Smart City :20 cities named for Smart City facelift
Bhubaneswar emerged as the topmost city among the 20 cities which were on Thursday shortlisted to be developed as part of the first batch of the Smart City initiative of the Centre. The NDMC area of Delhi is also among the selected cities.
Some of the other prominent cities selected include Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Jaipur and Bhopal.
Urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu announced the first list of 20 cities which will be developed to have basic infrastructure.
Assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management systems, efficient urban mobility and public transportation, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation are some of the highlights of the initiative.
Surat, Kochi, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Davanagere, Indore, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belagavi, Udaipur, Guwahati, and Ludhiana are the other cities selected in the first batch.
“Nobody can stop an idea whose time has come and this applies to the Smart City (initiative as well),” Mr Naidu said while announcing the list of cities that were selected through the Smart City challenge competition.
Congratulating the winners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I wish the cities the very best as they move forward with implementation and transform urban India.”
The contest was as rigorous and demanding as the civil services competition, Mr Naidu quipped.
“For the first time in the country and perhaps in the world, investments in urban development are being made based on a competition among cities. The results of the competition revealed the unrecognised strength of our federal structure,” he said.
The cities have won based on implementation framework, including feasibility and cost-effectiveness (30 per cent), result orientation (20 per cent), citizen participation (16 per cent), smartness of proposal (10 per cent), strategic plan (10 per cent), vision and goals (5 per cent), evidence-based and key performance (5 per cent) and processes followed (4 per cent).
Naidu said that the various states selected the cities and sent a list of 97 names, out of which 20 have been selected.
A bottom-up rather than top-down approach has been the key planning principle under Smart City Mission, he said.

Tuticorin Chamber of Commerce & Industry draw high Hopes for more Rail projects
Tuticorin (TN): Residents of Tuticorin and traders are expecting more rail infrastructure to connect Madurai and other cities since Tuticorin has been announced as one of the Smart Cities in India by the Centre, according to D.R.Kodeeswaran, Secretary, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The much awaited project of new and short railway route between Tuticorin and Madurai via Aruppukottai should be prioritised with allocation of more funds.
This dream project would create a platform to improve the industrial growth in the southern region of Tamil Nadu since a strong industrial growth is envisaged from the Madurai-Tuticorin industrial corridor, Mr. Kodeeswaran told here on Sunday.
Moreover, the intercity railway link between Tuticorin and Madurai had become the most sought after service among people here, he said. “Since Madurai happens to be the next biggest city falling within 150 km and people have lots of business and other purposes in frequenting Madurai, all are looking forward to this development,” he said.
Doubling of rail track between Tuticorin and Madurai was gaining significance as it would ensure free flow of cargo traffic from Tuticorin seaport and passenger rail traffic.
To tide over delay of trains due to single track, doubling of rail track was essentially required, he reiterated.

TCIL is the first company in India which was awarded the work for designing, supplying, installation, testing and commissioning of GSM-based mobile train radio communication system for Eastern Railway, TCIL Chairman and Managing Director Vimal Wakhlu said in a joint statement
New Delhi: State-owned Telecommunications Consultants of India Ltd (TCIL) has tied up with Chinese telecom gear maker ZTE Corporation to work jointly on Smart Cities and railway projects.
TCIL is the first company in India which was awarded the work for designing, supplying, installation, testing and commissioning of GSM-based mobile train radio communication system for Eastern Railway, TCIL Chairman and Managing Director Vimal Wakhlu said in a joint statement. “ZTE and TCIL together are fully confident in the development of Smart City & Railways business in India in the coming years,” he said.
Under the pact, ZTE and TCIL will jointly work to drive the smart city solutions in India in line with government initiatives, and complete information solutions for Railways. ZTE shall take advantage of the PPP mode recommended by the State Council and the Central Ministry, in which the government provides guiding funds, and support policies, cooperate with operators and social resources to construct and operate Smart Cities, ZTE India CEO Philip Liu said

NBCC said the government intends to develop smart cities and re-development of existing cities, including improvement of quality of civic amenities
New Delhi: State-owned National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC) today said it has formed partnership with a Malaysian joint venture firm for exploring areas for re-development around New Delhi Railway Station.
In a filing to the BSE, NBCC said it has “formed strategic partnership by executing Memorandum of Business Exploration on June 10, 2015 with Malaysian Joint Venture Company China Railway Engineering Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd & Amona Group for exploring further areas of re-development around New Delhi Railway Station.”
NBCC said the government intends to develop smart cities and re-development of existing cities, including improvement of quality of civic amenities.”To contribute to the objectives of the government, NBCC is currently working on re-development of various scheme(s) in the capital,” it added.
NBCC, which is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Urban Development, provides project management consultancy services for construction projects, civil infrastructure for power sector and real estate development.
