CASH Rs 2.4 LAKHS MISSING IN AC COACH

MUMBAI: The CST railway police on Friday arrested a 22-year-old train attendant for stealing Rs2.4 lakhs cash from a passenger's bag after offering his seat while travelling from Jabalpur junction to Dadar Central. The incident occurred on June 24 night till the next day morning. 

The matter was observed when the victim Nagendra Tiwari checked his bag after entering the local train. 

Tiwari found the cash missing after taking local train from Dadar to go to Masjid Bunder. CST railway police senior inspector Shivaji Shinde said they have arrested Sunil Pandey, attendant of the AC coach of Mahanagari Express for theft. "Pandey committed the offence after giving the seat in the AC coach to the victim. We have recovered Rs2.3lakhs from the accused," said Shinde. 

Pandey has been booked under the Indian Penal Code section 379 (theft). The money was found in Pandey's bag after the railway police questioned all the attendants of Mahanagari express based on Tiwari's complaint. In the FIR, Tiwari said, "I took the train from Jabalpur Junction. As there was no seat available he got in touch with Pandey the AC coach's attendant. He agreed to give his seat at night." 

Tiwari slept on attendant's seat after keeping his bag (in which money was kept) below. "The victim frequently travels to Mumbai to buy gold ornaments and sell it at Jabalpur. The accused said he stole cash from Tiwari's bag seeking opportunity at night," said the investigators.

The GRP wrote to the Railway authorities after identifying 95 poles on Central, Western and Harbour lines which have been used by thieves to climb and steal phones, handbags and other valuables from local train commuters travelling on the footboard 

In a bid to try and curb the increasing number of cases of thieves climbing signal poles and stealing from local train commuters, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has written to the Railway authorities, asking them to cover the poles with barbed wire and install lights around them.The GRP has identified 95 poles which the thieves used to perch on and steal cellphones, handbags and other valuables of commuters travelling on the footboard in local trains. “There are around 95 poles on the Central, Western and Harbour Lines from where thefts have taken place in the past,” said GRP Commissioner Madhukar Pandey.

The police said most such thefts take place near the Thane, Kalyan, CST, Bandra, Andheri, Vasai and Vashi station areas. The thieves perch on signal poles in the dark, ensuring that passengers can’t see them. If they see a passenger talking on the phone, they hit his or her hand with a stick, making the phone fall down.

In some cases, female commuters have fallen off and suffered severe injuries, and even died, when thieves tried to pull their bags. “We have written to the railways about the matter and are requesting them to put barbed wires on the identified signalling poles so that thieves are unable to climb them.

We have also asked for lights to be installed around the poles,” said Pandey. “If the areas around the poles are lit, passengers will be able to see the accused and be alert,” said another police officer.

Lodge a complaint in running train

Forms to lodge First Information Report/Complaint to Police are now available with the Coach attendants, Conductors, Guards, RPF train escorts in Running Trains and with RPF Assistance Posts, RPF Post / Outpost at important Railway stations. The affected passengers are requested to fill in the forms with relevant information and hand it over to the above mentioned Railway Officials/RPF Personnel.  The same shall be promptly forwarded to the GRP concerned for further necessary action.  

Passengers are not required to break their journey for lodging their complaints with the police.

Performance for lodging complaint /Report by passengers in case of theft of their luggage, Robbery or dacoity in running train is as under: 

1. Name of complainant 
2. Present address in full 
3. Nearest Railway station to the permanent residence 
4. Telephone No. 
5. Date of occurrence 
6. Place of Occurrence 
7. Place, where the complainant detected the occurrence 
8. Train No. and Name 
9. Bogie No.
10. Class in which traveling (Put mark):
        A.C, I Class/AC Sleeper/I class/II class  2 Tier/3 tier/General II class
11. Ticket No.
12. Name of stations in between which occurrence took place
13. Particulars of property looted or stolen and estimate cost thereof
14. Brief particulars of the incident (Theft/Robbery/Dacoity)
15. Name of the person or persons suspected with descriptive roll name and address, if
      known.
            a) The station, where the suspect entrained.
            b) The station, where the suspect detrained.
            c) The station, where such suspect wanted to go.
16. Where you traveling with family.
17. Did the suspect show sympathy towards you to provide seat or place to sleep or advised to put box attached at certain particular place?
18. Addition information to be furnished about occurrence of robbery/dacoity.
    a) Approximate number of criminals and any other particular information about them
        i.e.. language and clothes worn etc.
    b) What type of arms were being carried.
    c) Approximate number of passengers, who were looted.
