Kolkata East West Metro Line2 Connection to Sector V with Salt Lake Stadium Delayed

Kolkata East West Metro Line2 Connection to Sector V with Salt Lake Stadium Delayed
The scheduled start of commercial operation on the first 5.7km stretch of Kolkata’s East West metro Line 2 connecting Sector V with Salt Lake Stadium has again been delayed.
KOLKATA: Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, was reportedly scheduled to inaugurate the first phase of the East West corridor on October 24. However, this has been cancelled following objections by the Commissioner of Rail Safety (CRS) on passenger safety, a senior Ministry of Railways official said.
After an earlier inspection on the first leg of the section in July, CRS flagged concerns on the “defective bearings” on the piers, while instructing the authorities to undertake a software upgrade on the train control and management system. Official’s claims about the issues having been fixed were belied following a second CRS survey that was completed on Thursday. “The CRS report is in the process of getting prepared. As of now, there are no plans to start commercial operations on the stretch,” a Ministry of Railways official said.
Major uncertainties persist on whether work will restart on the unfinished 10.8km underground section of the line. Construction of the unfinished section of the line was halted in August following the collapse of approximately 100 old buildings in central Kolkata’s Bowbazar area after the earth caved in during tunnelling work in the neighbourhood, forcing residents to evacuate.
Indian Railways (IR), the implementing agency, has solicited international tunnelling experts including Mr Paul Vireli of South Africa, Mr Guy Bridges from Hong Kong and geotechnical engineer Mr John Endocott from Singapore.
The East West line, originally slated to open in 2012, is designed to connect the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah. Of the 16.6km, 5.8km will be elevated and 10.8km will run underground. Twin 520m-long tunnels under the Hooghly River are planned as part of the underground section.
With a project cost of Rs 48.7bn ($US 684.5m) the East West Line was originally conceived as a 14.67km line. After a major realignment in 2016, the length was increased to 16.55km. Following delays including foreign currency losses, project cost have increased approximately 80% to nearly Rs 90bn.
The 27.22km Line 1 from Noapara to Kavi Subhash is currently Kolkata’s only operational metro line, while three new lines are in various stages of construction.

CMRL:Underground Metro all set to roll

CMRL:Underground Metro all set to roll

Thirumangalam-Nehru Park stretch likely to be opened by end of next week

The first underground stretch of Chennai Metro Rail is likely to be opened by the end of next week, reliable sources said.
As the model code of conduct is in effect for the byelection in the R.K. Nagar constituency, it is not clear if Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has sought an exemption from the Election Commission to inaugurate the stretch.

CMRS inspection

The underground stretch from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park, a distance of about 8 km, first needs a mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.

The inspection is likely to happen in a few days, official sources said. Soon after they get the certification from CMRS, the stretch can be thrown open, subject to approval from the State for the inauguration. The stretch has received safety clearances from various other agencies in the past few weeks.

The construction of this stretch has been on since 2012, when the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was deployed underneath Nehru Park.

Over the last five years, tunnelling, laying of tracks and the construction of stations were completed on this stretch.

The first service of Chennai Metro Rail — an elevated stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur — was opened in June 2015. Seven months ago, the second one from Little Mount to Chennai airport, also an elevated stretch, became operational.

At present, the fares of Chennai Metro Rail range from ₹ 10-50 for general passengers. If the underground stretch is opened, the maximum fare is likely to go up to ₹ 60.

Kolkata’s East-West Metro tunneling to start from Howrah in Sept

Kolkata’s East-West Metro tunneling to start from Howrah in Sept

Kolkata: Metro Railway will make an all-out effort to resolve issues that have affected the construction of the East-West corridor from the Howrah Maidan end. This was indicated by Metro Railway general manager A K Kapoor, who inspected the stretch from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector-V on Thursday and spoke to various stakeholders of the project.

Kapoor is also the chairman of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), which is in charge of the E-W corridor. Work at the Howrah-end is likely to start before railway minister Suresh Prabhu’s next visit to Kolkata in the third week of September.

