DMRC plans to convert 50% AFC Exit Gates for Smart Cards users only

DMRC plans to convert 50% AFC Exit Gates for Smart Cards users only

New Delhi: In order to facilitate the Smart Card carrying passengers who comprise about 70% of the daily Metro passengers, the Delhi Metro has decided to convert 50 percent of the existing ‘Automatic Fare Collection Gates (AFC) Exit Gates’ to ‘Card Only’ Exit Gates.

At present, Delhi Metro has 1073 AFC Exit Gates across all Metro stations of the network. Of these, 500 ‘Exit Gates’ are being converted exclusively for the Smart Card users to be known as ‘Card Only’ AFC Exit Gates. The move is aimed at facilitating a smooth exit from the dedicated gates at a faster pace. The remaining AFC Exit Gates will remain functional for both the Smart Card and Token carrying passengers.

These dedicated ‘Card Only’ exit gates will also help Token users as shifting of Card users to their dedicated exit gates would allow Token users more space/time to exit from remaining AFC(mixed-token+card) Exit Gates. Token handling at times by relatively new passengers leads to some minor error/delay in exit but this new arrangement would pave the way for a smooth exit for both types of commuters- Card as well as token users avoiding unnecessary delay/hassle in exit.   At present, 300 AFC Gates have already been converted into ‘Card Only’ AFC Exit Gates at Metro stations across all lines. Rest of the stations will be covered by the end of this month. Adequate signages are being placed at these gates to inform and facilitate the passengers.

Presently, the Delhi Metro has 213 km of operational network with 160 stations which carries around 26 lakh commuters everyday across Delhi and NCR. Of these, around 18 lakh commuters use Metro Smart card every day.

Seven new AFC Gates installed at DMRC’s Rajiv Chowk station

Seven new AFC Gates installed at DMRC’s Rajiv Chowk station

Seven new fare collection gates have been installed at Delhi Metro’s Rajiv Chowk station to facilitate smooth exit of passengers deboarding from Yellow Line trains which run between Jahangirpuri and Gurgaon’s Huda City Centre

New Delhi: Seven new fare collection gates have been installed at Delhi Metro’s Rajiv Chowk station to facilitate smooth exit of passengers deboarding from Yellow Line trains which run between Jahangirpuri and Gurgaon’s Huda City Centre.

These additional gates – which had to be installed by cutting a portion of the station area – is aimed at reducing congestion in the area which takes one towards F-Block of Connaught Place, which registers maximum outflow, Metro said.

In this regard, Delhi Metro had previously opened the Viewers Gallery, the unpaid area of the busy intersection, to allow its passengers to move over the tracks of Blue Line without crossing the foot-over-bridge.

However, it has very few takers as of now.

“These additional gates will facilitate smooth and swift exit of passengers of Yellow Line (Line-2) from the station without getting into the way of Blue Line (ie, Line-3 Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre) passengers within the paid area and vice versa and will avoid unnecessary criss-crossing while interchange,” a Metro statement said.

Adequate signages have been installed to guide passengers towards these gates, it said. With these new installations, the number of Automatic Fare Collection gates at Rajiv Chowk has gone up to 46, the maximum for any station in the entire Metro network.

“It has been observed that generally 70 per cent of the passengers land up at the Dwarka-side platform and then cross the over-bridge to go towards the Noida/Vaishali platform. The move is aimed at facilitating smooth movement of passengers from one side of the station to another and to avoid unnecessary congestion inside the paid area,” said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in a press statement.

Delhi Metro set to install 210 new AFC gates

Delhi Metro set to install 210 new AFC gates

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro is in the process of installing 210 new Automatic Fare Collection gates (AFC) in key stations across its network to ensure smooth flow of commuters, as the addition of new sections are shooting up ridership figures substantially.

Although several other steps would be needed to manage the jump in ridership, the Delhi Metro authorities are hoping that installing the new gates would help in reducing passenger snarls during entry or exit from the stations.

Among the new gates, a maximum of 20 are being installed at Huda City Centre station of Yellow Line, a major terminal station located in the heart of Gurgaon, which sees a huge number of footfalls everyday. At the Govindpuri and Nehru Place stations of Violet Line, 10 new gates each are to be installed. The corridor, with an average ridership of 1.92 lakh, has seen a jump in the numbers after the recent launch of the ITO station.

While approximately 22,000 passengers are expected to use the station daily by 2016, nearly two lakh more passengers would use the line once the extension till Faridabad is thrown open. Keeping that in view, eight new gates are being installed at the Kalkaji Mandir station, while four each will be put up at Badarpur, Jasola and Moolchand stations.

On the Yellow line, eight gates would be put up at INA, Hauz Khas and M.G. Road stations, which are important halts in the corridor. By 2016, Delhi Metro’s Phase-III expansion would add 140 km to the existing network and nearly 15 lakh passengers to the daily ridership figure. The figure breached the 30-lakh mark on May 11.

Kochi Metro, Axis Bank ink pact for fare collection

Kochi Metro, Axis Bank ink pact for fare collection

Kochi: Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has signed a public-private partnership (PPP) pact with Axis Bank for the automated fare collection (AFC) system. The agreement was signed between KMRL managing director, Elias George, and Axis Bank managing director and CEO, Shikha Sharma, in the presence of urban development minister, Venkaiah Naidu, in Delhi.

Under the agreement, investment for the entire funding required for the AFC system will be undertaken by Axis Bank, which will also maintain it for 10 years.

The the bank will pay a royalty of Rs 209 crore over the next 10 years for the right to be KMRL’s partner in this endeavour. In return, Axis Bank will get the right to issue co-branded cards, which will function as a smart card as well as a ticket, to the users of the metro.

In addition to this, 0.2 per cent of Axis Bank’s gross revenue, from the utilisation of this card outside KMRL’s ecosystem in various mercantile outlets and internet transactions, will also accrue to KMRL over the next 10 years, a press statement said.

Axis Bank is partnering with Asis electronik Ve Bilisim Sistemleri, AS, a Turkish company, for the infrastructure and AGS Transact Technologies Limited for the integration and maintenance in the system.

The AFC system is a critical core component of any metro system. It includes complex hardware and software installed at entry points of metro stations as well as buses and boats. It uses radio frequency identification devices (RFID) to collect fares from the users. In such a system, the metro ticket can be in the form of a co-branded card or an NFC-enabled smart phone or a ‘patch’ on a mobile device or any other surface with NFC stickers or QR code, or even as a paper-coupon.

The smart card can be linked with any bank account of the user, in any bank, including Jan-Dhan Yojana, said, George.

Shikha Sharma said creating a payment infrastructure that supports cashless payments is an integral part of growth of smart cities in the country.

KMRL is planning a ‘click and collect’ system whereby the commuter will be able to order goods and services using this card, which can be delivered at all metro stations. It is also planning to start a drive for including a variety of local and national goods and services that can be accessed using the KMRL-Axis Bank co-branded card.

This is also for the first time that the AFC solution has been enabled on the Cloud-based hardware in line with KMRL’s IT philosophy of ‘open standards on the Cloud’. In addition to the co-branded card, the bank will also develop a mobile app, which can be used for ticketing as well as e-commerce.

This initiative is unique in that it is for the first time that ‘open-loop’ smart cards are being introduced in the metro system. The urban development ministry has mandated all metros to have an integrated smart card system, which can be used in all transit. KMRL had appointed Ernst & Young as consultants for drawing the specification of the smart card system.
