manageable as long as the work is progressing. The second important strategy that worked well for the project was the adoption of precasting mode to the maximum possible extent. In fact, the overhead metro stations are being completely built with precast structures.

Next year the citizens of Hyderabad are likely to start riding Metro Rails in a limited distance. The company hopes to begin commercial operations on a 10 km stretch between Miyapur and Ameerpet of the most viable corridor and as well as the least viable 7 km long Nagole-Mettuguda stretch by March-April, 2016.

These two stretches were chosen together as opposed to the original idea of operationalising the Nagole-Mettuguda stretch in 2015 itself, only for the sake of operational viability from the start, according to the metro rail company chief executive.

For instance, the rider ship on Chennai Metro was yet to achieve critical mass and a similar situation would end up in serving the tourist interest by Hyderabad Metro. Which means the company has to bear higher operational costs compared to passenger revenues.

Coinciding with this initial phase, the L&T Metro is planning to complete around 1.3 million sft of transit oriented commercial space, including malls, at Erramanjil, Hitech City and Ameerpet.

While it took 11 years for completion of the first 7 kms of Mumbai Metro and 5 years for Delhi Metro, it was no mean achievement if the Hyderabad Metro developers will be able to operationalise close to 20 kms in over 3 years against all odds, the government officials say.

The Metro Rail execution was a difficult task as two projects-construction of metro rail and road expansion in metro rail routes as it is being built in the middle of the existing road- were happening simultaneously. Shifting the utilities including sewer and water pipelines, demolition of structures coming in way of the project were some of the other big problems the company faced on an ongoing basis.

Three rail over bridges (ROBs) near Secunderabad railway station, three alignment changes proposed by the Telangana government, the right of way and other issues that still exist in at least 10 km stretch are the other major issues still to be sorted out. The work got stuck at the Assembly complex, Sultan Bazar and on the entire stretch of MG Bustation-Falaknuma due to the alignment changes proposed by the government. This would involve another 10 kms of distance.

” We had given reports to the government explaining the pros and cons including the consequences pertaining to the changes three months ago. The authorities are yet to tell us what we should do,” Gadgil said. Hyderabad Metrorail Limited, the state government’s nodal agency, recently said the government is willing consider bearing the additional costs arising out of these changes.

On the whole things have changed considerably over the past three months with the chief secretary reviewing the problems on ground every Tuesday resulting in better coordination and cooperation from the government agencies, according to Gadgil.

There is a larger contentious issue that requires to be resolved at some point between the two parties of this PPP project was the claim of the cost escalation to the extent of around Rs 3,000 crore due to delays in facilitation by the government agencies. ” It is in that range and an independent assessment of the same has to be made to arrive at an ultimate figure,” he said.

The company has asked the government to take responsibility for the cost escalation while the government was yet to respond as it has to first constitute a committee to look into these claims.

“The criticality at this point of time is to get the matters of alignment and other field level issues sorted out to quickly start work on the remaining stretches. Other issues come later ,” says L&T MRHL chief.

Except for the cost overruns, the project is perfectly viable and even the fares will be lower compared to all other metros as the concessionaire here is dealing with a much larger size of a metro unlike in other cities, according to him.

Hyderabad Metro Rail works Progressing Fast: NVS Reddy, Managing Director

Hyderabad Metro Rail works Progressing Fast: NVS Reddy, Managing Director

Hyderabad: Approximately 1,800 square meters of the Country Club of India and a Wakf Board property at Greenlands has been acquired by the Hyderabad Metro Rail to fill the gap which existed on this stretch.

Apprising the chief secretary Rajiv Sharma of the latest development, HMR MD N.V.S.Reddy clarified that all the bottlenecks and gaps will be cleared. Mr Reddy explained, “We have acquired the open land near the Country Club of India building. The land deals have been closed and will be handed over to L&T for construction works soon.”

Similarly, negotiations are also going on for the other gaps like Padma Hansa Apartments after ISKON temple at Secunderabad, front portions of residential homes and open areas outside homes on Road No. 5 Banjara Hills, 30 housing properties across Madhuranagar and Krishna Nagar in the Yusufguda stretch and furniture shops at Nampally. He assured the chief secretary that works were on in full swing.

Mr Sharma insisted that targets for completing utility shifting like sewage, water and electrical works must be carried out on time. He cautioned HMR not to delay works and also ensure that works of restoration of roads are carried out on a priority basis so that the users are not inconvenienced.

