NOKIA WORLD FIST LTE-R MOBILE NETWORK FOR RAILWAYS

SOUTH KOREA: Telecoms group Nokia is to supply Korea Rail Network Authority with what it says would be the ‘world's first’ LTE-R mobile broadband network to support railway operations.

The contract announced on November 14 covers the 120 km Wonju – Gangneung route which is under construction for opening ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

The communications network will be based on the LTE-R version of 4G LTE technology which is being developed for mission-critical railway applications, and will support train operations at speeds up to 250 km/h. Nokia said the project is intended to serve as a model for future LTE-R deployments, and would help to support standardisation efforts.

Nokia is supply radio access network base stations, along with its NetAct network management software. As well as covering trains, stations and other facilities on the route, the network will be designed to be interoperable with other LTE networks supporting public safety and maritime operations, as well as legacy VHS and trunked radio system networks.

Urban Rail boom in Southeast Asia could mean major Opportunity for India’s Infrastructure & Service Business

Thailand has been accusing China of overlooking laws and environmental protection standards. Some countries appreciate the Chinese way of doing business, because “their work is fast and inexpensive, but breach of local laws and lack of concern for environment are a cause of serious concern” according to a source from the Thai construction industry

Projects to construct and extend Urban Railway systems – an indispensable mode of transportation in major cities, are being planned throughout Southeast Asia.

Hopes are high that subways, elevated railways and other urban rail systems will ease the traffic congestion plaguing metropolises that have seen population growth as a byproduct of economic development.

Expansion opportunities abound for Japanese firms, given the nation’s outstanding reputation for safety and precision in the field, but Chinese companies have entered the race in recent years and are quickly catching up.

In the north of Bangkok, construction of Bang Sue MRT Station is under way at the former site of a 200-hectare cargo terminal. The anticipated opening date is 2019.

The station is a part of a 26.3-kilometer-long Red Line elevated railway project that has an expected total price tag of more than ¥370 billion. It will be connected to a separate high-speed railway that is expected to employ Shinkansen technology and a railway linking two suburban airports.

With help of local general contractors, international consulting firm Nippon Koei Co. is overseeing the construction. “We actually hope to develop an area like Shinjuku,” said Toshimasa Kiuchi, a senior adviser at the company.

The Thai government plans to extend Bangkok’s urban railways to 515 kilometers in total by 2029, a big increase from roughly 85 kilometers at present. The Red Line is part of that overall plan. Trains account for only 6 per cent of Bangkok’s use of public transit, far below Seoul’s 51 per cent and Hong Kong’s 46 per cent. The Thai government hopes to raise the figure to at least 40 per cent.

Thai Finance Minister Sommai Phasee has stressed the importance of urban railways that make it easier to commute within the city and end traffic jams by providing connections to the suburbs. According to Phasee, such systems are indispensable for accelerating economic development and growth.

Technological advantages

Many Japanese companies are already involved in the construction of urban railways in Southeast Asia. For a new line scheduled to open partially in 2018 in Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam, an underground section is being built by Shimizu Corp. and Mazda Corp. Sumitomo Corp. and local general contractors are handling the portion above the ground.

“Japanese firms excel at building underground tunnels in urban areas where old buildings remain,” explained Toshiyuki Sarashina, deputy director of Shimizu’s Hanoi office. The Vietnamese side has given Japan high marks in this respect.

In Jakarta, two subway lines are set to be constructed with Japanese financial assistance. Japanese companies earn high marks for the quality of their work, but that work is expensive, according to Surapong Laoha-Unya, chief executive officer of the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Co., which operates the capital’s elevated railways.

In Bangkok, Japanese firms were asked to lead part of the urban railway construction, but German and Chinese companies were tasked with building the cars and train operation systems. The Japanese companies involved – Marubeni Corp., Toshiba Corp. and East Japan Railway Co. – finally received orders for the production of cars and other manufactured products for the Purple Line scheduled to open in 2016.

The total cost of building a railway can run as high as several hundred billion yen. There is fierce international competition to win contracts for such projects in major Asian cities.

China has been elevating its profile, particularly in the field of maintenance and infrastructure improvement. But unlike the Japanese government and firms, China has been accused of overlooking laws and environmental protection standards. Some countries appreciate the Chinese way of doing business, because “their work is fast and inexpensive,” according to a source from the Thai construction industry.

Launched in June after a merger of two companies, China’s state-run automaker is by far the world’s largest firm in the industry.

