INNOVATIVE PRE-FABRICATED RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION FOR RAILWAY STAFF AT JAKHAPURA
An innovative type of residential accommodation for Railway staff at Jakhpura Railway Station under Khurda Road Division of East Coast Railway has emerged as an engineering marvel. This beautiful 3-storeyed building with minimal expenditure of Rs. 2.27 crores has been constructed within four months of time with the use of Pre-fabricated released materials with steel structure and expanded poly styrene wall panelling. In normal course of time, to construct this building atleast one and half years of time would have been taken. This building has structure without conventional system of construction and it is fire proof. Architectural elevation has been given by plastering this G+2 storied building. While inspecting the Jakhpura Railway Station, Shri Umesh Singh, General Manager of East Coast Railway has appreciated efforts of the engineers of Khurda Road Division in constructing this building within a record time of 4 months only. The building has 33 nos. of isolated footings as foundation with highest quality column/beam and slab work. The rooms have been tiled and flush doors provided. This Environment-friendly project has ensured that not a single tree has been cut and there is provision of Rain water harvesting.
After construction of this building the Railway staff working nearby Jakhapura area will be benefited. Railway staff are booked every day to operate from the Jakhapura station. At present all the staff are residing at Jajpur Keonjhar Road, which is 15 kms away from Jakhapura. It will save time in getting off & going down to the place of work and will also help to save the reduced efficiency of staff and delay of trains. More such quarters will be built in the near future.

IIT-Mumbai Professor show Railways how to set a Timetable in Five Minutes
The professors predict the software would be adopted by suburban rail networks across the country. The project has been chosen to be presented at a global seminar by the International Association of Railway Operations Research (IAROR) in France to be held in the first week of April.
MUMBAI: The utterly complex local timetable which can take railway officials over a fortnight to chalk out won’t rob them of sleep as often, thanks to the brainpower from IIT-Bombay.
A team of professors from the Indian Institute of Technology here collaborated with the Central Railway to write algorithms that have simplified the process of creating railway timetables to a degree that the suburban railway schedules can be created in as little as five minutes.
With the software it has developed, the team created a periodic timetable that unifies the many processes rail staff would need to employ. The new system is not only a notch above the existing scheduling process, but it also sidesteps various bumps the railways faces, such as fluctuating number of rakes, availability of platforms at certain terminals, and various glitches and deficiencies the railways battle every day.
The professors predict that the software would in time be adopted by suburban rail networks across the country with small tweaks to suit each city’s requirements.
On Thursday, a team comprising Professors Narayan Rangaraj and Madhu Belur, M Tech scholar Soumya Dutta and Central Railway’s deputy chief operations manager (goods) KN Singh gave a presentation on the software to the railway’s operations department.
The authorities that sat in on the meet included chief operations manager RD Sharma and senior divisional operations manager Anil Patke.
Central Railway’s chief public relations officer Narendra Patil told Mumbai Mirror that they had been working on this project with the IIT professors for the last two years. “This will not only help us in more efficient and easier planning but also give us a lot of options for adopting time tables for suburban operations according to our needs,” added Patil.
Professor Rangaraj, from IIT-B’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, said he and his colleagues wanted to help the railway administration with planning things by employing updated planning tools. “With the help of this software, you can also easily find out how many trains you can ply on the given routes,” he said.
The project has been chosen to be presented at a global seminar by the International Association of Railway Operations Research (IAROR) in France to be held in the first week of April. The organisation encourages academic and professional railway research and contributes to the development of new standards for railway traffic management by integrating various scientific disciplines .

