Firm to survey Pune-Nashik rail line
Pune: The long-pending proposal of laying a railway track between Pune and Nashik has finally moved ahead with the Central Railway recently announcing a final location survey for the project.
The survey will propose the alignment of the track and study in detail various other aspects like location of stations, loading-unloading places, possible freight and passenger quantum and requirement of land for infrastructure. The railway administration has invited tenders to appoint a firm to carry out the survey work, which is expected to be completed within six months.
The new line will have a total length of 265 km and will connect the two fastest growing cities in the state. Officials in the railway administration said the proposal has been under consideration for long and that the plan gained momentum in the last couple of years.
The Central Railway has earmarked Rs 1.98 crore for the survey. Officials said that it is important to get details of the land where the track is to be laid. The survey will focus on land-holding pattern and study the villages along the proposed alignment. Physical inspection of surrounding areas will also be done. The railway line is proposed to run along towns like Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Manchar, Narayangaon, Alephata and Sinnar.
Nashik is the only city in the state which is not directly connected to Pune with a rail link. At present, all trains between Pune and Nashik go via Kalyan or commuters have to travel to Manmad and then take a train to Nashik, spending more than six to seven hours in travelling time.
Besides commuters, there have been repeated demands from local MPs in Pune and rural areas for a direct rail line between Pune and Nashik.
Vilas Joshi, a city-based entrepreneur, said that the state highway between Pune and Nashik is inadequate to cater to the increasing demands of travellers between the two cities. “A direct rail connection will also help in bringing down additional load on the Pune-Kalyan and Pune-Manmad rail sections,” he added.
Experts said a direct line between the two cities was vital considering the pace at which the two cities were growing. The state government has developed high-class industrial belts at Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Sinnar and Sangamner, which could benefit from the rail connection. The survey should lead to a logical conclusion and ensure that the project is cleared without any hurdles.
The announcement for the new line survey between Pune and Nashik was made by former union railway minister Mamata Banerjee in 2009. In her budget for the year 2010-11, the minister had announced that the new line (along with 190 other rail links) will be taken up in the 12th plan. The state government has already agreed to share 50 % of the cost of the new line project. The Railway Board had sent the proposal to construct the 265-km new line connecting Pune and Nashik to the then planning commission, now transformed as NITI Aayog.

Railways have decided to run 2 UNRESERVED special trains between Nasik Road - Darbhanga to clear the extra rush of pilgrims during Kumbha Mela being held at Nasik.

Nashik (NSK): The railways are planning to add three coaches to each train that passes through the city to cater to the rush on the days of the holy dip during Kumbh Mela. The coaches may be opened in Nashik to allow passengers to board the trains from the city.
“The plan is to add three coaches to every train passing through the city to ensrue movement of pilgrims from Nashik after Parvani Snan. The coaches may be opened at Nashik Road Railway Station to allow people to board the trains and head to their destinations,” an officer from Bhusawal railway division said.
Approximately 40 north-bound trains pass through Nashik in each direction daily for Punjab, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam.
“The addition of three coaches will arm the railways to carry more 17,000 passengers. This will be in addition to 12 trains that will be run to and from dedicated destinations calling,” the officer said.
The special trains will be limited to only four parvani days of kumbh mela as first two parvanis for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar have common dates and the third parvani for Nashik and Trimbakeshwar are on two different dates – making four major events.
Each train is likely to carry at the most 3,500 persons, which will add up the daily movement of 45,000 persons from the city. With additional trains and the more coaches planned for Kumbh, the railways will effectively be bale to cater to 62,000 people a day.
The railways has announced that all the trains coming from Mumbai will come on platform number (PF) 2 instead of platform number 1, from June 25 till September 30.
In the meantime, the work of the platform and foot over bridge at Nashik is nearing completion. The ramp and the platform will be ready in the next few days.
The public works department has completed most of the road construction assignments except the two bridges on the 21-km Adgaon-Lakhalgaon-Shinde road. One of the bridges is to be built over the railway tracks and the other over the Godavari.
“This is an important road to be constructed outside Nashik city to facilitate movement of traffic between Adgaon and Shinde. It will ensure that traffic does not enter the city. Except for the bridges, the road will be ready in next couple of weeks,” a public works department official said.
The work of the construction of ghats at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar has been completed. “We have added over 4,600 metre of ghats at both the locations. The work of beautification of the ghats is underway,” PWD officer said.
On the strengthening of the network connections for mobile connectivity, the administration said the Communication on Wheels (COW) project would be in place by July 30.
“The administration will allot places to the various organisations at sadhugram in Nashik on July 6. By August 15, it is likely that the people will start arriving in large numbers. The flag hoisting will be done on August 19 by the sadhus at sadhugram. Considering all these aspects, the network connections are expected to be in place by August 1,” an officer said.
In Trimbakeshwar, all the roads in the town that were uprooted to lay fresh pipelines for drinking water supply by the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran are now being relaid. The water supply work was completed long ago and the relaying of the road is now nearing completion,” the official added.

Railways plan more trains for smooth travel of Pilgrims during Nashik’s Kumbh Mela
Nashik (NK): The railway officials have begun drawing out fresh plans to ensure smooth travel on the return journeys during Kumbh Mela. Nearly one crore pilgrims are expected to arrive in Nashik over two months for the mega religious congregation.
Officials said pilgrims are expected to reach the city and adjoining town of Trimbakeshwar in batches during Kumbh but there is a rush to return after the event. A team of top railway, revenue and district officials met in Mumbai on Monday to chalk out the plans for people management.
District guardian minister Girish Mahajan had called the meeting attended by senior railway officials, revenue commissioner Eknath Davle, municipal commissioner Praveen Gedam, district collector and others. The guardian minister asked the officials to chalk out plans to avoid of the repeat of the Allahabad stampedes in 2013.
On February 10, 2013 when the pilgrims were returning from the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, a stampede broke out killing 36 pilgrims. The administration has been asked to work out plans to prevent such mishaps.
“The railway has a capacity of handling 75,000 passengers. We are expecting around a crore pilgrims for the Kumbh Mela. Around 20% of these are dependent on railways, which means 20 lakh passengers. For this, we need to manage the flow of passengers,” said sources from the railway.
“The guardian minister asked us to work out on how the number of trains and the number of boggies can be increased for crowd management and the infrastructure that can be provided. In the first week of June, railway officials will visit the city to draw the plan,” said Davle.
He said that people come the city in batches but want to return after the Parvani days. “People come from different parts of the country and want to go to different destinations on their return. Evacuation is always difficult when people are in a hurry to leave. Under such circumstances, managing the flow of crowd is very crucial,” he said.
