Thalassery-Mysuru Rail route will help north Malabar: says Kannur MP

KANNUR: Kannur MP P.K. Sreemathy has said that the proposed Thalassery-Mysuru railway line, the survey for which Rs.45 lakh has been earmarked in the Railway Budget this year, will be a boon for those travelling in the route and for tourism.

In a press release, Ms.Sreemathy said the allocation of fund in the Union Budget 2017-18 for the survey of the proposed route followed repeated demands to the Central government that steps be taken for the construction of the railway track in the Thalassery-Mysuru route.

The proposed route would be the shortest route linking north Malabar with Mysuru, she said.

Cargo movement

The MP added that it would also accelerate cargo movement and tourism development in the region.

As the proposed route passes through areas close to the Kannur International Airport under construction, the rail line would also be beneficial to air passengers from the new airport, she added.

Auto traffic can enable Indian Railways earn revenue of Rs 2,500 cr per annum

Railways have remained an underused mode of transportation for finished automobiles. Less than 5 percent of outbound automobile logistics is through railways.

NEW DELHI: Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) highlighted the significance of railways in automobile industry, in its second day of Automotive Logistics Conclave held here on Wednesday.

Railways have remained an underused mode of transportation for finished automobiles. Less than 5 percent of outbound automobile logistics is through railways. Underdeveloped infrastructure at terminals for storage and handling, along with non-competitive pricing are key areas of concern in railway cargo transport.

The production and consumption patterns of automobile sector are growing in such a way that there is substantial demand for transporting the automobiles from one area to another.

Studies have indicated that 20 percent of auto traffic can be carried by rail. This will enable the railways sector to earn revenue of Rs 2500 crore per annum through rail freight against the existing Rs 100 crore per year.

Speaking on the occasion, UC Joshi, Executive Director (Freight Marketing), Railway Board, Ministry of Railways, said, "The Automobile Freight Transport Operator (AFTO) policy facilitates the investment on procurement of auto wagons and usage of Indian railways network for meeting the transport needs of the industry. This will be a well balanced situation for Indian Railways as well as the automobile industry/ logistics provider. In terms of logistics and other requirements, Indian Railways plans to introduce smaller capacity rakes to cater to lower volumes for smaller regions. We plan to put across a system which will enable us to monitor transit time and real time tracking of the consignment."

Over the last decade Indian Railways has initiated measures to improve the operational and commercial performance of its rail freight operations. These have included - increasing the permissible axle loading for major commodities; improving wagon utilization by raising train speeds together with incentives to customers to consign full rakes of wagons, cutting out the need for marshalling enroute; rationalizing train examination procedures to reduce service delays etc.

Commenting on the topic, H D Gujarati, Director, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL), said, "DFC will be a game changer in the transport and logistics sector. We are focussing on having a significant increase in the average speed of freight trains, volumetric capacity per wagon and double stack containers on the western corridor. We are in a process to introduce modern technology with will allow better maintenance, train operations with low operating cost. Dedicated freight Corridor will be operational by 2020."

The last session of the conclave was concluded with the way forward where panellists discussed the various measure taken up for operational efficiency gains through technology and manpower upgradation. Infrastructure creation and capacity building will be crucial in the development of the sector and further development of the economy.

RAILWAY PLANS TO INCREASE FREQUENCY AT ORGINATING/DESTINATION ENDS ON INCREMENTAL OFFERING OF CARGO AT EITHER ENDS
Marking a paradigm shift in freight operations, Indian Railways commenced the first time-tabled freight train named Cargo Express. This inaugural train commenced from Okhla(Delhi) on 15th June at 03.40 p.m. on its schedule and reached ICD Whitefield (Bengaluru) at 0020 Hrs today i.e. 18th June, 2016, notching a record success in reaching destination 13 hours ahead of schedule. The Cargo Express train was to reach destination ICD Whitefield (Bengaluru) as per a scheduled time frame of 70 hours. But defying time-frames, the Cargo Express reached the destination this morning (0020 Hrs of 18.06.2016) in a noteworthy record of 56 hrs 40 mins knocking out its scheduled time frame of 70 hours. The inaugural train had moved with 80 TEUs (twenty feet equivalent units) carrying domestic consignments of ceramic tiles, marble powder, poultry feed, malt, rice, wheat, calcium carbonate, soap stone powder, gram dal, paper and steel tubes. 
Defining a new age of possibilities through assured transit times of freight trains enabling certainty in keeping up with delivery schedules, two pairs of time tabled container were planned as a pilot initiative for catering to domestic piece-meal traffic segment between Delhi- Bangalore and Delhi- Chennai, both of these two cities are a distance of around 2200 km from Delhi. The scheduled time table train for Tondiarpet (Chennai) also departed from Okhla at 00.30 hrs. today (18th June).
Following the budget announcement, discussions had been held with Container Train Operators for submitting proposals for introduction of time tabled container trains with the objective of attracting incremental volumes of container traffic to rail mode. Accordingly, two pairs of time tabled container trains had been proposed by CONCOR to start with, for running in the domestic sector between Delhi and Bangalore and Delhi and Chennai. Following the success of the above introduced freight trains, Indian Railways envisages to plan more regular trains through premium paths for all container operators through suitable policy changes. 
The running of time-tabled freight trains is envisaged to afford a reliable value proposition to traders, notably in the the domestic piecemeal traffic sector viz. steel tubes, food-grains, ceramic tiles, polished granite slabs, rubber latex, plywood boards, alloys, electronic goods, chemicals, cars and automobile spares. CONCOR(the logistics enterprise of Govt. of India) estimates the volume of containerized traffic in these sectors to improve by25-30% with the introduction of assured transit time.