As part of rapid progress in Metro Rail realignments on the metro rail corridor-I (Miyapur-LB Nagar), it is expected that decades-old lake, a nursery and lawns on the Public Gardens premises may vanish. Also, hundreds of morning walkers may face inconvenience once the metro rail construction begins. Following the Telangana government’s directive to the Hyderabad Metro Rail to change the alignment in such a way that the Miyapur-LB Nagar corridor-I line passes from behind the Assembly instead of the front, preparations such as earmarking the right of way (RoW), pegging and soil testing on Public Gardens premises are in full swing.

The L&T-HMRL had already constructed pillars between Nampally and the Assembly en route Telugu University , but on Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s instructions, the work was stopped last year.  As per the new alignment, RoW markings have been made in the commercial nursery (compound wall adja cent to the Nampally rail line), a lake, behind the Jubilee Hall, a kitchen, a temple, a building of general administration (protocol) department and police outpost (earlier bird enclosure).

As per the marking, nearly 15 pillars would be constructed between the nursery and lake on the Public Garden premises. Though there is no official communication from the HMRL to the horticulture department on the exact extent of Public Garden land it needs for the metro rail project, officials claim it could be around five acres.

“Without prior intimation, HMRL authorities started marking RoW for the metro rail on our premises. When the HMRL sent a letter to us seeking permission to allot Public Gardens land for metro rail four months ago, we made it clear that no permanent construction activity could be taken up in the water body or abutting it as per the Supreme Court directives. But they are going ahead without giving a reply,” assistant director, government gardens, department of horticulture, John Jawaharlal told.

The Public Garden is spread over 40 acres. On nearly 10-acre land, various structures, including offices of the horticulture department, Jubilee Hall, AP & Telangana Legislative Councils, GAD-Protocol (AP) property and museum are located. ” A nursery , spread over nearly three acres, may vanish due to the metro rail pillars,” he said.

A few structures, including a kitchen located behind the Jubilee Hall, a temple, a portion of the GAD protocol building, the police outpost and a portion of lake would get affected due to the nearly 1.5-km ROW . Besides, nearly 10 century-old trees and green lawns will be wiped out. “We fear threat to the heritage building, Jubilee Hall, during earth excavation works,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Public Garden Walkers’ Association approached the Lokayukta in June and lodged a complaint against the HMRL for realigning the metro rail.

Hospitality & Real Estate Majors see more Greenfield Growth around Metro Rail Corridors in Hyderabad

Hospitality & Real Estate Majors see more Greenfield Growth around Metro Rail Corridors in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Hospitality and Real Estate majors are renewing their interest in Hyderabad by expanding their keys or setting up greenfield projects in the city after a gap of many years due to political uncertainty over the bifurcation of the State into Telangana from the Andhra Pradesh.  The top multinationals and Indian majors in the Hospitality and Real Estate industry observed that more and more Greenfield Growth is expected to be emerging in and around the three Metro Rail Corridors in Hyderabad. This has fueled with the rapid growth of investments by various Global giants.

The increased interest is primarily attributed to the relatively cheaper real estate costs, well planned Metro Rail corridors, well heeled urban infrastructure, growing floating population with surplus income, proposed Information Technology Investment Region and global giants such as IKEA and Amazon evincing interest to set up large facilities, among others. Importantly the proactive and forward-looking attitude of Chief Minister Kalwakuntla Chandra Sekhar Rao is seen as the prime prerogative for various industry majors to look at Hyderabad as global investment hub.

Hyderabad currently has over two dozen star hotels with leading brands including Taj Hotels, ITC, Marriott, Novotel, Park Hyatt, The Park, Westin, Radisson Blu, Trident, Avasa, Royal Orchid and Green Park, with a total of around 10,000 rooms in 3, 4 and 5-star segments.

ITC, Oberoi, StayWell and Hyatt are among half a dozen hotel brands that are keen to set up new properties with a cumulative capacity of around 1,200 rooms over the next 18-24 months involving around Rs 3,000 crore of investment.

Sandip Patnaik, managing director of the global real estate services firm Jones Lang Lasalle’s (JLL) Hyderabad chapter, attributes “the sudden interest by hospitality players primarily to the political stability, assured power supply, lower entry costs, apart from quicker ap provals by the Telangana government”. Further, he said, increased interest by retail players such as Amazon, Walmart, Metro and IKEA and several information technology and financial services firms to cash in on the urban infrastructure and skilled manpower would drive occupancy ratios of hospitality players.

