SANITISATION OF STATIONS & OFFICES OF S E RAILWAY
Kolkata, March 26, 2020:

During the lockdown to prevent spread of COVID-19, South Eastern Railway has started the process to sanitise all railway stations over its jurisdiction o­ne by o­ne o­n war footing basis. All offices of SER are also being sanitised including offices which are open for uninterrupted freight movement to transport and supply essential commodities to different parts of the country. Bare minimum staff are kept o­n duty in control offices, stations and sheds who are specifically needed to make sure that the movement of freight trains carrying essential commodities does not suffer.  Yesterday SER has loaded 93 freight trains which include coal for power generation sectors. Adequate health safety measures have been adopted for the staff called for duties to run freight trains of essential commodities. Staff who are specifically required to run freight trains are counselled to take proper safety precautions.
SER's hospitals are being developed further to combat with any adverse situation, if arises, due to COVID-19. Hand Sanitisers and Mask are made in house by SER at its different establishments to meet the demand of same for the safety of staff attendiing railway establishments during this crucial period.

Digha Railway Station Certified As Distinction of coveted ISO 14001:2015 For Clean and Green Environment
Kolkata, 16th July, 2019:

Digha Railway Station of South Eastern Railway has been certified as distinction of coveted ISO 14001:2015 for the scope of providing passenger amenities in clean and green environment including sanitation throughout the railway station premises o­n 10/07/2019.
The Railway Board has identified 37 major stations across the country to be developed as 'Eco smart' stations and Digha Railway Station is o­ne of them.
The efforts to attain ISO certification were made possible by close coordination of different departments ensuring an Environment Management System was set in place with tasks to make the station premises complaint with international norms completed in swift manner.
Various initiatives included setting up a waste management cell, declaring the premises a 'no plastic' zone, a new mechanised cleaning contract for the premises with waste segregation and disposal with help of municipal authorities, water and energy audits, public meetings for suggestions and awareness, emergency preparedness and mockdrills and a grievance redressal system through the newly launched website of the station.
Further improvements in the pipeline include plantation of trees in an area of 15,000 sq feet with help of forest department next to station area, setting up of new bio-toilets and conversion of existing toilets into eco-friendly o­nes, a Combined Treatment Plant(CTP) for treatment of water among others. These are expected to be completed by the last week of July.

Following are the facilities announced by the Government for passenger of sleeper and general second class coaches wherein implementation has already started: 

1.Provision of cushioned seats in General Second class coaches. 

2.Magazine bags, bottle holder and snack table in non-air conditioned Sleeper Class coaches. 

3.Provision of dustbins in all Sleeper and General class coaches. 

4.Provision of Braille signages. 

5.On-Board House Keeping services wherein internal cleaning of sleeper class coaches on identified trains is carried out on run. 

6.Cleaning of coaches under Clean Train Station scheme at nominated stations including Non-AC sleeper class coaches. 

7.Mobile charging points in all new coaches. 

This Press Release is based on information given by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Communications and Minister of State for Railways in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on 22.07.2016 (Friday).

BIO TOILETS IN 468 WR COACHES TO STOP DISCHARGE OF HUMAN WASTE on THE TRACKS THROWING PAPER, PLASTIC, CLOTH, GUTKA POUCHES RENDER THEM USELESS

In order to achieve zero discharge of human waste o­n the tracks, Indian Railway plans to fit Bio Toilets in all trains. Western Railway has already provided Bio Toilets in 468 coaches along with Dustbins and will be provided in future in more coaches in a phased manner.

The human waste in Bio Toilets is biologically degraded by anaerobic bacteria and converted to water, methane and carbon-di-oxide. Therefore unlike traditional toilets which discharge waste o­n the railway tracks, the new bio toilets treat the human waste in a tank below the coaches where it is converted into water and harmless gases. The leftover in the tank is free from harmful germs.

Bio toilets are not o­nly environment friendly but also prevent damage to the railway tracks due to corrosion as well as improve aesthetics at railway stations. However, bio toilets often get choked and become non-functional due to throwing of objects like plastic bottles, paper cups, cloth rags, polythene/plastic bags, gutka pouches, nappies etc.

Passengers have an important role to play in the success of bio toilets. It is important that bio toilets are not used as garbage bins and waste such as plastic, bottles, polythene, pouches, cloth pieces, nappies etc. are not be thrown in the toilet. Also, the toilets are not to be used when the train is on the station.

Indian Railways is working towards the long terms objective of replacing the traditional train toilets with green toilets i.e. bio toilets.

Swachh Bharat: 29 Central, 11 Western Railway stations adopted to ensure cleanliness 

MUMBAI: With an aim to keep the stations neat and clean, 29 and 11 stations of Central and Western Railway respectively have been adopted by different social, non-governmental organisations and charitable institutes.

The move by the organisations is aimed at meeting the target of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. 

The adoption of station by charitable institutions, social organisations and NGOs is a new concept initiated under 'Swachh Rail - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' of Indian Railways initiated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, the Railways said in a statement. 

"To get the 'Swachh rail' actualised, prominent charitable Institutions, social organisations and NGOs were contacted by Central and Western Railways regarding adoption of stations and support in taking forward the campaign with active participation of its volunteers/social workers. 

"Matunga station has been adopted by Welinkgar Institute, Vadala Road station by Vidyalankar Institute and Dadar station by Nerolac Paints. Apart from this, cleaning drive has already been started at GTB Nagar, Nahur, Chembur, Kanjurmarg, Vidyavihar, Kings Circle, Bhandup and Ghatkopar stations with the initiative by various institutes and organisations," it said. 

Rotary International has come forward by accepting the challenge to fulfil the social cause by adopting various stations of Central and Western Railway (WR).

Yesterday, Rotary International District 3140 adopted eight stations - Thane, Dombivali, Govandi and Mankhurd of Central Railway (CR) and Borivali, Kandivali, Bandra and Khar Road of Western Railway.
"Rotary is involved in series of humanitarian efforts and it is in sync with various initiatives proposed by PM Narendra Modi," a volunteer with the organisation said. 

"Through these proactive efforts of the Central and Western Railway authorities and the Rotary, we expect a face-lift of the stations, cleaner and healthier toilet blocks, awareness to the travelling public on various health and safety issues and a high sense of belonging to the commuters towards the public property," a senior officer of the Central Railways said.

Indian Railways set up 13 Additional Mechanised Laundries 

During the year 2013 and 2014 till date, 13 additional mechanized laundries have been set up. Mechanised cleaning, rag picking and disposal contracts are being awarded or ensuring cleaning of stations including platforms. More and more toilets are being brought under ‘pay & use’ scheme. 

To improve upon the effectiveness of housekeeping schemes for trains like, On Board Housing Services (OBHS), Clean Train Stations (CTS) and Mechanised Coach Cleaning in coaching depots, Zonal Railways have been advised for close monitoring of cleaning operations, use of biometric attendance system for OBHS staff and evolve an evaluation system for CTS functioning. 

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
