Suresh Prabhu’s proactive approach keeps Railway Officials on their Toes

New Delhi: Good days are over for the lazy officials of the ministry of railways. Senior railway officials are “upset” with the pro-active approach of railway minister Suresh Prabhu. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has not only been personally forwarding passengers’ complaints to officials but also making sure that actions are taken on them. In case, follow-up is not satisfactory, Prabhu personally hauls up concerned officials.

“Yes, it has become a bit difficult for us in the past few months. The railways is a service provider that operates at such a huge scale all over India and in this context, it is natural that there will be some deficiencies. The minister has been forwarding us complaints received from passengers fairly regularly, and we do try our best to address them. He has also issued warnings that officials ignoring the complaints will be transferred and demoted,” quoting a senior railway official, who requested anonymity.

Moreover, Suresh Prabhu personally monitors his emails and Twitter accounts and ensures that officials take serious note of online complaints. As a result, the railway minister’s Twitter handle is flooded with complaints that have received prompt replies.

Now, Mobile App to get your railway coach cleaned

Now, Mobile App to get your railway coach cleaned

New Delhi: Soon you would be able to get your railway coach cleaned in a matter of miniutes by lodging a complaint online. In line with Modi government’s ‘Swachh Bharat’ mission, the railways is to launch ‘Clean My Coach’ mobile app for all long-distance trains.

Once operational, a passenger can file an online complaint which will be attended within 15 minutes. After successful testing of the scheme in Central Railways, the transporter plans to extend it to long routes across the country. It will ensure speedy cleaning of coaches or toilets in long-distance trains which have housekeeping facilities on-board.

“Central Railway has developed a good mobile app ‘Clean My Coach’. All zonal railways should adopt and adapt it,” said a senior railway official.

Most of the long distance trains have housekeeping staff on board, but passengers are often not able to trace them in a moving train.

An official said rail travelers can file complaints either on the website or the app which can be downloaded on mobile phones.

According to the system developed by Central Railways, passengers have to just feed in their PNR number on the mobile app to register complaints related to their coach. Soon after a passenger lodges complaint, an SMS with details of the coach and berth number will be forwarded to an attendant on the train instantly. Once the complaint is attended to, the attendant will have to seek an acknowledgement from the complainant.

After the BJP government took charge, railways under Suresh Prabhu has set up a new house-keeping department in the Railway Board which is responsible not only for cleaning of trains but also ‘A’, ‘B’ & ‘C’ class stations.

Railways clarifies on Unprecedented Increase of Traffic on IRCTC Website

Railways clarifies on Unprecedented Increase of Traffic on IRCTC Website

New Delhi: Ministry of Railways gives clarification regarding Unprecedented Increase of Traffic on IRCTC Website (E-Ticketing Website of Indian Railways). The Morning Hits on IRCTC Website go up from 10 million to a Peak of 30 Million. Additional Computer Server being put in place to augment the Booking Capacity of the IRCTC Site to cope up with the increased traffic. IRCTC Website has capacity for a defined level of transactions. However, since 21st May 2015 an unprecedented level of train cancellations have been forced on the railway system by agitation on Kota-Mathura route which is still continuing. This section which bears the major traffic between South and North and North to West has been cut off due to agitation.

Complaints have been received regarding intermittent malfunctioning of IRCTC Website particularly during morning time in last one week. The complaints relates to the following:-
(1) Inability to access the site
(2) Failure to complete the transaction
(3) Long queuing/waiting time
(4) Improper ticket transaction
(5) Forced logout

Till 1300 hrs of 27th May 2015, 208 mail/express trains have been cancelled, 9 partially cancelled and 109 trains have been diverted on alternative routes. This cancellation/diversion has lead to an unprecedented level of cancellations of reservations, revised reservation requests, enquiries etc.

It may be noted that since the agitation started, more than 1.9 lakh cancellations are being done daily against 1.1 lakh cancellations being done normally by IRCTC Website, an increase of 70%. It may be noted that cancellation of one journey normally leads to a revised application for reservation for anticipated future date. This has lead to a sudden upsurge of hits on the IRCTC Website. Further, it may also be noted that once a passenger cancels a ticket, he tries to go in for Tatkal and as a result the search has been particularly surged from 10.30 in the morning which is normally Tatkal period. The number of hits between 10 AM to 11 AM which were normally in the range of 10 million have gone up 22.3 million since start of agitation, touching a peak of 30 million on 22nd May 2015.

IRCTC Website is not geared for such abnormal increase of traffic and hence the reported problems. However, steps have taken to mitigate the problem in this moment of crisis and additional server is being put in place to augment the booking capacity of the site and to cope with the increased traffic.