A signing ceremony took place last Monday for the founding of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which is expected to start operations within the year.

“After the bank launches, China will get more aggressive and competition to win infrastructure development contracts in Southeast Asia will become even more intense,” a Japanese government source said.

Railway Board chief seeks enhanced passenger safety, security

Calling for special emphasis on safety and security of the passengers with focus on passenger amenities, Railway Board chairman A.K. Mital on Friday instructed carrying on more field inspections for the purpose.

Mital, who held a high-level meeting with various officials of the South Eastern Railway (SER) at its headquarters here to review and evaluate its performance, stressed on adherence to safety norms by all railwaymen in the field and instructed that more field inspections by officers should be carried out specially during night time.

He also stressed on the speedy completion of various pending SER projects.

Discussions relating to other aspects like safety, punctuality, freight loading, earnings, critical capacity enhancement projects, mobility, asset failures were also held.

SER general manager Radhey Shyam claimed punctuality of trains has improved in the first three months of the current fiscal as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Initiatives/Achievements of Indian Railways in Last One Year

Followings are the initiatives/achievements of Ministry of Railways in the last one year:-

PASSENGER AMENITIES & SERVICES

1. All Indian helpline no. 138 launched for passengers to register complaints etc.
2. All India Security helpline 182 launched to help report any unsavory incidents.
3.A ‘Customer Complaint Web Portal and Mobile Application’ (Android/Windows based mobile app) launched.
4.The scheme of paper less unreserved ticketing using Mobile phone started. The first pilot introduced in the Egmore-Tambaram Suburban Section of Chennai.
5.Next generation e-ticketing system introduced increasing booking speed by around 4 times.
6 E-catering services introduced in 134 pairs of trains with a view to serve meal to the passengers at their seat by placing order through a phone call, SMS or website.
7.The facility of SMS alerts started on informing the status of reserved tickets.
8.SMS alerts to give wake up calls introduced.
9.Yatri Ticket /Sewa Kendra (YTSK) Scheme launched to allow private agents to operate ticketing terminals for selling reserved as well as unreserved tickets.
10.RO drinking water units commissioned at Dwarka, Gadag, HNZM, Katihar, Madurai and Tirupati Stations.
11. Passenger amenities were improved at 108 stations under the scheme of Adarsh Stations during 2014-15.
12.Indian Railways started six pilgrims special tourist trains to cover Hindu Pilgrim centres, Jain Pilgrim centres and Sikh Pilgrim centres. More different pilgrim centres being planned in subsequent phases.
13.Mobile App for security of women launched in Mumbai suburban trains in the first phase.
14.Decision taken to provide CCTV cameras on train coaches in order to improve security measures.

INFRASTRUCTURE

45.In 2014-15,  1983 km of railway lines have been commissioned and 1375 km of railway electrification completed. This is the best ever performance of Indian Railways.

47.Rail Wheel Plant, Bela commissioned and regular production started.

NORTH EAST

57.The much awaited Lumding-Silchar Broad gauge section inaugurated giving seamless BG connectivity to Barak Valley of Assam with the rest of the country.
58.Meghalaya comes on the rail map with the flagging off the first ever train from Guwahati to Medipathar in Meghalaya by the Prime Minister.
59.The Prime Minister laid the foundation for a new line to take rail connectivity to Mizoram’s capital Aizwal.
60.Director train connectivity started from Delhi to Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.
61.The first ever perishable cargo centre set up Adarsh Nagar station in Delhi to help farmers.

FINANCIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

62.During 2014-15, the Railways’ total earnings were Rs.157880.50 crore, registering an increase of 12.16 per cent over last year.
63.During 2014-15, Railways carried 1097.578 million tonnes of revenue earning freight, showing an increase of 4.18 per cent over the last year.
64.Railways succeeded in achieving the 91.1% target of operating ratio in 2014-15 which is an improvement over 93.6% achieved in 2013-14.

HIGH SPEED TRAINS

65.Interim Report of feasibility study by Japan for Bullet Train on Mumbai-Ahemdabad corridor received. The final report expected in June/July 2015.  China to undertake feasibility study of introducing Bullet Train on New Delhi-Chennai corridor.

MISCELLANEOUS

66.  Indian Railways lent helping hand during the Nepal earthquake tragedy by providing ‘Rail Neer’ bottles and by transporting Nepal evacuees. Similarly, Railways also helped during the J&K floods. Railways were in the forefront in extending help to the Indian nationals returning from Yemen also.
