Jat quota agitation: Delhi Metro services to be hit from Sunday evening

The services at Metro stations will be resumed only after getting clearance from Delhi Police

In a major decision, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will suspend its train services to and from all stations outside Delhi from 11.30 pm on Sunday.

This development comes in the wake of the proposed Jat agitation on March 20.

As directed by Delhi Police authorities, Metro services will not be available at all Metro Stations outside Delhi (NCR stations) i.e. on Line -2 (Guru Dronacharya to Huda City Centre) on Line-3 and 4 (Kaushambi to Vaishali and Noida Sector-15 to Noida City Center) and on Line-6 (Sarai to Escotrs Mujesar) from March 19, 11.30 pm onwards till further instructions from the police authorities.

Moreover, following metro stations in Delhi region will also remain closed for public from 8:00 pm onwards on Match 19 till further directions - to Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Lok Kalyan Marg, Janpath, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, RK Ashram Marg, Pragati Maidan, Khan Market and Shivaji Stadium.

However, interchange facility will be available at all interchange stations.

The services at all these Metro stations will be resumed only after getting clearance from the Delhi Police.

Unhappy with the authorities over their demands and grievances being unaddressed, Jat protesters on Wednesday announced non-cooperation after Holi (March 13) and are taking their stir to Delhi from tomorrow.

They gave a call for the march to besiege Parliament and to hold dharnas on the Delhi border, blocking all highways, to press for their demands for reservation.

The Haryana Assembly on Wednesday discussed the ongoing Jat agitation.

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Singh Chautala, who moved an adjournment motion during the Budget session, said the Congress and the BJP were trying to play politics on reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to the Jats of Haryana.

Chautala said the state's BJP government had failed to implement the community's demands even after agreeing to them last year.

Apart from reservation, the Jats are demanding jobs to the next of kin of those killed in violence in the agitation last year, compensation to those injured, withdrawal of cases against them and action against officers who ordered action against the Jats.

Violence during the Jat agitation, in February 2016, claimed the lives of 30 people and injured around 200 people. Government and private property worth hundreds of crores of rupees was damaged.

Bangalore: For those who have been complaining about the Metro constructions having marred the aesthetic appeal of Bengaluru, this certainly comes as a relief.

A design that blends perfectly into the backdrop of a line of heritage buildings is that of the Vidhana Soudha Metro station. Even though it is still under construction, the structure calls one to take a second look at it. Built of stones, the entry structures are designed to look like the replica of Vidhana Soudha’s reception. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is also contemplating restoring the old statues once the civil work is complete.

The four-entry structures for the Vidhana Soudha Metro station are being constructed by the BMRCL on Ambedkar Veedhi, with Vidhana Soudha on one side and the High Court of Karnataka on the other. U A Vasanth Rao, General Manager (Finance), BMRCL, said that special attention had been paid to the design of the station as it stood adjacent to the seat of power.

“Vidhana Soudha is a brand in itself. So even at the station, we are trying to replicate the old designs that were used during the construction of Vidhana Soudha.

This will enhance the look and feel of the building,” he told. The cost of constructing these structures is about 25 per cent more than that of the other metro stations. Seventy-five per cent of civil works are complete and commercial operations on the Mysuru Road-Baiyappanahalli stretch are likely to begin by November, Rao added.

According to an official working at the spot, the building is being constructed with Sadarahalli stones (a common form of granite seen in Bengaluru’s buildings) and is an RPC frame structure. The rooftop and the chiselled borders which have intricate designs on them are being carved manually.

“Special sculptors have been hired for the work. The design that was adopted in the Vidhana Soudha’s reception area has replicated,” said the official.

The structure is being manufactured in parts at a place near Lumbini Gardens in Hebbal and is being put together at the site of the station.

Speaking about the architectural designs of Vidhana Soudha, Sathya Prakash Varanashi, Convenor, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach), said the structure was a representation of the new vision of people in the post-independence era.

“The grandeur is similar to that of the corridors of European palaces and domes of cathedrals. In all, it is a hybrid structure. It was constructed to make a statement that ‘we are here to protect you’,” he added.

More than Twenty Minutes stay in Metro Station liable to penalised -CMRL

Chennai (MAS): If you stay more than 20 minutes at the platform of metro stations without boarding a train, you are liable to be penalised.

Chennai Metro Rail officials said the smart card won’t work when trying to enter into the station and the ticket checking official could easily find out that you have overstayed. And this could result in the commuter having to pay the penalty even if he hasn’t used the service.

However, Chennai Metro has not yet notified this and an official promised that announcements would be put out in the stations to make commuters aware of the consequences of either loitering or waiting too long on the platform.

Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail officials are planning to set up kiosks at the station entrance,  providing food, sweets, bakery items and confectioneries, stationary gifts, mobiles and accessories and bookstores. A Metro official said tenders have been floated in this regard.

“We will also be setting up ATMs,” said the official. Currently, some of the stations have two ATMs and this could function with the availability of network.

It is learnt that Koyambedu, Alandhur, Arumbakkam and Vadapalani stations would have food court and beverage kiosks. A total of 99 square metres have been marked in these four stations for this purpose, sources said.

Similarly, sweets, bakery items and confectioneries, stationary gifts, mobiles and accessories and bookstores kiosks would be set up in all the seven stations.

For the public, the biggest hurdle is lack of multi-modal integration. The proposed mini-buses are nowhere to be seen. And people from far-off places like chinmaya Nagar, Valsaravakkam, Anna Nagar or residential areas in Vadapalani find it difficult to access Chennai Metro.

CPM, VCK demand reduction in fare

Chennai: Joining the Metro Rail rid, CPM and VCK reiterated the demand for slashing the ticket prices, while Tamil Maanila Congress leader GK Vasan sought integration of the project with MRTS. Accompanied by party functionaries, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan started his journey from Alandur. Waiting in the queue, he himself bought the tickets and sat with other passengers during the travel. He told reporters that people felt that that the Rs.40 fare fixed for Alandur to Koyambedu was very high.