Real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield’s Director PR Srinivas said Hyderabad is among the seven top cities that would drive the sector’s growth. The other cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune and Ahmedabad. “While the sector could see at least 5% growth this fiscal on a national level, some regional markets like Hyderabad could see much better growths, owing to several advantages.”

Hyderabad is among the few Indian cities that has witnessed improved occupancy levels, according to STR Global Reports, where the city saw occupancy ratios growing healthily to 57% in 2014-15 from 50 per cent a year ago. However, owing to surplus availability of hotel rooms, the market saw its average room rates remaining flat at Rs 4,762, up from Rs 4,677 a year ago.

Hyderabad is the only city in India that has robust infrastructure like Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) to host large global conclaves.

Hyderabad Metro to re-align Metro route at Assembly, Sultan Bazar

Hyderabad Metro to re-align Metro route at Assembly, Sultan Bazar

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd has agreed to realign the route at the Assembly and the revised proposal has been approved by the Telangana Government.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, HMR Chief Engineer Mohd Ziauddin said that the metro rail route would now pass from Lalitha Kalathoranam, backside of Jubilee Hall and DGP office. He said that the HMR would have relocate/demolish 23 pillars which have already been constructed.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had objected to passing of Metro Rail from Gun Park opposite Assembly building. The HMR has also changed the route at Sultan Bazar, as asked by the Chief Minister.

The Narayanguda – MG Bus Station corridor will now pass through Koti Women’s College and Osmania Medical College. Ziauddin said that the final route would be finalised soon as the new alignment would affect one heritage building in Women’s College. Works are also on to finalise the Metro Rail route in the Old City. The Falaknuma corridor will pass through Musi River, Salarjung Museum, Puranapul, Bahadurpura, Eidgah Mir Alam, Tadban, Shamsheerganj to Falaknuma. This will be 3.5 kilometre longer than the originally proposed route.

Ziauddin informed that the about 1,000 MM Water Line and 600 MM Sewerage Line was getting affected on the route from Narayanaguda – Musheerabad.

He informed that HMR will have large spans at major junctions like Khairtabad, Punjagutta and MJ Market by constructing cast-in-situ (on-site) construction of viaduct. He said that maximum care has been taken in finalisation of pier (pillar) locations at all the important junctions by considering free movement of road traffic. Normally the pillars of Metro are kept at 100 ft spacing whereas at important junctions the pillars are kept at about 200 ft spacing so as to have clear vision to all the vehicle drivers in every direction.

Ziauddin informed that so far about 1800 (65%) piers and foundations have been completed and viaduct has been completed for about 38 km length (out of a total 72 km). “The works are progressing at a brisk pace in all the corridors and L&T has deployed about 16 launching girders for erection fo viaduct segments by lifting it from the top,” he said. All the seven Metro Rail stations in Stage-1 namely Nagole, Uppal, SOI, NGRI, Habsiguda, Tarnaka and Mettuguda are completed.

He also informed that there are plans to extend HMR by 88 KM and the plans have been to the State Government for approval. Metro should be useful for visitors too: Rao on Hyderabad Metro

Metro should be useful for visitors too: Rao on Hyderabad Metro

Hyderabad: The metro rail in Hyderabad should be useful not just for the residents but also those visiting the city and the rail and air passengers, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said here today.

Rao, who reviewed the ongoing metro rail work, said the metro rail should be available to people travelling by major railway and bus stations, a release from his office said.

Rao felt that those who designed the metro rail project earlier ignored the international airport. The metro rail should connect the airport with Falaknuma and Rayadurgam localities, he said.

He noted that the metro work, which began in March 2012, is going on as expected and is scheduled to be completed by April 2017.

He had agreed to provide electricity to metro rail project at subsidised rates, the release said.

The state government has allocated Rs 2,000 crore for the project.

Rao directed the metro rail project officials to take the help of state police and prepare the security strategy in consultation with the police officials. He suggested implementing the security system adopted by Delhi metro rail authorities, the release added.

Bandaru insists more Employment Opportunities given for locals in Hyderabad Metro

Hyderabad: Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday said he wished for more employment opportunities for the local youth in the Hyderabad Metro project.

He also asked the Telangana government to speed up the completion of metro works by clearing hurdles for the land acquisition.

The Minister for Labour and Employment (independent charge) also inspected Nagole Metro station and Metro Depot and expressed happiness over the progress of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) works.

“I wish the Metro project would be launched as early as possible and the local youth get more employment opportunities here,” he said.

L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), the concessionaire, is developing the 72-km elevated metro rail project here with three corridors and 66 stations. The project cost was originally estimated at Rs 14,132 crore.

Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) is a first project built under the public-private partnership model in the country and world-class technology is also being used here by the L&T Company, the Minister said.

“The metro mode is essential to reduce air pollution and is affordable for the urban people. The eco-friendly transport mode will be a boost for the ambitious Swachh Bharat mission,” he said.

To get the ‘Universal City’ tag, Hyderabad needs such types of projects, Bandaru said.

Malkajgiri MP Malla Reddy, Uppal MLA Sri NVSS Prabhakar and HMR MD N V S Reddy and other metro officials were among those who took part in the inspection.

Hyderabad Metro Rail buys eight SCR properties for Rs.40 crore

Hyderabad Metro Rail buys eight SCR properties for Rs.40 crore

Hyderabad: Properties belonging to the South Central Railways (SCR), which are of strategic importance to the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, have been acquired recently. The eight properties of various land sizes were handed over to the Metro project at a cost of Rs. 40 crore, said Hyderabad Metro Rail MD, N.V.S. Reddy.

Talking about the legal status of the acquired land in Miyapur, he said: We faced difficulties in taking possession of 104 acres land but we had overcome it. Close to 200 court cases were filed on the land and we won almost all of them, except around 20 more cases. We hope to win the rest of the cases too.

Mr. Reddy was giving the Dr.A.Ramakrishna 2 Endowment Lecture on ‘Hyderabad Metro Rail as an Engineering Innovation and Urban Redesign Opportunity’ organised by The Institution of Engineers on Monday.

Giving an update on the project, he said that about 45 km of viaduct is complete but Metro rail services would not start immediately because only eight km of the metro line is ready and this will not serve the purpose of the immediate transportation needs of the public.

Talking about the green initiatives, Mr. Reddy said that 5,000 trees have been cut for the Metro project and according to the forest department rules we have to plant five sapling for every tree felled. Instead of 25,000 saplings, we planted three lakh saplings till date. About 2,000 trees were transplanted and all are doing well. We will also beatifying the medians like the one in Madhapur, he said.

Hyderabad Metro is the first Indian metro project to implement Communication Based Train Control system and it is also being used in Delhi and Cochin projects. Earlier, Mr.Reddy remembered late builder and engineer, A. Ramakrishna, for his contribution to several development related projects in the country.  Meanwhile, Mr.Reddy said that Police permission for Metro Rail works in crowded Hyderabad areas has been granted and the works would go unhindered.

Hyderabad Metro propose to shift Metro alignment near Assembly building to the backyard

Hyderabad Metro propose to shift Metro alignment near Assembly building to the backyard

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail has proposed to divert the Metro alignment to behind the Assembly building. In doing so, the old dilapidated police quarters and police land will be utilised.

A senior official said, “The diversion will be from the Telangana Tourism Development Corporation office to the police land and then near the railway track and will come out at Public Gardens. In doing so, the diversion will be minimal. But for this to be implemented, the Hyderabad Metro Rail and state government will have to sit together and fine tune the proposal.”

Officials also said that the Sultan Bazaar stretch and Mozamjahi Market would not be touched. The route will be changed from Badi Chowki to Tilak Park to the northeastern side of Women’s College in Koti where it will be connected to Chaderghat.

Hyderabad Metro Rail’s track tests surprise citizens

Hyderabad Metro Rail’s track tests surprise citizens

Hyderabad: L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has begun test runs on a small stretch from its Uppal depot to Secunderabad section.  Hyderabad Metro Rail carried out its first alignment, track, signalling and communication tests on the bridge outside the Nagole depot, all the way up to the Survey of India station on Thursday.

Incidentally, people were not aware that the authorities had planned the tests on Thursday. When residents of neighbouring buildings realised that the Metro officials were conducting the track tests, they ran for their terraces and balconies to have a look.

The three coaches, branded with advertisements, however, operated on a half-a-km stretch. A senior engineer said, “We need to test all the components in the train, including air-conditioning, signalling, track and alignment issues. These need to be checked and also verified whether they are synchronising with each other. These are routine tests and many more such tests will be conducted.”

The concessionaire L&T expects to commission first stretch of 8 km of the 72-km elevated metro project by March 2015. Once the trial runs are completed, it will take up detailed tests of the rail network.

The Rs. 16,000-crore project seeks to decongest three dense corridors in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The work on various stretches is now underway, including construction of depots and metro stations in the phase one of the project.

The metro bridge from Nagole depot to Uppal now has electric current and hence is a high-security zone. The tests require extreme caution as any variation needs to be reported and verified.
