Swachh Bharat: 29 Central, 11 Western Railway stations adopted to ensure cleanliness 

MUMBAI: With an aim to keep the stations neat and clean, 29 and 11 stations of Central and Western Railway respectively have been adopted by different social, non-governmental organisations and charitable institutes.

The move by the organisations is aimed at meeting the target of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. 

The adoption of station by charitable institutions, social organisations and NGOs is a new concept initiated under 'Swachh Rail - Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' of Indian Railways initiated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, the Railways said in a statement. 

"To get the 'Swachh rail' actualised, prominent charitable Institutions, social organisations and NGOs were contacted by Central and Western Railways regarding adoption of stations and support in taking forward the campaign with active participation of its volunteers/social workers. 

"Matunga station has been adopted by Welinkgar Institute, Vadala Road station by Vidyalankar Institute and Dadar station by Nerolac Paints. Apart from this, cleaning drive has already been started at GTB Nagar, Nahur, Chembur, Kanjurmarg, Vidyavihar, Kings Circle, Bhandup and Ghatkopar stations with the initiative by various institutes and organisations," it said. 

Rotary International has come forward by accepting the challenge to fulfil the social cause by adopting various stations of Central and Western Railway (WR).

Yesterday, Rotary International District 3140 adopted eight stations - Thane, Dombivali, Govandi and Mankhurd of Central Railway (CR) and Borivali, Kandivali, Bandra and Khar Road of Western Railway.
"Rotary is involved in series of humanitarian efforts and it is in sync with various initiatives proposed by PM Narendra Modi," a volunteer with the organisation said. 

"Through these proactive efforts of the Central and Western Railway authorities and the Rotary, we expect a face-lift of the stations, cleaner and healthier toilet blocks, awareness to the travelling public on various health and safety issues and a high sense of belonging to the commuters towards the public property," a senior officer of the Central Railways said.

CR installs RFID tags to ensure regular cleaning on trains

Mumbai: The chances of your trains being cleaner than what it is at present has just got brighter. Making use of technology to ensure the people deployed to clean your train have done the needful, the Mumbai division of Central Railway has become the first railway zone in the country to employ Radio Frequency Identification  (RFID) tags for the purpose to ensure that housekeeping staff of running trains visits and cleans each compartment regularly, Central Railway has introduced radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.

RFID tags, installed in each compartment, record time of visits by the cleaning staff. The technology has been introduced on three trains as of now. “After carrying out every scheduled morning/evening cleaning, the housekeeper will have to sense-read the fixed RFID tag of the compartment using a handheld device which will record the sensing time of tag,” said a CR release.

“On completion of trip of train, the data…Will confirm if each compartment was attended twice a day.” The tags are fixed near mirrors on the compartment wall.

While the old system was a manual one where the housekeeper- in-charge of cleaning the train- would sign a register to emphasis that the scheduled evening and morning routine had been completed, the new RFID system calls for the housekeeper to ‘sense-‘read’  the RFID tag with the help of a portable electronic hand-held device which will record the sensing time of tag.

“It virtually empowers the travellers to demand the housekeeper on running train any time. Soon this facility will be adopted by other units of Railways,” the spokesperson added.

The RFID based mechanism to ensure scheduled cleaning has already been started on train no. 12133/12134 Mumbai-Mangalore Express, 12137/12138 Mumbai-Ferozpur Punjab Mail, 12163/12164 Dadar-Chennai Egmore Express and 11019/11020 Mumbai-Bhubaneshwar Konark Express.

“Now, the beginning of RFID based monitoring mechanism will mark paradigm shift in the way the cleanliness of running trains were being managed so far. Such systems are classic examples of exploiting the potential of IT tools and will be milestones in honouring the government’s commitment of Swachh Bharat,” said the spokesperson.

The RFID move comes right after the Mumbai Division of CR has already started an SMS facility (on 58888) and a website www.cleanmycoach.com to take care of unscheduled demand of cleaning by passengers in running trains, which have proved very useful to ensure cleanliness, said a CR Spokesperson.

'Swachh' drives away stink & mess from New Delhi station

NEW DELHI: Surprise inspections, hefty fines and strict vigil have ensured that New Delhi railway station looks clean and tidy and meets commuters' expectations. When TOI visited the country's largest and busiest station, it was in for a surprise to see clean tracks, stink-free washrooms and comfortable waiting rooms.

Thanks to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Northern Railway has taken a slew of measures to raise the sanitation standard of the station. Arun Arora, divisional railway manager, Northern Railway, said, "Keeping the station premises clean is a collective responsibility of the rail administration, vendors and commuters. He said these initiatives had been taken over the past two months on the lines of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and that the administration aimed at making the station one of the clean stations in the country.

"Our surprise visits have made an impact. The staff have become punctual and perform their duties properly. Also, our teams have intensified efforts to catch those found littering and fine them up to Rs 500. We have also issued strict instructions to the vendors to keep emptying their bins at regular intervals. Stickers and bills have been removed from walls ad metal poles are being polished regularly," Arora added.


He said such steps were helpful in reminding even the commuters to maintain cleanliness at the station premises.

Besides its own staff, the railway administration has engaged three private firms for the sanitation work. These companies have hired 300 workers to clean the tracks, platforms and station buildings. "The three firms — VPSSR Facilities, Primus Solution Enterprises and Apcon India — are working with us. There are 80 railway staff involved in the entire operation," the senior railway official said.

Appreciating these initiatives, commuters said there were some visible changes at the station. "Even though we are yet to achieve international standards in terms of sanitation and cleanliness, whatever the railways have done deserves appreciation. Of course, there are not adequate sitting arrangements on the platforms but people can even sit on the floor as it looks pretty clean. It looks good to see the sanitary volunteers around. It's a rare sight at Indian railway stations," said Mainak, one of the commuters.

Arora said though three companies were involved in sanitation work, a new project would be launched soon. "A comprehensive cleaning contract is being planned by the commercial department. This will replace all the existing contracts given by various departments," he said.
