INSPECTION OF THE NEWLY CONVERTED BROAD GAUGE RAILWAY LINE BETWEEN PODANUR - POLLACHI AND SPEED TRIAL
Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore will inspect the newly converted broad gauge railway line in Podanur – Pollachi section o­n 23rd& 24th March, 2017.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bangalore will also conduct a high speed trial run in Podanur – Pollachi section o­n 24th March, 2017 between 14.00 hrs. – 19.00 hrs.
All users of railway lines between Podanur – Pollachi are hereby cautioned not to approach / trespass the railway line.

LEAVING PALAKKAD

  • Train 06713 will leave Palakkad at 8.25 p.m and reach Pollachi at 9.15 p.m. 
  • Train  No,06343 will leave Palakkad at 08.05 a.m. and reach Pollachi at 9.45 a.m.
  • Train 06769 will leave Palakkad at 4.30 a.m. and reach Pollachi at 6 a.m. 
  • Train No.06346 will leave Palakkad at 5.30 p.m. and reach Pollachi at 7 p.m
LEAVING POLLACHI
  • Train 06345 will leave Pollachi at 10.15 a.m. and reach Palakkad at 11.45 a.m. 
  • Train 06770 will leave Pollachi at 8.45 p.m. and reach Palakkad at 10 p.m.
  • Train 06344 will leave Pollachi at 7.30 p.m. and reach Palakkad at 9.15 p.m.
  • Train No.06712 will leave Pollachi at 4.30 a.m. and reach Palakkad at 6.15 a.m.

SOUTHERN RAILWAY (SR) conducts Load Tolerance Test on new Palakkad-Pollachi rail route

Palakkad (PGT): Giving new hopes of resuming regular train services linking Southern Tamil Nadu with Kerala and Konkan routes, a load tolerance test was conducted on Sunday in the newly gauge converted Palakkad-Pollachi rail stretch using a goods train comprising 42 wagons. The goods train reached Palakkad Junction from Mangalore by 1 p.m. carrying bags of fertilizer.

There were onlookers on either side of the tracks to see the goods train embarking on its maiden trip.

Instead of taking the Palakkad-Coimbatore-Erode route, the train bound for Tiruchirappalli and Madurai was redirected through the new route to study the load tolerance level of the new broad gauge route. It reached Pollachi in 45 minutes and proceeded to Tiruchirappalli via Palani. The speed was 45 km/hour.

It was only two weeks ago, the safety inspection of the route was conducted. Railway authorities informed that it was the prevailing code of conduct in Kerala as part of the local body election that prevented them from resuming train services in the route soon after the safety inspection.

The train comprising 42 wagons with fertiliser left Palakkad junction at 15.30 hours and was taken via Palakkad Town to Pollachi. The train continued its journey from Pollachi to Madurai and Tiruchirappally. The goods train transported 3,720 tonnes of fertiliser from the unit of the Mangaluru Chemicals and Fertilisers in Mangaluru. While one half of the consignment headed to Kudal Nagar under Madurai division, the other portion went to the Tiruchi goods shed.

Of the 42 wagons in the goods train, 15 of them were to Kudal Nagar in Madurai division and 27 to Tiruchirapally. The new development will enable the Railways to save a lot of money on fuel. Currently, there is a saving of 120 kilometres to Dindigul. Earlier, a passenger had to go to Erode and then to Karur and proceed to Dindigul from Palakkad.

The train stopped three kilometers away from Pollachi due to rising gradient (between Anamalai road and Pollachi). After a five minute halt it continued its journey and finally reached Pollachi junction at 6 pm. Sources said that on Tuesday a goods train will be operated from Meelavitan (Madurai) division to Palakkad.

Efforts are now on to resume train services by November second week. In the initial phase, two passenger trains from Tiruchirappalli would be extended to Palakkad in the new route.

Also there are plans to extend Thiruvananthapuram-Palakkad Amrita Express to Madurai in the new route. The train is at present parked in Palakkad for more than 14 hours daily.

Officials said the Palakkad-Pollachi stretch had handled an average of 300 tonnes of goods per month during the days in which it was a meter gauge route. The route would re-establish direct link between Mangalore Port and Southern Tamil Nadu. Between Madurai and Mangalore, the distance would be reduced by 120 km.