SWISS Federal Railways (SBB) has launched a new strategy which aims to combine its existing strengths with new technology to enable it to increase capacity, offer door-to-door journeys, and develop digital stations and smart freight wagons.
SBB launches 2020 strategy to harness new technology
SBB says it has developed its 2020 strategy in consultation with customers, employees, partners and policymakers in order to adapt the railway to a rapidly changing world characterised by new customer requirements, digitalisation, new transport providers and regulatory developments. SBB says it needs to adapt as other modes of transport are catching up in terms of price and environmental advantage, and there is an increasing demand for personalised, intermodal, networked and simple mobility and logistics solutions.
SBB is already trying to reduce the rise in overall costs so that its services remain affordable under its current “RailFit20/30” programme, but it also wants to boost earnings and capacity utilisation.
SBB says it is introducing a new group-wide innovation management system to promote an innovative spirit, and is establishing a SFr 12m ($US 12m) innovation fund. “The aim is to use innovations to create actual services as quickly as possible,” SBB says, but with the proviso that if they are unsuccessful it will remove them from the market.
SBB believes that digitalisation will enable it to increase capacity on a network, which it claims is already the most heavily used in the world, by up to 30%. To achieve this, SBB is furthering the automation of timetable creation, rail operations and train control and is also looking into the possibility of remote-controlled trains. SBB is designing a new digital signalbox which will reduce the quantity and variety of signalling installations, thereby cutting costs substantially.
“The railway technology of the future means that the railway system can be used in a more efficient way,” SBB says. “From 2025, there will be more trains in use, shorter timetable intervals, fewer disruptions, improved radio connections and more precise customer information in the event of a disruption.” SBB says it has launched initiatives to achieve these objectives.
Track maintenance is being digitalised using a new system called SwissTamp for status analysis and maintenance planning, which should reduce the number of disruptions and improve reliability and punctuality.
The new version of the ticketing app SBB Mobile has attracted more than 150,000 new users, and is now used regularly by 3 million customers. In the first quarter of 2017 SBB will launch a voice control function with a speaking timetable and a speaking robot to provide other information.
The new SBB Trip Planner app will enable customers to compare, combine and book a journey using multiple modes of transport. Passengers will also be able to use the app to book taxi and Uber services.
SBB is developing what it describes as a simple, environmentally-friendly door-to-door service called SBB Green Class and is teaming up with ETH Zurich to research the mobility behaviour of the general public. The findings will provide SBB with information about customers’ requirements for door-to-door mobility, so that it can launch new services.
SBB is transforming its stations into networked, multimodal hubs encompassing digital departure and arrival boards, screens with real-time train information, advertising e-panels, touchscreen ticket machines and free Wi-Fi. SBB is working with organisations such as Google and ETH Zurich to improve station services. Passengers will be able to access a virtual view of the station in Google Street View, and such things as escalators, lifts and lights will be controlled digitally via the Internet of Things.
For freight, SBB plans to install sensors in its wagons to measure temperature, vibrations, and the wagon’s location. The latter will enable customers to track their freight in real time. In 2018, SBB Cargo plans to introduce automatic wagon coupling.

Railways today dismissed reports about the leak of email and mobile numbers from user profile data of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s (IRCTC) e-ticketing system and said everything is safe and secure.
There is no hacking nor any leakage of IRCTC ticketing website and everything is safe, Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohd Jamshed told PTI.
He was replying to a query about reports citing cyber officials in Maharashtra regarding alleged leak of email and mobile numbers from user profile data of IRCTC e-ticketing system.
He said the security system has already been reviewed twice in the recent past.
Railways constituted a committee comprising cyber experts and vigilance officials from IRCTC and Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) on May 3 to check the possible theft of data and found no such case.
“The committee has submitted the preliminary reports and there is no leakage. We are constantly monitoring it,” Jamshed said.
The e-ticketing system is managed in-house by CRIS, the IT arm of Indian Railways. The data centre is in the premises of CRIS. According to Railways, the report of possible theft of data came to light on May 2 and a thorough investigation was carried out to ascertain its veracity. However, no such incident was detected by technical teams of CRIS and IRCTC.
The data of e-ticketing system can be broadly divided into two categories — sensitive information like debit/credit card details, login ID, passwords, which could cause potential financial risk. PAN card detail is not required for booking e-ticket. No sensitive data is alleged to have been leaked.
It is clarified that other data like mobile numbers and email ids is available with a large number of electronic service providing entities such as e-commerce firms and telemarketers.
Email and mobile numbers have to be shared with service providers for providing catering services, cab services, hotel bookings, SMS services etc. Till now, leak of data through none of the service providers of IRCTC has been established.
E-ticketing website has been working normally thereby eliminating any chances of unauthorized interference, IRCTC said.