“At present, no work is going on at the Howrah end as a court case is pending on the matter. During his last visit to Kolkata, Prabhu met chief minister Mamata Banerjee and was assured of all assistance. With help from state government, the issues holding up work at Howrah will be resolved soon. A tunnel-boring machine will then be lowered at Howrah Maidan. The GM instructed all officials to ensure that deadlines are met,” said a senior official.

During his last visit to Kolkata in August, Prabhu had said that the first phase of the E-W corridor, which stretches from Salt Lake Sector-V to Mahakaran, will be completed by June, 2018. During his next visit, the minister is likely to announce commencement of work on the technical portion, including laying of ballast-less tracks and signaling systems. If the June, 2018, deadline is to be met, officials will also have to expedite work on the stretch between Sealdah and Mahakaran via Esplanade.

The original alignment of the E-W Metro link was via CR Avenue and Brabourne Road. But, the new alignment will pass through Esplanade and Mahakaran before going under the Hooghly towards Howrah Maidan. The railways ministry was initially reluctant to bear the additional costs for the changes in alignment. But after much confusion and a prod by Calcutta high court, the ministry relented.

Chennai Metro rail fires Gammon, stops tunnelling work

Chennai Metro rail fires Gammon, stops tunnelling work

Chennai (MAS): Underground tunnelling of metro rail along Anna Salai here has halted and is likely to remain so for several months as Chennai Metro Rail has terminated the 2,000crore contract with Gammon India-Mosmetrostroy.

The decision was taken after Gammon India delayed work and couldn’t get its Russian partner Mosmetrostroy to resume work on the last 3km stretch.

This would mean that the metro corridor, which is one year behind schedule and struggling to meet an extended deadline of 2016-end, may not be ready till late 2017. This 23.1km corridor, from Washermenpet to Airport, includes 14.3km underground.

Authorities are planning to float fresh tenders for the remaining work worth 800crore. The process is expected to take three or four months. If everything goes according to Plan B, work is likely to resume in January.

The Gammon-Mosmetrostroy joint venture had bagged contracts to build tunnels and underground stations between Government Estate to Saidapet in February 2011. It could complete only 60% of the work.

Konkan Railway plans to set up India’s best Tunnel Technology Institute at Goa

Mumbai: Konkan Railway has made big plans to celebrate 25 years since some of the best engineers in the country constructed the 741 kilometre line — possibly the biggest railway endeavour since Independence — in 1990. The most ambitious part of the 25-year tribute is to build a state-of-the-art Tunneling Technology Institute at Goa, an apt gift from a rail line which has 91 tunnels — totaling 84 kilometres — on its route.

KR has also completed around 22 km of tunnels in Jammu & Kashmir as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla project. KR in the years past has worked on the tunneling and ventilation of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as a water tunnel in Amdhra Pradesh for irrgation.

B.P.Tayal, Chairman & Managing Director of KR, said, “It will be a true gift from KR to the nation. At the moment there are no institutes in the country that are teaching advanced tunneling technology and we have to depend on foreign experts. At the same time, the demand for tunneling in railways, especially in Jammu & Kashmir and the north-east, in hydro-electric power projects, underground metro lines and even highways like the one coming up in Kashmir, will be immense. So, having a state-of-the-art institute will help the country is a big way.”

Money set aside for the preliminary activities that will go into the creation of the institute is in the range of Rs5 crore, said officials.

Apart from the tunnel technology institute, more than 50 activities have been lined up over the next few months, said officials. A section of officials are hoping that the 25-year celebrations — that too under a railway minister who hails from the Konkan — will see the ministry granting sanction for the long overdue electrification and track doubling plans for the railway line.

A KR proposal to electrify its 741-km route between Roha and Thokur at a cost of Rs720 crore was cleared by Prabhu on November 23 last year. A Rs.1,500 crore doubling survey was approved by the KR board of directors on October 29 last year and it was been sent to the railway board.
