World Toilet Day -Swachh Bharat Mission Mega Initiatives across States and Districts

Swachh Bharat Mission to celebrate World Toilet Day tomorrow with nationwide activities 
The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) will celebrate the World Toilet Day tomorrow with mass  awareness and mobilization activities across States and districts.  The focus is on usage  of toilets, which is closely linked to the Prime Minister’s call for a Swachh Bharat by October 2019.
The central part of the day’s celebrations  is the the Swachh Bharat World Toilet Day Contest 2018 among all districts by organizing grassroots activities involving district, block and panchayat level teams, swachhagrahis and swachhata champions. The objective is to engage with communities and reaffirm the national resolve to a sustain the Sanitation achievement. States and districts are working on a competitive mode since 9th November with a range of innovative activities centred around Toilets and Swachhata creating unprecedented momentum in the country which is expected to culminate with mega initiatives tomorrow.
Since the inception of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the rural sanitation coverage of India has increased significantly, from 39% in October 2014 to over 96% today. Over 8.8 crore household toilets have been built by rural Indians. As a result, 25 States/Union Territories, 530 districts, and over 5.2 lakh villages have declared themselves free from open      defecation.   The number of people practicing open defecation in rural India has gone down from 550 million in 2014, to less than 100 million today through the progress made under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
In recognition to the work done by the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, is  receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Toilet Summit in Mumbai .

Chennai Central Railway Station Awarded with IGBC Green Building Cerification

CHENNAI CENTRAL RAILWAY STATION AWARDED WITH IGBC GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION

Chennai Central became the first Station in Southern Railway to get the prestigious Green Building Certification. The Confederation of Indian Industry – instituted - IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) Green Building Certifcation was awarded to Chennai Central at a Railway SWACHCHTA Programme at Chennai Central Railway Station Today.
The green building rating to Chennai Central Railway Station was given for incorporating some of the finest green building concepts & features in the station. The award was given under IGBC Green Railway Stations Rating System. Shri C N Raghavendran, Chairman, IGBC Chennai Chapter presented IGBC plaque & certificate to Shri R.K. Kulshrestha, General Manager, Southern Railway in the presence of Mr Naveen Gulati, Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, Southern Railway, Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway, invitees and volunteers during a Railway Swachhta programme organised at the Station.
Green Railway Stations rating is a tool to facilitate adoption of green concepts, thereby reducing the adverse environmental impacts due to station’s operation & maintenance. The overarching principle of the rating is to enhance commuter’s experience. The rating system facilitates- energy efficiency improvements; use of renewable energy sources; water management and rain water harvesting; health, hygiene and sanitation; green cover and providing universal access.
Some of the green features implemented at Chennai Central Railway Station evaluated by the Indian Green Building Council include the following:
Well-developed passenger amenities - Pick up and Drop points, Seating, waiting hall, Pay & Use Toilets, Prepaid Ac waiting hall, AC dormitory, Emergency medical care (Stretchers, 24x7 Doctor, Nurse, e-shuttle vehicle inside station building, Mobile charging points on every platform, Elevators, Trolley Based Luggage Assistants, Drinking Water points.
· 100% LED lighting fixtures
· 100% BEE 5-star rated fans
· Solar Panels on Exposed Station Roof area above New Concourse to generate
Solar Energy
· Solar water heaters to meet 90% of the hot water requirements
· Segregation of waste at source and facilitate recycling (or) environment friendly
disposal
· 60% water efficient plumbing fixtures
· Water Recycling Plant (Capacity-10 lakh litres/day)
· Rainwater harvesting for recharging the local aquifer
· smart passenger’s information systems & services at the station for convenient
and comfortale commuting experience
Expressing delight over this major achievement, Shri C N Raghavendran congratulated team Chennai Central Railway Station and underlined that the award of IGBC rating to Chennai Central Railway Station will encourage other railway stations in the Country go the green way, he added. He said that, IGBC aspires to facilitate 10 billion sq.ft of green building footprint by 2022 and team Indian Railways will play a major role in achieving this vision and in the process facilitate in building a greener & healthier India, he highlighted.
At present, IGBC is working with 40 other stations in Indian Railways for their certification.