Palakkad Division plans to run speed trials on new Pollachi-Palakkad BG Line

Palghat: Southern Railway — Palakkad Division is planning to construct a speed trial run on the new Pollachi-Palakkad BG line on September 9, 2015 (Wednesday) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A release from the Palakkad Division said that in accordance with the advice of Deputy Chief Engineer, Gauge Conversion at Podanur, speed trials have to be conducted prior to the inspection of Commissioner of Railway Safety and subsequent commissioning of the section.

Speed trial will be conducted using one diesel engine augmented only with a luggage-cum-brake van at an average speed of 80 Kilometre per hour.

The test run will be conducted between 09.00 hours and 17.00 hours. Similar test runs will continue until the section is inspected by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

The public are cautioned not to cross the railway track and refrain from working in proximity of railway lines.

Caution advised

Public and road vehicle users are requested to remain extra vigilant at the level crossings in the section.

Speed trial marks the completion of the gauge conversion on this 55-km stretch, which was taken up as part of the Podanur-Pollachi, Pollachi-Palakkad, Pollachi-Palani-Dindigul section.

With now gauge conversion works having been completed on all sections up to Pollachi and now with speed trials up to Palakkad, the Podanur-Pollachi section remains an island with the gauge conversion works not being completed.

The island section has resulted in the western part of the State being cut off from southern part.

After trouble over land acquisition and then financial constraints, the project is progressing now and expectations are that it should be thrown open for passenger traffic by mid-2016.

Train services between Pollachi and Palakkad would commence within the coming weeks

COIMBATORE:  Train services between Pollachi and Palakkad would commence within the coming weeks, said top railway officials.

"All work has been completed at the 54-km stretch between Pollachi and Palakkad, and train service would commence soon after line inspection by SK Mittal, Commissioner, Railway Safety, Bangalore," said R Venkatasamy, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), who carried out an  inspection on Wednesday.

Mittal's inspection on the line is likely to be next week.

"Frequent rains due to the southwest monsoon had disrupted work leading to the delay. Several contractors were engaged for the work. Labour crisis added to the delay," said Venkatasamy.

As many as `400 crore has been spent in the gauge conversion work between Pollachi and Palakkad, which was started on 2008. Likewise, gauge conversion of the 40-kilometre stretch between Podanur and Pollachi would take another year. About three lakh cubic meters of rock near Kinathukadavu is said to hamper the conversion work.

"A huge rock is located at a depth of 40 feet inside the earth and it will take seven months to remove it. Of the 40 kms, we have completed broad gauge work up to 30 km so far. We will have to construct six road over-bridges and road under-bridges," said the official.

Recently, railway authority took over 20 acres of land for gauge conversion work near Kinathukadavu on the Podanur-Pollachi section.

Coimbatore (CBE): Even as the gauge conversion of the Pollachi-Coimbatore railway track is likely to be delayed by at least another 10 months, the gauge conversion of the Pollachi-Palakkad track is nearing completion. Once this project is complete, people from Chennai can take a direct train from the Egmore station to Palani or Pollachi and back.

In what would be considered as welcome news to the lakhs of Lord Muruga devotees in-and-around Chennai who visit Palani regularly, the conversion of the 56-km Palakkad-Pollachi railway track conversion from a metre gauge to a broad gauge at the cost of nearly 224 crore is almost complete.

“We are waiting for the commissioner of railway safety to inspect the track and clear it for usage. It should happen by June-end,” said the Palakkad railway division spokesperson. This will allow pilgrims to take a train from Chennai directly to Palani or Pollachi. “Presently, these pilgrims need to interchange trains at Dindigul,” said the spokesperson. “Most pilgrims take a train from Chennai to Coimbatore or Palakkad, and then hire a car or take a bus from there to Palani,” R Murugan, manager of Sakthi Tours and Travels, said.

However, it will take almost another year for the people of Coimbatore to benefit from the gauge conversion. Residents of the city would be able to take a direct train to Palani only if the track to Pollachi is converted into a broad gaugeThe spokesperson of the Salem division of Southern Railways, reiterated that once gauge-conversion of the Coimbatore-Pollachi track is complete, we can run direct trains to Palani

However, this gauge-conversion work of the route till Pollachi is going on at a snail’s space due to the shortage of funds. “No funds were allotted to the project even during this year’s railway budget,” said an official from the railway construction department.