Mumbai: Lightweight, comfortable, loaded with modern amenities, and compatible with high-speed rail travel, all-new Talgo coaches have arrived in India at Mumbai. Manufactured by Spanish locomotive maker Talgo, these will be put through trial runs across two routes in India.

These coaches will be transported to Izzatnagar Depot after getting customs clearances,” a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The Spanish train-maker has offered to test run its lighter and faster trains free of cost on the existing Indian Railways network.  “The first Talgo train trial will be conducted between Bareilly and Moradabad rail route at a maximum speed of 115 kmph for oscillation test. This will be followed by another trial between Palwal and Mathura route at a maximum speed of 180 kmph,” the official said. The third one will be carried out between Mumbai-Delhi corridor, the same route which is used by Rajdhani Express and another non-Rajdhani Express. While the Delhi-Mumbai route is confirmed, the other route has yet to be decided.

The Spanish coach manufacturer, Talgo has agreed to conduct these trials free of cost and it will depend on results whether the Railway Ministry will plan on introducing these trains in the country. In the meantime, a permission letter has been issued to Talgo to import these coaches to India. They will come in as completely knocked down kits and will be assembled locally, following which trials will be conducted.

On the current infrastructure present in India, the Talgo high-speed coaches will have the capacity to travel at speeds of 160-200 kmph. They are compatible to upgrades, which will see even faster speeds.

At such high speeds, the travel distance between Delhi and Mumbai will be reduced from a current 17 hours to 12 hours. Besides bringing down travel time, Talgo coaches, being lightweight, also requires up to 30% less energy which will ensure massive savings on power bills for Indian Railways. These Talgo high-speed trains are currently in operation in many places in both Asia and the US.

Known for its high speed and light trains, Spanish train maker Talgo’s nine state-of-the-art train coaches have already reached Mumbai and will undergo crucial test run by the Railways next month.

Dispatched in a cargo ship from Barcelona on March 27, they will be put on trial on the existing tracks for validation test.

Depending upon the results of the trial, the railways will consider introduction of high speed trains.  Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has said that the aim of the trial run with Talgo coaches is to reduce by 5 hours the time taken on the Delhi-Mumbai route. Talgo has brought its trains on an experimental basis for the project. If the Talgo train runs at speeds varying between 160 and 200 kmph on the existing infrastructure without any upgrade, the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai is expected to be cut down to about 12 hours from the current 17 hours. Besides reducing travel time, Talgo’s lighter trains consume 30% less energy which will help railways reduce their power bill. Talgo claims that the coaches can run on higher speeds even on curves.

Three more Rail Freight Corridors on agenda

New Delhi: After the eastern and western dedicated freight corridors, the government has decided to have three more such high-speed cargo transportation networks to increase its dwindling share of the freight pie.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said the railways would build an east-west corridor connecting Kharagpur to Mumbai; a north-south one from Delhi to Chennai and an east coast between Kharagpur and Vijayawada.

The budget proposed to put these three projects “on high priority to ensure structuring, award and implementation in a time-bound manner through innovative financing mechanisms, including PPP”.

The share of freight traffic for the railways has plummeted to 36.5 per cent from 62 per cent in 1980.

It is also losing out on the movement of specialised cargo such as imported coal and automobiles.

The dedicated freight corridors, with spurs linking them to ports and mines, are expected to ramp up the railways’ freight capacity.

At present, Indian Railways is spending around Rs 81,459 crore on two projects – an eastern corridor with a route length of about 1,856 km from Ludhiana to Dankuni, on the outskirts of Calcutta; and a western corridor comprising 1,504 km of a double-line track from Mumbai’s Jawahar Lal Nehru Port to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

These two projects are expected to be completed by 2019.

Auto makers praise

Auto makers today hailed railway minister Suresh Prabhu’s proposal to set up the country’s first rail-auto hub in Chennai as it would enable cost-effective transportation of cars to the port.

Prabhu today said, “To capture the automobile traffic we will soon inaugurate India’s first rail auto hub in Chennai.”

Guillaume Sicard, operations president of Nissan India, said the announcement to create a hub was a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to the Make in India initiative.

Nissan India is one of the largest exporters of passenger cars and has reached the landmark export figure of six lakh cars recently.

Car giants, including Maruti Suzuki, Ford Motor and Renault, are gearing up to make India a hub for their exports to the emerging markets of Latin America, South Asia, Africa, among others.

Bharat chamber welcomes high priority freight corridors

Reacting to 2016-17 Railway Budget proposals, Rakesh Shah, President of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Kolkata, said that the announcement of new high priority freight corridors between Kharagpur and Mumbai and Kharagpur and Vijaywada were welcome moves. The completion target for the East-West Metro project (for Kolkata) augurs well for West Bengal. “Haldia Port connectivity is another positive approach for West Bengal”, he said. He also commended the projected augmentation of earnings through freight and keeping the passengers fares unaltered.

Transporters said busy cargo movements in the wake of tight truck positions, mainly led to rise in freight rates for select destinations

Freight rates for the nine-tonne pay load section improved by Rs 1,000 in the local truck transport market today following pickup in cargo movements against tight availability of trucks.

Delhi to Ludhiana, Kanpur and Indore freight rates were up by Rs 1,000 each to Rs 18,000, Rs 21,000, Rs 23,000, respectively.

Rates to Ahmedabad, Baroda, Patna and Surat also rose by Rs 1,000 each to Rs 24,000, Rs 27,000, Rs 28,000 and Rs 27,000, respectively.

Kolkata and Mumbai rates too went up by Rs 1,000 each to Rs 32,000 and Rs 28,000, respectively.