MADURAI: Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple has been adjudged the cleanest temple in the country under Swachhta Hi Seva programme, the best among ten iconic places in the country selected under the Swachh Bharath Mission.
Dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareswar, a form of Shiva, the temple was adjudged the Best Swachh Iconic Place from a formidable list of contenders which included the Taj Mahal, Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the Golden Temple, Tirupathi temple and Sri Vaishno Devi temple. Madurai district collector K Veera Raghava Rao and corporation commissioner Aneesh Sekhar will collect the award at a function being organized by the ministry of drinking water and sanitation, the convening ministry for Swachh Bharath Mission, in New Delhi on Monday. The function will be held to mark Gandhi Jayanthi and the culmination of the Swachhta Hi Seva.
In the last couple of years, there has been a concerted effort to keep the temple clean and plastic-free. In all, 60 employees on contract work round-the-clock to keep the premises clean while about 300 volunteers also pitch in with their efforts every month. Corporates like TVS and Thiagarajar Mills in Madurai send their staff for regular cleanup activities in the temple. Joint commissioner of the temple, N Natarajan, said that they ensured that the workers were given the best equipment like mopping machine, water air gun and hydraulic ladder which made cleaning the edifice easy.
Though there was an order to slap a spot fine of Rs 50 on anybody who littered the temple, "we have never had the need to do so because the clean environment of the temple itself deters people from littering it," he said. After the temple made it to the first list of 10 out of the 100 iconic places selected in the country, the Madurai corporation swung into action while the district administration also paid special attention to it. Plastic was banned in the one kilometre radius of the temple from January 1 and regular inspections conducted.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities were streamlined with sanitation and cleanliness of the temple and its surroundings taken up under Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd's (BPCL) Rs 11.65 crore funds. Aimed at making the temple attractive to tourists and also clean, self-flushing e-toilets were installed around the temple. As dust from manual sweeping can be a menace, the streets around the temple are cleaned with only mechanical hand sweeping machines.
Dumper bins from which waste is removed by big vehicles can spoil the outer appearance of the premises. Hence, they were replaced by the more attractive compactor bins which can be lifted by smaller vehicles. Besides these, twin bins paved the way for on-site segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Acquisition of water ATMs operating through reverse osmosis is in the tender stage now while battery vehicles are also to be reintroduced to transport tourists and visitors to the temple.
Corporation assistant health officer Dr K Parthiban said that waste was being collected only after segregation at source in the house, hotels and business establishments around the temple. They were also exploring the possibilities of installing the temple's own sewage treatment plant (STP) so that water from the temple could be recycled and used for watering the parks and gardens around it.

For the First Time Equipped the Guard Vans will be equipped with Solar Powered Light, Fan, Mobile Charging Points 

Guard Vans also to have Zero Discharge Bio Toilets in place of Conventional Toilets in Line with the Swachh Bharat Initiatives of Indian Railways 

New Facilities in the Guard Van are Environment Friendly 

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inspected and flagged off the newly manufactured Guard Van of Goods (Freight) Train today, i.e. 05th October 2016 at Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station. The newly manufactured Guard Van of Goods Train (8 wheeled) has been equipped for the first time with Solar powered Light, Fan, Mobile Charging Point along with the facility of Zero discharge Bio Toilet. On this occasion, Member Rolling Stock, Railway Board Shri Hemant Kumar, Member Traffic, Railway Board Shri Mohammed Jamshed, Financial Commissioner Railways, Shri KV Nanda, were also present.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Suresh Prabhu has said that these facilities will improve the working conditions and functioning of the guards. He also said that powering Fans & Lights through Solar Panels will help in reducing the carbon footprint of Railways. He also said that Indian Railways will pursue to initiate more such initiatives. He further said that, Indian Railways has always kept in mind providing good working conditions to its workers and customers. He said that use of Solar energy is also an environment friendly measure and will help in energy saving. Shri Suresh Prabhu said that Indian Railways is also working to run fully solar powered trains.

