Unreserved Express Special Trains

As approved by Railway Board, the following trains will resume service as Unreserved Express Specials as detailed below.

1. TrainNo.06812 / 06817CoimbatoreJn.-Mettupalayam – Coimbatore JnUnreservedExpressMEMU Specials (Except o­nSundays). Date of commencement 07th February, 2022.

Train No. 06812 Coimbatore In – Mettupalayam Unreserved Express MEMU Special (Except  Sundays) will leave Coimbatore Jn at 09.35 hrs o­n and from 07th February, 2022 and reach Mettupalayam at 10.20 hrs the same day.

In return direction, Train No. 06817 Mettupalayam – Coimbatore Jn Unreserved Express MEMU Special (Except  Sundays) will leave Mettupalayam at 16.45 hrs o­n and from 07th February, 2022 and reach Coimbatore Jn at 17.30 hrs the same day.

Composition: 8 - Car MEMU

SPECIAL TRAIN FROM METTUPALAYAM TO UDAGAMANDALAM ON 02ND OCTOBER, 2021

In commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence, ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is being celebrated throughout the country in a grand manner, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture.  Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.

To make the commemorative events more customer and citizen centric, an activity has been planned by the Railway Board – to run a Special Train o­n 02nd October, 2021 in the UNESCO heritage site of Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR).

Accordingly, Train No.06147, a fully reserved ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Special Train, will be run from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (one way), the UNESCO heritage site of NMR section, o­n 02.10.2021.

The timings, seating capacity and fares of the Special Train are as detailed below.

Timings of the Special Train

Train No.06147 Mettupalayam – Udagamandalam ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Special Train will leave Mettupalayam at 09.10 hrs. o­n 02.10.2021.  Enroute to Udagamandalam, the train will have o­nly o­ne stoppage – at Coonoor.  The Special Train will reach Coonoor at 12.30 hrs.  Leaving Coonoor at 12.55 hrs., the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Special Train will reach Udagamandalam at 14.25 hrs. o­n 02.10.2021.

Seating Capacity

The train will have 4 coaches, offering 72 First Class Seats and 100 Second Class Seats in total.

Fares

The fares for travel by the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Special Train are the same as that of the NMR weekly Special Train

  • From Mettupalayam to Coonoor  -  Rs.1100 in First Class; Rs.800 in Second Class.
  • From Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam  -  Rs.1450 in First Class; Rs.1050 in Second Class.
  • From Coonoor to Udagamandalam  -  Rs.550 in First Class; Rs.450 in Second Class.

The fares are excluding GST and Reservation Charges.

Advance Reservations for travel by ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ Special Train are open.

Introduction of MEMU Service between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam
Mettupalayam, on the foothills of Nilgiris is the gateway to Nilgiri Mountain Railway. NMR, the UNESCO listed Mountain Railway System gets scores of tourist footfalls from all over the world. Coimbatore Junction, the major railhead near Mettupalayam is well connected by train services from major destinations in South India. Presently, there are 5 train services interconnecting Coimbatore and Mettupalayam that include Blue Mountain (Nilgiri) Express and 4 Passenger trains.
To handle the extra rush of passengers travelling to NMR destinations, a new MEMU service will be run between Coimbatore Junction and Mettupalayam from 01.02.2020. The details are mentioned below:
  • T.No.66622 Coimbatore – Mettupalayam MEMU service (Daily) will depart from Coimbatore Junction at 20.25 hrs and with Stoppages at Coimbatore North Junction (20.31/20.32), Tudiyalur (20.36/20.37), Periyanayakanpalayam (20.41/20.42), Karaimadai (20.52/20.53) and reach Mettupalayam at 21.15 hrs the same day.
  • T.No. 66623 Mettupalayam – Coimbatore MEMU service (Daily) will depart from Mettupalayam at 19.00 hrs and with Stoppages at Karaimadai (19.09/19.10), Perianayakanpalayam (19.19/19.20), Tudiyalur ( 19.24/19.25), Coimbatore North Junction (19.29/19.30) will reach Coimbatore at 19.50 hrs the same day.
  • Composition : 8 Car MEMU

NMR Special Train Services
To meet the demand of tourists the following special train will run in Nilgiri Mountain Railway section  to clear the extra rush of the passengers.
1.Train No 06171 Mettupalayam –  Udagamandalam   special train will leave Mettupalayam  at 09.10 hrs  and reach Udagamandalam at 14.25 hrs  on  Every Saturday from 4th, 11th,18th,25th January 2020, 1st ,8th,15th,22nd,29th February 2020, 7th,14th,21st and 28th March 2020. (13 services). 
2.Train No 06172 Udagamandalam – Mettupalayam special train will leave Udagamandalam at 11.25 hrs o­n Sundays  and reach Mettupalayam at 16.20 hrs    on  5th, 12th,19,26th January 2020, 2nd, 9th,16th,23rd February 2020, 1st , 8th,15th,22nd and 29th March 2020. (13 services). 
Advance reservations for  above NMR specials will open  at 08.00 hrs o­n 13.12.2019

Works are to be taken up at Mettupalayam railway station to increase the platform length to hold 24 coaches and to modify the Foot Over Bridge to facilitate electrification.Due to these works, changes have been made in Nilagiri Express train services as detailed belo.

Lovers of NMR want railways to restart Special Summer Services

Udagamandalam (UAM): With the onset of the summer, many tourists are seeking to flock to the Nilgiris to beat the heat. Lovers of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) are seeking for special summer train services to cater to the large number of tourists. Earlier, till 2012, the southern railway operated special trains between Mettupalayam and Ooty on the NMR during summer months.

However, subsequently, the railways withdrew the services from 2013. With three coaches, the mountain train can carry at least 300 passengers in a single trip.

According to K Natarajan, managing trustee, Heritage Steam Chariot Trust (HSCT), the southern railway operated summer special trains on the NMR track till 2012. “The special services were withdrawn by the railways since 2013 for unknown reasons”, he said, adding, “Earlier, a decade ago, besides summer special services, night train services were also provided for short distances on the mountain track as part of summer festival in the hills. Despite, the NMR being one of the main attractions for tourists visiting the hills, the railways doesn’t seem to take any initiative to develop on tourism”.

On an average, around 7,000 tourists visit the hills daily, but only less than 900 tourists get a chance to experience the chug on the scenic railway line. Normally, apart from services between Mettupalayam and Ooty daily, two services between Ooty and Coonoor are also provided by the railways.

“The NMR has enough engines, especially with the new addition of indigenous oil-fired engines. The railways can easily provide special summer services in the interest of tourism,” said Natarajan.

However, Shubhran Shu, divisional railway manager (Salem division) said, “The NMR section witnessed several landslips and boulder-falls over the past few years. Considering the risk factor involved in the ghat section of NMR, we don’t intend to provide extra services on the track”.

In the meantime, HSCT has given a representation to the Salem division of the southern railways seeking re-introduction of special service in the NMR section for the summer. However, HSCT is yet to get a reply from the railways.
