Four New DEMU Trains to be Launched in JK
SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Four new DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit Trains) will be launched on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir.
Railways Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha will launch the trains from Rail Bhawan in the national capital.
The Ministers will inaugurate the new train services at around 2 p.m. via video conferencing. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti will simultaneously launch the new trains by showing them green flag at the Harnag Anantnag railway station in south Kashmir.
The new DEMU trains with modern facilities will go a long way in helping the people of Kashmir to travel between Banihal to Baramulla and Baramulla to Budgam.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) national project has been demarcated into phased programme.
The rail line in the Kashmir Valley was constructed in a phased programme with the Railway gradually commissioning rail sections in different stages.
The first rail connection between Anantnag and Mazahama in central Kashmir’s Budgam district was commissioned in October 2008.
The Railway commissioned the 11.3 km long Pir Panjal Tunnel and opened the Banihal-Qazigund railway section to public in June (26) 2013 to knit the Kashmir Valley region to the Jammu region.

GRP personnel told to remain extra alert
Srinagar: The Government Railway Police (GRP) officers in Jammu region were told to remain extra alert in areas close to the International Border by a senior police officer.
A statement issued by GRP said Inspector General of Police Railway J&K M Sulaiman Salaria reviewed security related meetings in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu today and asked the officials to remain extra alert.
“The participants (officers) were instructed to remain extra alert in their area of responsibility and to keep an eagle eye at railway tracks, railway stations and in running trains located parallel and in close proximity to the International Border” the statement read.
“In view of previous infiltrations on the International Border, acts of sabotage and cross border terrorism at railway tracks, railway stations and running trains cannot be ruled out,” the statement said.
The statement further said that Salaria instructed the officials to deal politely with public especially with the Amarnath pilgrims and provide them necessary assistance and be firm with regard to their duties.

Railway Minister to Flag-off 4 new Services in Kashmir, Banihal
Srinagar: The Indian Railways will start four new services in the Kashmir valley and Banihal in Jammu region tomorrow. An official spokesperson said here today that Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu will arrive here tomorrow to flag off four new services.