Guards of freight trains have been working under difficult condition of absence of basic facilities of light & fan that too during heat of summers and darkness of night work.  Indian Railways has now attempted to address this shortcoming by providing light and fan arrangement in brake-vans which so far have been a distant dream of the Guards.

    The Guard vans (also called 8 wheeled Brake Vans Z- frame Improved BVZI) modified by IROAF with the assistance of Amritsar Workshop of Northern Railway are provided with a fan, a light and mobile charging facility which are supported by Solar Power generation at the rooftop.  Thus the power now being available for Guard comfort is environment friendly, as it does not generate any emission / pollution.  The Solar generation is supported with a battery bank to power the brake van facilities for more than 24 hours continuously even on a rainy day.  Thus it is expected to provide uninterrupted comfort of basic facilities to the Guard.

The system provided has the GPRS support which enables monitoring of the functioning of this system so that necessary maintenance inputs can be made available as and when needed to achieve uninterrupted service.

    In keeping with the country’s commitment to make India a ‘Swachh Bharat’, the Guard’s toilet has also been modified to a zero discharge bio toilet.  This design of bio-toilet results in no discharge of night soil on the track thus providing a hygienic surroundings in an around the Railway premises.

Railways to make two routes 'zero toilet discharge' by October 2

New Delhi: Indian Railways is all set to make its tracks on two routes free from discharge of waste from toilets by installing environment-friendly zero discharge toilet system in the coaches of the trains running on these sections by October 2.

Gearing up to achieve a unique milestone in the 'Swachh Bharat' mission, railways have identified Kanalus-Dwarka-Okha and Porbunder-Wansjalya routes in Gujarat to make it "zero toilet discharge" sections.

"Kanalus-Dwarka-Okha and Porbunder-Wansjalya section have been identified to be made 'zero toilet discharge' sections by October 2 this year," Railway Board Member (Mechanical) Hemant Kumar said in New Delhi on Monday.

The zero toilet discharge section envisages all trains passing on that particular route would have bio-toilets which eliminate open discharge of waste on the rail tracks from the existing toilets.

Railways had launched a massive cleaning operation on October 2, 2014 when the then Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had led from the front by picking up the broom to clean New Delhi station.

Kumar said Jammu-Katra and Manmadurai-Rameswaram sections would be made a fully green one later in 2015.

Bio-toilets have been introduced in the rail coaches to eliminate open discharge of waste on the track. In the bio- toilets, the waste is digested by specially developed bacteria and only small amount of clean water is discharged.

Kumar said the railways have installed more than 17,000 bio-toilets in trains till March 2015, and has set a target to fit 17,000 more such toilets in this fiscal. It costs about Rs 3 lakh to install four "Zero Discharge Toilet System" in a coach.

Railways is also planning to change the existing ladder in sleeper and AC coaches in order to make them more user-friendly. Ladders have been already changed in the AC-1 coaches and new design for other class coaches are being finalised to be replaced with the existing ones, Kumar said.

Railways have joined hands with NID to design a more user- friendly ladders for sleeper and AC class coaches.

Asked about the progress in manufacturing of state-of-the -art 'Anubhuti' rail coach, Kumar said the contract to manufacture the coach had to be awarded again as the contractor awarded the work could not deliver it and also there were pricing issues involved in it.

He, however, said Anubhuti project was not in the cold storage and would be manufactured. The then Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had announced the introduction of Anubhuti coaches with state-of-the-art facility to passengers of select Rajdhanis and Shatabdis with much fanfare in his Rail Budget 2013.
