Kalka-Shimla train derailment caused by “failure of railway staff”: Inquiry Report

Shimla: A statutory inquiry into the September 12 derailment of the four-coach “toy train” from Kalka to Shima, in which two tourists from the United Kingdom, both women, had died has concluded that the accident was caused by “failure of railway staff”.

Apart from the two women who died, three passengers suffered injuries and two received simple injuries in the mishap.

Mr.S.K.Pathak, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, Northeast Frontier Circle, Kolkata who held a statutory inquiry into the derailment of the special train, which had been chartered for the group of tourists, has submitted his preliminary report, an official press release said.

“According to the provisional findings of the Commissioner appended with his preliminary report the accident took place due to ‘Failure of Railway Staff’,” it said.

These findings are under the consideration of the Government, it said.

The derailment had taken place between Kalka and Taksal stations on the Kalka-Shimla narrow guage section of Ambala Division of Northern Railway at 1251 hours on September 12.

In all, there were 37 passengers on the train, including 34 UK nationals, for whom a travel agency had chartered the toy train, so called because of its size.

The narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla railway line is a UNESCO heritage site and is a major tourist attraction. Shimla used to be the summer capital of the country during British Raj.

WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED DA W.E.F JULY 2015?

Additional Dearness Allowance from July 2015 is based on the fluctuation in market prices of essential commodities between the months of January and June 2015. The AICPIN Figures for April 2015 stood at 256 as against 254 in March 2015. If it continues to be at 256 for May & June 2015, the DA is expected to rise to 119% w.e.f., 01.07.2015.
