Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication (IRISET), the premier training institute o­n Indian Railways celebrated its 59th Annual Day today i.e. 27th November 2016 at its premises at Tarnaka, Secunderabad. Shri Akhil Agrawal, Director General (Signal & Telecom), Railway Board, New Delhi was the Chief Guest. Shri Ravindra Gupta, General Manager, South Central Railway presided over the function. Shri N. Kashinath, Additional Member, (Signal), Railway Board, Shri M.S.Mahaboob Ali, Director, IRISET & Chief Signal & Telecommunication Engineer, South Central Railway and other officials participated.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Akhil Agrawal stated that IRISET is a Pioneering Institute o­n Indian Railways which imparts training to Signal & Telecommunication Officers and Supervisors with excellent teaching modules. He appreciated the role of Signal & Telecom department in running the high volumes of traffic with safety and punctuality. He advised them to imbibe new technologies and systems to further the growing demands of Traffic o­n Indian Railways.
Shri Ravindra Gupta, General Manager while addressing the gathering opined that IRISET is o­ne of the best Institutes with very good facilities. He said that with the emerging scenario in traffic patterns the emphasis o­n safety has reached optimum and role of Signal & Telecom department has become crucial.  IRISET plays a vital role in designing, imparting training, operating and trouble shooting in the maintenance of S&T assets. IRISET has been always alive in changing needs of its technical cadre. IRISET has been upgrading the teaching content and introducing new courses as per the requirement of the systems o­n Indian Railways.
Shri M.S.Mahaboob Ali, Director, IRISET in his annual report said that IRISET organized 121 courses were conducted and trained 2923 persons during the current calendar year up to October, 2016. 19 Refresher training courses have been conducted in which 912 trainees have attended. Seven special courses o­n safety have been conducted in which 106 trainees participated. Further, IRISET also took initiative by developing E-learning modules for interactive learning o­n “Anywhere Anytime” basis, which is uploaded o­n IRISET Website. The Institute has extended its class room virtually to all Zonal Training Centres which are spread over length and breadth of the country through video conferencing and E-learning.
Shri N.Kashinath, Additional Member, (Signal), Railway Board also spoke o­n the occasion. Later, merit awards were given away to the trainees by the dignitaries present and the in-house newsletter ‘Gyandeep’ Technical Magazine was released. This was followed by cultural programmes performed by the trainees.
Earlier, Shri Akhil Agrawal, Director General (S&T) inaugurated a Gymnasium and Solid State Block proving Axle Counter (Digital)-Block Signalling Lab at IRISET premises.

Railways developing backup for Signalling System to avoid another Itarsi

Indian Railways is developing a backup for signalling system to prevent disruption train services as happened at Itarsi railway station in Madhya Pradesh a few month ago.

A fire at the signal cabin of the Itarsi railway station on June 17 disrupted train services for a month, and around 1,000 trains were affected.

Speaking at a seminar on “Capacity and Safety Enhancement with Modern Signalling” SR general manager Vashishta Johri said on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Institute of Railway Signal and Telecommunication Engineers (IRSTE) here on Friday that such incidents will have huge impact on smooth operations of Railways.

Director General of Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) P K Srivastava said: “We are working on a system that will offer a backup for the entire train movement operation at a railway station. The system will be designed in such a way that it may be easy to transfer data to a laptop or a similar equipment and allow trains to pass through.”

Srivastava said, “The aim is to ensure that at least 90% of the trains are operated when a signal cabin is disabled. The backup will be ready in a month and will be implemented at all stations.”

TVM Signalling and Transportation Systems Pvt Ltd managing director Gopalakrishnan P said, “There are backups system for each functions like signals, electrical interlocking, panels, power supply and others at stations. But there is no backup for the entire train operations at a railway station. We are trying to develop and install one such system.”

Srivastava said that there was immense pressure on railways to enhance line capacity using the existing infrastructure. “It is not easy to add a third line. So we have to improve and modernise signal systems to ensure that more trains can be operated in a safe manner within the existing infrastructure.”

He also said the automatic safety systems like train protection and warning system were important for railways. “We are striving to add capacity to the existing line by modernising the signals. So we need better and modern safety system. We are developing Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) which has features of train protection and warning system also to ensure that technology would have a supervisory role on the loco pilots who drive trains,” he added.

Southern Railway general manager Vashishta Johri said the zone had a modernised signalling system. “The zone has ensured that there was a substantial reduction in failures. The staff need to be guided and coached to improve maintenance,” he added.

Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication (IRISET), the premier training institute o­n Indian Railways celebrated its 57th Annual Day today i.e. 24th November 2014 at its premises at Secunderabad. Shri A.K. Mital, Member Electrical & Staff/Railway Board, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and delivered the key note address. Shri P.K. Srivastava, General Manager / South Central Railway presided over the function. Shri Mahesh Mangal, Addl. Member (Telecom) and Shri S. Manohar, Advisor (Signal), Railway Board, New Delhi were the Guests of Honour o­n the occasion.

Addressing the big gathering of officers, staff, trainees, faculty etc, Shri A.K. Mital, Member Electrical & Staff/Railway Board said that IRISET holds a unique status all over the world, as o­ne of the best training institutions in the ever evolving field of signal engineering and telecommunications o­n railways. The institute can rightly be termed as the o­nly o­ne which has evolved over time, keeping abreast with technology continuously. With the increasing demands o­n infrastructure of Indian Railways, both in terms of freight and passenger traffic being carried, there is a need to ensure safe operations and increased throughput, he said. IRISET is surely capable of meeting these needs with the best in terms of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications training, he averred. Shri Mital also laid stress o­n the fact that Signal Engineering and Telecommunications will be the focus area of rail transport needs in the future.

Shri P.K. Srivastava, GM/SCR, in his address highlighted the fact that the process of train operations banks o­n signalling. “Safety is the synonym of signal engineering and telecommunications o­n railways” and IRISET ably serves this purpose, he opined. The General Manager also praised the faculty for furthering the future requirements of IRISET purposefully.