Railway Minister announces 14.5% Revenue Growth for Railways in Q1

New Delhi: Indian Railways achieved an earnings growth of 14.54 per cent in the first quarter of the current financial year even as working expenses grew 4.22 per cent, lower than the budgeted estimate of 7.68 per cent, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu said. While Prabhu did not share specific details of the earnings and the expenses during the quarter, the announcement marks the first time the Railways has announced its quarterly growth figures, a key step to bolstering the national transporter’s financial profile amid the huge requirement for fund raising from the market.
“In the current financial year, a plan outlay of Rs 1 lakh crore has been made. The implementation of Budget announcements is making steady progress and 79 announcements have already been implemented. I’ve decided to regularly present the performance of Railways in every quarter,” Prabhu said in a letter to the media. He, however, did not mention the low volume growth, particularly in the passenger segment, registered of late.
The ministry spent Rs 1,045 crore on doubling projects in the first quarter compared to the targeted Rs 835 crore; Rs 1,557 crore on new lines compared to the targeted Rs 1,189 crore; Rs 690 crore on gauge conversion compared to the target of Rs 637 crore; and Rs 372 crore on electrification of network compared to the targeted Rs 321 crore.
“The ministry achieved a total capital expenditure of Rs 17,734 crore during the quarter, 134 per cent more than the projected Rs 13,231 crore,” he said. Railways commissioned 108 km of new lines between Agra and Etawah in the three months from April to June 2015. Also, the 122-km-long gauge conversion project was commissioned from Lehar to Iskar in Rajasthan. In addition, 150 km doubling works were commissioned by Railways to de-congest network, a major focus area of this year’s Budget, during the quarter.
Prabhu said the ministry fast-tracked 7,000-km-long doubling projects and 4,000-km gauge conversion projects by providing adequate funds.
To further increase the pace of project implementation, the rail ministry said it had expedited the appraisal process involving NITI Aayog and the finance ministry, apart from floating tenders in advance. Indian Railways had in the last financial year achieved an operating ratio of 91.3

The recommendation is one among several proposed to the ministry to add to the report on decongesting Delhi, submitted by a 19-member inter-ministerial committee to the Prime Minister last year.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed formation of a standing committee to resolve issues of transfer of land for projects. The department, in an official communication to the Ministry of Urban Development, has cited issues relating to the inability in getting permissions for conducting feasibility studies from the Ministry of Defence and the Railways, who are “not forthcoming” in issuing no-objection certificates.
The recommendation is one among several proposed to the ministry to add to the report on decongesting Delhi, submitted by a 19-member inter-ministerial committee to the Prime Minister last year.
In its communication, the PWD has stated that “several of the projects proposed in the report on decongestion of Delhi will require transfer of land or permissions to PWD for construction on land owned by Railways, Defence, L&DO, Government of Uttar Pradesh and the municipal corporations. Some of the proposals have already been taken up with the Indian Railways and the Ministry of Defence authorities, but even preliminary permissions such as NOC for feasibility studies and surveys on land owned by such agencies is not forthcoming”.
“These agencies own large tracts of unused land such as along the rail tracks, which have also divided the city in segments. Rail tracks are big barriers for shorter routes between arterial roads. There are not enough underpasses/overpasses on the rail tracks in the city to create new road networks, as railways takes a long time to give permissions. Similarly the ring railway and land along it is underutilised. The PWD has already proposed construction of elevated road corridors along such land, providing space for future expansion on the railway tracks,” the letter states.
Some of the proposals that the PWD has taken up with the Ministry of Defence include an elevated corridor from Brar Square on the Ring Road to Toda Pur Road, a flyover at the Cariappa Marg (Jail Road) to Dhaula Kuan and a tunnel road from Janakpuri district center to Rao Tula Ram Marg.
